If only every successful fiction writer would publish a book of their life around writing (and most of the best of them have I suppose), then we’d all be a lot better at focusing and getting some words down。 They would all give us the same disclaimer though - that it really does all come down to the individual in terms of desire and capacity for reading and writing in general etc。 I enjoyed everything that Stephen King had to say about his tendencies toward descriptive writing, dialogue, draftin If only every successful fiction writer would publish a book of their life around writing (and most of the best of them have I suppose), then we’d all be a lot better at focusing and getting some words down。 They would all give us the same disclaimer though - that it really does all come down to the individual in terms of desire and capacity for reading and writing in general etc。 I enjoyed everything that Stephen King had to say about his tendencies toward descriptive writing, dialogue, drafting (door shut, door open - great concept), grammar, symbolism, and theme, to name a few。 Even though the book can seem a bit disjointed in its flow, I found each part of the book enjoyable (the actual memoir, the ‘toolbox’ of mandatory writers skills, and the tips for writing) and that any bad review here is pretty harsh - he does explain that he had the first draft in a drawer for months and was brutally run down by a van and had to figure out whether or not he could write again。 So he done not bad。 。。。more

I enjoyed this, though I wish there wasn't so much profanity。 My favorite parts were Mr。 King's stories of his own life and how that influenced his writing。 His writing advice is mostly sound, though I disagree with a few things。 I enjoyed this, though I wish there wasn't so much profanity。 My favorite parts were Mr。 King's stories of his own life and how that influenced his writing。 His writing advice is mostly sound, though I disagree with a few things。 。。。more

This is an amazing book that I am definitely going to have to re-read, multiple times, to fully appreciate。 The autobiographical portion of 'On Writing' is almost impossible to put down and the technical portions of this book are gems。 This is an amazing book that I am definitely going to have to re-read, multiple times, to fully appreciate。 The autobiographical portion of 'On Writing' is almost impossible to put down and the technical portions of this book are gems。 。。。more

This is a great manual for the layman writer。 I guess I came to it hoping for something different—maybe anecdotes and examples of how he wrote some of his novels, what he learned through each。 Two standout aspects of what he did provide here: the importance of a solid relationship, and the joy that writing can bring。 I’ve never much subscribed to the idea of the tortured artist, and King clearly repudiates it。

If you like your craft books served up memoir style, this is the one for you。 I found his perspective to be limited at times, to the scope of his own reality, role, and experiences, but in knowing that, I left the "advice" that didn't apply, and absorbed the rest, which was most of the book。 He confirmed what I already intuitively believe to be true about great storytelling and writing, and I loved learning about his history and what shaped his relationships, process, and career。 This is a book If you like your craft books served up memoir style, this is the one for you。 I found his perspective to be limited at times, to the scope of his own reality, role, and experiences, but in knowing that, I left the "advice" that didn't apply, and absorbed the rest, which was most of the book。 He confirmed what I already intuitively believe to be true about great storytelling and writing, and I loved learning about his history and what shaped his relationships, process, and career。 This is a book I will revisit often。 I also encourage anyone to listen to it on audio。 I did a split read and really enjoyed hearing King narrate。 Two of my favorite quotes, going up on the wall: "One word at a time" and "What you know is what makes you unique。" If you're writing fiction, you definitely want to add 'On Writing' to your shelf。 。。。more

Stephen King's On Writing really gives it to you straight about the craft of writing: You're either good or bad at it; if you're in the middle, you might be able to work on it and get somewhere。 As for everyone who aspires to write a novel and eventually publish their work, the reality is, it ain't easy。 Failures will start to form on a foundation, upon which you thought you would be able to build a home, that is, your novel or any long piece of writing。 But nothing goes as planned and it never Stephen King's On Writing really gives it to you straight about the craft of writing: You're either good or bad at it; if you're in the middle, you might be able to work on it and get somewhere。 As for everyone who aspires to write a novel and eventually publish their work, the reality is, it ain't easy。 Failures will start to form on a foundation, upon which you thought you would be able to build a home, that is, your novel or any long piece of writing。 But nothing goes as planned and it never meets the standards of inspection。 At least, the saving grace here is that it was only the beginning and not the actual structure。 That would delay things and cause damage, a do-over ,unlike anything else。 There's always the scenario of it being worse than ever which would see you build the whole entire house; it looks nice on the outside (the cover book) but inside (the written word) is a whole kind of messy that needs a whole lotta editing。 Nothing is that bleak, though。 A sense of hope to pull through, to build, to use you're "tool box" as King said, would, in many cases, deter you from bad bad writing。 I'm certainly working on it, everyone does--even King himself! In a sense you're the builder, inspector and the labourer and it's best they communicate with each other。 The more you do, the reward is seeing someone sit in that home and be comfortable, sitting beside their fireplace, feeling warm, drinking their tea and experiencing a sense of mirth inside。 That person inside, let's not forget, is you too。 Besides, the learning that I gained from Stephen King while reading the book, I, equally, learned about his life。 His life wasn't easy, but in life his inspirations led him to love writing。 As with life and all that comes with it, mingled with inspiration and experience, his stories came to life。 But he followed rules and rules of writing are things that we need to abide by, whether we like them or not。 Certainly, rules can be broken, there are exceptions; but let's not break 'em enough to lose our place during the process。 A compass isn't always given。 And we should not be on our high horses。 Humility in the process is what's needed。 To follow through to the end of a sentence, is precious, it's a crown。 And we must be thankful but not so much that the authority we give it, is never questioned。 That's where we edit, think logically, and prescribe a remedy to our writing。 King also said to read and write, read and write。 Nothing is worse than that, but I wouldn't bet against Stephen King to make a horror story out of it。 。。。more

One part memoir, one part writing advice。 Stephen King narrates the audiobook version, so I will highly recommend listening to it as I did。 His writing advice is sound。 He doesn't try to make sweeping generalizations or say there is a science that will make you an amazing writer。 His recipe includes two things: read a lot, and write a lot。 I enjoyed this immensely。 I will recommend it even to people who don't want to be a creative writer。 One part memoir, one part writing advice。 Stephen King narrates the audiobook version, so I will highly recommend listening to it as I did。 His writing advice is sound。 He doesn't try to make sweeping generalizations or say there is a science that will make you an amazing writer。 His recipe includes two things: read a lot, and write a lot。 I enjoyed this immensely。 I will recommend it even to people who don't want to be a creative writer。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Una buena guía para los que aspiramos a escribir。 El único punto que consideré cuestionable es el hecho de que Stephen menciona y pone como ejemplo sus demás obras, suponiendo que el lector las conoce todas, cosa que hostiga y, de cierta manera, hace verse petulante。Sin embargo, todos sus consejos son esclarecedores y tal ves, viniendo de un escritor best seller, poco puedas poner en duda。Además es interesante conocer de su propia mano su historia。

Stephen King wrote a book for aspiring and struggling writers but I believe he managed something larger。 A book that is as much about the symbiotic relationship between a well lived life and settled work, as it is about writing。 The key being that when you design your life to support positive habit building, you will create the space to hone your craft of choice, which naturally feeds satisfaction back into life。 To serve writers, he delivers blunt guidance that demystifies the lore of what make Stephen King wrote a book for aspiring and struggling writers but I believe he managed something larger。 A book that is as much about the symbiotic relationship between a well lived life and settled work, as it is about writing。 The key being that when you design your life to support positive habit building, you will create the space to hone your craft of choice, which naturally feeds satisfaction back into life。 To serve writers, he delivers blunt guidance that demystifies the lore of what makes a successful writer。 One of the most important bubbles he pops is the idea that creative output comes to us like some violent gust of wind。 Inspiration that is supposed to consume you and carry you all the way to some brilliant novel。 King distills the real effort down to a craftsperson, discipline, and a toolbox。 On top of all of that he shares his life journey in away that is refreshing。 This approach underscores how are lives shape us and subsequently what we write about。 It’s not just about writing what we know but also leaning into your history to give your work more authenticity。 An honesty that the reader will appreciate。 Whether you’re a King fan or not, this is a great read about following passions and making a life。 。。。more

The best book on writing, particularly fiction writing, that there ever will be。 Truthfully, there's really little I can say more about this book, other than this: Stephen King gets it。 As a writer, I know that writing is more than just slapping words down on a page。 It's more than just elaborating on an outline。 It's an art, and it's brutal and experiential and transcendent all at once。 And he gets that, more than anyone else I've ever heard talk about writing。 The best book on writing, particularly fiction writing, that there ever will be。 Truthfully, there's really little I can say more about this book, other than this: Stephen King gets it。 As a writer, I know that writing is more than just slapping words down on a page。 It's more than just elaborating on an outline。 It's an art, and it's brutal and experiential and transcendent all at once。 And he gets that, more than anyone else I've ever heard talk about writing。 。。。more

A fantastic memoir and insight on the craft。 This is the first book I’ve read by Stephen King and I did not realize how much I would come to respect him by the end of it。 I don’t read non-fiction often, but I couldn’t put this one down。 Would highly recommend!
