good story time book

I can see why Jory John and Pete Oswald are two of my favorite authors! Another great book with a moral to the story! As they write, "I no longer feel lost at sea。 It's more like floating down a river and the best part is: There's always more to learn! Because we're all smart cookies!" I was pleasantly surprised to see the smart cookie had written a poem, and it was his poem that made him feel good about himself! While the message of the book overall is good, I didn't love the execution。 The story didn't flow for me and it seemed a little complicated。 Cute illustrations though。 While the message of the book overall is good, I didn't love the execution。 The story didn't flow for me and it seemed a little complicated。 Cute illustrations though。 。。。more

I don’t know if The Smart Cookie was meant to make me feel good about my ADHD but it did 🥺 this book was so relatable to me that I feel compelled to own it!

A little cookie feels like she needs to excel at everything, which hinders her creativity, until she finds her own unique creative outlet。 These "life guidance" books in the Bad Seed series are a bit didactic to me, but also good for having discussions with kids, and I certainly relate to a lot of them too。 A little cookie feels like she needs to excel at everything, which hinders her creativity, until she finds her own unique creative outlet。 These "life guidance" books in the Bad Seed series are a bit didactic to me, but also good for having discussions with kids, and I certainly relate to a lot of them too。 。。。more

What a great story! I love it! This would have been great when the boys were younger。 Recommend for those who need a little extra encouragement when they feel different。

This book shares the positive message that kids don't have to have perfect academic performance to be "smart。" It's okay to take time to figure out what you excel at and what you enjoy。 This book embues confidence and encourages kids to try new things。 This book shares the positive message that kids don't have to have perfect academic performance to be "smart。" It's okay to take time to figure out what you excel at and what you enjoy。 This book embues confidence and encourages kids to try new things。 。。。more

Smart cookie needed some positive encouragement to be less nervous。 I liked the illustrations but the aha! parts got annoying。 Didn't enjoy it as much as couch potato but the kids listened to it so many times (Vox reader) that the battery died。 Smart cookie needed some positive encouragement to be less nervous。 I liked the illustrations but the aha! parts got annoying。 Didn't enjoy it as much as couch potato but the kids listened to it so many times (Vox reader) that the battery died。 。。。more

One star off because there were a couple parts that weren’t quite on point, but, overall great message。

I really enjoy this book because I feel like it gives a really great message to children。 It tells a story about a cookie that does not feel she is like the others around her。 The story shows the development of the cookie and how she does things to still feel like herself。 The meaning behind this story shows the reader that they do not have to change in order to fit in with the ones around them Be yourself and do not change for others。 You do not always have to be the smartest person, but you ca I really enjoy this book because I feel like it gives a really great message to children。 It tells a story about a cookie that does not feel she is like the others around her。 The story shows the development of the cookie and how she does things to still feel like herself。 The meaning behind this story shows the reader that they do not have to change in order to fit in with the ones around them Be yourself and do not change for others。 You do not always have to be the smartest person, but you can always be the nicest and most caring person in the room。 。。。more

Sweetly illustrated, this book teaches kids that everyone has a special talent and it's okay to not be the best at everything。 Humorous and heartwarming, though perhaps not as clever as some of the others in John's "Food Group" series。 Sweetly illustrated, this book teaches kids that everyone has a special talent and it's okay to not be the best at everything。 Humorous and heartwarming, though perhaps not as clever as some of the others in John's "Food Group" series。 。。。more

A cute, beautifully drawn story with a great message。

Finally another Jory John book that lives up to the hype。 Several others have seemed to have a bit aggressive or at least narrow sighted messaging, but this one works much better with the sort of messaging I want to encourage。 Probably a better fit for a school aged child since the nearly 3 year old seemed engaged but confused about many of the school references。 Everyone has something they are good at and we aren't all good at everything :) Finally another Jory John book that lives up to the hype。 Several others have seemed to have a bit aggressive or at least narrow sighted messaging, but this one works much better with the sort of messaging I want to encourage。 Probably a better fit for a school aged child since the nearly 3 year old seemed engaged but confused about many of the school references。 Everyone has something they are good at and we aren't all good at everything :) 。。。more

Finding what you're good at can be tricky, but always worth the discovery in yourself。 Not everyone will like to do the same things and that's OK! Affirming! We all have talents and it takes patience to find them and it helps to have support!

Great illustrations with a great message about being smart 。。。 in your own smart way。This would be a great read aloud for early elementary。Reviewed from a library copy。

As children we’ve all envied someone in school, for being cooler, taller, or smarter。 We’ve all been insecure about our abilities in some aspect。 This book shows children that being “smart” can be subjective。 It highlights the power in finding the thing you’re good at and the feeling it brings knowing that you too can be a smart cookie。

Sarah

Cookie learns that we are all smart, but sometimes in unique ways。

A cookie learns that there are ways to feel smart beyond traditional academics。 This pun-laden picture book is a cookie’s account of how she was finally able to feel “smart” after having her confidence boosted when she discovers she was good at something outside of the school curriculum。 Young readers who struggle in school may relate to the story and/or be encouraged to try learning a new skill。I had mixed feelings about the story。 On one hand, the message that there are many different abilitie A cookie learns that there are ways to feel smart beyond traditional academics。 This pun-laden picture book is a cookie’s account of how she was finally able to feel “smart” after having her confidence boosted when she discovers she was good at something outside of the school curriculum。 Young readers who struggle in school may relate to the story and/or be encouraged to try learning a new skill。I had mixed feelings about the story。 On one hand, the message that there are many different abilities that have value is an important one。 I was also happy to see a teacher encouraging a struggling student。 Cookie’s description of feeling “lost at sea” was a poignant one。 On the other hand, the story is also reflective of the American obsession with non-conformity, the everybody-gets-a-trophy mentality, and the current trend of devaluating academia and academic performance。 Cookie is highly sensitive and conscientious, and any mistake sends her into a positive feedback loop, doom spiral。 She feels anxious taking tests and answering questions in class, but she never attempts to cultivate any coping skills to help alleviate her feelings of anxiousness。 She also plays the victim。 Cookie doesn’t practice her spelling words or math facts to gain confidence with the material。 She doesn’t reframe her inner narrative from "I am the last to finish tests" to I will use the entire allotted time to do well。 She doesn’t practice good study habits to boost her confidence。 Cookie surrenders all control and wallows in her negative emotions。 Her negative inner monologue is creating a self-fulfilling prophecy of failure。Cookie seems to believe that she should magically be able to do well in school and feels bad because nothing is easy or automatic for her。 She doesn’t understand that even the smartest people will eventually hit a wall if all they do is coast by on their raw intellect。 What appears to be nearly effortless is actually the result of hard work behind the scenes。 Small children who do well on spelling tests have caregivers who drill them nightly on their spelling words。 The ones who do well in math have adults in their lives making them do math fact flash cards。 The ones who don’t struggle with reading have caregivers who read to them and work with them on sight words。 Older children who do well likewise have involved adults helping them lay the groundwork for success。 What happens at home is just as important as what happens at school。 In fact, it is probably more important。 Cookie is pitiable in that her adult caregivers are completely MIA。Then there is the simple fact that not everyone is academically gifted。 It’s nothing of which to be ashamed or about which to feel bad。 Part of being a functional person is knowing and accepting one’s strengths and limitations。 It takes all kinds。 And as the pandemic has proved, it is the ordinary folks, especially those working low wage jobs, who keep society running。 In conclusion, the surface story is fine, but the deeper implications are somewhat problematic。 。。。more

With having a classroom full of very diverse kids, we read this book and were able to talk about all their different talents and different things they are able to do。

Fantastic addition to the series。 I love how the book focuses on different types of smarts and strengths。 Wonderful book to encourage the little ones who may not be the strongest academic students but have individual talents to share。

What a great message! I think we are all smart and talented in our own ways and "The Smart Cookie" shows how one student finds confidence and creativity。 As a parent of a kid who sometimes feels shy in school, we liked that this book showed how the student overcame those feelings of fear and insecurity and worked through them。 What a great message!
