Peter is desperate to get back to his girlfriend before she pops out their twins。 Seeing as how she is a river goddess， he is London's second best wizard cop， and someone just committed murder by magically carving out a man's heart， no part of this week is going to go easily。 By this point， Peter is equally deft when wielding magic and police bureaucracy， so a mystery that spans centuries and crosses international borders gets wrapped up with hardly any destruction of property at all， by his sta Peter is desperate to get back to his girlfriend before she pops out their twins。 Seeing as how she is a river goddess， he is London's second best wizard cop， and someone just committed murder by magically carving out a man's heart， no part of this week is going to go easily。 By this point， Peter is equally deft when wielding magic and police bureaucracy， so a mystery that spans centuries and crosses international borders gets wrapped up with hardly any destruction of property at all， by his standards。 Peter has really matured as a character， which is not to say he's stopped quipping or throwing out pop culture references。 Thanks， Netgalley。 。。。more

I have been wanting to try this series for a while， but since I was so far behind， I wasn’t sure。 I went ahead and requested this book even without reading previous ones。 Yes， I could tell there were things I didn’t understand， but I know this would have been hard to put in the ninth book to bring everyone up do speed。 I was still pretty engaged in this book anyway。 This author’s writing is very clever， and I loved the little clever sayings and inferences to movies and the like， and I’m sure the I have been wanting to try this series for a while， but since I was so far behind， I wasn’t sure。 I went ahead and requested this book even without reading previous ones。 Yes， I could tell there were things I didn’t understand， but I know this would have been hard to put in the ninth book to bring everyone up do speed。 I was still pretty engaged in this book anyway。 This author’s writing is very clever， and I loved the little clever sayings and inferences to movies and the like， and I’m sure there are a few inferences I missed。 I did also find this a tad wordy， but that’s probably because I’m not much for history， and this did have quite a bit of history。 The characters were so fun， the plot interesting， and the overall universe is intriguing。 I really liked this book， and I will definitely read more going forward。 Recommend。 I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed。 。。。more

Advance copy from NetGalley。I liked seeing Peter， Nightingale， and the gang， but the plot this time around didn’t really grab me。 It felt like there was more exposition than usual， and I found myself wishing I had waited for the audiobook and the dulcet tones of Kobna Holbrook-Smith。 I’m a little weary of Leslie’s appearances at this stage too。 Not to be missed， of course， but it wasn’t my favorite of the series。

Ben Aaronovitch has done it again！ He sucked me into a very strange London where Peter Grant， Nightingale， and the Folly crew need to stop a killer before she kills again！ The problems just mount up as a death in the London Silver Vault leads to a torture victim in an apartment and then attacks on others。 There is also the issue of Lesley's warning and appearances and the fact that Peter needs to wrap up this case very soon since Beverly is about to give birth to twins and he needs to be present Ben Aaronovitch has done it again！ He sucked me into a very strange London where Peter Grant， Nightingale， and the Folly crew need to stop a killer before she kills again！ The problems just mount up as a death in the London Silver Vault leads to a torture victim in an apartment and then attacks on others。 There is also the issue of Lesley's warning and appearances and the fact that Peter needs to wrap up this case very soon since Beverly is about to give birth to twins and he needs to be present， or else！ So a very fun addition to the Rivers of London series that brings Peter new headaches and joys。 Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read this tale！ 。。。more

Readable but rote。 The plot is a bit of a retread of some previous books， and I never found myself at all invested in what happened to the characters at the centre of it—there was a lack of tension to it all that I found reminiscent of False Value， the previous installment in the series。 I appreciate the clear work that Ben Aaronovitch is putting into broadening the scope of his magical world and having Peter learn new things about how it works and the possibilities of magic， but I did get the f Readable but rote。 The plot is a bit of a retread of some previous books， and I never found myself at all invested in what happened to the characters at the centre of it—there was a lack of tension to it all that I found reminiscent of False Value， the previous installment in the series。 I appreciate the clear work that Ben Aaronovitch is putting into broadening the scope of his magical world and having Peter learn new things about how it works and the possibilities of magic， but I did get the feeling while reading that Aaronovitch doesn't feel very driven to write the series anymore and is simply going through the motions because it's been so successful。 Mostly， though， I'm just a bit sad that Peter and Nightingale don't even seem like friends anymore， when their partnership/mentorship was one of the things I enjoyed most about the first few RoL books。 。。。more
