Summary

Darkly seductive, this twisty modern-day fairy tale by critically acclaimed author Krystal Sutherland is a gripping, terrifying journey where three sisters discover they are not all that they seem。 Now in paperback。

Iris Hollow and her two older sisters are unquestionably strange。 As children, they disappeared on a Scottish city street only to return a month later with no memory of what had happened to them or where they'd been。 More troubling, their appearance began to change: their blue eyes now black, their dark hair now white。 And as they grew older, odd, eerie occurrences seemed to follow in their wake。 People find them disturbingly intoxicating, unbearably beautiful, and inexplicably dangerous。

Now seventeen-year-old Iris is doing all she can to fit in and graduate high school on time--something her two famous, glamorous, globe-trotting older sisters, Grey and Vivi, never managed to do。 But when Grey goes missing, leaving behind bizarre clues as to her whereabouts, Iris and Vivi are left to find her--but they aren't the only ones looking。 As they brush against the supernatural, Iris quickly realizes that the story she's been told about their past is unraveling and the world that returned them seemingly unharmed ten years ago might just be calling them back again。

This book was so addicting to read that I finished it in 2 days! The descriptive writing and atmosphere were *chef's kiss*。 Sutherland writes horror so well, and I loved the combination of creepiness and femininity。 It’s both grotesque and aesthetically pleasing; ethereal while disturbingly strange。 I thoroughly enjoyed reading this。 This book was so addicting to read that I finished it in 2 days! Classic folklore with a modern setting。 I adore folklore and folktales, especially those from the British Isles, and so I found this story thoroughly enjoyable as it had a true folklore feel, something that is difficult to achieve when using a modern setting。The story was predictable in the same way all folktales are predictable which I didn't mind as it just added to the story's appeal for me。 Classic folklore with a modern setting。 I adore folklore and folktales, especially those from the British Isles, and so I found this story thoroughly enjoyable as it had a true folklore feel, something that is difficult to achieve when using a modern setting。The story was predictable in the same way all folktales are predictable which I didn't mind as it just added to the story's appeal for me。 。。。more

This book was the perfect one to get me out of my reading slump。 This book kept me guessing, just when I’d thought I had figured out the ending it changed。 It gave just the right amount of mystery and anticipation for answers without dragging the story on and on。 It had beautiful writing and descriptions and I loved it! I would be excited for a sequel。

I have…。 questions about this book。 Main question, is this going to be a series because I feel like there are some further details and answers I need!! I feel like there were a lot of things left open-ended, and I definitely need more backstory about the sisters and this world。 All of my questions were still pretty much left unanswered at the end, and the ending made me say “wait…。 That’s it??” so I am really hoping for a second book, lol。 All-in-all though, a strong, exciting, suspenseful book!

Yum, yes! This was soooo good。 Deliciously dark and sinister with a tasty mystery。 I need more of this immediately。 I hope there’s a sequel…。

The premise of this book was promising。 Three sisters disappear into thin air and suddenly reappear 1 month later - naked, their dark hair changed to white。 What happened to them? None of them remember - or so they say。Move forward in time and Grey Hollow has made a name for herself as a model, fashion designer, muse。 Everyone wants to see her, touch her, be her。。。 but does anyone really know her? Do her sisters even know her?Vivi and Iris soon learn that they probably don't know her as well as The premise of this book was promising。 Three sisters disappear into thin air and suddenly reappear 1 month later - naked, their dark hair changed to white。 What happened to them? SOMEONE TELL ME WHY THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD!!!! House of Hollow is a horror/ mystery book and it follows the character Iris after her sister, Grey, disappears。 Although the story’s main plot was to find Grey, there was also an underlying plot of what happened to them as children too。 It’s such an amazingly written book and the plot never got boring。 The ending was also shocking。 I had never thought that would be the answer to the mystery。 This book is so underrated and should definitely be read mo SOMEONE TELL ME WHY THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD!!!! disturbingly gorgeous and written in a way that lures you in like a siren's song。 the prose and flower symbolism were darkly honeyed, sugared until unraveled to reveal the rotten truth beneath the fairy tale。i for one loved the narration of iris hollow, with the poetic and haunting imagery of her sickening love for her sisters, its easy to get lost in the dazzling aesthetic of dark forests, moss covered ruins, demonic plants, and sweet death。 definitely a tale to ruminate over。 disturbingly gorgeous and written in a way that lures you in like a siren's song。 the prose and flower symbolism were darkly honeyed, sugared until unraveled to reveal the rotten truth beneath the fairy tale。i for one loved the narration of iris hollow, with the poetic and haunting imagery of her sickening love for her sisters, its easy to get lost in the dazzling aesthetic of dark forests, moss covered ruins, demonic plants, and sweet death。 definitely a tale to ruminate over。 。。。more

I wanted to knock a star off for just how DEEPLY this novel upset me, but that would be unfair。 Sutherland enchanted me, terrified me, unnerved me, and depressed me。 The writing is phenomenal, and I was asking myself every few scenes "How is this YA???"One of my favorite series of all time is Thomas Harris's Hannibal quartet (or trilogy, depending on your thoughts on the prequel), and this? This marketed-to-teens fantasy-horror??? This marketed-to-teens fantasy-horror??? THIS BOOK upset me as much as Hannibal。 Possibly more: visceral descriptions of decay have always made my guts squirm in self-realization that one day they too will rot。 It was a pick of the month at a bookstore I work at, and figured I'd give it a go--I didn't notice until I had started reading it that she had previously written another novel I enjoyed, but wow going in blind to this was a treat。 The fantasy elements are so slow building, slow /burning/ that by the time you're there it feels incredibly, horribly real。 There's a couple moments early on that I wish either the editor didn't insist on including, or else told Sutherland to remove--Iris talks about her airpods, a TV show, and a few modern Gen-Z slang terms that felt out of place in an otherwise ambivalently 2009-2021 setting, and jarred me out of the disbelief。 Maybe it's personal: I do prefer vaguer details as to when books take place。 But all of these occur in the first few chapters, I assume trying to connect to the reader before the story QUICKLY descends into darkness。All in all, an absolutely phenomenal horror novel。 。。。more

I love a good YA and this was no exception。Written in such beautiful detail that brings it so easily to life。 Woke up all my senses and put me right there with Iris。

Holy crap, I loved this。 Why I stayed away from YA titles for so long is beyond me。

**4。5⭐**Such a gut-wrenching and creepy, yet touching, dark fairy tale。 I'm a sucker for sister stories, so add spooky shit and magic and I'm here for it。 I'm reserving half a star (for my personal records 🤓) because I want to reread this physically。 I feel like the descriptions will be a bit more impactful that way。That said, the audiobook was gorgeously done, the accents were fun, and the story made me cry and almost cry on multiple occasions。 **4。5⭐**Such a gut-wrenching and creepy, yet touching, dark fairy tale。 I'm a sucker for sister stories, so add spooky shit and magic and I'm here for it。 I'm reserving half a star (for my personal records 🤓) because I want to reread this physically。 I feel like the descriptions will be a bit more impactful that way。That said, the audiobook was gorgeously done, the accents were fun, and the story made me cry and almost cry on multiple occasions。 。。。more

This novel just wasn’t for me, it was hard to get into。 I did enjoy the last 60 pages or so。 It was well written with a beautiful choice of words。 Was not too long or too short, and very well thought out timeline。 With that being said even though it wasn’t for me and it was hard to push through and finish。 This is over all a well written piece of art。 Fantasy is not my genre of choice but I wanted to give it a try due to the hype。

It was fine, tbh I didn't expect a lot from it because it was YA and I wasn't disappointed with what I got。 There were some interesting concepts and sometimes the prose was really beautiful。 My main issue was it ping ponging between more serious and prosy scenes to extremely casual dialogue or mild drama。 I understand it can't be all serious all the time and audiences need room to breathe, but it just felt like I was reading 2 different books with 2 different tones spliced together。Anyway。 My ma It was fine, tbh I didn't expect a lot from it because it was YA and I wasn't disappointed with what I got。 There were some interesting concepts and sometimes the prose was really beautiful。 My main issue was it ping ponging between more serious and prosy scenes to extremely casual dialogue or mild drama。 I understand it can't be all serious all the time and audiences need room to breathe, but it just felt like I was reading 2 different books with 2 different tones spliced together。Anyway。 My main take away is (view spoiler)[ WHY DOES GABE HAVE A GUN。 This ruined every scene he was in for 2 reasons。 Firstly, what is the point of having a spooky monster man if you just give him a gun, the juxtaposition of the two just becomes funny and you loose any punch your monster had。 Second, who the hell gave the spooky monster man a gun? In England? He's gross and decaying its not like he could just waltz into a gun store and be handed a firearm。 Did he steal it? From whom? It just completely ruined the immersion for me and every single scene I kept thinking about this absolute nonsensical plot point。 How hard is it to just give him a knife or something。 Or honestly like, a carved piece of bone would've made more sense based on what we see being available in the Halfway。 We don't know where Grey got her knife either, but she keeps it close because its rare and precious and was their only means of salvation。 You're telling me Gabe found a GUN and then doesn't care and looses it in like every fight in the book? Nah。 Did not work for me。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more
