The new National Geographic Treasury of Greek Mythology offers timeless stories of Greek myths in a beautiful new volume。 Brought to life with lyrical text by award-winning author Donna Jo Napoli and stunning artwork by award-winning illustrator Christina Balit, the tales of gods and goddesses such as Zeus, Aphrodite, Apollo, and Athena and heroes and monsters such as Helen of Troy, Perseus, and Medusa will fascinate and engage children’s imaginations。

National Geographic completes the book with embellishments of each story: sidebars for each god, goddess, hero, and monster link the myths to constellations, geography, history, and culture to help young readers connect the stories to real life events, people, and places。 A family tree and a “cast of characters” profile page help make relationships between the characters clear, and a mapping feature adds to the fun and fascination。 Resource notes and ample back matter directing readers to more information round out this luminous book。 Sure to dazzle all those intrigued with the fantastic tales of Greek mythology and enchant new readers, this vibrant book will soon become a family keepsake。

this gives you a SUPER brief synopsis of the most well-known gods/goddesses。 for what it is, it’s not bad。 i really appreciated that the author didn’t leave out that zeus was a fuckboy lol just because he’s the god of gods doesn’t mean he’s great lol

Julia DelaRosa

Colorful depiction that makes it more interesting 。

Wasnt a bad read, a bit short on each character and it seemed maybe a bit rushed。 Id give it a 2。

Compared to the Norse and Egyptian myths that Napoli writes about in the other books in this series, the stories here are condensed to such an extent that they lose much of their rich colour。

5/5 starsYASSSSSSSSSSSSSS。 I LOVED THIS BOOK IT WAS AMAZING。 YASSSSSSS GREEK MYTHOLOGY。 Okay, whew, glad that's out of my system。 As you already know, I adored this book。 Obviously。 I fell head over heels for Greek Mythology after I finished the amazing book The Song Of Achilles by Madeline Miller。 Now, I have a lot more knowledge on the basic gods and goddesses that started everything and BOY DO THEY HAVE A LOT OF KIDS。 I mean, take Zeus。 I hate this guy by the way because who doesn't? He's a total piece of shit, all-powerful, entitled piece of useless trash that has nothing to do other than marry beautiful goddesses and mortals that will bear him children。 Sure, he may have loved a few of his wives truly, but come on dude。 Can you even list the names of all of your wives and children? Do you even know that some of them exist? You don't even know how many women you've married。 That's messed up dude。 Anyways, the point I was trying to make before I starting beating Zeus up about his wives and children was that the Greek men thought themselves to be entitled to literally any and every women and literally every god or mortal hero or whatever as at least one famous child。 Zeus, for example, as so fricking many, like Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Hermes, Dionysus, Helen, etc。 And all of the Greek gods literally wanted to have the ability that women have, giving birth。 LIKE, BETCH WHAT? F OFF YOU IDIOTS THAT BELONGS TO US WOMEN ONLY。 That's really it。 I saw a lot of familiar characters like Circe, Helios, Aietes (Or Aeetes, according to Madeline Miller), Circe's sister Pasiphae, Minos, the Minotaur, Odysseus, Paris, Agamemnon, Thetis, Achilles, etc。 BUT I WAS FURIOUS, LITERALLY FURIOUS, WHEN NAPOLI DIDN'T MENTION PATROCLUS IN HELEN'S CHAPTER WHEN THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT ACHILLES。 Patroclus was the main characters, not even Achilles, in the Trojan War。 Well, that's not entirely true, but if you talk about Achilles, then you don't leave out my baby Patroclus。 That is a sin。 I was furious at this fact, but that's just my unsolicited opinion。 Okay, now that's all of it。 I loved a lot of the gods, goddesses, mortal, heroes, etc。 Actually, this book cleared up 2 things for me。 1), I made the mistake of putting Apollo as the God Of War in my Science Project because I was talking about Mars and how ancient civilizations called it Mars after their God of War and because it looked like blood。 Then I read the chapter on Apollo last night and his title was "God of Music" and I was like "Oh shit"。 So I ran to my computer, more like jumped out of my bed and took 2 steps to my chair, and fixed my mistake on my project。 Phew。 A bullet dodged。 And 2), AND I FORGOT WHAT I WAS GOING TO SAY DAMN IT。 I will edit this review if it comes back to me。 。。。。Wait I know what I was going to say。 Let's try this again。 AND 2), I thought that Heracles and Hercules were two different heroes who both just happened to be extremely strong。 But this book cleared that up and told me that HERCULES is the hero Heracles' Roman name。 But I think that Hercules has always been seen as the Roman equivalent of Heracles, which means that they were and might still be considered 2 different people。 Okay, now THAT'S IT。 I swear。 No recommendation for anything because I haven't watched, read, heard, or done anything that is worth recommending。 Okay bye。 。。。more

1/26/2022: I thought I had already marked this one as read…Review:This is the book that introduced me to Greek myths。 It’s shortened, I think for younger readers, which is to bad since it means the stories aren’t as full as they could be。 They lack some (crucial) details。 For example, that Medusa was once human but was turned into a gorgon by Athena (for something that wasn’t her fault)。 It also doesn’t include other stories, such as Pandora’s box or Arachne’s web or Daedalus & Icarus。 Another t 1/26/2022: I thought I had already marked this one as read…Review:This is the book that introduced me to Greek myths。 It’s shortened, I think for younger readers, which is to bad since it means the stories aren’t as full as they could be。 They lack some (crucial) details。 For example, that Medusa was once human but was turned into a gorgon by Athena (for something that wasn’t her fault)。 It also doesn’t include other stories, such as Pandora’s box or Arachne’s web or Daedalus & Icarus。 Another thing: in this, Helios and Selene are the sun and the moon, whereas other stories claim Apollo and Artemis to be—it would have been nice if such information was included。 I myself got confused when someone said that Helios/Selene weren’t actually the sun/moon。Still a nice read if you have a couple hours, and has good illustrations。I will prolly think of more later。 。。。more

A quick read, but not my favourite of the bunch of her books so far。 Maybe I felt this way because I’ve been reading a lot on Greek Myths, Heroes, Gods & Goddesses recently and already knew some of the stories and felt these retellings weren’t always the best/most accurate。 (Makes me wonder how the Norse and Arabian Nights ones actually were since I liked those as I didn’t know the stories that much and they gave me a good taster/starting point…)For example: yes, this is meant for a more juvenil A quick read, but not my favourite of the bunch of her books so far。 Maybe I felt this way because I’ve been reading a lot on Greek Myths, Heroes, Gods & Goddesses recently and already knew some of the stories and felt these retellings weren’t always the best/most accurate。 (Makes me wonder how the Norse and Arabian Nights ones actually were since I liked those as I didn’t know the stories that much and they gave me a good taster/starting point…)For example: yes, this is meant for a more juvenile audience, but saying Zeus was “married to” every woman he attacked/impregnated was really a false impression of the circumstances。 Also, Theseus is said to have “married” Ariadne and then an Amazonian woman (she has a name, it is Hippolyta - that is not mentioned)。 Pretty sure in no stories does he ever marry either and Phaedra, his actual wife, is never mentioned either。 There is a ton of info crammed into the stories, so kudos to her for being able to find a way to condense them at all。 Sometimes I did think if you didn’t have a based knowledge of the tales already they’d be too overwhelming though。 Next I have the Egyptian one to read and I LOVE Ancient Egypt, but am not as well versed in ALL at he bit myths/tales, so will be interesting to see my take on those… So far my reviews have gone from 4 stars (Arabian Nights) to 3。75 (Norse) to this one (I’d say 3。25)。 。。。more

When I started reading this coffee table size book, I enjoyed the structural layout of the book。。 There is a good size illustrated page of the individual God/Goddess with blocked text along with more illustrations, either a pattern or a scene。 I liked how the book began with Mother Gaia going into the genealogical timeframe。 My attention started to wane around the introduction of Zeus's child Athena。 It could be that I should have used this book more as reference to look at one God/Goddess at a When I started reading this coffee table size book, I enjoyed the structural layout of the book。。 There is a good size illustrated page of the individual God/Goddess with blocked text along with more illustrations, either a pattern or a scene。 I liked how the book began with Mother Gaia going into the genealogical timeframe。 My attention started to wane around the introduction of Zeus's child Athena。 It could be that I should have used this book more as reference to look at one God/Goddess at a time and not as a sit down to read it in one sitting。 I do enjoy reading Mythology and how different perspectives and different ways of telling their story I can always find something to add to my Mythology collection。 I enjoyed the first half but it lost my interest in the second half。 I am now nervous to read the Egyptian Mythology for I am more of a beginner in that area, and I don't want to lose interest so early in the New Year。 I might use that book as a reference as I study upon that topic。 January Reading Theme: Mythology 2022 。。。more

The illustrations are the real star of this one。 Not the best Greek mythology retelling, but not the worst either。

Amber Hatch

While this book was somewhat interesting, it was very disorganized。 It jumped back and for between timelines that I was unsure who belong where。 Also, the author was very biased about the gods/goddesses。

Vicki

Obviously written for children or young adults, it leaves an adult listener wanting more detail。 Good stories but far too short。

Jason

Concise and eminently readable - author has a gift for making these stories come to life。 Gets complicated in places, but that's par for the course。 Concise and eminently readable - author has a gift for making these stories come to life。 Gets complicated in places, but that's par for the course。 。。。more

For some reason, I kind of liked the Norse Mythology book better。 But this is also good and the stories on the Greek heroes were really exciting and made me read way past bedtime。

I’ll say it again, I LOVE Greek mythology。 This was a perfect little summary of stories to give someone a direct picture of the most popular Greek gods。

Teri-K

Nice version of the myths, fascinating illustrations。 This was a good way to brush up on what's gotten hazy over the years。 Not for little kids, it's clear about the violence and sex that goes on in these myths, though it doesn't celebrate them。 Nice version of the myths, fascinating illustrations。 This was a good way to brush up on what's gotten hazy over the years。 Not for little kids, it's clear about the violence and sex that goes on in these myths, though it doesn't celebrate them。 。。。more

I gave one star for the illustration。 I really dislike the way the author presented the stories。 It comes across as biased, self-centred and misleading。 The author puts a lot of personal views and imaginations in the stories。 It is really not what I was expecting from the title - 'classic stories of 。。。'。 She talks too much about how these Gods and Goddesses would feel in her own imagination, while writes so little about the stories。 Sometimes she puts only one sentence down for important detail I gave one star for the illustration。 I really dislike the way the author presented the stories。 It comes across as biased, self-centred and misleading。 The author puts a lot of personal views and imaginations in the stories。 It is really not what I was expecting from the title - 'classic stories of 。。。'。 She talks too much about how these Gods and Goddesses would feel in her own imagination, while writes so little about the stories。 Sometimes she puts only one sentence down for important details。 Not recommended for those who want to learn about greek mythology。 。。。more

I guess I learned a little bit。 It didn't really captivate me, and I can't tell whether that's because of the story telling style or because I'm just not all that interested in Greek mythology。 Others are all into it so I thought I'd give it yet another shot。 Oh well! First off, THE ILLUSTRATIONS ARE SOOOO GOOD and the fits the style of myths very nicely。 I'm seriously impressed with how this book came to look。 Good job Balit! Everything from the pictures to the borders to the text to the aesthetic looks perfect to me。 The writing is nice too。 There is vivid detail and I can imagine the details and the perfects in my head。 The tone helped bring the "style" of the Greek myths to life。 Also, I liked the connections to other cultures, human nature, and things in First off, THE ILLUSTRATIONS ARE SOOOO GOOD and the fits the style of myths very nicely。 I'm seriously impressed with how this book came to look。 Good job Balit! This is really good, each myth is cut down to a few pages so its easy to get through。 Sometimes its worded really weird, so you have to go back and figure out what it was say before it makes sense。

Mythology has always been my favourite genre to read especially Greek。 This was enjoyable but I’ve read better。 I do like how it had little facts here and there that I’ve never seen before and overall it was a great experience。

Greek Mythology, along with Celtic and other types of folklore, have been of interest to me ever since I took my first credit in Classics, back in Grade 9。 Having been with my husband whose family is from an island in Greece, for over 25 years, I have had occasion to study the Greek myths a bit more。 Now that my son is in Greek school, I find Hellenic mythology to be a fun way of sharing in the culture and historical stories。 This Treasury of Greek Mythology will be the first of many compilation Greek Mythology, along with Celtic and other types of folklore, have been of interest to me ever since I took my first credit in Classics, back in Grade 9。 Having been with my husband whose family is from an island in Greece, for over 25 years, I have had occasion to study the Greek myths a bit more。 Now that my son is in Greek school, I find Hellenic mythology to be a fun way of sharing in the culture and historical stories。 This Treasury of Greek Mythology will be the first of many compilations that will adorn our coffee table over the coming years, I'm sure。 Donna Jo Napoli's versions have been released by National Geographic, in this anthology, and they were not a bad introduction for my precocious 7 year old。 Although some were sparse in detail, the illustrations for each story were a double page spread, and quite striking。 There were also bright and alluring interpretive pictures throughout the text, that helped depict the highlighted points along the way。 The collection gets a 3。5 stars from me with a whole 2 of those stars for the artwork。 。。。more

3。5 stars。 I really enjoyed her storytelling, and the bits of extra information related to other cultures or literary themes, but it’s just all the best known gods, goddesses, and heroes and their stories, nothing out of the ordinary。

I learned so much about Greek Mythology and this brought back memories of what I learned in school decades ago。 I agree with the author that those gods had too much time on their hands。 They brought so much misery to themselves and to humans。
