I loved the characters! Now I’m going to read some reviews to see if I can understand more about the somewhat surrealistic parts。

Absolutly no idea what I have just read。 Ramblings, mosty。 To be fair I couldn't finish it but gave it half way through thinking maybe I was missing something, but no。 Maybe it's me?

I have one of Ali Smith's novels on my shelves and I'm not sure why I've not ever read it。 This was my first introduction to her work and I loved it。 Literary, multi-themed, a bit experimental, the sense of time shifting among years and ages; it's about life and death and reading and art and the creation of one's world, and at the core the wonderful friendship between Daniel Gluck and Elisabeth Demand that began when she was a child, fatherless, and he their next door neighbor。 It's 2016, and Gl I have one of Ali Smith's novels on my shelves and I'm not sure why I've not ever read it。 This was my first introduction to her work and I loved it。 Literary, multi-themed, a bit experimental, the sense of time shifting among years and ages; it's about life and death and reading and art and the creation of one's world, and at the core the wonderful friendship between Daniel Gluck and Elisabeth Demand that began when she was a child, fatherless, and he their next door neighbor。 It's 2016, and Gluck, now 101, is in a care home。 Brexit has come to the UK, has divided people, and it's against that backdrop that Elisabeth, who hasn't seen Gluck in perhaps a decade, learns of his state, and begins to visit him again a few times a week。 。。。more

I binge read this book even though, half the time, I didn't really know what was going on (and if anything was really going on at all?)。 Who knows if I'll continue in this series。 But God bless Daniel Gluck。 I binge read this book even though, half the time, I didn't really know what was going on (and if anything was really going on at all?)。 Who knows if I'll continue in this series。 But God bless Daniel Gluck。 。。。more

Started out strongly but overall felt like multiple first drafts of short stories or how the novel could have started。 Although the prose is good, the story is disjointed and doesn't quite come together。 Started out strongly but overall felt like multiple first drafts of short stories or how the novel could have started。 Although the prose is good, the story is disjointed and doesn't quite come together。 。。。more

The leaves are not falling just yet but the rain certainly is, and the weather is colder and I'm wearing my tracksuit pants again, and it's nice to read under a desk light at midday, with a cool breeze and the soft sound of raindrops against my window。 It's even better with a good book, and with one that understands this feeling so well。 One month ago I couldn't do this, one month ago everything was different, even one week ago was different。 It's all very temporary these days。 This book is abou The leaves are not falling just yet but the rain certainly is, and the weather is colder and I'm wearing my tracksuit pants again, and it's nice to read under a desk light at midday, with a cool breeze and the soft sound of raindrops against my window。 It's even better with a good book, and with one that understands this feeling so well。 One month ago I couldn't do this, one month ago everything was different, even one week ago was different。 It's all very temporary these days。 This book is about Brexit, but it's also about a lot of things。 It's also very good。 I think I'll wait until June to read the next one。 。。。more

quite an odd book。 it made me feel a range of emotions -- discomfort, interest, sadness。 i felt satisfied with the ending, but there was a disconnect that i couldn't fully understand。 was i even meant to lol? the dreamscapes were confusing, real life was a bit baffling, but i can generally say that i enjoyed the outcome。 quite an odd book。 it made me feel a range of emotions -- discomfort, interest, sadness。 i felt satisfied with the ending, but there was a disconnect that i couldn't fully understand。 was i even meant to lol? the dreamscapes were confusing, real life was a bit baffling, but i can generally say that i enjoyed the outcome。 。。。more

Interesting format that is not your typical fiction, but it’s easy to read as well because it flows。 In that sense, it reminds me of Ursula K Le Guin’s flow of sense, but this book is more in the manner of Patti Smith’s Just Kids。 It really reminded me of that, just more condensed, more flow of thoughts, and less conventional。 I loved that, it depicted Elisabeth’s life, the way that she experienced it, like a human in reality would have experienced it - sometimes choppy, other times not even mak Interesting format that is not your typical fiction, but it’s easy to read as well because it flows。 In that sense, it reminds me of Ursula K Le Guin’s flow of sense, but this book is more in the manner of Patti Smith’s Just Kids。 It really reminded me of that, just more condensed, more flow of thoughts, and less conventional。 I loved that, it depicted Elisabeth’s life, the way that she experienced it, like a human in reality would have experienced it - sometimes choppy, other times not even making much sense, going back and forth in time because memory reappears while new memories are being made。 I liked how such a short volume can contain so much depth。 。。。more

First time reading Ali Smith。 In the London Review Bookshop Podcast she speaks at length of its “collage form”, which feels right for this loosely structured novel that moves fleetingly through thoughts, memories, dreams, timelines, surreal conversations at the Post Office。 It’s a novel with a lot of big and small ideas about aging, displacement, Brexit, western civilization, art, innocence, family, wonder, but somehow the tone is totally light and often funny - and Autumn reads quickly。 The hig First time reading Ali Smith。 In the London Review Bookshop Podcast she speaks at length of its “collage form”, which feels right for this loosely structured novel that moves fleetingly through thoughts, memories, dreams, timelines, surreal conversations at the Post Office。 It’s a novel with a lot of big and small ideas about aging, displacement, Brexit, western civilization, art, innocence, family, wonder, but somehow the tone is totally light and often funny - and Autumn reads quickly。 The highlights for me were every gorgeously written conversation between Daniel and Elisabeth (Dwight Garner for NYT drew comparisons to Harold and Maude sans romance - it is similarly saccharine but a bit smarter, more realistic, and I felt more touching given Elisabeth’s young age)。 There were certainly sections that flew over my head (either for cultural reasons or just me not being enough of a smarty pants) and I wasn’t invested in the significant detour into the forgotten artist Pauline Boty - I failed to connect it to Autumn’s larger ideas in any meaningful way, but I’m still mulling the whole thing over。 It’s kind of sneaky that way, this is an accessible and readable novel with a lot going on beneath the surface。 。。。more

Ali Smith could slap me in the face and I’d thank her。 I just don’t understand how she’s not running a country or something。 She’s so intelligent I can’t even absorb half of what she’s laying down。

Most of the writing in this book is absolutely delicious。 It floats dreamily between reality, the subconscious, and observations of society。 I think this book wanted to be just that: observations and feelings。 But my enjoyment of it (I’m a solid plot person through and through) makes it a solid 3。5/5

I wasn’t overwhelmed by this - I felt like it was trying too hard in places to be very self-aware ‘meta’ literature and in the process the story got a bit lost at times。 I enjoyed the present day parts more than the forays into the past。 Undecided on whether to read the other seasons but happy to be convinced!
