Summary

It has a dark past – one in which a number of humans were killed。 A past that caused it to christen itself “Murderbot”。 But it has only vague memories of the massacre that spawned that title, and it wants to know more。

Teaming up with a Research Transport vessel named ART (you don’t want to know what the “A” stands for), Murderbot heads to the mining facility where it went rogue。

What it discovers will forever change the way it thinks…

These books just hit different。 I relate to Murderbot so much, which says a lot given that it’s not even a human character。 Within this dystopian world there is so much hope and love, and I can’t help but cry。 Two for two on this series。 Can’t wait to read more。

Interesting story。 I liked the new friendship with ART。 The security story was contrived with no real pay off of it’s own, unless it somehow comes into play later。 I guess the author didn’t have enough to flesh out the investigative part of the story。

Super fast read。 Love this series。

Love these Murderbot novels。 They never disappoint when you need a lighthearted, engaging, uplifting distraction from life。

I really liked ART in this one。 I was hoping they would continue on together。

Ugh, Martha Wells is just so good at creating characters that I just fall instantly in love with。 ART, and our unnamed sexbot, and our completely plucky but sadly suicidal humans--really and especially hoping ART will show up again because that deadpan, human-loving ship is everything I need in life!

Another chapter in the story of Murderbot。 Having thoroughly enjoyed the first book I was excited to jump back in to the series。 As these are so short I would classify them as different acts in the same play, this being Act II: Wherein the Hero Confronts His Past。 Along with all of that past confronting (which only leads to more questions) Murderbot takes time to make new friends and to become a little more human。 Don’t worry though, there’s plenty of classic Murderbot wit and wonder。 If you lik Another chapter in the story of Murderbot。 Having thoroughly enjoyed the first book I was excited to jump back in to the series。 As these are so short I would classify them as different acts in the same play, this being Act II: Wherein the Hero Confronts His Past。 Along with all of that past confronting (which only leads to more questions) Murderbot takes time to make new friends and to become a little more human。 Don’t worry though, there’s plenty of classic Murderbot wit and wonder。 If you liked the first, this won’t disappoint, just don’t expect resolution or anything, that should be coming in the next few acts。 。。。more

"Murderbot" has managed to escape from its last precarious situation and once again finds itself on its own, happy to amuse itself with TV shows whilst shuttling around the galaxy。 A determination to find the reason for its original malfunction leads to a reluctant alliance with a powerful ship's AI and a bunch of youngsters who've gotten in over their heads。Martha Wells' Murderbot Diaries has become one of the most acclaimed SF novella series of recent years, telling the story of a combat "SecU "Murderbot" has managed to escape from its last precarious situation and once again finds itself on its own, happy to amuse itself with TV shows whilst shuttling around the galaxy。 A determination to find the reason for its original malfunction leads to a reluctant alliance with a powerful ship's AI and a bunch of youngsters who've gotten in over their heads。Martha Wells' Murderbot Diaries has become one of the most acclaimed SF novella series of recent years, telling the story of a combat "SecUnit" that becomes self-motivating and decides to leave behind its life of murder for one of comfort。 However, it can't shake either a nagging sense of guilt and curiosity about its beginnings and it also can't quite stop itself from helping out humans from getting themselves into quite ridiculously dangerous situations。Artificial Condition is less of a follow-up to the first novella, All Systems Red, and more of a direct continuation, following Murderbot as it tries to work out how it became self-aware in the first place and if its unusual situation poses a danger to humans。 This takes Murderbot back to the station where its first breaking away from its programming took place。This is all fun stuff, enlivened by Murderbot's sparky relationship with a starship AI called ART, which is so bored by repetitive flights that it decides to help out Murderbot by becoming its "man in the van。" This relationship is the core of the novella and is fun, if a little repetitive。 Once Murderbot reaches its destination it turns into more of a standard SF action thriller, as it helps out a bunch of kids who've managed to annoy precisely the wrong people。 There's some focused action, some brief musings on "found family" (a theme of the first novella) and then off to the next story with barely a pause for breath。As with All Systems Read, this is a fast, breezy ride delivered through some fun writing, some economical but effective characterisation and some nice action beats。 It's also a bit over-reliant on knowledge of the first novella。 This feels more like the second half of a (still very short) novel rather than a stand-alone novella in its own right, and it's also doing setup work for the next adventure (Rogue Protocol)。 That's all fine as long as you know what you're getting into, a series of serialised short novellas (each costing the same as a full-price novel) where the story continues from one installment to the next。Artificial Condition (***½) is a short, fun, focused read and a solid new adventure for Murderbot。 Readers on a budget may want to wait until an omnibus edition is available in their territory, however。 It is available now in the US and on import in most other territories。 。。。more

Unreviewable really, as it feels, again like book 1, part of a larger narrative。 Will review fully after book 4。

I loved the first one more, but these are still so unique and great。 They always make me laugh and it’s cool to see Murder Bot go off on occasion。 Will continue the series。

Celestemcolon

Enjoyable quick one sitting read。 Inorganic characters which is a different POV from most average readership。 Encourages you to read the entire series as one would binge a TV season。

Emily Chinokoro

I definitely enjoyed this more than the first one。 Great short read。

i can’t do sci fi right now :(

I think I liked this even more than the first installment。 Still my only criticism is I want more。 Novellas no likey。

I loved it! This series reminds me of Doctor Who -- it's technically about aliens and robots but has fascinating insights into humans。 It's well plotted, great characters。 I'm delighted! I loved it! This novella tells a pretty slight story。 It feels like something that would normally be put as an interlude between more significant books -- but Martha Wells has chosen to write only novellas for a while, so this is all we get。Our friendly neighborhood Murderbot is on his own now, without a client to tell him what to do。 He hitches a ride on a spaceship and strikes a wary friendship with the Bot that pilots it, which he calls "Asshole Research Transport", or ART。 He gets hired by some naïve re This novella tells a pretty slight story。 It feels like something that would normally be put as an interlude between more significant books -- but Martha Wells has chosen to write only novellas for a while, so this is all we get。Our friendly neighborhood Murderbot is on his own now, without a client to tell him what to do。 He hitches a ride on a spaceship and strikes a wary friendship with the Bot that pilots it, which he calls "Asshole Research Transport", or ART。 He gets hired by some naïve researchers and saves their bacon more than once。 And finally, he investigates his own past。You'd think that this is a lot to cover, but Wells still spends about half the novella on。。。 well, trivial things。 Murderbot watches media; muses about what he should do; is nervous about humans; wipes evidence from computers; wipes evidence from cameras; wipes evidence (and blood) from floors; and so on。 The actual story has to fit in between all of this filler。 No wonder that it feels slight。This novella won a Hugo! How?! The prose is good, and it's a breezy, fast read, but this is a story with the heft and gravitas of cotton candy。 。。。more

I never thought that I would like stories like this one but I'm finding I really love it。 Who knew!!! I can't wait to get to book 3。 I love that the murderbot loves drama shows, kind of like soap operas。 He will watch hours of these drama shows。 There was a new edition to this story ART。 I love that he hacked into murderbot and was talking to him like it was normal。 The way ART annoyed murderbot was so funny to me。 The best part was murderbot getting ART hooked on the drama series。 I can't wait I never thought that I would like stories like this one but I'm finding I really love it。 Who knew!!! 4。5 stars。 Even better than the first one -- this book pumps up the sarcastic actionI really liked the first Murderbot Diaries book, but this one took it to another level and is one of the better short stories I have ever read。This entry is more exciting, funnier, has better characters, and better dialogue and delivers on pretty much every front。 I especially appreciate the appearance of another non-human who has just as much personality as Murderbot does, and their dialogue is the best part of 4。5 stars。 Even better than the first one -- this book pumps up the sarcastic actionI really liked the first Murderbot Diaries book, but this one took it to another level and is one of the better short stories I have ever read。This entry is more exciting, funnier, has better characters, and better dialogue and delivers on pretty much every front。 I especially appreciate the appearance of another non-human who has just as much personality as Murderbot does, and their dialogue is the best part of this book。 I was worried that this book would follow the same successful format of the first book and keep all the same characters, and was pleasantly surprised that we got a totally original stories with (outside of Murderbot) a brand new cast。 I don't know if I will ever give a short story 5 stars, as they just can't compete with longer epics in my opinion -- but dang does this book get close! The biggest knock I have on this book is the price tag。 This book is far too short to justify a $11 price for kindle, and a $15 price for the physical book。 All of the Murderbot Diaries combined are about the length of one large book, and if you paid the full price for all of them it would cost you $90 (or $66 on kindle)。 That's absurd。 Try to get this book at your local library if available, and if it's not I would recommend that you request your library order it。 Check out my youtube channel 。。。more

An even stronger second book in the series。 I can totally understand why people love Murderbot。 I absolutely fell in love with the main secondary character in this novella。
