Summary

In case you’re wondering, this is not a love story。

My name is Tori Spring。 I like to sleep and I like to blog。 Last year – before all that stuff with Charlie and before I had to face the harsh realities of A-Levels and university applications and the fact that one day I really will have to start talking to people – I had friends。 Things were very different, I guess, but that’s all over now。

Now there’s Solitaire。 And Michael Holden。

I don’t know what Solitaire are trying to do, and I don’t care about Michael Holden。
I really don’t。

This incredible debut novel by outstanding young author Alice Oseman is perfect for fans of John Green, Rainbow Rowell and all unflinchingly honest writers。

Solitaire is a beautiful book, which was hard to read because it’s so sad yet so happy。 I loved it and I love Alice Oseman。

I really enjoyed this book and found it easy to read。 I liked the fact that sometimes there were no punctuation marks on long passages when Tori was thinking or talking in order to highlight the rush of her impulsive thoughts at her age。 This novel passes through multiple themes from teenagers' perspective (such as suicide, lgbt awareness, friendship, education, love), which I found very interesting。 The Mystery of solitaire was not 100% predictable to me。 There was good character development, a I really enjoyed this book and found it easy to read。 I liked the fact that sometimes there were no punctuation marks on long passages when Tori was thinking or talking in order to highlight the rush of her impulsive thoughts at her age。 This novel passes through multiple themes from teenagers' perspective (such as suicide, lgbt awareness, friendship, education, love), which I found very interesting。 The Mystery of solitaire was not 100% predictable to me。 There was good character development, although i think it could've been pushed a bit more for me to give it 5 stars。Overall this book got to my heart and did a good job of conveying emotions。 。。。more

。。。more

Really enjoyed this book。 Tori, in a lot of ways was very relatable。 Michael, was a loveable weirdo。 Nick and Charlie, adorable。 Parts of the plot made me think of Heathers (the musical) but with less murder!

I feel weird about this one。 I definitely liked this a lot, but I’m not sure that every thing was top quality, or always made the most sense。 Maybe that’s the point? I’m not sure。

This book。 This goddamn book。 THIS。 FUCKING。 BOOK。 So good! Very existential。 I liked how the end was like, not the end。 Like there were still a lot of unresolved things that didn't need to be fixed。 I loved how none of the characters were really good or bad, they were all in the middle。 This book was also kinda confusing but I really liked it。 Would 10/10 recommend。 This book。 This goddamn book。 THIS。 FUCKING。 BOOK。 So good! I adored this book。 It made me so sad and so happy。 I relate to Tori so much she is so full of self-hatred that she genuinely believes that she is not worthy of having friends and because of that pushes everyone away。 It’s so nice to see a good representation of how I was as a teenager。 I care about these characters so deeply that I had a panic attack when one of them was being attacked by a homophobe。 The book centres Tori Spring and her struggle with undiagnosed depression and inability to mai I adored this book。 It made me so sad and so happy。 I relate to Tori so much she is so full of self-hatred that she genuinely believes that she is not worthy of having friends and because of that pushes everyone away。 It’s so nice to see a good representation of how I was as a teenager。 I care about these characters so deeply that I had a panic attack when one of them was being attacked by a homophobe。 The book centres Tori Spring and her struggle with undiagnosed depression and inability to maintain relationships。 Love does happen but that’s a very minor side plot so I definitely would not label this as a love story。 TRIGGER/CONTENT WARNINGS:- Self Harm- Eating Disorder- References to Suicide- Suicidal Ideation- Depression- Obsessive Compulsive Behaviours- Homophobia- Violence- Fire 。。。more

The fact that Alice Oseman wrote and published this book at the age of 17 is freakin' incredible。It's darker than the rest of the Osemanverse, but it still FEELS like an Osemanverse book。(I have no idea if that statement makes any sense, I have no idea if I make any sense, completing this book has left my brain in a funk and I am currently questioning my entire existence and the existence of all humanity。。。 Thank you for that Alice。)This book made me feel things。 That is all I am capable of sayi The fact that Alice Oseman wrote and published this book at the age of 17 is freakin' incredible。It's darker than the rest of the Osemanverse, but it still FEELS like an Osemanverse book。(I have no idea if that statement makes any sense, I have no idea if I make any sense, completing this book has left my brain in a funk and I am currently questioning my entire existence and the existence of all humanity。。。 Thank you for that Alice。)This book made me feel things。 That is all I am capable of saying right now。 。。。more

3。5 stars because I wasn’t a massive fan of the actual solitaire plot。 A lot of the lower star reviews complain about the characters in this book, especially Tori herself, but I honestly found them all pretty realistic。 I could see little bits of myself and my sixth form friends in all of them。 If it hadn’t been for the solitaire plot I could easily have convinced myself that I was reading a book set at my college about me and people I knew, and if that means that I have to admit that I was an a 3。5 stars because I wasn’t a massive fan of the actual solitaire plot。 A lot of the lower star reviews complain about the characters in this book, especially Tori herself, but I honestly found them all pretty realistic。 I could see little bits of myself and my sixth form friends in all of them。 If it hadn’t been for the solitaire plot I could easily have convinced myself that I was reading a book set at my college about me and people I knew, and if that means that I have to admit that I was an angsty little arsehole sometimes when I was 17 then so be it。 I don’t think I know a single person who wasn’t。I have suffered with depression, anxiety and disordered eating for over a decade and honestly? I liked reading about a character with depression fucking up, being mean and ruining friendships, because that actually happens sometimes。 I liked reading about a character who genuinely sucked sometimes, because I think that we all genuinely suck sometimes。 These are probably some of the most real-feeling characters I’ve read in a while because they were flawed in ways that I have been or can see myself being flawed。 Regarding the solitaire plot, I guessed who started it all as soon as they were introduced。 It felt like a storyline that was included just to have something big and dramatic happen at the end, and I was way more invested in the characters then I was the plot。 If there had been a bit more investigating, a few more misleads as to who solitaire was, this would have been a solid 4 stars instead of 3。5。 Overall, I am a fan of Oseman’s writing and her characters, and I am greatly looking forward to reading the rest of her books。 。。。more
