Summary

SPEAK AGAIN THE ANCIENT OATHS,

LIFE BEFORE DEATH。
STRENGTH BEFORE WEAKNESS。
JOURNEY BEFORE DESTINATION。

AND RETURN TO MEN THE SHARDS THEY ONCE BORE。

THE KNIGHTS RADIANT MUST STAND AGAIN。

Roshar is a world of stone and storms。 Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike。 Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground。 Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter。

It has been centuries since the fall of the ten consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor that transform ordinary men into near-invincible warriors。 Men trade kingdoms for Shardblades。 Wars are fought for them, and won by them。

One such war is about to swallow up a soldier, a brightlord and a young woman scholar。

Widely acclaimed for his work completing Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time saga, Brandon Sanderson now begins a grand cycle of his own, one every bit as ambitious and immersive。

Loved this book! Been a while since I read a fantasy series though, and all the world-building Sanderson focuses on is great and necessary but made some chapters very heavy with info。 Nevertheless so excited to continue this series and see how everything unfolds!

Ich weiß nicht, ob ich dem Buch 3 oder 5 Sterne geben soll 🤯

It took a little bit to get into but once I did。 It was a great read, I would advise anyone reading this to have part two close by though。

I guess this is an unpopular opinion, but。。。 I don't quite get the hype。 I only read the first half though, the German translation is splitted into two books。。 but I have no interest in keeping going。 I don't know。 The story was barely progressing and I just don't care for the characters。 Kaladins story is by far the most interesting but that alone won't make me read the next half。 I'm sorry, I guess it's just not for me, but I'm glad if others find joy in it。 I guess this is an unpopular opinion, but。。。 I don't quite get the hype。 I only read the first half though, the German translation is splitted into two books。。 but I have no interest in keeping going。 I don't know。 The story was barely progressing and I just don't care for the characters。 Kaladins story is by far the most interesting but that alone won't make me read the next half。 I'm sorry, I guess it's just not for me, but I'm glad if others find joy in it。 。。。more

A stunning novel。 Brandon Sanderson is simply a master of his craft。 Kaladin has to be without a doubt one of my favourite characters so far in this series。 Unfortunately, Shallan takes the prize for the least interesting。 Whenever the POV switches back to her, I wish we were back with Kaladin or Dalinar or Adolin。 I love the worldbuilding in this novel。 This world feels very lived in, like it has seen a billion people before our characters were born, and it will see a billion more once the fina A stunning novel。 Brandon Sanderson is simply a master of his craft。 Kaladin has to be without a doubt one of my favourite characters so far in this series。 Unfortunately, Shallan takes the prize for the least interesting。 Whenever the POV switches back to her, I wish we were back with Kaladin or Dalinar or Adolin。 I love the worldbuilding in this novel。 This world feels very lived in, like it has seen a billion people before our characters were born, and it will see a billion more once the final book releases one day in the future。 Everything is so carefully considered and crafted。 I'm honestly envious of Sanderson's genius。Can't wait to pick up the second half!! 。。。more

The book requires a fair deal of patience but is a very promising start of a series。 The patience is needed because it is only the first half of the first book in the series。 Thus, no story arcs are concluded (and there are several of them), and very few questions are answered at the end of the book。 In fact, I left the book with the feeling that the main conflicts of some of the arcs had barely begun。 However, the story that has been told so far is extremely rich。 Sanderson has created a world The book requires a fair deal of patience but is a very promising start of a series。 The patience is needed because it is only the first half of the first book in the series。 Thus, no story arcs are concluded (and there are several of them), and very few questions are answered at the end of the book。 In fact, I left the book with the feeling that the main conflicts of some of the arcs had barely begun。 However, the story that has been told so far is extremely rich。 Sanderson has created a world with its own social norms, its own religious and societal structure, and its own ecology, all full of intriguing details。 He has also set himself up with a great web of characters。 It will be very interesting to see how their storys intertwine。 So the book feels like it builds up a very immersive story of great proportions, and this is why it has me excited for the rest of the series。 。。。more

Completely BLOWN AWAY。The world-building of this book OH MY GOD。 You can feel that there are a hundred-thousand pages of notes that went into building this huge universe that is Roshar。 Epic fantasy at its finest。 I especially loved the craft that went into the characters。 Each of the POV are COMPELLING; the MVPs for me being Dalinar and Adolin。 I have never read such a caring, respectful and complex father/son relationship in modern fantasy (in fantasy at large actually) and it is so refreshing Completely BLOWN AWAY。The world-building of this book OH MY GOD。 You can feel that there are a hundred-thousand pages of notes that went into building this huge universe that is Roshar。 Epic fantasy at its finest。 I especially loved the craft that went into the characters。 Each of the POV are COMPELLING; the MVPs for me being Dalinar and Adolin。 I have never read such a caring, respectful and complex father/son relationship in modern fantasy (in fantasy at large actually) and it is so refreshing to see such a balanced dynamic between a father and his heir。 Their chapters really appealed to me, full of intrigue, plotting and mystery that kept me turning the pages again, and again, and again。I had some issues with Kaladin's chapters at first (I was quite tired of reading about slave stories in fantasy), but the later half of the novel really subverted my expectations towards the character。 His arc might be the most sympathetic of all (even though he kind of has a big saviour complex) and I can't wait to see how his story will clash with the other characters of the Shattered Plains。Thematically, I found this entry into The Stormlight Archive mesmerizing。 Whether it is the themes around religion and beliefs developped by the Shallan/Jasnah storyline, the overall themes of heritage carried by the heavy burden that are the Shards which caused war and conflict in Roshar, AND the questions around history, how you act on it, how you are shaped/destroyed by it, I found that Brandon Sanderson masterfully carried these questions throughout the 600 pages of this novel。I cannot wait to start Part II。 。。。more

This is the second time I've read this book, and I just love it。 The way Sanderson invents such an alien world and alien concepts, with such human struggles, is masterful。 Depictions of mental health struggles in fantasy can be difficult or simplistic, but I think this series does a wonderful job。A lot of the joy of this series I think is in the narration。 Whilst the concept of spren is a lot to get to grips with, it is worth persevering。 There are some twists that the reader doesn't expect, bas This is the second time I've read this book, and I just love it。 The way Sanderson invents such an alien world and alien concepts, with such human struggles, is masterful。 Depictions of mental health struggles in fantasy can be difficult or simplistic, but I think this series does a wonderful job。A lot of the joy of this series I think is in the narration。 Whilst the concept of spren is a lot to get to grips with, it is worth persevering。 There are some twists that the reader doesn't expect, based on how different the world is。 You are lulled into a false sense of familiarity by the down to earth characters, just to have the world shift between your feet。As someone who isn't a huuuuge fan of the 'boys with swords who might commit atrocities in war' genre, the fact that this is one of my favourite books should be a ringing endorsement of Sanderson's wit, empathy and storytelling skill。 。。。more

Maybe around 3。5/3。75 stars?Lower rating might also be due to the exceedingly slow start to this one - which makes sense considering the overall length of the novel, and this is part 1 of 2 - so this rating could easily improve when reading part 2

my first ever high fantasy and i was scared shitless, so i took my pen and notebook and wrote down the most important points of each chapter and the terms and people in the world we’re following。 i think a small part of this made me better follow what was going on, but somehow in the middle of the way i knew who these people were。 i didn’t notice info dumps, so i was surprised by how understandable it all was。 granted that the plot was a tad slow and i was ACHING for the characters to meet, i ac my first ever high fantasy and i was scared shitless, so i took my pen and notebook and wrote down the most important points of each chapter and the terms and people in the world we’re following。 i think a small part of this made me better follow what was going on, but somehow in the middle of the way i knew who these people were。 i didn’t notice info dumps, so i was surprised by how understandable it all was。 granted that the plot was a tad slow and i was ACHING for the characters to meet, i actually enjoyed getting to know them in their own habitats。 oh yeah… Jasnah Kholin? Brandon Sanderson's works have always intrigued me, especially the Stormlight Archive, but their length intimidated me。 So I decided to purchase Part 1 of The Way of Kings to make it more manageable to read and to let me see if I would like it。 And funny enough, I did not actually intend on starting this book when I did。 One day, I jokingly read out the first sentence, which mentions a beast called a "thunderclast。" Little did I know that the following day, all I could think about was "what is a Brandon Sanderson's works have always intrigued me, especially the Stormlight Archive, but their length intimidated me。 So I decided to purchase Part 1 of The Way of Kings to make it more manageable to read and to let me see if I would like it。 And funny enough, I did not actually intend on starting this book when I did。 One day, I jokingly read out the first sentence, which mentions a beast called a "thunderclast。" Little did I know that the following day, all I could think about was "what is a thunderclast anyway?" So I started reading, and now here I am, finally finished, and anxiously waiting to start Part 2。TWoK takes a minute to really get going。 It is separated into multiple acts, dubbed "Parts" along with some sets of Interludes in between them。 "Part One" immediately dumps you into the world with little explanation of some things, and honestly this was really intimidating。 But by the time you get to the first set of Interludes and the start of "Part Two," you have a much better understanding of the world at large and what exactly is going on。Sanderson is incredibly smart with his writing & structure, even if some of it is heavy in exposition。 Personally, I'm not a huge fan of things being overly described because I would rather imagine it all in my head。 But it's not so bad to be a deal breaker or even to take away half a star from my rating。 In fact, the exposition that occurs in the action scenes (which are SO well done and exciting) benefit from it。 So it kinda evens out。After completing Part 1 of TWoK, I see why this series is so popular。 And to be honest, if things continue, I can see this series becoming an all-time favorite of mine。 I can't wait to start Part 2!Sidenote: along with the physical book, I also read along with the audiobook。 This is an unpopular opinion, but I do not like Michael Kramer and Kate Reading's narrations of this book。 It felt too monotone and there was not enough emotion in their voice to match what was going on in my head。 Instead, I am reading along with the Graphic Audio version of the book, and it is proving to be ten times better for me。 So if you do Immersion Reading, consider giving them a try if you are having trouble with the standard audiobook。 。。。more

I don't know why but for some reason in Part 1 of The Way of the Kinds, Dalinar's perspective intrigued me the most。 He was the most frustrating man, but he was also, out of all the character's introduced in this part, the most interesting。 His entire character arc detailed a man who had regrets, loves, and hates, who has experienced war and revelled in it too, but who has grown with that experience and with a terrible plaguing guilt。 There's also much more to him which I'm sure I'll discover when I read Part 2。 I'm also bracing here, for his faith to be displaced in a horrible, horrible way。 I love that in Part 1, Dalinar to me, is like a shell of his former self for most of the people he is aligned with, however, at the same time he is a full man, with a re-sized shell and a new stuffing that others don't understand。 A lot of the characters frustrate me but I can't say I hate them, because even the worst of them are multi-faceted and flawed in the best and worst ways。 It just says how well Sanderson writes, even more so when I find I don't dislike how female characters are portrayed。 I will point out that the Way of Kings has the same problem I sometimes associate with High Fantasy of this particular style - too many men。 And as much I enjoyed the characters, and there is a number of female characters, their limelight is minute in comparison (but this just might be because I've onyl read part 1 and still need to read part 2)。 Sanderson really is a master of High Fantasy and worldbuilding and I have no complaints at all。 I've only read his The Emperor's Soul, but even then I could tell how amazing this man's worldbuilding skills are。 It makes me cry, it's all just so well built。 There's lore, myths, magic, shardplates, fantastical races, and so much more which I'm still wrapping my head around。I'm a little undecided about the writing and not because it's bad! But because it's not beautiful and flowery but rather functional and easy to read。 It flows well, weaving between the character's thoughts and narratives and the action。 It's not dry either, which made it easier to read。 Sanderson also has a way of throwing a whole pile of worldbuilding at you while making it seem so entirely natural。 The moment I began, I was one hundred percent certain I knew what a Shardplate was, but really, I probably didn't understand until halfway。 My only gripe has nothing to do with the story at all but rather with the editions I'm reading from。 I kind of wish I had realised (and had not fallen into cover love) when I bought The Way of Kinds Part 1 that it was literally the first half of the book, and not the whole The Way of Kings。 It would have saved me money。 And I was only a little annoyed I didn't realise beforehand。 But I am a sucker for a good reason, and I did read the afterword, and when Sanderson explained the Way of Kings, and how it came to be two parts, I really couldn't help but forgive him!! I mean, how can one not forgive his reasons。 He'd said something (don't quote me, I've forgotten specifics, without having to look at it again) along the lines of The Way of Kings had been revised from the original, and though he considered shortening it, it would have affected the quality that he wanted so it had to be long。 If the publisher had to split it, he was fine with it, but he got to choose the dividing point。 Overall, I had to stretch the last ten chapters of Part 1 because Part 2 hadn't arrived yet, but yes, it's starting to stress me out and I'm only halfway through! I worry for several characters, and I'm looking forward to reading the next part。 。。。more
