Summary

What If It's Us meets Life as We Knew It in this postapocalyptic, queer YA adventure romance from debut author Erik J。 Brown。 Perfect for fans of Adam Silvera and Alex London。

When Andrew stumbles upon Jamie's house, he's injured, starved, and has nothing left to lose。 A deadly pathogen has killed off most of the world's population, including everyone both boys have ever loved。 And if this new world has taught them anything, it's to be scared of what other desperate people will do 。 。 。 so why does it seem so easy for them to trust each other?

After danger breaches their shelter, they flee south in search of civilization。 But something isn't adding up about Andrew's story, and it could cost them everything。 And Jamie has a secret, too。 He's starting to feel something more than friendship for Andrew, adding another layer of fear and confusion to an already tumultuous journey。

The road ahead of them is long, and to survive, they'll have to shed their secrets, face the consequences of their actions, and find the courage to fight for the future they desire, together。 Only one thing feels certain: all that's left in their world is the undeniable pull they have toward each other。

This was very good and omg the suspense it truly is a good post apocalyptic book。 Yay for a queer post apocalyptic book。 “Have hope, be safe, and help keep others safe。”

Freaking amazing and it is definitely one of my favorites now。 The author’s note is also super insightful and amazing。

A queer post-apocalypse story? Sign me up! This genre is sorely lacking in LGBTQ+ rep and Erik J。 Brown delivered beautifully! I’m speechless。 I absolutely loved this book! I was hooked right from the start。I am so happy to see queer representation in this book because unfortunately not many books have queer characters nowadays 。 And it was so nice to see it play out in a dystopian type of book。 It was very refreshing。 I absolutely love the combination。 ✨A bit of gay+dystopia=paradise。✨I found myself smiling like a fool while reading the cute scenes between Andrew and Jamie。 They were so sweet。 And i love how “up to dat I’m speechless。 I absolutely loved this book! Trigger warnings: death of a parent (in the past), death of a sibling (in the past), mass death, pandemic, medical content, gun violence, serious physical injury, violence, homophobia, racism, vomit, murder, death。 Oh, I loved this。 I was kind of hesitant going in purely because it's two boys who meet in the aftermath of a pandemic that's killed 90% of the planet and, like, 😬But thankfully, this was precious and pure and wonderful。 The dynamic between Andrew and Jamie was lovely。 I enjoyed the j Trigger warnings: death of a parent (in the past), death of a sibling (in the past), mass death, pandemic, medical content, gun violence, serious physical injury, violence, homophobia, racism, vomit, murder, death。 Oh, I loved this。 I was kind of hesitant going in purely because it's two boys who meet in the aftermath of a pandemic that's killed 90% of the planet and, like, 😬But thankfully, this was precious and pure and wonderful。 The dynamic between Andrew and Jamie was lovely。 I enjoyed the journey and the difficulties they encountered along the way, and I really enjoyed seeing all the people they encounter along the way and the interactions they have with those people。 It gave me John Wyndham's Day of the Triffid vibes, but with bird flu instead of triffids。 There was plenty of emotion and I really enjoyed the discussion of difficult choices that have to be made in order to survive。 All in all? An absolute delight。 。。。more

LITERALLY WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT ??? 3。 the characters were so under-developed that, at the end of the book in the epilogue where we don't know who's narrating, i genuinely think it could be either jamie or andrew doing it! but i don't know who actually is! they don't have a voice and their personalities were staler than unsalted crackers。 4。 it fell into the tell and not show, hard。 5。 i'm 98% sure something would happen to the worldwide ecosystem if birds just。 stopped existing altogether。 6。 did not mention how latinoamérica dealt with the superflu at all? or asia? or africa? suddenly, the world is only USA and EU。 and i think that's it? other than that, there's just smaller issues that branch out from there。 like the main romance feeling flat, the confession at least。 nothing to swoon over, in my opinion。 but that's just because i didn't really get to fall in love with the mc's at all。 also i'm still shook by the homophobic, racist, misogynistic, and ableist society that somehow survived the superflu。 like, really? way to go for queer conflict in fiction 😐nevertheless, this was a debut novel and it's YA so maybe i would've enjoyed it more if i'd read this when i was 14, not 18。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book! This was another book that I've recently read that has briefly mentioned the pandemic and I'm really curious now to see what other books mention it。 I loved the slow burn between these two characters and how their love for each other grew over time。 They went through so much together and honestly, it was never a dull moment。 There was one particular moment that had me anxious for their safety, but it was nonstop action。 I almost wish that this was part of a series so I really enjoyed this book! Really really enjoyed this。 I loved Andrew and jamie's relationship (especially with how Jamie was so willing to go along with Andrew from the start), I loved that there wasn't a lot of relationship drama between the two of them since everything else provided enough conflict。 It was just a great book。 I think there were a bit too many pop culture references near the start for my tastes, but those taper out eventually, and I almost wish it was longer since the book takes place over a good span of Really really enjoyed this。 I loved Andrew and jamie's relationship (especially with how Jamie was so willing to go along with Andrew from the start), I loved that there wasn't a lot of relationship drama between the two of them since everything else provided enough conflict。 It was just a great book。 I think there were a bit too many pop culture references near the start for my tastes, but those taper out eventually, and I almost wish it was longer since the book takes place over a good span of time but goes by pretty fast, and I guess I just wanted to spend more time with these two。 But I loved it all the same。 。。。more

I pulled this out of my TBR shelf three times and put it aside for different reads without even starting it。 I wish I hadn’t, because it was a good read。 A quick read for me and very comforting as well。 I went in with the expectations of a zombie book and was pleasantely surprised that it wasn’t。 Don’t get me wrong, I like a good zombie apocalypse, but this was even better because it was more realistic。 It being the next virus after Covid made it very real and little mentions like “we wiped down I pulled this out of my TBR shelf three times and put it aside for different reads without even starting it。 I wish I hadn’t, because it was a good read。 A quick read for me and very comforting as well。 I went in with the expectations of a zombie book and was pleasantely surprised that it wasn’t。 Don’t get me wrong, I like a good zombie apocalypse, but this was even better because it was more realistic。 It being the next virus after Covid made it very real and little mentions like “we wiped down our groceries” or the talk of lockdowns and quarantines really hit home。Andrew & Jamie are both relatable characters in their own ways and act age-appropriate。 The book didn’t necessarily produce a lot of feelings for me, but it was still sweet and I was rooting for them the whole time。 The time skips are nice and again, add realism。 This book draws out over months: Injuries have an appropriate healing time, travel times are included, etc。 All makes sense。 Only reason it’s 4 stars and not 5 is because it didn’t hit me in the feels or has the big wow-factor other books I’ve recently read had。 There aren’t any big plot twists。 It’s a simple survival story & a good comfort read for inbetween! 。。。more

I really really loved this book and I appreciate the queer representation as well as the bouncing perspectives。 No internalized homophobia thank god I’m so sick of that trope。 But two teens finding hope in a global pandemic that lead to a post apocalyptic society?? Just- Just read it The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was because it was definitely teen fiction

Audiobook ThoughtsThis audiobook has two narrators, one for Andrew and one for Jamie and I always appreciate dual narrator audiobooks。 I thought this was a great listen and would recommend! Recommend?I want to remind everyone again that in my eyes, 3 stars is a good rating! I loved this book。 It was a post apocalyptic story with hope and a sense of humor。 I have never read anything post apocalyptic that didn’t bring me down before this。 It was believable and surprising。 There were lots of exciting parts to keep the pages turning, as well as a tender love story that helped us to identify with the characters and to root for them。 I’m so glad to see a book for LGBTQ teens! Beautiful work Erik J。 Brown! I can’t wait until I get to read another Erik J。 Brown novel!!!

Overall I enjoyed reading this story。 There wasn't really an over-arching plot just lots of smaller "quests" that Jamie and Andrew went on。 A lot of the predicaments the two got into seemed to be fixed too easily。 The 6 week time jump after Jamie helps Andrew in the beginning was a little jarring and I would have liked to see them getting to know each other more so that we can see their crushes on one another develop more。 Other than that I liked the book。 Both Jamie and Andrew had distinct narr Overall I enjoyed reading this story。 There wasn't really an over-arching plot just lots of smaller "quests" that Jamie and Andrew went on。 A lot of the predicaments the two got into seemed to be fixed too easily。 The 6 week time jump after Jamie helps Andrew in the beginning was a little jarring and I would have liked to see them getting to know each other more so that we can see their crushes on one another develop more。 Other than that I liked the book。 Both Jamie and Andrew had distinct narrative voices that made me like the characters。 。。。more

Thank you so much, Edelweiss and the publisher for the chance to read and review this book。All that's left in the world is a brilliant dystopian novel about two teenagers who find one other in a post-apocalyptic world。 Told by Andrew's and Jamie's POV, the reader follows them in a world filled with dangers and difficult choices, embarking in a journey to repent and, on the other side, to repay a kindness。 Without zombies, it reminded me of The walking dead, set in bleak scenario, perilous journe Thank you so much, Edelweiss and the publisher for the chance to read and review this book。All that's left in the world is a brilliant dystopian novel about two teenagers who find one other in a post-apocalyptic world。 Told by Andrew's and Jamie's POV, the reader follows them in a world filled with dangers and difficult choices, embarking in a journey to repent and, on the other side, to repay a kindness。 Without zombies, it reminded me of The walking dead, set in bleak scenario, perilous journey, looking for food and safe shelter, meeting people and communities that could be harmful and dangerous。All that's left in the world gives a conversation about racism, sexism and ableism, showing how tragedies could bring both the worst and the best of people, how there will be some trying to adhere to moral codes and rules and those who would disregard them in order to built their own world with their set of rules。In a very realistic representation of what could happen in a post-apocalyptic world, Andrew and Jamie struggle with mental health and PTSD, with forced choices and their consequences, with trusting the wrong and the right people and, in the end, with realizing they are always there for each other。They find one other and hope in this world where people fight for survival。I loved reading this book, I basically devoured it。 Both grim and sad, filled with love and hope and focusing on two teenagers, who lost their loved ones, forced to face the world in order to survive。 There's queer rep, slow burn romance (veeeeery slow burn), pop culture references, this coming of age is realistic, brilliant, moving, made me laugh out loud, hope and love。 。。。more

Enjoyed the dialogue, world building and characters connecting。 Considering its set in a future post apocalypse type thing, this COULD have been a timeless book。 But honestly it's disappointingly dating itself already now, and will be very dated 5,10 years in the future for new readers。Copious mentions of current popular celebrities like Tom Holland, memes "insert Paul Rudd Look At Us GIF" 。。。 Internet culture dates the fastest, it was jarring and unnecessary to include。 The book would have been Enjoyed the dialogue, world building and characters connecting。 Considering its set in a future post apocalypse type thing, this COULD have been a timeless book。 But honestly it's disappointingly dating itself already now, and will be very dated 5,10 years in the future for new readers。Copious mentions of current popular celebrities like Tom Holland, memes "insert Paul Rudd Look At Us GIF" 。。。 Internet culture dates the fastest, it was jarring and unnecessary to include。 The book would have been stronger and more accessible to current and future readers without that。Additionally maybe I'm just not ready to read about Covid as a past event when we're still living it?
