The series finally takes the time to kick things up a notch and show some much more intense backstory to show how Hayate became a hero and it's not as fluffy as one would think。 The series is slowly increasing the drama and is better off because of it。 The series finally takes the time to kick things up a notch and show some much more intense backstory to show how Hayate became a hero and it's not as fluffy as one would think。 The series is slowly increasing the drama and is better off because of it。 。。。more

Despite my feelings about the last volume I did decide to continue on with this series, and this was a fun one。 Opened with some fanservice at a water park and then transitioned into more serious character stuff。 Actually, aside from a few meta jokes this was overall the most serious volume of this series so far。 And some actual relationship progression - yay! (No kisses yet though。。。)

Honey Trap and Rapid Rabbit face off with their foes at… the beach? Then X, the supreme leader of the whatever group, pounds our heroes into stuffing and forces Honey to make a difficult choice。 Then the art implodes on itself, as tends to happen。It probably says everything that the beach goofing around part that leads this book is arguably the best part of it。 Since the story only fitfully takes itself seriously, it isn’t too surprising that when it drops the pretences it gets more enjoyable。Th Honey Trap and Rapid Rabbit face off with their foes at… the beach? Then X, the supreme leader of the whatever group, pounds our heroes into stuffing and forces Honey to make a difficult choice。 Then the art implodes on itself, as tends to happen。It probably says everything that the beach goofing around part that leads this book is arguably the best part of it。 Since the story only fitfully takes itself seriously, it isn’t too surprising that when it drops the pretences it gets more enjoyable。This also shows off the mangaka’s strengths - drawing attractive women in bikinis。 They’re clearly having a field day here, as evidenced by the return of one of the weirdest panel choices I see in manga - the Talking Crotch (I have to assume this is shown in Honey’s thirsty vision)。Still, this is pretty funny and the women all cross-flirting and sniping at each other (save Cool, who is 100% the audience surrogate writ large) and just getting along out of uniform is a nice diversion。 Monster maker Kyoka and Rapid Rabbit have a very odd friendship developing that I liked。The other good sequence comes during a flashback to Rabbit’s initial foray in her superhero form。 In addition to the amusing way she ended up with her name, there’s a surprisingly tragic lesson about not being able to save everybody。 It might be a little over the top, but better to try too much than too little。The other big plot thrust here is when X attacks and forces Honey to rejoin team evil and that is pretty, well, dull。 X has the whole jilted lover thing going on, where she’s yearning for the Honey of old, not realizing that she’s not that person any more。 In another story, where your villain is not an overlord in the form of a petulant schoolgirl, this could probably lead somewhere。Here, however, it doesn’t work whatsoever because this series has never convincingly sold the Honey and Rabbit pairing as much of anything except thirsty business。 Which, hey, relationships have been built on less, but Rabbit’s sudden shift from basic ignorance of this being more than a friendship to total romantic acceptance feels like somebody went and flipped her switch from ‘not yuri’ to ‘yuri’。And then you match that up with the action sequences, which are a lot of attack yelling and slashes and crosses and very little by way of actual choreography and it just doesn’t land at all。 The art can only do one thing especially well and unfortunately a significant chunk of the story focuses on what it does not。Outside of the yuri angle, literally all of the clever bits and frenemies stuff is being done about a hundred times better over in Love After World Domination。 That story had a recent issue with gay panic, but it’s minor enough that it still outshines this so hard。2。5 stars - nudged up because it was better than last time by a smidgen。 I’ll get another volume because maybe the relationship escalation will be the change that this story needs, but as my manga card fills up and I look at series to drop, this one is definitely heading onto the bubble。 。。。more

The next volume in this hilarious, cute, and action-packed series! There is a cute swimming pool date (rip X who got tricked), we learn of Hayate's backstory on how she turned to a hero (which made me sad), and then there is an epic battle of emotions and feelings between Hayate + Honey x X。 Things are going to get heated and OH BOY I was there for it。 It was well written and I loved what happened between Hayate and Honey。 Finally Hayate is realising things!
