Summary

After angering a local gangster, seventeen-year-old Sena Korhosen must flee with her prize fighting wolf, Iska, in tow。 A team of scientists offer to pay her way off her frozen planet on one condition: she gets them to the finish line of the planet’s infamous sled race。 Though Sena always swore she’d never race after it claimed both her mothers’ lives, it’s now her only option。

But the tundra is a treacherous place, and as the race unfolds and their lives are threatened at every turn, Sena starts to question her own abilities。 She must discover whether she's strong enough to survive the wild – whether she and Iska together are strong enough to get them all out alive。

A captivating debut about survival, found family, and the bond between a girl and a wolf that delivers a fresh twist on classic survival stories and frontier myths。

The audiobook was fun to listen to with a good narrator。I like stories about adventurous journeys and this was certainly such a story。Though the race described in the synops only starts at about 60% of the book, the first half doesn't feel too long or slow paced at all。 Because enough happens。 With Senna, her Iska and the people she meets。I loved reading about the bond between Iska and Senna。 How it grows throughout the story, depending on each other。 But also the friendship she builds with Remy The audiobook was fun to listen to with a good narrator。I like stories about adventurous journeys and this was certainly such a story。Though the race described in the synops only starts at about 60% of the book, the first half doesn't feel too long or slow paced at all。 Because enough happens。 With Senna, her Iska and the people she meets。I loved reading about the bond between Iska and Senna。 How it grows throughout the story, depending on each other。 But also the friendship she builds with Remy。The worldbuilding was wonderfully done, a must of course seeing the subject。 But well executed。 And as someone who rather has it hot than cold, I could feel the story in my bones sometimes。 Brr 。。。more

The world of this book is unlike anything I’ve ever read before。 Probably because I don’t read a ton of sci-fi。 It’s set on a icy planet where there are monsters that can kill you, intense weather that can kill you, and crime lords that can kill you。 It’s an exciting place to read about but definitely not one I’d like to visit。 My favorite aspect of the story was the relationship between main character Sena and the wolf she befriends, Iska。 I loved that the main relationship was between a girl a The world of this book is unlike anything I’ve ever read before。 Probably because I don’t read a ton of sci-fi。 It’s set on a icy planet where there are monsters that can kill you, intense weather that can kill you, and crime lords that can kill you。 It’s an exciting place to read about but definitely not one I’d like to visit。 My favorite aspect of the story was the relationship between main character Sena and the wolf she befriends, Iska。 I loved that the main relationship was between a girl and her animal friend rather than a romantic relationship。 Having no romance in a YA book is always a bold choice that I appreciate。 This book isn’t perfect but it has a ton of fun characters and non stop action, especially in the second half during the Iditarod-like race。 。。。more

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read and review an ARC of this book! This was--to be blunt--sort of a middle of the road book for me。 The world building is definitely where this author and novel excel。 The atmosphere was sublime--the cold and barren landscape, the grit of survival, the wolves, they're all so vividly imagined and I could really feel the setting coming to life。 Where this story sort of lost points, though, was the pacing。 This novel is *so* slowly paced。 Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to read and review an ARC of this book! This was--to be blunt--sort of a middle of the road book for me。 The world building is definitely where this author and novel excel。 The atmosphere was sublime--the cold and barren landscape, the grit of survival, the wolves, they're all so vividly imagined and I could really feel the setting coming to life。 Where this story sort of lost points, though, was the pacing。 This novel is *so* slowly paced。 I could honestly say the real action, the *meat* of the story, doesn't begin until roughly half-way through。 Slow pacing, slow-to-start action is fine, but not in a story that is nearly 400 pages long。 It started to feel like a slog。 I also think that the characterization was a little。。。strange。 The stakes of this race are supposedly so high but the MC is just so nonchalantly described and the descriptions are bordering on the edge of purple, which makes the narrative flow very slow and meandering--doesn't really match what should be the intense, fast pace of this high stakes book。 Overall, a solid debut。 I'm not in love with this work but I would absolutely read their next novel! If this is their starting place I am excited to see what's next! 。。。more

After a bone-chilling adventure with a freaking wolf - we get, yet again, a rather soft, middle of the road ending。 Of course everyone lives, of course the bad guys die。 Because that's life, right? I wish for once one of these books had the balls to go all the way and kill some good people (or wolf), because life's not fair, and in this icy dessert of a book, that should be more than apparent。 After a bone-chilling adventure with a freaking wolf - we get, yet again, a rather soft, middle of the road ending。 Of course everyone lives, of course the bad guys die。 Because that's life, right? Loved this。 It is no surprise that my favorite character is the wolf。 I enjoyed the story, but the pacing was a bit inconsistent like other reviews have said。 I also have so many questions about the people that were left behind。 In first person present tense I get that we only get to see what the main character sees, but it seems like a convenient way for the author to notnhave to answer questions too 😂 The world building was wonderful, I felt like I was racing alongside them。

Took me long enough, but I finished! And I really liked this book, all in all。 The world and plot were interesting, the writing style is good, and I rather liked the characters (especially Remy)。 Definitely a worthwhile read。

SUCH a cool (ha, pun intended) idea。 Plot is a little slow, the race doesn't happen till waaaaay later, but that did not mean that the story was boring leading up to the race itself。 In fact I really liked the characters, their interactions, and the overall book, so the action-packed scenes that came later felt thoroughly built up to and even if it was slower, but the time we arrived at it, I had been hooked from the beginning and I was soooo hyped and ready。 SUCH a cool (ha, pun intended) idea。 Plot is a little slow, the race doesn't happen till waaaaay later, but that did not mean that the story was boring leading up to the race itself。 In fact I really liked the characters, their interactions, and the overall book, so the action-packed scenes that came later felt thoroughly built up to and even if it was slower, but the time we arrived at it, I had been hooked from the beginning and I was soooo hyped and ready。 。。。more

Soooooo good! I liked how this sci-fi book was localized to one planet for starters。 I could only imagine the dominant cold weather on my skin at times with the descriptions。 I also loved that the love story was the bond between Sena and her wolf companion Iska instead of an actual romance with someone。 Overall it put me on edge in a good way and made me smile and tear up。 That’s all I need!

Balto plus angry teen girl? I’m in!” I’m just sad it took about 1/3 of the book for the synopsis to even be relevant in the story。 So it started slow, oh well, that’s fine, most books do。 This book also has a LOT of exposition at the beginning。 Though it does take some time, Long does explain a lot of how the universe works and Sena’s background and everything。 What I did love about this book - and why I’m giving it a higher rating than what I was planning - is that once the action part got going, it went and Did。 Not。 Stop。 Meg Long went HARD during the last 1/3 of the book。 Also, the women???? Strong, bad-ass queens。 I would die for them all。 Even the animal ones。 Here’s where I’m torn though。 The ending was so open that I was shocked。 Threads were not just left open, they were straight up dropped and left to drift in space for eternity。 So, if there is a sequel or companion book, then I will gladly keep my rating at a 4 and GLADLY read any book from this (hopefully) series。 But if this ends up being a stand-alone then I’ll have to lower my rating because just too many threads were tossed away。 I really, REALLY hope there is a sequel though! I’m fully invested in this world Long has created and I am willing to go on a journey with her。 。。。more

YA sci-fi novel, set on an unforgiving and eternally frozen planet where it's all about survival and the sled race。 I wouldn't say it's "fun" to read but the setting is strong and fast-paced。 But like all YA books about teens it drones on and on about the race (which doesn't start until well after your half way through the book) and about her mothers' deaths。 We get it。 She's lonely and bitter。 And comes off like a typical angsty teen。 But when the race does start, it's quite thrilling。This book YA sci-fi novel, set on an unforgiving and eternally frozen planet where it's all about survival and the sled race。 I wouldn't say it's "fun" to read but the setting is strong and fast-paced。 But like all YA books about teens it drones on and on about the race (which doesn't start until well after your half way through the book) and about her mothers' deaths。 We get it。 She's lonely and bitter。 And comes off like a typical angsty teen。 But when the race does start, it's quite thrilling。This book solidifies my idea that I have no desire to live in a frozen wasteland。 。。。more

Great story that could have benefitted from a great editor。 My only issue with this book is the beginning 1/3 was extremely repetitive。 The author continued bringing up the main character’s past and in the same way, it was just annoying to constantly hear。 Once you got past this point, the story was fast paced and unputdownable。 Would recommend this book to anyone that is willing to give it a little time as it will be worth it。

I didn’t finish this one。 I love the cover and the title, and the story has an interesting premise, but the characters feel flat and the pace is unbearably slow。 I kept wondering to myself, why did the author even bother setting the story on another planet, when she clearly wanted to write about nineteenth-century Yukon? Perhaps the last half of the book takes a turn for the better, but I couldn’t force myself to read another page。

(3。5 stars)Cold the Night, Fast the Wolves seemed like an arctic adventure with a hint of sci-fi, but by the end it seemed more like a video game。 I say that because, though the plot was interesting, the constant turns being thrown in got a little old by the end。 It reminded me of shows where every episode is only twenty minutes, so they make all of them a cliffhanger。Our main character Sena caught my attention quickly。 Tough, smart, stubborn—not too different from me, if I’m being honest。 At ti (3。5 stars)Cold the Night, Fast the Wolves seemed like an arctic adventure with a hint of sci-fi, but by the end it seemed more like a video game。 I say that because, though the plot was interesting, the constant turns being thrown in got a little old by the end。 It reminded me of shows where every episode is only twenty minutes, so they make all of them a cliffhanger。Our main character Sena caught my attention quickly。 Tough, smart, stubborn—not too different from me, if I’m being honest。 At times her stubbornness bordered on stupidity, but the character was well written and her complexity was admirable。I wasn’t a huge fan of the ending because it was just… meh。 Basically a happily ever after with enough vagueness to let you decide。 Multiple characters from the beginning weren’t mentioned at all, so we have no clue where they ended up。 Mostly, this book simply didn’t snag me。 You win some, you lose some, but if you’re looking for a plot that’s basically “Iditarod on crack” then pick this up! 。。。more
