Summary

In the vein of Naomi Novik’s New York Times bestseller Spinning Silver and Katherine Arden’s national bestseller The Bear and the Nightingale, this unforgettable debut— inspired by Hungarian history and Jewish mythology—follows a young pagan woman with hidden powers and a one-eyed captain of the Woodsmen as they form an unlikely alliance to thwart a tyrant。

In her forest-veiled pagan village, Évike is the only woman without power, making her an outcast clearly abandoned by the gods。 The villagers blame her corrupted bloodline—her father was a Yehuli man, one of the much-loathed servants of the fanatical king。 When soldiers arrive from the Holy Order of Woodsmen to claim a pagan girl for the king’s blood sacrifice, Évike is betrayed by her fellow villagers and surrendered。

But when monsters attack the Woodsmen and their captive en route, slaughtering everyone but Évike and the cold, one-eyed captain, they have no choice but to rely on each other。 Except he’s no ordinary Woodsman—he’s the disgraced prince, Gáspár Bárány, whose father needs pagan magic to consolidate his power。 Gáspár fears that his cruelly zealous brother plans to seize the throne and instigate a violent reign that would damn the pagans and the Yehuli alike。 As the son of a reviled foreign queen, Gáspár understands what it’s like to be an outcast, and he and Évike make a tenuous pact to stop his brother。

As their mission takes them from the bitter northern tundra to the smog-choked capital, their mutual loathing slowly turns to affection, bound by a shared history of alienation and oppression。 However, trust can easily turn to betrayal, and as Évike reconnects with her estranged father and discovers her own hidden magic, she and Gáspár need to decide whose side they’re on, and what they’re willing to give up for a nation that never cared for them at all。

So many facets to this story it’s really nuanced and complex and superbbbbbbb。 Really cool to see the historical influence in this book and it’s story and the enemies to lovers trope never fails me

Ok so the story line was good but the main characters love interest was terrible his personality his plot himself in general also if your wanting a romance they don’t even end up together so。

4。25Enemies to lovers between a wolf girl and a woodsman send to bring her to his king to be sacrificed, monsters inspired by folklore, political intrigue, the search of a woman between two faiths/ethnicities to find her true identity—what's not to love? It is pretty graphically violent and gory, so read with caution。 4。25Enemies to lovers between a wolf girl and a woodsman send to bring her to his king to be sacrificed, monsters inspired by folklore, political intrigue, the search of a woman between two faiths/ethnicities to find her true identity—what's not to love? The one thing that kept me going through this story was the pagan mythology。 The creatures in this book were so dark and grim! I was so fascinated by the storytelling that went on between the characters and all the terrifying creatures they came across in the forests。That’s about all that held my attention though。 The characters felt bland, the plot slow and the politics bored me。

loved it but it was very complicated。

Rounding up from how I genuinely feel about this book because I think the audiobook format was not the best way to consume the story for me。 There were parts that didn’t sink in and didn’t connect with me via the audiobook that might have gone differently reading it physically。 But overall I enjoyed the romance and the pagan vs organized religion conflict, but I feel like there was a lot more going on that I didn’t feel enough connection to, such as the power struggles with the king and his line Rounding up from how I genuinely feel about this book because I think the audiobook format was not the best way to consume the story for me。 There were parts that didn’t sink in and didn’t connect with me via the audiobook that might have gone differently reading it physically。 But overall I enjoyed the romance and the pagan vs organized religion conflict, but I feel like there was a lot more going on that I didn’t feel enough connection to, such as the power struggles with the king and his line of succession。 I also never fully understood the magic system。 。。。more

3。5 rounded up。 So many things I liked about the book。 Creepy setting, star crossed lovers, magic and mythology。。 However, something in the actual execution left me wishing for something a little different。 The book certainly took some very serious ideas, religious persecution, moral ambiguities, allegiance to your country/people and made me think that life is complicated and answers are not always clear。 Is it ok to compromise for the greater good? I really appreciated that aspect of the book。 3。5 rounded up。 So many things I liked about the book。 Creepy setting, star crossed lovers, magic and mythology。。 However, something in the actual execution left me wishing for something a little different。 The book certainly took some very serious ideas, religious persecution, moral ambiguities, allegiance to your country/people and made me think that life is complicated and answers are not always clear。 Is it ok to compromise for the greater good? I really appreciated that aspect of the book。 However, something about the book didn't totally work for me, especially the way the relationship between Evike and Gaspar was written。 Her snarling about him keeping her warm and his conflicted feelings grew tiresome。 If this aspect of the book was tweeked a bit, I think the depiction of their complex relationship would have worked better。 However, I enjoyed the book and look forward to reading this author's next work。 Also, loved the cover art! 。。。more

What a slog。 Despite the fact that there was a lot going on, there was absolutely no suspense or sense of urgency until the last 15% of the book。

Gotta be one of my fav books this yearAlthough it did have a slow start I found myself slowly and surely captivated by the story; a wolf girl and a prince vying for his throne was a fantastic and unlikely match。 I enjoyed how the plot played with their dynamic both in travel and at the capital。 Very satisfying characterisation and justified actions from both of them - this was court politics at its finest (felt very Jude Duarte!!)。 However, what really sold this book for me was the Hungarian and Gotta be one of my fav books this yearAlthough it did have a slow start I found myself slowly and surely captivated by the story; a wolf girl and a prince vying for his throne was a fantastic and unlikely match。 I enjoyed how the plot played with their dynamic both in travel and at the capital。 Very satisfying characterisation and justified actions from both of them - this was court politics at its finest (felt very Jude Duarte!!)。 However, what really sold this book for me was the Hungarian and Jewish mythology; I haven't read many fantasy stories with these cultures as main inspiration, and was pleasantly surprised it。 Particularly Hungarian mythology, which I know little about; it was disturbingly and delightfully gory, and the book did not shy away from grotesque description。 This was a cruel world to live in, and it made sure you knew it。 Speaking of, ahhhhhhhhh the descriptions in this book。 I had to take a photo of a page bc the description was so hauntingly descriptive。 It's almost got a fairytale-esque lyric quality to the writing, and as a result, the world and people felt charmingly (and sometimes, terrifyingly) real, even in a heavily fantastical setting of magic and monsters。 A++++ 。。。more

Unsure how to rate this, because it has BIG YA vibes to me despite the actual age of the heroine。 Loved the first line, the myths/tales, the lesbians, Katalin, a good number of the metaphors and similes (including some stupendous gore/creepy like the king's crown)。 Unfortunately didn't like Evike herself, the main ship, the pacing, the weirdly fairy-talesque ending, and some magic system choices, starting with the (cis) gender determism。 Would have worked better as a novella。。。or at minimum a tr Unsure how to rate this, because it has BIG YA vibes to me despite the actual age of the heroine。 Loved the first line, the myths/tales, the lesbians, Katalin, a good number of the metaphors and similes (including some stupendous gore/creepy like the king's crown)。 Unfortunately didn't like Evike herself, the main ship, the pacing, the weirdly fairy-talesque ending, and some magic system choices, starting with the (cis) gender determism。 Would have worked better as a novella。。。or at minimum a trilogy, but a lot of potential under the messy surface。 。。。more

The writing of the book isn’t “bad”, but as many other reviewers point out it is extremely repetitive。 The plot would have been more interesting if the author hadn’t packed in so many different “folk tales” from like 3+ cultures in the book。 The plot could have been condensed to like。。 150 pages in my opinion。 For reference: you know 60% of the plot by reading the jacket blurb prior to starting the book。 But my biggest gripe and the reason it took me 2x the time it would normally take for me to The writing of the book isn’t “bad”, but as many other reviewers point out it is extremely repetitive。 The plot would have been more interesting if the author hadn’t packed in so many different “folk tales” from like 3+ cultures in the book。 The plot could have been condensed to like。。 150 pages in my opinion。 For reference: you know 60% of the plot by reading the jacket blurb prior to starting the book。 But my biggest gripe and the reason it took me 2x the time it would normally take for me to read a 400 page book, is that I was NOT invested emotionally in the characters or the romance。 I didn’t even hate the antagonist very much, nor was I “rooting” for the protagonist or the “good people”。 It all fell flat for me。 The character development would have improved the story immensely。 We only really get to know the protagonist, and she’s so unlikeable and flat that I didn’t care much about her journey, nor did I see very much character development happen (other than that she returned to her home village and cares about people other than herself by the end I guess?)。I’m surprised Samantha Shannon, who wrote one of my favorite fantasy books of all time (priory) had such positive things to say, honestly, as that was a huge motivator for me to give this book a go。 。。。more

I was looking forward to read some fantasy book that was not YA, as I seemed to be stuck on those for a while。 This one was definitely not YA, as it dealt with some serious issues in a serious way。 The background folklore was also very interesting and the world was very rich, and modeled to our own。 On the other side, the pacing could have been a bit better, and I was not 100% invested in the characters。 All in all, I am curious to see what this author offers us next, as I believe this was a pro I was looking forward to read some fantasy book that was not YA, as I seemed to be stuck on those for a while。 This one was definitely not YA, as it dealt with some serious issues in a serious way。 The background folklore was also very interesting and the world was very rich, and modeled to our own。 On the other side, the pacing could have been a bit better, and I was not 100% invested in the characters。 All in all, I am curious to see what this author offers us next, as I believe this was a promising book。 。。。more

4⭐️If you are looking for a book with complex characters, addictive and diverse folklore and fully realized world building then this is the book for you。 I feel quickly and easily into this book and had a very hard time putting it down。 Fair warning there is lots of violence and mentions/actual self harm in this book so reader do beware。 This books brings everything atmospheric and dark to life, it feels visceral and raw。 The writing is fascinating and reminds me of The Bear and The Nightingale。 4⭐️If you are looking for a book with complex characters, addictive and diverse folklore and fully realized world building then this is the book for you。 I feel quickly and easily into this book and had a very hard time putting it down。 Fair warning there is lots of violence and mentions/actual self harm in this book so reader do beware。 This books brings everything atmospheric and dark to life, it feels visceral and raw。 The writing is fascinating and reminds me of The Bear and The Nightingale。 It examines very closely the idea of oppression, persecution and generational trauma as well as religious violence, the character development was smartly and creatively done。Now my one draw back was that the romantic subplot was very much。。。 a subplot。 Maybe even too understated for what it should have been Evike and Gáspár go through so much together and for each other that I felt they deserved much more time for those feelings they have for each other to be exposed and expressed。 It gave me much more of a dark and muted Katniss x Peeta vibe than what I was hoping for。 。。。more

I loved this book。 I saw it compared to Spinning Silver (which I also love), but I find that comparison to be a bit reductive。 I recommend reading this book for its own sake and not comparing。 It's a book about faith, cultural identity and oral tradition。 It's so easy to be swept away by each story told within the book and the characters come alive with their constant retelling。 I especially enjoyed how the power/ powerlessness of the main character constantly bucks expectations。 Whether or not I loved this book。 I saw it compared to Spinning Silver (which I also love), but I find that comparison to be a bit reductive。 I recommend reading this book for its own sake and not comparing。 It's a book about faith, cultural identity and oral tradition。 It's so easy to be swept away by each story told within the book and the characters come alive with their constant retelling。 I especially enjoyed how the power/ powerlessness of the main character constantly bucks expectations。 Whether or not she has magic is not what makes Evike special。 Rather, sheer determination, perseverance and support from others are her strength。 。。。more

CW: Mutilation, animal cruelty, self-harmThis never really came together for me。 There were a lot of plot holes, and I hated the enemies to lovers romance that never made sense or felt believable。 Everyone was awful, and then they…weren’t? There wasn’t any character development。 The story itself had a lot of promise, and the author’s note at the end is perturbing。
