Thailand, July 2018。 Twelve boys and their football coach vanish into Tham Luang caves just as the monsoon rains hit。 A mile from the surface they are trapped by rising flood waters。 All attempts to reach them fail。

As hope for their survival fades a retired British firefighter tinkering with homemade cave-diving kit gets a call。

Rick Stanton and his dive partner race to the other side of the world。
The boys have been missing for days。
Each hour, their chance of escape shrinks。
Rick must swim, crawl and squeeze through treacherously tight submerged tunnels hunting for them。

But that is not the impossible part。

Because if by some miracle they're alive then somehow he must bring the boys back out again 。 。 。

He doesn't know it yet but all his life he's been training for this very moment 。 。 。

Is this particularly well-written? No。 Is it a great story fleshed out with a bunch of other great stories? Absolutely。 It was a nice companion to the other books I’ve read and documentaries I’ve watched about this rescue, from an inside perspective。 I enjoyed it a lot。

Based around his most famous exploit, the Thai football team cave rescue, the story of his life is highly engaging, well told, and pretty amazing。He comes across as a thoroughly unassuming, but very likeable, down-to-earth kind of guy - exactly the sort of stuff that heroes should be made from。A quite extraordinary man, with an extraordinary story。A great read, which I really enjoyed。

Unputdown-able, riveting。I would love to be that man's friend。 Unputdown-able, riveting。I would love to be that man's friend。 。。。more

The details of the rescue are fascinating and I enjoyed the stories of the extreme diving Stanton has done in the past。 As a reading experience I felt the book was too long and the narrator is not likeable。

I enjoyed this book! I love a good autobiography about a rescue or disaster event。 Author is a man among few elites who are experts in cave diving。 They are an unassuming bunch who love what they do。 Author has been involved in several rescues throughout the world。 I liked his thoughts on minding your business and being very astute in carefully planning and prepping for a dive。 Nothing is left to chance。 He struggled with the Thai Govt and Thai Navy Seals due to language and customs barriers。 Th I enjoyed this book! Rick Stanton did such a good job of telling this story with so much details factually laid out, and yet it shared the emotional impact of this event and his life, so well。 It was incredibly interesting, even though I didn't really know anything about the Thai Cave Rescue or cave diving in advance。 Rick Stanton did such a good job of telling this story with so much details factually laid out, and yet it shared the emotional impact of this event and his life, so well。 It was incredibly interesting, even though I didn't really know anything about the Thai Cave Rescue or cave diving in advance。 。。。more

Note: I spent 10 years exploring, mapping, and rappeling/climbing in caves in 4 states and also did both open water and cavern diving so my review is biased。 Having said so, this book is one of the best pure adventure narratives I have read。 Not only does the author, a British cave diver with 40+ years experience, narrate his leadership in the 2018 underwater rescue of 13 young men in a flooded Thailand cave, he describes dozens of extreme cave diving exploration trips into caves across the glob Note: I spent 10 years exploring, mapping, and rappeling/climbing in caves in 4 states and also did both open water and cavern diving so my review is biased。 Having said so, this book is one of the best pure adventure narratives I have read。 Not only does the author, a British cave diver with 40+ years experience, narrate his leadership in the 2018 underwater rescue of 13 young men in a flooded Thailand cave, he describes dozens of extreme cave diving exploration trips into caves across the globe while progressively innovating his equipment and skills。 。。。more

Excellent insight into the world of extreme cave diving

Fascinating, un-put-downable, amusing and dramatic in equal measure。 The insight into the Thai cave rescue of the boys is so impelling。 Great book。

Ótrúleg bók bæði frásögn af björgun Wild boars í tælenska hellinum og ótrúlegar lýsingar af ferli og framvæmd hellakafana við aðstæður sem maður getur varla ímyndað sér。 Rick sem var slökkviliðsmaður í 25 ár hefur líka mjög skýra sýn á björgunarstörf sem hægt er að draga verðmætan lærdóm af。

Andrew Long

Surprisingly well written and captivating。Not just a gripping story of the most famous cave rescue ever but also an incredibly interesting and detailed account of a life spent exploring underwater caves。
