Summary

To all the world, Alizeh is a disposable servant, not the long-lost heir to an ancient Jinn kingdom forced to hide in plain sight。

The crown prince, Kamran, has heard the prophecies foretelling the death of his king。 But he could never have imagined that the servant girl with the strange eyes, the girl he can’t put out of his mind, would one day soon uproot his kingdom—and the world。

Clashing empires, forbidden romance, and a long-forgotten queen destined to save her people—bestselling author Tahereh Mafi’s first in an epic, romantic trilogy inspired by Persian mythology。

Absolutely fantastic!! It's been a while since I've devoured a book as fast as this one and I cant wait for the next one! The writing is seriously gorgeous and I was immediately hooked by the second chapter。 I usually take my time to get through a book, putting it down for a while then coming back, but this book would not leave my hands。 My mind。 My dreams。 I was enchanted! My heart was moved。 My brain was thinking。 I loved every second of it!! Absolutely fantastic!! It's been a while since I've devoured a book as fast as this one and I cant wait for the next one! I loved the character development and the world。 Really engaging writing。 I wish the book had more resolution。 It’s fine to leave some things hanging to nod to the next book, but this was a lot。 I’d recommend reading closer to 2023 and the release of the second book。

Really liked this fantasy from a new (to me) author。 There was aspects of mythology, and magic, and some fun surprises that kept me interested。 Definitely a good read。

2。3 starsI was going to mention how I hated how this book is marketed as an enemies-to-lovers when in reality, it's more of a boring love at first sight kinda deal。。。 until we met MY MAN at the very end。 So 1。8/5 stars for the beginning and 2。8 for the last few chapters just for that one character。Longer review coming shortly 2。3 starsI was going to mention how I hated how this book is marketed as an enemies-to-lovers when in reality, it's more of a boring love at first sight kinda deal。。。 until we met MY MAN at the very end。 So 1。8/5 stars for the beginning and 2。8 for the last few chapters just for that one character。Longer review coming shortly 。。。more

The ultimate forbidden romance, very pacy and easy to read。 It could have been longer and incorporated whatever will be in the next book so bulk it out。

I think some of the flow-y writing could’ve been cut for more plot and characterization。 It was a bit slow and not much happens until later in the book。 I’m really excited to see Alizeh and her jinn powers in the next book however, what little we saw was awesome and I want more。 I think there will be more action in book 2 based on how this one ended - warning - in a cliffhanger!

SO GOOD OMG!!Amazing writing, as always with Tahereh Mafi。 And I loved seeing it at work in a fantasy setting。And what a fantasy setting!!! Simply perfect, this whole book was perfect。 Amazing characters, gripping plot and the right amount of mystery and plot twists。YES TO THAT!

Alizeh is a servant trying to survive - she sews to make a living, in addition to working as a household servant。 She's also a Jinn - in a world where Jinn are discriminated against under the pretext of equality。One day she attracts the attention of the prince, who is sure that she's a spy from a rival human kingdom。 The prince's grandfather has (view spoiler)[vowed to kill her because of a prophecy。 The prince objects because。。。 well。。。 he thinks she's harmless and there's a mix of pity there。 Alizeh is a servant trying to survive - she sews to make a living, in addition to working as a household servant。 She's also a Jinn - in a world where Jinn are discriminated against under the pretext of equality。One day she attracts the attention of the prince, who is sure that she's a spy from a rival human kingdom。 The prince's grandfather has (view spoiler)[vowed to kill her because of a prophecy。 The prince objects because。。。 well。。。 he thinks she's harmless and there's a mix of pity there。 Also, romance reasons。We end with finding out that Alizeh was actually born to be queen (she has ice in her veins - so she's the next Jinn queen - and she's kidnapped by the rival kingdom's king (Cyrus) to become his queen。 This is apparently part of the devil's whim。 (hide spoiler)]I'm not very keen on this because the characters seem to react rather than act。 I wasn't sold on the romance either。 2/5 stars 。。。more

First off, the art at the start of each chapter is lovely。 I loved the chapter numbers written in Persian。 Mafi's writing was lyrical, the language flowed and I liked the way she described the surroundings, everything just sounded so beautiful。 The causal interactions of the people in the surrounding environment was nice too。 I was pleasantly surprised by the mention of haleem (yum)。 Alizeh is smart, resourceful and so compassionate。 She's been through a lot of pain but she doesn't let it bog he First off, the art at the start of each chapter is lovely。 I loved the chapter numbers written in Persian。 Mafi's writing was lyrical, the language flowed and I liked the way she described the surroundings, everything just sounded so beautiful。 The causal interactions of the people in the surrounding environment was nice too。 I was pleasantly surprised by the mention of haleem (yum)。 Alizeh is smart, resourceful and so compassionate。 She's been through a lot of pain but she doesn't let it bog her down。 She just wants some peace。 Kamran is quite the dramatic Prince which is pretty funny。 He's also amost always angry which just makes him more dramatic。 Alizeh and Kamran's love story was too fast, it felt like Kamran was suspecting her one second and the next he was madly in love with her。 The only time I felt anything for them was at this line, "In all these years, he'd been the only one。" but even that was just a flicker of emotion。 In terms of the plot, I don't feel like much happened。 At first, the chapter endings had me intrigued but then I started losing interest and I just wanted to finish the book to get it over with。 It only picked up in the last 50 pages of the book and I liked the reveal of the riddle。 Hazan and Kamran have some funny interactions and I was more interested in Hazan's backstory。 Omid and Alizeh also had some nice interactions。 I'm not too entirely sure how I feel about Deen。Overall, I was disappointed because I was really looking forward to this book but I didn't really end up enjoy it。 It would probably be a 2。5 but I bumped it up to a 3 because of the last 50 pages and the mention of haleem。 Some quotes I liked:"embroidering the tapestry of her life with ominous forebodings, in what seemed a promise of destruction she could not outmaneuver。"“Begging your pardon, sire, but I didn’t know you were acquainted with all the servants in the royal city。”"When a person is in tremendous pain, sir, is not its remedy worth everything? Valued above all else?”"Perhaps you and I are the same age, aunt, for I fear I may be falling apart, too。”“You need not worry,” Hazan said。 “She’s gone。”“Gone?” The prince frowned。 “But— Were not we the ones who were meant to leave the dressing room? Was she not meant to stay here to finish the work she’d started?” 。。。more

actual rating: 3。5/5a bit too slow paced for me, I felt like not much happened for the majority of the book :/ did enjoy the romance - it was very cute - and the last few chapters were interesting but overall this didn’t live up to my expectations :(

This was my first time reading a book by the amazing Tarehi Mafi, her style of writing was unique, interesting, and has me wanting to read more about the wonderful world she created in, “This Woven Kingdom”。Before reading this book, I had heard bits and pieces that went along the lines of “Romeo and Juliet” vibes, royals, adventure, and perhaps dagger to the throat moment。 I was fascinated with Alizeh and Kamran, both characters were unlike characters I had read before。 Alizeh was a strong chara This was my first time reading a book by the amazing Tarehi Mafi, her style of writing was unique, interesting, and has me wanting to read more about the wonderful world she created in, “This Woven Kingdom”。Before reading this book, I had heard bits and pieces that went along the lines of “Romeo and Juliet” vibes, royals, adventure, and perhaps dagger to the throat moment。 I was fascinated with Alizeh and Kamran, both characters were unlike characters I had read before。 Alizeh was a strong character, she possessed such admirable determination that despite dealing with a lot, she was able to persevere through it all。 Especially considering the strength and power that Alizeh had within her, she could have easily resorted to it, but instead she was careful and mindful of her circumstances。 Alizeh was capable and intelligent, and often times relied on her own skills in order to survive in the world of Ardunia。 While Alizeh was trying to survive and had her own obstacles to overcome, there was also Kamran。 Kamran was the definition of, serious, grumpy(to me at least), reserved, strong, and intelligent。 For the longest time, Kamran was always focused on being a solider, being a leader among the armies that he led, so for him coming back home to Ardunia was an adjustment for him。 Kamran wasn’t someone who could easily brush off things, he always listened to his instincts, and they were never wrong until… he crossed paths with Alizeh。 If you think about it, if Kamran hadn’t been around the time that Alizeh managed to protect herself from being attacked, he would have never known about her, but that single moment changed both Alizeh and Kamran’s lives forever。 I found it really intriguing to read how Kamran was so curious and fascinated by Alizeh like, the grumpy guy who usually threatened to horsewhip his minister a。k。a。 his friend, Hazan was suddenly soft spoken, gentle, and mindful of his behavior around Alizeh。 You could tell that Kamran was conflicted about his feelings regarding Alizeh because while he was awed by her beauty and skills, he also had to consider the prophecy his grandfather spoke of。 Likewise, Alizeh was not sure about Kamran, the mere sight of him triggered memories of what the Devil showed her (the vision of Kamran)。 Alizeh was careful around Kamran due to her fear of getting caught, arrested by the magistrates, but she also couldn’t help feeling some type of way around him。 I will say, I found the beginning to be a little slow, but only because there was certain information that needed to be explained which, would later prove vitals to the plot。 I feel like once I read that there would be a ball, I got really excited and was looking forward to that part of the book。 Let’s just say, the scene with the ball was both eye opening and had lots of big reveals I didn’t see coming。 Normally, you would think a ball would involve a romantic dance between the main characters and some witty banter, but no, in Alizeh and Kamran’s case, there was murder, deception, plot twist, and big revelations。 Towards the very end, I was surprised and intrigued by what ended up happening。 The way the book ended was very much a cliffhanger, and a part of me was like, “Noooooo I NEED TO KNOW MORE!” But it’s ok… for now… I guess。 I enjoyed the ending and with all the drama that occurred, I was loving it。 Although now I’m curious to see what will happen to Alizeh in terms of her fate, and with that truth bomb Cyrus dropped on her at the very ending, Alizeh wasn’t the only one who was shocked。Overall, I enjoyed the story, the world building was fascinating。 Alizeh was such a unique character that kept me intrigued and I admired her resilience and determination, as well as her strength。 I kinda liked Kamran’s serious attitude, but also how he was utterly captivated by Alizeh, came off kind of insta-love but I thought it was sweet that way Kamran was so affected by Alizeh’s presence *me swooning。 If you love fantasy, unique world building, action, adventure, and romance, this is a great book to read。 。。。more

I thoroughly enjoyed the first 3/4 of this novel。 I loved all of the characters, the setting was absolutely beautiful, and the plot was increasingly entertaining as the book continued。 Personally, didn’t like the ending。 It feels as if once we got to the end of the book a completely different author was writing it。 Our main protagonist COMPLETELY changed。 Her speech and personality just seemed too different。 She was almost too lively, which sounds like a great thing for our character, but the ch I thoroughly enjoyed the first 3/4 of this novel。 I loved all of the characters, the setting was absolutely beautiful, and the plot was increasingly entertaining as the book continued。 Personally, didn’t like the ending。 It feels as if once we got to the end of the book a completely different author was writing it。 Our main protagonist COMPLETELY changed。 Her speech and personality just seemed too different。 She was almost too lively, which sounds like a great thing for our character, but the change came out of nowhere。 The relationship between Kamran and Alizeh was really cute from beginning to roughly 3/4ths the way through was basically perfect, but everything that happened at the very end just seemed a tad bit ridiculous。 The twist was very interesting, I just think it was poorly executed。 The book is already quite long, maybe too long I would argue, but why not give a couple more chapters to really make the end just as fluently written as the rest of the novel? 3/5 stars because the writing, for the most part, was beautiful。 I loved Alizeh’s character and the relationship between her and Omid。 All in all, it was a decent read。 。。。more

3。5 This book felt all too short and ended on a cliffhanger that has me invested in reading the next one (even though it’s gonna be a while before it’s released)。 It’s giving shatter me flashbacks。I gave it a 3。5 not even because this book is necessarily better than the average book I read, but the possibility it leaves at the end for the next book has me excited。

There was so much screaming and confusion and death and a dragon??? what??? It's shame because I was enjoying this book a lot, I loved the dialogue, i liked the characters and the world building。 I felt like there was such a build up only to lead to a very confusing ending。 Hence the -1。2 pointsAs for the characters, I literally realized 75% in that this entire story happened during 3。8⭐️Okay so this was a solid story until the very end。。。I couldn't comprehend a single thing that was happening?? Will it be Cyrus? Why deprive me of a broody dark haired love interest??? I want answers!!! Technically, Cyrus being the love interest would truly make this an enemies to lovers, since she now despises him, while Kamran was barely an enemy, if at all。 But I liked Kamran :/ is she going to pull a "Shatter Me" and make us fall for the villain yet again? Guess we'll have to continue reading and find out。。。Anyway, this was an overall very good YA Fantasy, if you liked the worlds of The Wrath & The Dawn or We Hunt The Flame, you'll love this one as well。 。。。more

THIS BOOK WAS TOO GOOD!!usually fantasy scares me because it takes forever to get into, but i was hooked quick。 the world building was seamless, and not boring to read。 the characters were so good。 finally a ya female protagonist that isn’t the typical “i’m not like other girls…i’m strong”。 i love how the prince is so dramatic, moody and such a typical emo teenager everyone just accepts it and makes fun of him。 i laughed more than i should have。 beautiful writing as expected。 very much pride and THIS BOOK WAS TOO GOOD!!usually fantasy scares me because it takes forever to get into, but i was hooked quick。 the world building was seamless, and not boring to read。 the characters were so good。 finally a ya female protagonist that isn’t the typical “i’m not like other girls…i’m strong”。 i love how the prince is so dramatic, moody and such a typical emo teenager everyone just accepts it and makes fun of him。 i laughed more than i should have。 beautiful writing as expected。 very much pride and prejudice vibes w the romance。 i mean…tahereh mafi wrote a fantasy book, of course it would be good。 。。。more
