Summary

Kafka wants to clean up kaiju, but not literally! Will a sudden metamorphosis stand in the way of his dream?

With the highest kaiju-emergence rates in the world, Japan is no stranger to attack by deadly monsters。 Enter the Japan Defense Force, a military organization tasked with the neutralization of kaiju。 Kafka Hibino, a kaiju-corpse cleanup man, has always dreamed of joining the force。 But when he gets another shot at achieving his childhood dream, he undergoes an unexpected transformation。 How can he fight kaiju now that he's becomes one himself?!

When the final test of the Defense Force screening exam ends, a mysterious humanoid kaiju revives a neutralized honju and sics it on Kikoru Shinomiya and the rest of the examinees。 Just when Kikoru seems to be at the end of her rope, Kafka rushes to her defense! But who is the humanoid kaiju, and what is their goal?!

I CAN'T EVEN WITH THAT ENDING!!!!!! 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱WOW! What an incredible and impactful volume two!!! I think there are times where readers feel concerned that volume two won't be quite as exciting as volume one, but Kaiju No。 8 does NOT fall into that category! The action kicks right back in (though thankfully we had a little bit of breather in the beginning before things went super intense again) and just leaves you literally on edge and gripping your reading device/paperback! Like, I didn't think that this volume could be even more intense then volume one, but I was definitely wrong there! The stakes are even higher than before and not just in the fight scenes, but Kafka's resolve to truly stand by Mina's side。 I absolutely love their friendship (still SUPER hoping we will get a low key romance!) and just the dynamics of their friendship as a whole。And speaking of friendship, ICHIKAWAAAAAA!! I absolutely LOVE his character, but Kafka seriously was vying for favorite character in this one! The way they push each other, encourage each other, and care for each other is one of the best in newer shonen releases I've seen! I truly cannot get enough of them and just please don't break my heart in the next volume mangaka! Please please please!Lots of continued banter (resulting in me laughing so much that my stomach started hurting LOL) and feel I am still riding on a "book high" after reading this。 All of the characters are absolutely amazing and everyone (including Kafka) is so strong!I am eager (and desperate) for the next volume!! This series continues to be absolutely phenomenal and would still continue to highly recommend!! *(I received an e-ARC from the publisher via NetGalley。 All thoughts expressed are my own。)* 。。。more

I received an eARC of this title through NetGalley in return for an honest review。I feel like this volume really ramps up the stakes and brings to light some great villains。 Kafka and Ichikawa have joined the Japan Defense Force, Kafka more on a probationary role。 With that, Kafka still has to hide his Kaiju form from the rest of his squad。 Although, he has gained a new confidant in the infamous Kikoru, a Kaiju killing prodigy。 However, there is a villain afoot who is causing Kaiju to become mor I received an eARC of this title through NetGalley in return for an honest review。I feel like this volume really ramps up the stakes and brings to light some great villains。 Kafka and Ichikawa have joined the Japan Defense Force, Kafka more on a probationary role。 With that, Kafka still has to hide his Kaiju form from the rest of his squad。 Although, he has gained a new confidant in the infamous Kikoru, a Kaiju killing prodigy。 However, there is a villain afoot who is causing Kaiju to become more powerful, and somehow come back from the dead。 Kafka may be the only one who can stop it, but he can't blow his cover as a normal non-kaiju human。 He is determined to only use his Kaiju ability when absolutely necessary。 I think I enjoyed this volume because Kafka is determined to show he is useful by going through kaiju on the battlefield and helping his teammates learn more about their enemy in the moment。 I think this is something logical that the Defense Force never considered。 I recommend keeping up with this series。 I think it has the potential to not only be a good manga, but a good anime。 。。。more

This series is easily one of my favorite new discoveries。 Kafka Hibino dreamed of joining the Japan Defense Force and eliminating kaiju that threaten the country。 However, he finds himself as a lowly clean-up crewman, removing kaiju corpses while his childhood best friend lives their dream of being the country's savior。 He's given a second chance to try and join the military group and climb their ranks, but has to deal with having kaiju powers himself。 In this volume we meet more of the current This series is easily one of my favorite new discoveries。 Kafka Hibino dreamed of joining the Japan Defense Force and eliminating kaiju that threaten the country。 However, he finds himself as a lowly clean-up crewman, removing kaiju corpses while his childhood best friend lives their dream of being the country's savior。 He's given a second chance to try and join the military group and climb their ranks, but has to deal with having kaiju powers himself。 In this volume we meet more of the current crop of trainees hoping to make it through J。D。F。 training and see them all score higher than Kafka in just about every metric。 He doesn't give up and his new friend Ichikawa does what he can to try and help。 Kikoru knows his secret now too, but he saved her life so she's willing to keep it - for now。 We learn a little about how strong Kafka really is, even if he doesn't know himself and we find out humanoid-kaiju are going to be a problem。 A wholly satisfying follow up to a strong opening volume。 New character introductions were welcome and well done in the greater world being built。 I'm interested in where this is going and invested in the characters, so Naoya Matsumoto is doing great work there。 This is fun and funny while still feeling like there are stakes。 I really like the art as well, it doesn't slouch, but also isn't so busy that your eye doesn't know where to go。 Highly recommend this series。 。。。more

Can I scream?! Because I want to scream so bad! This is topnotch and I freaking hate myself that I just only decided to read it today!! I've been seeing it a lot on Shueisha and don't even pay attention to it! Gah! I hate myself! But I'm so glad I picked it up today!! Finally! I feel bad I wanted to enjoy this。 It's a cool premise, I like the art style and also what they're doing with shounen jump plus (I've gotta read into that a bit more)。 I feel like this is kind of a mean thing to say but for some reason to me whenever I try to consume any shounen manga it's all really just felt the same to me recently。 Which is weird cause shounen is geared at teen boys and well I'm a teen boy。 I guess I just don't want to currently read about dudes punching other dudes really re I feel bad I wanted to enjoy this。 It's a cool premise, I like the art style and also what they're doing with shounen jump plus (I've gotta read into that a bit more)。 I feel like this is kind of a mean thing to say but for some reason to me whenever I try to consume any shounen manga it's all really just felt the same to me recently。 Which is weird cause shounen is geared at teen boys and well I'm a teen boy。 I guess I just don't want to currently read about dudes punching other dudes really really hard。 This manga is great don't let my thoughts get in the way of that if you like shounen/this looks good to you please go read it, it's just not for me at least right now。 Maybe if this ever gets an anime adaptation (which hopefully it does) I"ll give the anime a try! 。。。more

It's still dominated by male protagonists but i love how the two most badass people are women。 Kinda like how a lot of the characters are older too。It's funny and so incredibly cuteeee jssjsh really appreciate the little indications of a character's hidden thoughts and feelings, it makes them more likeable and less monodimensional。I adore the art style and the design of characters。 It's still dominated by male protagonists but i love how the two most badass people are women。 Kinda like how a lot of the characters are older too。It's funny and so incredibly cuteeee jssjsh really appreciate the little indications of a character's hidden thoughts and feelings, it makes them more likeable and less monodimensional。I adore the art style and the design of characters。 。。。more

。。。more

8/10 starsStill good, still highly enjoyable, and having found its groove it admirably keeps to it。 Sure, this volume has a lot of academia vibes to it, with cadets/troopers trying their best at various forms of one-upmanship, bonding in sauna sittings and so on, but it's also about Kafka (man, I bet Matsumoto has read Franz Kafka's short story, The Metamorphosis, and the protagonist's name is a twisted tribute to the author of The Trial) finding his own place among people who seem to be much mo 8/10 starsStill good, still highly enjoyable, and having found its groove it admirably keeps to it。 Sure, this volume has a lot of academia vibes to it, with cadets/troopers trying their best at various forms of one-upmanship, bonding in sauna sittings and so on, but it's also about Kafka (man, I bet Matsumoto has read Franz Kafka's short story, The Metamorphosis, and the protagonist's name is a twisted tribute to the author of The Trial) finding his own place among people who seem to be much more talented - and younger - than him。 Life experience matters! It's a lot of fun to see an older shonen protagonist。 I really appreciate the humor here, showcased in scenes where Kafka feels too old, inadequate and overwhelmed by a bunch of teenagers, realizing he will never be able to compete with them physically, but at the same time he slowly begins to understand that he can contribute in other ways, his experience and knowledge as valuable as the youngsters' energy and fitness。 The plot thickens! 。。。more
