Summary

Sebin, a young tiger spirit from the Juhwang Clan, wants nothing more than to join the Thousand World Space Forces and, like their Uncle Hwan, captain a battle cruiser someday。 But when Sebin's acceptance letter finally arrives, it's accompanied by the shocking news that Hwan has been declared a traitor。 Apparently, the captain abandoned his duty to steal a magical artifact, the Dragon Pearl, and his whereabouts are still unknown。 Sebin hopes to help clear their hero's name and restore honour to the clan。

Nothing goes according to plan, however。 As soon as Sebin arrives for orientation, they are met by a special investigator named Yi and his assistant, a girl named Min。 Yi informs Sebin that they must immediately report to the ship Haetae and await further instructions。 Sebin finds this highly unusual, but soon all protocol is forgotten when there's an explosion on the ship, the crew is knocked out, and the communication system goes down。 It's up to Sebin, three other cadets, and Yi and Min to determine who is sabotaging the battlecruiser。 When Sebin is suddenly accused of collaborating with the enemy, the cadet realizes that Min is the most dangerous foe of all。。。

I love the author and their fiction is brilliant; this sequel is no exception。 Note that this book is more on the 8 year old side of the 8-12 range that the Rick Riordan Presents imprint: think more Warrior Cats and less Tristan Strong。

A fitting sequel and I hope there’s plenty more in this world

I am always in awe of the sheer talent of the Rick Riordan Presents lineup。 TIGER HONOR is an incredible feat of imagination and complexity that never underestimates its readers, and I'm hungry for more upper-MG science fiction in this vein! I should preface by saying that I haven't read DRAGON PEARL before, but Yoon Ha Lee's second installment stands alone very well。 I realized I was missing some context regarding Min & Hwan's history, but overall, this book does an excellent job of contextuali I am always in awe of the sheer talent of the Rick Riordan Presents lineup。 TIGER HONOR is an incredible feat of imagination and complexity that never underestimates its readers, and I'm hungry for more upper-MG science fiction in this vein! I should preface by saying that I haven't read DRAGON PEARL before, but Yoon Ha Lee's second installment stands alone very well。 I realized I was missing some context regarding Min & Hwan's history, but overall, this book does an excellent job of contextualizing everything for newcomers。 And what a world it is! We've got giant space ships and tiger spirits and gumiho and ghosts and so much more, and I was starry-eyed taking it all in! Weirdly, the expansiveness of the world was also one of its weaknesses。 Despite seeing the tiger compound and starports in earlier chapters, the vast majority of the story takes place on a hijacked ship。 There's (supposedly) a lot at stake, with mentions of this planet-altering Dragon Pearl, but we don't see/feel any of it; the hijackers' plan felt kinda nebulous, as did the loyalties involved, and I struggled to connect。 It should've been an urgent book。 But I never felt that urgency。 I wanted off the ship, but instead we got almost an entire novel of stealthily playing cat-and-mouse inside a vacuum。 The writing itself was occasionally difficult to connect to, too。 While I loved the complexity, it was also DENSE for middle grade, and Sebin's voice wasn't always engaging。 I don't know。 Nobody quite felt real, and in a plot that heavily relies on the drama of shifting loyalties, it was tricky to care when those loyalties came across as quite dry & manufactured。 I'm just a little unconvinced that this was the best story to tell, given the potential of the Thousand Worlds! HOWEVER, there's still lots to love about TIGER HONOR。 The wider worldbuilding, obviously, but also the casual nonbinary rep (like, SO many characters used they/them pronouns!) and themes of courage & honor。 it won't be going on my favorites list, but I'm nevertheless glad I got the opportunity to read。 。。。more

It took a bit longer to get into this book compared to Dragon Pearl, but the pace did pick up mid-way though the book。 Once again, the world-building in this book is just phenomenal。 I hope to get to see these characters again!

I really enjoyed reading this book! I actually went and read the first book before this one, and really liked how the stories are connected yet can stand alone as well。 The plot happens mostly over a few hours, so at times I felt like it's moving a little slow, but it was overall a good story with a good amount of Korean folklore elements。I'll definitely keep an eye out for future books by Yoon Ha Lee! I absolutely adore Dragon Pearl and really excited when they announce the sequel so I really have high hope for this。 Unfortunately this book does not meet my expectation。 I quite like Sebin, despite being a tiger they have a really soft heart, I like like reading about Sebin’s internal struggle in choosing side, but that’s just about it。 There is nothing new to the world, the side characters are forgettable, the action is, I don’t know, feel pretty flat to me。

I liked it a lot!! I liked that it took place after the events of Dragon Pearl but it was in the perspective of a different person! I also loved learning about Tiger spirits and their powers! Great story, amazing plot and I definitely was shocked while reading the book, especially in the beginning because I started the book with a preconceived notion that was later proven wrong!

For my full review check out my blog。 This book was amazing! I loved every second of it and read it in one sitting。 I'd love another book with Sebin in it, especially one that allows Sebin and Min to work together again。 I thought that Sebin offered a unique perspective and identity to the world, new thoughts and feelings and actions。 They were distinct from Min, but the two aren't complete opposites。 The action and characters worked really well together to make a very interesting story。 I was For my full review check out my blog。 This book was amazing! RATING: 2/5⭐REVIEWMaybe my expectations of this book were way too high because I loved the first book so much。 Unfortunately, this book did not meet my expectations。 While reading the first book I never felt like the main character, Min, was too young。 On the other hand, the main character in this book, Sebin, read so much younger even though they were the same age as Min。I think this book would have benefited from being longer。 Because it was so short, I did not like the pacing of the story。 I RATING: 2/5⭐REVIEWMaybe my expectations of this book were way too high because I loved the first book so much。 Unfortunately, this book did not meet my expectations。 While reading the first book I never felt like the main character, Min, was too young。 On the other hand, the main character in this book, Sebin, read so much younger even though they were the same age as Min。I think this book would have benefited from being longer。 Because it was so short, I did not like the pacing of the story。 I did not have enough time to get to know the characters and care for them。 The entire time during the battle I found myself bored and not invested。 。。。more

Thanks to NetGalley & Disney Publishing Worldwide for the early copy in exchange for an honest review。A sequel to Lee's "Dragon Pearl" this follows a different character set in the same universe。 Sebin is a magical tiger spirit--loyal to his clan but his loyalty is put in question when he joins a space force set to protect all worlds。 Should he follow his family's clan or protect the universe?I wasn't really a huge fan of Sebin as a protagonist, but I think it's mainly because the book is way sh Thanks to NetGalley & Disney Publishing Worldwide for the early copy in exchange for an honest review。A sequel to Lee's "Dragon Pearl" this follows a different character set in the same universe。 Sebin is a magical tiger spirit--loyal to his clan but his loyalty is put in question when he joins a space force set to protect all worlds。 Should he follow his family's clan or protect the universe?I wasn't really a huge fan of Sebin as a protagonist, but I think it's mainly because the book is way shorter than Dragon Pearl。 I think it really could've benefitted from more world-building like DP。。。it had really cool concepts in it, carried over from DP, but it was lacking。 Still, fantasy mixed with sci-fi is a great combo and I can't wait to see what else Yoon Ha Lee writes! 。。。more

Just how far will you go for them when you find out they're in the wrong, even if they're your family and you've looked up to them all your life? Throughout the book, Sebin is forced to confront everything they know and grow up believing in and use that information to determine whose side they should take at the end of the day。Tiger Honor was a fun trip back into the Thousand Worlds universe Lee initially set up in Dragon Pearl。 With new and old characters alike, we're taken back into the Space Forces and introduced to familiar and new aspects of Korean mythology。This review was originally posted on Bookwyrming Thoughts。 。。。more

After falling in love with Lee’s DRAGON PEARL, I was interested in reading TIGER HONOR, but was curious as to how the book would unravel。 Once again, I began reading this novel with apprehension, only to discover (again) how much I appreciate Lee’s craft。DRAGON PEARL was written using Min’s POV。 With TIGER HONOR, the book is written using the POV of Sebin, the non-binary niece/nephew of Captain Kwan who was featured in the first Thousand World’s novel。 Like the first novel, Lee includes non-bina After falling in love with Lee’s DRAGON PEARL, I was interested in reading TIGER HONOR, but was curious as to how the book would unravel。 Once again, I began reading this novel with apprehension, only to discover (again) how much I appreciate Lee’s craft。DRAGON PEARL was written using Min’s POV。 With TIGER HONOR, the book is written using the POV of Sebin, the non-binary niece/nephew of Captain Kwan who was featured in the first Thousand World’s novel。 Like the first novel, Lee includes non-binary characters, but the second book gives a non-binary character (Sebin) the lead role。This novel takes a deep look into the concept of honor which, like beauty, is a social construct that differs among cultures and changes over time。 In this book, readers learn how Korean honor is understood and identified。 I was particularly gratified that the author took the initiative to ensure that not everyone in the Tiger Clan acted the same (e。g。, Hasun) so that readers understand that in Korean culture—just like in every culture—every individual has agency。This agency was an important part of this book。 Lee ensures that readers understand that everyone makes choices; that despite any norms or rules that our culture and clans/groups that we belong to make, that we can (and should) ultimately make our own choices that will benefit ourselves and the common good。 That even when we make choices that are not initially the best, that we can later change our minds and the trajectory of our futures。 Through the MC Sebin, Lee reminds readers that when a door closes (e。g, being ostracized by a family), a window opens (e。g。, a new life and friends in the Space Forces)。This novel could be used as a teaching tool in schools around the country。 Not just for its mythological value and cultural significance, but also for how Lee approaches and gives voice to non-binary people and the book’s focus on doing the right thing。 With clean language and absence of violence, this book would be a perfect fit for any school’s MG reading list。 I highly recommend this book! 。。。more
