A mouse is a mouse and a stick insect is a stick insect。 However, a cat is not a squirrel 。 。 。 and cats eat mice。 Rescue comes from an unexpected source with an equally unexpected solution。 Mina is a wise little mouse。 Simple, concise text with beautiful, detailed, colorful, and often humorous illustrations。 There is much to explore in each illustration。 For preschool through 2nd grade。

What a weird story。 The illustrations are pretty, but nothing earth-shattering。 The text is fine, but the premise is just bizarre。 I'm not a fan of stories that make it look charming and eccentric when incompetent adults endanger their children by being blithe and careless (and I really dislike the way it ends by saying Mina's dad was right, after he spent the book dismissing Mina's concerns for their safety。 Totally undermines any kind of empowering message that might have otherwise have salvag What a weird story。 The illustrations are pretty, but nothing earth-shattering。 The text is fine, but the premise is just bizarre。 I'm not a fan of stories that make it look charming and eccentric when incompetent adults endanger their children by being blithe and careless (and I really dislike the way it ends by saying Mina's dad was right, after he spent the book dismissing Mina's concerns for their safety。 Totally undermines any kind of empowering message that might have otherwise have salvaged the book)。 I also don't like the representation of cats as cold and heartless, given how many people really believe that cats are like that。 Basically everything about this book was a major miss for me。 。。。more

By the author of "Pokko and her Drum", this is very similar in art style, setting, off beat storyline, and clueless parent。 So if you liked Pokko, you'll like this one, too。 But I liked the empowerment message of Pokko better than this story。 By the author of "Pokko and her Drum", this is very similar in art style, setting, off beat storyline, and clueless parent。 So if you liked Pokko, you'll like this one, too。 But I liked the empowerment message of Pokko better than this story。 。。。more

The illustrations are glorious。 Five star worthy。 This is a spin off of sorts of Matthew Forsythe's Pokko and the Drum。 Another beauty of a picture book。 But you may want to come up with your own tale when reading Mina to a child。 Mina started out promising but went nowhere-pretty quickly。 Completely disappointing since there was so much potential。 The dad is quirky and fun。 The character of Mina could have really taken off but it falls flat。 More time needed to be devoted to the words。 The illustrations are glorious。 Five star worthy。 This is a spin off of sorts of Matthew Forsythe's Pokko and the Drum。 Another beauty of a picture book。 But you may want to come up with your own tale when reading Mina to a child。 Mina started out promising but went nowhere-pretty quickly。 Completely disappointing since there was so much potential。 The dad is quirky and fun。 The character of Mina could have really taken off but it falls flat。 More time needed to be devoted to the words。 。。。more

4 stars for this picture book that clearly conveys Mina's annoyance by her father's need to bring home inappropriate things/animals with unexpected consequences。 4 stars for this picture book that clearly conveys Mina's annoyance by her father's need to bring home inappropriate things/animals with unexpected consequences。 。。。more

Flawless illustrations。 Mina is a mouse whose very optimistic father brings home “gifts” from the outside world。

A cute story, love the illustrations。 Could work in storytime, but the story didn't feel very engaging。 A cute story, love the illustrations。 Could work in storytime, but the story didn't feel very engaging。 。。。more

Mina's father loves to surprise Mina with things from the outside world。 One day he bring home a "Squirrel" which is actually a cat! Cute story。 Mina's father loves to surprise Mina with things from the outside world。 One day he bring home a "Squirrel" which is actually a cat! Cute story。 。。。more

Mina and her father are both mice。 And she generally manages to put up with all of his shenanigans, as he brings home all manner of eccentric junk and strange characters (including a group of stick insects that stole all of Mina's books!)。 But, everything is different when he brings home a squirrel。 Except it's not a squirrel--it's clearly a cat。 And strangely enough, the "squirrel" is not eating the acorns they try to feed it。 So, Mina's dad brings home two more。。。and well, you can imagine what Mina and her father are both mice。 And she generally manages to put up with all of his shenanigans, as he brings home all manner of eccentric junk and strange characters (including a group of stick insects that stole all of Mina's books!)。 But, everything is different when he brings home a squirrel。 Except it's not a squirrel--it's clearly a cat。 And strangely enough, the "squirrel" is not eating the acorns they try to feed it。 So, Mina's dad brings home two more。。。and well, you can imagine what happens next。This book was really cute, the illustrations were delightful, and it made me smile。 I would definitely recommend。 。。。more

Not as good as Pokko and the Drum which is one of my all-time-favorites。 The illustration style is gorgeous and one of my favorites, but the story is a little weird。

A great picture book that is about trust and overcoming fear。

While at work, I take a moment every now and then to read one of the children's books that comes through, usually because the art interests me。 Sometimes you find a gem like this one: adorable, hilarious and with gorgeous illustrations。 With its vibrant, warm colors and generally relaxed atmosphere, it's a delightful cozy read for kids。 While at work, I take a moment every now and then to read one of the children's books that comes through, usually because the art interests me。 Sometimes you find a gem like this one: adorable, hilarious and with gorgeous illustrations。 With its vibrant, warm colors and generally relaxed atmosphere, it's a delightful cozy read for kids。 。。。more

I really don't get the buzz。 Also has an adults are right even when they're wrong undercurrent that isn't sitting well with me。 I really don't get the buzz。 Also has an adults are right even when they're wrong undercurrent that isn't sitting well with me。 。。。more

In a way, you have the typical "Disney dad" in that he's quite silly/not so smart or practical。 (Think Aladdin, Beauty & the Beast, etc。)Mina just wants to read and accommodates all her dad's quirks, but isn't sure when he brings home what he is POSITIVE is a squirrel。 Readers will know different。The end of the story reminds me a bit of story that a kid would tell。 In a way, you have the typical "Disney dad" in that he's quite silly/not so smart or practical。 (Think Aladdin, Beauty & the Beast, etc。)Mina just wants to read and accommodates all her dad's quirks, but isn't sure when he brings home what he is POSITIVE is a squirrel。 Readers will know different。The end of the story reminds me a bit of story that a kid would tell。 。。。more

Mina mouse enjoys the quieter side of life。 She prefers a good book in a cozy corner while her father is always up to something a little more adventurous such as bringing home musicians he'd met in the forest, telling amplified dad jokes, or collecting and displaying art。 Mina is usually only a little inconvenienced by her father's interests until the day he brings home a cat! Warm and fuzzy pastel illustrations and pacing perfect for reading aloud make this a favorite in the new year。 Mina mouse enjoys the quieter side of life。 She prefers a good book in a cozy corner while her father is always up to something a little more adventurous such as bringing home musicians he'd met in the forest, telling amplified dad jokes, or collecting and displaying art。 Mina is usually only a little inconvenienced by her father's interests until the day he brings home a cat! I did not see any of the twists in this plot。 And I loved them! A pleasant, surprising tale with subtle dialogue and wonderfully suggestive pictures (the eyes especially signal so much of the story here)!
