Summary

Maya Angelou's poetic celebration of the courage within each person is matched by the daring vision of artist Basquiat, whose childlike style reveals the fanciful imaginings of childhood。 In this introduction to poetry and contemporary art, brief biographies of Angelou and Basquiat accompany the text and artwork。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Wow!!! Two of the most famous artists in their respective fields in one work。 I have the 25th Anniversary Edition I'm not sure if they added anything to the original release of this book。 I enjoyed the poem but what I enjoyed the most about the book was the brief biographies included at the end of Maya Angelou and Jean-Michel Basquiat。 I absolutely loved the Afterword and the illustration credits about the artwork featured in this book by Jean-Michel Basquiat。 What I loved about it was the title Wow!!! Individuals in this book are introduced to a range of things they might be afraid of, but how they aren't actually that scary。 Reading simple sentences to individuals allows them to absorb what is being read。 This book uses a mixture of rhyme and non-rhyming sentences to teach individuals that poems don't have to rhyme。 The repetition of the sentence, 'life doesn't frighten me at all, makes me understand that the small things we see that may be scary do not have to overwhelm us。 We can overcome Individuals in this book are introduced to a range of things they might be afraid of, but how they aren't actually that scary。 Reading simple sentences to individuals allows them to absorb what is being read。 This book uses a mixture of rhyme and non-rhyming sentences to teach individuals that poems don't have to rhyme。 The repetition of the sentence, 'life doesn't frighten me at all, makes me understand that the small things we see that may be scary do not have to overwhelm us。 We can overcome it。 There is a lot of use of language and sounds。 For example, 'Boo, make them 'shoo'',This book would be suitable for all year groups since it displays illustrations and text that can introduce children to new vocabulary that can enhance their language。 Even though children can see the similarities and differences among people and the things they are afraid of, it doesn't mean that they should stop what they are doing。 。。。more

Good little book with Maya Angelou poems and artwork by Basquiat。 It's a children's book。 But are the images too scary for kids? This book caught my eye just by the title and how it is in bold capital letters with the image of the dinosaur wearing a crown over its head。 Reading this book was very short but very interesting。 The imagery is so unique and dramatic。 This short poem is about life is full of fears that a child feels and overcomes those fears。 It is a rhymed poem with an easy rhythm。 I would highly recommend every teacher to read this to their students。 I also recommend that libraries and student councilors have This book caught my eye just by the title and how it is in bold capital letters with the image of the dinosaur wearing a crown over its head。 Reading this book was very short but very interesting。 The imagery is so unique and dramatic。 This short poem is about life is full of fears that a child feels and overcomes those fears。 It is a rhymed poem with an easy rhythm。 I would highly recommend every teacher to read this to their students。 I also recommend that libraries and student councilors have this book available for whenever a student is feeling scared or frightened by something or someone。 For a classroom, I would stick this book under poetry。 。。。more

This book is amazing! The merging of the narrative of two iconoclastic artistic voices of the late 20th century is like a fever dream! It uses the calling words of Maya Angelou and they sometimes nightmarish images of Michel Basquiat。 I can’t possibly think of to contrasting artistic views that surprisingly match up so well。 In these two contrasts they feel a lot of parallels between this book and “where the wild things” are by Maurice Sendak。 The monsters in the dark, usually are only inside yo This book is amazing! By combining Maya Angelou's words with the images of Michel Basquiat, the bravery needed to face the craziness of day-to-day life is expressed professionally in Life Doesn't Frighten Me。When looking at Basquiat's pictures and pausing at Angelou's words, one must wonder about the experience Angelou has not only faced but overcome and her encouragement for the readers taking on her poetry。Through the paratext, more information about the author and the artist are being shared, as the book is enclos By combining Maya Angelou's words with the images of Michel Basquiat, the bravery needed to face the craziness of day-to-day life is expressed professionally in Life Doesn't Frighten Me。When looking at Basquiat's pictures and pausing at Angelou's words, one must wonder about the experience Angelou has not only faced but overcome and her encouragement for the readers taking on her poetry。Through the paratext, more information about the author and the artist are being shared, as the book is enclosed by a brief biographical presentation of both。 。。。more

I love how this book shows from a child's perspective。 It shoes things that may frighten the child and helps them realize that there is no need to be afraid of life。 Children who read this book will learn that there are ways to overcome fear。 There are many things that will happen to us in life and we will get past them。 Some young children may be scared by the pages but they will be able to relate to them and notice there is no need to be scared。 I love how this book shows from a child's perspective。 It shoes things that may frighten the child and helps them realize that there is no need to be afraid of life。 Children who read this book will learn that there are ways to overcome fear。 There are many things that will happen to us in life and we will get past them。 Some young children may be scared by the pages but they will be able to relate to them and notice there is no need to be scared。 。。。more

Life Doesn't Frighten Me by Maya Angelou is a poetry book that was published in 1993。 The age group is 7-12。 This book is all about things that seem scary to most kids, but aren't actually scary。 This book helps teach children not to be afraid of everything around them。 I rated this book three stars。 The plot of this book is effective because it shows how the author has a problem with being afraid of everything, but ends up being brave enough to not be afraid of anything。 The illustrations are v Life Doesn't Frighten Me by Maya Angelou is a poetry book that was published in 1993。 The age group is 7-12。 This book is all about things that seem scary to most kids, but aren't actually scary。 This book helps teach children not to be afraid of everything around them。 I rated this book three stars。 The plot of this book is effective because it shows how the author has a problem with being afraid of everything, but ends up being brave enough to not be afraid of anything。 The illustrations are very abstract。 The reader can tell what some of the drawings are supposed to be, but it's very sketchy。 The drawings of the people and animals are dark, but the backgrounds are brightly colored。 The language is also effective because it's very repetitive。 I think this book is appealing to children because it shows interesting and unique drawings。 Most kids would think this book is cool。 The words are also not just typed。 The words look like they're actually written on each page。 I could use this book in my classroom to teach my students that not everything in life is scary。 However, I would also teach them that some things are actually scary。 。。。more

This is probably my favourite poem that I have read for children。 I first read this poem last year, in my third year of University in which we were studying writing for children。 The poem since then has stuck with me due to its memorable and snappy nature, and of course the detailed illustrations from Jean Michel Basquiat。 Although the poem is supposedly only for children, I think that it is so eloquent and imaginative that adult readers would enjoy it too。 The passage: ‘Panthers in the park, st This is probably my favourite poem that I have read for children。 I first read this poem last year, in my third year of University in which we were studying writing for children。 The poem since then has stuck with me due to its memorable and snappy nature, and of course the detailed illustrations from Jean Michel Basquiat。 Although the poem is supposedly only for children, I think that it is so eloquent and imaginative that adult readers would enjoy it too。 The passage: ‘Panthers in the park, strangers in the dark。 No, they don’t frighten me at all,' for example, is clever and enlightening for any reader, and the illustrations to go along with it always add to the picture that Angelou is trying to create。 Consequently, I would recommend this book to anyone—children and adult reader alike。 I have never before read a children’s poem that I like this much。 This is a very special book, and would be a great first read for any child。 。。。more
