Summary

Bound by blood。
Tempted by desire。
Unleashed by destiny。

Bryce Quinlan had the perfect life—working hard all day and partying all night—until a demon murdered her closest friends, leaving her bereft, wounded, and alone。 When the accused is behind bars but the crimes start up again, Bryce finds herself at the heart of the investigation。 She’ll do whatever it takes to avenge their deaths。

Hunt Athalar is a notorious Fallen angel, now enslaved to the Archangels he once attempted to overthrow。 His brutal skills and incredible strength have been set to one purpose—to assassinate his boss’s enemies, no questions asked。 But with a demon wreaking havoc in the city, he’s offered an irresistible deal: help Bryce find the murderer, and his freedom will be within reach。

As Bryce and Hunt dig deep into Crescent City’s underbelly, they discover a dark power that threatens everything and everyone they hold dear, and they find, in each other, a blazing passion—one that could set them both free, if they’d only let it。

With unforgettable characters, sizzling romance, and page-turning suspense, this richly inventive new fantasy series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Sarah J。 Maas delves into the heartache of loss, the price of freedom—and the power of love。

3。85 stars。 Was slow to start but I really liked the last 1/3 of the book。 Definitely different than ACOTAR but still enjoyable。

Apprehension was my beginning, and love was my ending。 "Through love, all is possible" I finished this hours ago but still, I am so lost for words as to even begin to describe the events in this first book and just how emotionally attached became to this incredible world and its characters which overcame me with absolute bliss and tears。Though it took me nearly a whole month to read, the experience of it all and the growing attachments between Bryce and Hunt were absolutely worth every last page Apprehension was my beginning, and love was my ending。 "Through love, all is possible" I finished this hours ago but still, I am so lost for words as to even begin to describe the events in this first book and just how emotionally attached became to this incredible world and its characters which overcame me with absolute bliss and tears。Though it took me nearly a whole month to read, the experience of it all and the growing attachments between Bryce and Hunt were absolutely worth every last page, I enjoyed this way more than I could ever believe。 The mystery murder aspects, the budding slow-burn romance, the pain and sacrifices along with happy tender moments were everything that I didn't know that I needed。 Tears have fallen down as my heart shattered at some of our characters' breaking points and that is what hit home for me, I am astounded by the love I now have for this book。 I already miss everything about it, so many aspects that I adored such as love and friendship。 。。。more

i have。。 so much to say about this book。 this book is probably about 400 pages too long。 so many chapters felt super redundant and despite how long the book was, there was really poor world building- i didn’t really /get/ crescent city。 also sorry to be all prudish but the amount of swearing was unbelievableeeee and cheapened the already questionable and extremely lacklustre writing。in terms of the characters, they all felt pretty 2D。 of course, byrce had every man in crescent city literally ins i have。。 so much to say about this book。 this book is probably about 400 pages too long。 so many chapters felt super redundant and despite how long the book was, there was really poor world building- i didn’t really /get/ crescent city。 also sorry to be all prudish but the amount of swearing was unbelievableeeee and cheapened the already questionable and extremely lacklustre writing。in terms of the characters, they all felt pretty 2D。 of course, byrce had every man in crescent city literally instantly horny for her (love that for her) and her character, generally speaking, was completely indistinguishable from every other high fantasy female protagonist; she was ‘sassy’, smart and OBVIOUSLY the hottest girl in town。 hunt’s character was only marginally better written (key word: marginally)。but my REAL issue with this novel was the questionable language choices made…。 ‘he purred’ ‘she snarled’ ‘he growled’ ‘she roared’…。 AAAAAAAAAAAAA。 WHY WHY WHY on earth does Sarah J Maas repeat these unholy descriptive verbs every other line。 i have never in my life heard ANYONE purr when they’re speaking to me but apparently it’s the done thing in crescent city。 these verbs made me feel so violently ill that it actually completely took me out of the novel every time they were used (which was a lot btw)yet。。 all of that being said… did i somehow manage to mainly enjoy this book? yes。 God only knows how。 nearly every element of this book was badly done, yet SOMEHOW i didn’t entirely hate it。 i even cried twice。 congrats sarah。 you won。 i honestly think what let this book down was the editing。 sarah j maas clearly knows how to write an entertaining book, she just needs someone to realllllllllly rein her in。 i might change my mind on my 3 star rating, but it feels right for now。 。。。more

Loved it。 I was confused by the first couple chapters (it is a lot of world building)。 After getting half way through the book, I suggest re-reading the first few chapters again。 I really enjoyed the easter eggs scattered throughout the book from Maas' other series。 I can't wait to see where book 2 takes Bryce and Hunt! I like that this was a fantasy 'who done it?' and some of my guesses were right and others were not。 I find the political structure based on species (for lack of a better term) to be a little boring with one ruling class, but hopefully the next book follows up on parts of the Summit's outcome that I want explored。 I like that this was a fantasy 'who done it?' and some of my guesses were right and others were not。 I find the political structure based on species (for lack of a better term) to be a little boring with one ruling class, but hopefully the next book follows up on parts of the Summit's outcome that I want explored。 。。。more

This book was way too long。 I actually really loved it and, in true Suze fashion, shed more than a few tears at the end, I just wish it was a little shorter。 I don't think we needed this many pages to tell this story。 This book was way too long。 I actually really loved it and, in true Suze fashion, shed more than a few tears at the end, I just wish it was a little shorter。 I don't think we needed this many pages to tell this story。 。。。more

“That’s the point of it Bryce。 Of life。 To live, to love, knowing that it might all vanish tomorrow。 It makes everything that much more precious。” Not going to lie this one took me a while to get into but once I did Sarah did what she did best and made me feel all the feels。 The way Bryce and Danika loved each other was so beautiful and the plot twists as per usual were top tier

honestly, one of my favourite book from sarah。 the plot is incredible, i could not put the book down once, and the characters are really great ! i recommend this book a hundred percent。

WOW! It blows my mind how someone can create a world, with storylines for each character and how they all connect。 Amazing。 Great story! I’ll admit, it was a bit slow at first learning the world and the characters, but it all came together in an amazing way!

2。5/5I was truly excited to read this one。 An adult fantasy with some crime and mystery solving? Sign me up。 This book is basically 300 pages too long and it got SO BORING。 The characters are weirdly developed, you know something about them but it's superficial and I mean after 800 pages I'd like to know more than three bullet points about one character。 Also, it's basically the same plot as other SJM stories。 Seeing how everyone was hyping this book I really was expecting something a bit more o 2。5/5I was truly excited to read this one。 An adult fantasy with some crime and mystery solving? Yes, this book was long as hell, but I promise you it’s a million times better than any of the ACOTAR books。 I was skeptical of reading anything else by Sarah as I wasn't too fond of acotar。 I bought this book not knowing she wrote it, and I’m so glad I did。 The characters had me laughing and crying。 Bryce is definitely in the top 10 of my MC list。 Excited to see where Sarah takes this series! This book was a rough start for me which is why it’s a 4 star and not a 5 star。 There is a lot of world building that takes place in the first several chapters as well as some unexpected events。 But because of the information overload I couldn’t physically sit down and read it。 I had to use an audio book version to get through the first part before I could sit down and read the physical book。 Overall I think it’s a great book, lots of character building and relationship building and one of my fa This book was a rough start for me which is why it’s a 4 star and not a 5 star。 There is a lot of world building that takes place in the first several chapters as well as some unexpected events。 But because of the information overload I couldn’t physically sit down and read it。 I had to use an audio book version to get through the first part before I could sit down and read the physical book。 Overall I think it’s a great book, lots of character building and relationship building and one of my favorite romance tropes was in this book。 This book did follow some typical themes of SJM but that’s not a bad thing overall。 I was laughing and crying at various different points of reading this and once I was hooked I binged to finish。 Can’t wait to start the next book。 。。。more

I am shocked at this not being 5 stars for me。 I'm also very conflicted。 Part of me wants to give the book 3 stars because it was SO BORING for over half of it, but the ending was definitely very twisty and interesting。 Plus the end made me super emotional, even though it was cliche and cheesy。 It still got to me。 I think 4 is a generous rating for this。 SJM books all have similarities and a very safe, warm, cozy feel。 Her writing and tropes are comfortable and familiar, but I just really hated I am shocked at this not being 5 stars for me。 I'm also very conflicted。 Part of me wants to give the book 3 stars because it was SO BORING for over half of it, but the ending was definitely very twisty and interesting。 Plus the end made me super emotional, even though it was cliche and cheesy。 It still got to me。 I think 4 is a generous rating for this。 SJM books all have similarities and a very safe, warm, cozy feel。 Her writing and tropes are comfortable and familiar, but I just really hated this urban setting。 A lot。 I'll definitely be reading book 2, but I'm not hanging on the edge of my seat for more。 I'm mostly disappointed。 My heart is saying 3 stars。 UGH。 Maybe 3。5。。。and I'll round it。 。。。more

Before I start, I cry at everything。 This book gave me a headache because I sat for over three hours finishing it and constantly crying。 Tugged at the heart strings so much。 And the sexual tension made me want to violently shake the book。

I normally put a lot of effort into typing up a nice short synopsis, but there's way too much going on in this book for that。 Just know it's about a half-fae, half-human named Bryce, an angel named Hunt, and a world filled with magical beings。 Oh, and the entire book is fantasy meets mystery thriller。This book has left me with the biggest book hangover, but the good kind! I loved it so so much! The first 100 pages are pretty much just world-building and setting the stage for the actual story to take place。 It's pretty slow and a bit confusing, and honestly had me feeling pretty eh。 And then it picked up。 VERY SUDDENLY AND QUICKLY。 And from that point on, it's truly an absolute rollercoaster of emotions。 I laughed, cried, screamed, and threw my kindle, many times。 I absolutely love Bryce, she is such a bad ass。 I felt so connected with all of the characters really, something I can't say I've felt in awhile。 I love Maas's portrayal of grief。 It was a recurring theme in this book and something I can heavily relate to。 It felt so real and raw。 Honestly, there's so much I want to say but I just don't have the words。 The one negative thing is something I also felt about ACOTAR。 Maas's writing style is a bit cringy at times。 I can't explain it, but just something about it makes me cringe a little。 But her ability to create these wild, emotional stories and fascinating characters 100% makes up for it。 This is obvious, as I am rating this 5 stars。 I cannot rate a book that absolutely ruined me like this any less than 5 stars。To sum it up, I loved it and I am so excited (and scared) to read the second book! 。。。more
