It always amazes me when authors write about books within books - they should have to simultaneously publish the fake book!I enjoyed this one a lot- the main characters seem so real and human。 The way they interact felt very true to life and led to some great character development for them both。 The supporting characters are also top tier and I would absolutely read their stories!I want someone to give me a free trip to Greece too。On another note - this book might be the only contender for "comp It always amazes me when authors write about books within books - they should have to simultaneously publish the fake book!I enjoyed this one a lot- the main characters seem so real and human。 The way they interact felt very true to life and led to some great character development for them both。 The supporting characters are also top tier and I would absolutely read their stories!I want someone to give me a free trip to Greece too。On another note - this book might be the only contender for "completely and fully edited of unnecessary pages" book I've read in SOME TIME。 。。。more

3。5 StarsIt’s funny to me that a book about an editor and an author feels like an early draft of a book that could have been epic。There were pieces of awesome in this book, but as a whole it was weak。 It didn’t live up to its potential and that makes me sad。

I loved this book。 I hadn’t really read the back before I started, just wanted something light and fun to read, and it was that and more。 Following the journey of the characters through the novel had the ability to just suck me in and I couldn’t put it down。 Read it in one sitting。 The characters were fantastic。 I really felt like Lanie sometimes because she was such a realistically written character me to。 A stagnant relationship that you just can’t admit to yourself isn’t going anywhere and th I loved this book。 I hadn’t really read the back before I started, just wanted something light and fun to read, and it was that and more。 Following the journey of the characters through the novel had the ability to just suck me in and I couldn’t put it down。 Read it in one sitting。 The characters were fantastic。 I really felt like Lanie sometimes because she was such a realistically written character me to。 A stagnant relationship that you just can’t admit to yourself isn’t going anywhere and the numbness when you admit it to yourself and end it。 Then the crying that happens after the shock。 After that, the concept of the book written in the novel really brought it all together and made it worth reading in my eyes。 Such an enjoyable read and can’t wait to share with my friends 。。。more

3。5 stars。 A quick and lighthearted read。 I loved how the characters got to know each other, even though the burn was infuriatingly slow。 There weren’t a ton of swoon worthy moments for me, but I enjoyed the fast pace of the story and found myself smiling often while reading。 *I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review。

Cutesy, but just ok。 I feel like the author was trying hard to be quotable so there are universal, pseudo-deep truths that seem to be forced into scenes without fitting the vibe。

It was okay。。。 but kind of underwhelming。 I expected more; more chemistry, more scenes with the LI, more logic maybe (I still don't understand why Lanie disliked Noah so much if they met only once and talked for like 2 minutes?)。 I did love Noah's idea for the book and those chapters from his book we got to read。 This could be a really interesting story and I'd totally read it! Loved it! Great story, fun characters, multiple love stories interwoven through the past, present reality and the novel Noa is crafting。Often sweet (PG) and a little bit swoony!Would recommend。

A cute, quick read, but not swoon-worthy。 They actually don't spend that much time together in the book for me to fall in love with them。 A cute, quick read, but not swoon-worthy。 They actually don't spend that much time together in the book for me to fall in love with them。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I agonized over how to review this book。 There is a “Big Reveal” that almost everyone is treating as a secret。 Most reviews don’t tell what the secret is。 The book jacket doesn’t tell what the secret is。 I don’t even think it deserves to be a secret。 It comes about a quarter of the way through the book。 Usually spoilers alerts are reserved for later developments。 And there is plenty of foreshadowing, plenty of dots to connect。 I guessed it right away。 When it happened, I wasn’t even surprised。 B I agonized over how to review this book。 There is a “Big Reveal” that almost everyone is treating as a secret。 Most reviews don’t tell what the secret is。 The book jacket doesn’t tell what the secret is。 I don’t even think it deserves to be a secret。 It comes about a quarter of the way through the book。 Usually spoilers alerts are reserved for later developments。 And there is plenty of foreshadowing, plenty of dots to connect。 I guessed it right away。 When it happened, I wasn’t even surprised。 But fine, for the tender hearted out there, I will mark this review as containing spoilers, so that we can discuss the one most interesting and important thing that happens in the book。 The popular romance author, whom everyone assumes is a woman, is really a man。The story is that Lanie is an editor at romance publishing house Peony Press。 Peony’s star author and best seller is Noa Calloway。 No one has ever seen her。 She doesn’t give interviews。 She doesn’t show up for events。 Even though Lanie has been helping edit Noa’s books for years, she has never seen her, or even talked to her on the phone。 They correspond by email only。 Noa Calloway is the whole reason Lanie is working at Peony Press。 Because Noa changed Lanie’s life。 When Lanie read Noa’s book, Ninety-Nine Things I’m Going to Love About You, Lanie made her own list of 99 qualities she wanted her future mate to have, actually wrote them down, in the back cover of the book。 Then she met a man who met all 99, and became engaged to him。Ryan is a good guy。 There’s nothing really wrong with him。 Except that he wants a political career in Washington, and Lanie wants to continue her editorial job in New York, so how is this marriage thing going to work? At just about the same time Lanie realizes it isn’t, and breaks up with Ryan, she gets a promotion at work。 Lanie is going to become Noa Calloway’s head editor。 But only if she can get her to deliver the manuscript, which is four months late。 Lanie signs a non-disclosure agreement, and then arranges a meeting with her idol。 It doesn’t go well。 As soon as Lanie realizes that Noa is actually Noah, a man, she feels that she has been betrayed, and that everything she had believed was a lie。 She wants nothing more to do with this Noah。 Except that she needs her job, so she is determined to get a book out of him, which she makes a plan to do。 Noah is feeling bored with New York City, where his previous books have been set。 Lanie decides to take him to some of her favorite spots, with the hope that inspiration will strike him。 This sounds suspiciously like dating, without it actually being dating。 Which is one of the things I loved about the book。 At the beginning the stakes are low。 The expectations are low。 Although Lanie admits that she felt a tingle the first time she shook Noah’s hand, so there is some frisson of attraction, their relationship begins with them having an easy rapport, just talking together。 I have long believed that the best friends make the best lovers, and I liked that they took the slow road。I also liked that the author didn’t feel the need to drag me over the emotional coals。 After their disastrous first meeting, and another time later in the book when Noah is “brusque” with Lanie, the book progresses gradually, as real romances usually do。 I didn’t even realize until I got to the end that there wasn’t any S-E-X (yet!)。 The story was mostly sweet and pleasant, and I enjoyed reading it。I never did get what was such a big deal about Noah being a man。 If you like a story, why should you care about the sex of the author? Didn’t these people ever hear of Nicholas F***ing Sparks, I wondered? Although I admit it was hard to think of a second male author of romances。 So I Googled it。 And it turns out, among certain people, the romance genre is a kind of political statement。 Women have been written so badly by some male authors for so many years (that is true), that they look at romance as something “by us, for us,” the place where women get to create and enjoy strong characters who get what they want, and do things their way。 These readers would have felt betrayed to learn that their favorite author was a man。There have been a few men who had a successful career in romance, writing under a pseudonym。 Usually it was the publishers who asked them to use a pseudonym, although it probably also just made things easier。But let’s talk about that pseudonym。 I found the idea that Noa without the H would be automatically assumed to be a female name very unconvincing。 I do know of one female Noa (although I don’t know how she spells it), but I know of a great many male Noahs。 To me the name Noah, however you spell it, screams male。 It’s not like calling yourself Jessica or Catherine or Amanda。 If I heard someone talking about an author called Noa Calloway, I would have assumed it was a male, and probably many others would have, too。 I know there are names where a spelling change distinguishes a female from a male name (Jo/Joe, Toni/Tony, Jean/Gene), but the idea that just leaving off the H on the end of Noah is going to fool everyone strikes me as silly as the idea that no one can tell Clark Kent is Superman because he wears glasses。 But back to what I liked。 I liked Noa Calloway’s book。 He does deliver on time, and the excerpt included was both sweet and clever, and was indeed very romantic。 。。。more

great premise, but i feel like the execution was a bit lacking? idk, but i would've preferred if the romance was built up more。 other than that, this was a great fluffy read amidst these stressful times 😌 great premise, but i feel like the execution was a bit lacking? idk, but i would've preferred if the romance was built up more。 other than that, this was a great fluffy read amidst these stressful times 😌 。。。more

By Any Other Name by Lauren Kate is a story centered around book publishing where an editor got promoted and is in charge of the bestselling author, Noa Callaway。 Little does she know that behind the persona is actually a man and as they plan the premise of a new book, sparks fly off。 It's a story about a new beginning, love and books。This book seems very close to me as I work as an editor myself but not in the romance category。 It is such a pleasure to read a story that resonates so much to me By Any Other Name by Lauren Kate is a story centered around book publishing where an editor got promoted and is in charge of the bestselling author, Noa Callaway。 Little does she know that behind the persona is actually a man and as they plan the premise of a new book, sparks fly off。 It's a story about a new beginning, love and books。This book seems very close to me as I work as an editor myself but not in the romance category。 It is such a pleasure to read a story that resonates so much to me in terms of my love of books, writing and this industry as a whole。 I was even more excited when the premise itself is similar to a chinese drama that I absolutely enjoyed watching called Moonlight。The story is pretty good, the only thing I'm not a fan of is Lanie's ex and I'm so glad she finally opened up her eyes and dumped him。 Also, the romance was very minimal too, I need more。 The pacing of the story is nice and I like the main characters and they're so relatable since they're a huge fan of books too。 All in all, this is a fun book about New York, creating stories and falling in love。 I would totally recommend it to those who may enjoy this kind of book。 。。。more

A nice, easy readI really enjoyed this book because it was such an easy read for me。 Lots going on, but the characters were likable and the flow was steady。 I will admit to thinking of Nicholas Sparks as I was reading。 The questioning of lies and half truths was insightful。 Also, the fact that the characters seemed real and had faults and depth was appreciated。

Wow! What a sweet delightful book about being your true self and finding true love。 I laughed, I cried, and celebrated with the characters。 Will definitely be reading more of this author soon。

Short, cute, refreshing。 I like the premise and I like that there is no fiance/crush overlap。 I hate when protagonists emotionally cheat on their significant others and we're supposed to be happy about it。 Short, cute, refreshing。 I like the premise and I like that there is no fiance/crush overlap。 I hate when protagonists emotionally cheat on their significant others and we're supposed to be happy about it。 。。。more

By Any Other Name was fun and interesting, especially because I love meta books about the publishing industry and readers。 My only complaints are that the romance didn't really start until about halfway through the book, and I didn't feel much romantic tension。 They pretty much liked each other right away and there wasn't any genuine conflict keeping them apart。 The conflict with Noa not wanting to "disappoint" readers by revealing their true identity was pretty hard to believe and didn't really By Any Other Name was fun and interesting, especially because I love meta books about the publishing industry and readers。 My only complaints are that the romance didn't really start until about halfway through the book, and I didn't feel much romantic tension。 They pretty much liked each other right away and there wasn't any genuine conflict keeping them apart。 The conflict with Noa not wanting to "disappoint" readers by revealing their true identity was pretty hard to believe and didn't really seem like an actual issue。 Overall, I enjoyed this one, but it's not one I'll reread。 。。。more

ITS SO GOOD! It's not my typical book but I'm reading because I read everything Lauren Kate writes! So I was a little nervous if I would like it since it's not my genre of choice。 But Lauren Kate has done it again folks。 She really has a way of bringing you into a novel。 It's funny, and interesting! What an absolutely surprising and fun read! I rarely read the synopsis of a book before I read it, but the cover of By Any Other Name sold me right away。 This enemies-to-lovers romance features an editor, her best-selling author and one life-changing secret。 Lanie has it all。 A successful editing career and an engagement to the perfect man。 When she's given the opportunity of a lifetime to work with her favorite (and international best-selling) author, Noa Callaway, Lanie jumps at the chance。 Bu What an absolutely surprising and fun read! Any time you can center a book around publishing books, I'm sold! Lanie was a dynamic character and I loved her journey throughout。 She was quirky, sweet, and determined。 Her pet turtle was nothing short of hilarious。 I was really drawn to Noah's character, especially with his personal struggles that he faces privately。 The exchanges Lanie and him have over this was touching and emotional。 I love when heroes show their vulnerability。 This was a slow burn, closed door romance that is heartwarming and hilarious。 Lanie and Noah had amazing banter and I loved the cast of characters that surrounded them。 Throw in the NYC setting and it had me smiling the entire way through。 As an added bonus, I adored the inclusion of Noa's book and how it tied the story together。 。。。more

This felt like someone published the sparknotes to a rom-com。 The book was not long enough to make the characters or plot line feel real。 Nor was there anything to get me emotionally invested in the book。 It was cute but meh。
