I have follow-up questions。 I was continually bogged down with the time travel logic。 It also appeared that every year lived was set in stone。。。she couldn't change the outcome。。。so how is that living in the moment? I found that very frustrating。 Also。。。。the mom who wouldn't tell her what would happen because it might spoil the surprise。。。are you kidding。。。you tell me right now。 I slogged it out to the end。 I would recommend Invisible Life of Addie LaRue or the Time Travelers Wife as much better I have follow-up questions。 I was continually bogged down with the time travel logic。 It also appeared that every year lived was set in stone。。。she couldn't change the outcome。。。so how is that living in the moment? Overall pretty good。 I could not figure out the whole timeline situation。 Time was non-linear but also definite?? It didn’t really make sense until there were two consecutive years。 I also saw the twist coming really early on so it didn’t have the shock factor。

I loved this book! It is so original and it has moments that are funny and bittersweet。 A really unique read!

I started listening to the audio book of this one after several friends recommended it。 However, I really couldn't connect with Oona as a character, and I didn't find myself interested in (or sympathetic to) her time jumps。 I ended up not finishing it。 I think I may have been more engaged if there was a longer set up before her first time jump。 I'm not sure if I will try to read or listen to this book, again。 It just didn't grab me, but I may try it again when I am in a different reading mood。 I started listening to the audio book of this one after several friends recommended it。 However, I really couldn't connect with Oona as a character, and I didn't find myself interested in (or sympathetic to) her time jumps。 I ended up not finishing it。 I think I may have been more engaged if there was a longer set up before her first time jump。 I'm not sure if I will try to read or listen to this book, again。 It just didn't grab me, but I may try it again when I am in a different reading mood。 。。。more

What If You Could Change Your Life's Trajectory? This was a fun novel, but also got pretty intense。 We've all looked back at times and imagined, " what it's" in our lives。 Due to Oona's strange disease of jumping forward and backwards, every December 31st she discovers her future and past。 I tried to analyze this story logistically when I should have just gone with it。 "Oona would always try to create continuity and meaning in her life—she couldn’t help it—but she’d also seize these moments of ha What If You Could Change Your Life's Trajectory? This was a fun novel, but also got pretty intense。 We've all looked back at times and imagined, " what it's" in our lives。 Due to Oona's strange disease of jumping forward and backwards, every December 31st she discovers her future and past。 I tried to analyze this story logistically when I should have just gone with it。 "Oona would always try to create continuity and meaning in her life—she couldn’t help it—but she’d also seize these moments of happiness and relish them。 Whichever way the years flowed, it was impossible to outmaneuver their passage。 Even chronology doesn’t guarantee security。 All good things ended, always。 The trick was to enjoy them while they lasted。 Oona was still learning。" Perfect excerpt from an interesting novel。 。。。more

Eh。 2。5 rounded up。 I kept wondering。。。does her mother (and others who know) start each New Year with "Oona, is that you? Are you the real Oona?" At first I tried to keep the rules of Monitmore's made-up time traveling world straight so I could keep track of the story, but it soon became clear that it simply wasn't worth the effort。 At first I tried to keep the rules of Monitmore's made-up time traveling world straight so I could keep track of the story, but it soon became clear that it simply wasn't worth the effort。 。。。more

I love these kinds of novels because they mess with time。 I like how it forces you to think about life and relationships differently。 The author weaves together a neat story。 But some of the character’s choices (drugs, sex, divorce, etc。。。) and the agenda at the end of the book for accepting gay lifestyles made it hard to give this a top rating。

Emily Wiebold

I enjoyed the ride of this book! Witty and so cleverly written。

I’m a sucker for a unique premise。 To enjoy it you must ignore the impulse to question the narrative; once you do it’s a neat ride。

There is part of me that wants to hold back and not give this book a full five stars, but honestly, it checked all the boxes and more。 Montimore is an incredibly skilled writer - she has a knack for using just enough detail without unnecessarily showy prose。 Plus, combining elements of sci-fi (time travel) with music as a key focus made my nerd heart squeal with joy。I think I’d have loved this book even if it weren’t out of order - Oona’s character is well-developed and the details of her antics There is part of me that wants to hold back and not give this book a full five stars, but honestly, it checked all the boxes and more。 Montimore is an incredibly skilled writer - she has a knack for using just enough detail without unnecessarily showy prose。 Plus, combining elements of sci-fi (time travel) with music as a key focus made my nerd heart squeal with joy。I think I’d have loved this book even if it weren’t out of order - Oona’s character is well-developed and the details of her antics had me utterly captivated。And, of course, there’s a deeper message conveyed - this book broaches gratitude and mindfulness in authentic non-new agey ways。 Montimore artfully addresses the subtle balance between enjoying life’s pleasures and indulging in them as a means to escape as well as the balance between creating a meaningful life with purpose and simply enjoying it。Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book from the mind-bending time travel aspect to the subtle yet profound wisdom woven throughout。 “You need to let the bad shit happen and stop trying to undo it。” So, five freaking stars。 Can’t wait to read Montimore’s other work and not-so-subtly crossing my fingers and wishing on stars that she writes more。 。。。more

Kind of a slow start。 But I feel that way about most books I’ve learned。 Just building the story。 As it went on and began to make more sense I truly enjoyed it! I loved seeing the characters through different phases of life。 At times it got a tad confusing, as to what the surrounding/supporting characters knew from one time to the next。 But over all it was a great read! And left me thinking “wait no, it’s not over” not that it wasn’t a good ending, I just wanted more of the story and the entire Kind of a slow start。 But I feel that way about most books I’ve learned。 Just building the story。 As it went on and began to make more sense I truly enjoyed it! I have to confess that I picked up this book not knowing what is was about -- the cover seemed appealing enough -- but was pleasantly surprised in the end。 This is the gist of it, found in Chapter 3:"Every year, on your birthday, right at midnight, you travel through time to inhabit your body at a different point of your life。 For exactly one year。 Then you "leap" to another random age you haven't lived before (could be older, could be younger)。 You're physically and mentally healthy, but you're I have to confess that I picked up this book not knowing what is was about -- the cover seemed appealing enough -- but was pleasantly surprised in the end。 This is the gist of it, found in Chapter 3:"Every year, on your birthday, right at midnight, you travel through time to inhabit your body at a different point of your life。 For exactly one year。 Then you "leap" to another random age you haven't lived before (could be older, could be younger)。 You're physically and mentally healthy, but you're experiencing your adult life out of order。" 。。。。Hence the title of the book。 。。。more

The premise of this book is preposterous。 It’s hard to even suspend belief long enough to make it through。 That being said, I didn’t hate it。 It’s a light, easy read that actually gives you a lot to think about。 If you knew how your life would turn out, would you try and change things as you go or just experience your life as it unfolds?

Megan

I wanted this to be another couple hundred pages longer! Loved it!

Chelsie Ofsthun

I liked the concept。 But。。。 The characters seemed lacking。 Also, 1991 seemed unnecessary & maybe not in line with the character。。。 and seems weird then that 1990 Oona would have s participated in activities that lets up to that year seeing as the age she revisited would have held her older and wiser。 Meh。 Decently quick read with some cool ideas but the lack of character development and reality left me a bit disengaged。

Marci

I didn’t want this book to end! So much life still to live! This is such a creative, unique book, and the choreography of it was impressive。 So fun to read。 Perhaps a little too overt in getting the year/setting right each jump, with tons of name dropping。 But that just became part of the endearing quirkiness。 A little warning, though , it’s not PG-rated, but maybe PG-13。

AJ Kelley

I loved this book! I wish I could read more!

Outstanding and thought-provoking。 Really made me think of leaping to different eras of my life。

We are introduced to Oona as a 18 year old in 1982。 She’s scared and shocked to find out on New Year’s Day and her birthday that she’s suddenly in the body of herself, but in her fifties in 2015! She learns that she lives her adult life out of order and tries to put this and herself all together by learning hope to cope and live like this。 This was a fascinating read and I definitely recommend。

Fell short。 Great story idea but just not done well。 I kept wanting to know why she time traveled。 I kept waiting for more。

Oona is living her life out of order。 Every New Year, which is her birthday, she finds herself in a different year of her life。 She could wake up younger or older than her real chronological year。 She must live that year the best she can knowing it will be over soon and into another year of no particular order。 She tries to determine if she can change her life knowing what is ahead as she tries to embrace life knowing certain people may or may not be with her the next year。 I gave up trying to f Oona is living her life out of order。 Every New Year, which is her birthday, she finds herself in a different year of her life。 She could wake up younger or older than her real chronological year。 She must live that year the best she can knowing it will be over soon and into another year of no particular order。 She tries to determine if she can change her life knowing what is ahead as she tries to embrace life knowing certain people may or may not be with her the next year。 I gave up trying to figure out how this time travel worked and read it in the moment。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Interesting concept, keeps you wondering the whole book。 It’s fun to fall in and out of love with her and to try and figure things out as she is。 I wish it would go through her whole life, maybe just glimpses into some years。 Once I realized it wouldn’t do that I couldn’t imagine liking the ending and thought I’d be disappointed。 I wasn’t, but I would have enjoyed seeing how everything fit together in her life。
