This was tremendous。 The book has a slow burn for the first third as the crew finds themselves in different corners of the solar system, then with one monstrous act everything goes to hell (in a good, literary way)。 Totally nonstop action after that。 Fantastic installment and a paradigm shift in the plot。 Nice job guys。

This was my favorite Expanse book so far。 It was SO heavily focused on character。 There was still action, but much less of it than in previous books, and we really got to delve into the minds of all the Roci crew。

The fun continues with book 5Another fun tale from Corey。 It keeps you guessing until the end and leaves you wanting more! Excited to read the next one。

Such a good book, the best one of the series so far。 The action gets closer to each one of the Rocinante's crew, each a broken vase, each getting some superglue to fix themselves and the others。 Such a good book, the best one of the series so far。 The action gets closer to each one of the Rocinante's crew, each a broken vase, each getting some superglue to fix themselves and the others。 。。。more

Sci-Fi Terrorists(26 March)tI’ve certainly mentioned this before, but watching the series before reading the book can be helpful in parts, but it can also sort of colour what is going on in the book。 In fact, it felt like there was a lot less going on in the book than there was in the series, but that is probably because in the series they expanded a lot of what was going on on Mars, as well as having something of a back story involving Bobbie (which I’m not sure was one of the short stories, or Sci-Fi Terrorists(26 March)tI’ve certainly mentioned this before, but watching the series before reading the book can be helpful in parts, but it can also sort of colour what is going on in the book。 In fact, it felt like there was a lot less going on in the book than there was in the series, but that is probably because in the series they expanded a lot of what was going on on Mars, as well as having something of a back story involving Bobbie (which I’m not sure was one of the short stories, or was added simply to pad out the series somewhat)。tAnyway, the Rocinante is in dry dock getting repaired, namely due to what happened in the previous book, and because it is going to take quite a bit of time, the crew decide to go their separate ways。 Alex heads to Mars to try to tie up some loose ends with his wife。 Amos heads back to Earth because he received a message that somebody that was important to him had died, and Naomi receives a message from her son, and decides to find him。 As for Holden, he decides that he wants to putter around the space station, and ends up being overcome by boredom。tSo, Holden and Alex, separately mind you, learn that there are ships disappearing。 Holden hears this from Monica, though she is more concerned regarding colony ships, while Alex picks up this information from Bobbie, though this has more to do with things going missing from Mars。 While they decide to while away the time investigating this mystery, it turns out that Earth, Mars, and the OPA are all attacked simultaneously。 With Earth, a couple of asteroids are basically dumped on the planet, while somebody attempts to assassinate the Prime Minister of Mars, and the head of the OPA (that being Fred Johnson)。tThe interesting thing is that there are some differences between what happened in the book, and what happens on the shows。 Then again, we are somewhat used to some of the things being different, namely because Carmina Drummer is raised to a much more important role, whereas in the books this is the first time we hear of her, and she is basically the head of security on Tycho Station。tThe idea that I originally heard is that the series explores a period where the people of the Solar System expand out to the universe, and the main thing here, which I believe is finished off in the next book, namely because of much of action here is the crew trying to get back together, is that a radical faction of the OPA has concerns that due to the new systems being discovered, that they will now become irrelevant。 In fact, due to them being conditioned to life outside of a gravity well, they are just too weak to be able to live down in the well。 The fear that is arising is that they will basically become disposable and forgotten people, so they have decided to act before it is too late。tMind you, a similar thing is happening on Mars, because the need to terraform the planet is just no longer necessary, and as such people are leaving for greener pastures。 As such, it has come across that Mars is literally becoming a ghost town, as people jump aboard colony ships and head off across the universe。 However, there is still this idea about the colony ships that have been disappearing as they pass through the ring gate, and this isn’t addressed in this book。 However, according to the television series, I suspect it is addressed then。 Mind you, I’m not all that surprised that it is something that exists in the background, considering everything else that is happening。 。。。more

Still enjoying these。 The plot of this book was probably my least favorite of the tv series, because I don’t like it when the crew is split up。 But that may be because it wasn’t explained well why they were split up, other than Naomi, and because none of them seemed much worried about each other。 The book did a much better job with that, so I ended up not minding it。 And I’m excited to be just about to where the tv series left off!(Also, it was such a random, minor detail, but Amos eating his fo Still enjoying these。 The plot of this book was probably my least favorite of the tv series, because I don’t like it when the crew is split up。 But that may be because it wasn’t explained well why they were split up, other than Naomi, and because none of them seemed much worried about each other。 The book did a much better job with that, so I ended up not minding it。 And I’m excited to be just about to where the tv series left off!(Also, it was such a random, minor detail, but Amos eating his food wrapper because he couldn’t find a trash can was about the most psychotic and most Amos thing that has happened in the series。) 。。。more

This was a great book。 The best in the series so far, in my opinion。 Big things happen in this book! This book was mostly really good。 The first few chapters, the initial setup was not as good。 Very rushed, very obvious that they were just trying to get all the pieces into place。 A smoother transition would have been better; spreading out the characters makes sense for the overall story and the story continues to be epic and excellent。 Five stars otherwise, but the setup for all of the different plotlines took long enough that I was annoyed about the abrupt, obvious setup for far too long。 A mo This book was mostly really good。 The first few chapters, the initial setup was not as good。 Very rushed, very obvious that they were just trying to get all the pieces into place。 A smoother transition would have been better; spreading out the characters makes sense for the overall story and the story continues to be epic and excellent。 Five stars otherwise, but the setup for all of the different plotlines took long enough that I was annoyed about the abrupt, obvious setup for far too long。 A most excellent installment for this series, moves the plot in a new direction and gives the overall series some real issues to tackle。I had been appreciating the Belter patois, trying to parse what came from what languages (and appreciating the fact that I knew enough Spanish, Japanese, and bits of others to mostly make sense of it)。 Of course, now that they're having more Belters involved in more of the story, a lot of the fun semi-comprehensible statements from the last book have pretty much disappeared and they're using much more straight English。 Not a problem, just a slight inconsistency and something I had been enjoying。 。。。more

Best in the series so far, really did a great job fleshing out every crew member and exploring their backgrounds in a fun, relevant way to the present plot。 No characters' story wasn't interesting to me, every cut away was met with another intriguing story rather than a disappointment, which is so easy to have happen when you're so invested in a specific character's arc。 Amos was still the favorite, and I've really liked the complexity that has built upon his character from book 1 to now, also v Best in the series so far, really did a great job fleshing out every crew member and exploring their backgrounds in a fun, relevant way to the present plot。 No characters' story wasn't interesting to me, every cut away was met with another intriguing story rather than a disappointment, which is so easy to have happen when you're so invested in a specific character's arc。 Amos was still the favorite, and I've really liked the complexity that has built upon his character from book 1 to now, also very glad to see him rough it alone with his lack of a proxy-conscience via the crew。 In fact his entire story with the tragedy that befalls Earth was a cool perspective on a particular apocalypse situation I hadn't expected。 Naomi's past was a curveball but defiently the most of a shocker, everyone elses were cool but her's was the actual "WHAT?!?" line。 It was well hinted at throughout the series without giving away enough that I was still able to have a genuine surprise feeling at the reveal。 Alex and Bobbi were cool to follow-up on。 Alex is another character with a little more complexity that I was expecting and his return to Mars did not disappoint。 The catastrophe and political machinations leading up to it were really solid world-building that made me want to play out this story in a game or something because the layers of complexity are just rife for exploration。 The alien elements really are only second to the geopolitical (I guess system-political) plots that unfold in this series。 9。5/10 。。。more

Wonderful storytelling! He took the entire Roci crew and split them up into four storylines。 Great depth on each of the crew's past and motivations。 In particular, Naomi's story will be of interest to women who have been in mentally abusive relationships。 Wonderful storytelling! Now it seems as though he's coming to his decisions more on his own and I'm not sure if I like it or not。Amos has been through some rough situations and although his moral compass is always pointing South, I feel like its vital to his character not to move past that trauma or to develop a sense of righteousness。We learn so much about the characters in this novel, but Naomi's development and backstory are by far my favourite。 She's exactly like the woman I aspire to be in terms of traits。 She's not only one of the best engineers in the solar system, but she's always so brave and calculating。 Even as a prisoner she's always looking out for her crew and trying to learn as much as she can to be as helpful as she can in any situation。 The crew is playing checkers and Naomi is always playing chess。Her back story fits so well with her character too。 Because of the world she grew up in this mindset was needed to survive。 And after every hit she takes she gets back up and she not only survives but she THRIVES。I love the way the author showed how Marcos manipulated Filip。 You can tell just by the word choice that it was something that Marcos had chanted over and over to get into Filip's head。 At first Filip says that "not everyone can be a soldier" and later in the book Marcos says "Not everyone has the strength to be a soldier。" I can just imagine Marcos telling Filip over and over again getting it ingrained in his head until Filip thinks its his own idea and his own thought。Apart from the character development the new worlds has opened up a need for new laws。 Whereas Earth was the only livable planet, that's not true anymore and the crew has to maneuver the drastic changes that are happing across the solar system。 We have rocks being dropped on planets, assassinations, stolen ships, betrayal and the list goes on。James is somehow able to convince me that I'm a member of the crew and that I'm a vital part of the crew's adventure。 The scenes are written so vividly it feels as thought I'm watching a movie at times and it's amazing。 It's rare that books do that for me。 I often wonder where things are positioned or how some characters look compared to others, but I've never had this issue。There's a part in the novel where someone records a video and it is shown to Holden。 As soon as person comes on the screen before Holden, he describes him as a older man with acne and wrinkles。 I know exactly the type of person that pops up on the screen and I'm not left wondering who is who and getting characters mixed up。I almost NEVER remember Characters names in the books I read no matter how long the series is。 I'm always snapping my fingers trying to recall them or I'll refer to them as "the guy with the dual swords" or whatever trait I can remember。 Not in the Expanse series。 I will just laugh and say "of course that what Amos did, that's so like him。"My husband started the series before me and I remember specifically reading Leviathan Wakes and getting frustrated with Holden's character。 I marched over to the living room to rant to my husband。 "The book was soo good, but now Holden and Miller characters are merging into one character! Usually I can tell what character is speaking just by the word choice and the response, but not Miller and Holden are acting the same!" He told me to just continue reading and shortly after that was Naomi's complaint about Holden as well! LOL!This is my favourite book in series so far and I recommend anyone who has made it this far in the series to continue to the end。 We are at the halfway point! Here is my ranking of the series。 Keep in mind I love each book and rated them all five stars, but this is the order of my most favourite to least favourite。1。 Nemesis Games2。 Leviathan Wakes3。 Caliban's War4。 Cibola Burn5。 Abaddon's GateQuote of the Book"Everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle。" 。。。more
