Fuck me that hurt。I know it wasn’t made to deter anyone from considering medicine, actually the aftermath applauded the NHS and their sacrifice, but his experiences really fucked me up。I’m not considering going into medicine via the NHS anymore, especially not A&E。 But the good he said about the career- I agree with immensely, I want to go into medicine via the national forces even more。Potentially not patriotic enough to go via NHS but serve in the Air Force?Adam Kay deserves a hug

This is hilarious and also sad and moving in parts, it is really eye opening as to the work involved in obstetrics and the hours the doctors work and how many things can go wrong。 This is laugh out loud funny in parts and I also liked how he changed some of the names for Harry Potter characters。

Didn't expect this book to hit as hard as it does。 I don't think you ever really realise what the NHS and its staff go through on a daily basis until you read something like this。 Adam gives such a detailed account of his days, from finishing his training and spending his first day on a ward to the very last。 It's a hilarious but heartbreaking montage of moments, that give great context and information on doctorly duties。 I think it's easy to forget, when you're in a non-medical field - with you Didn't expect this book to hit as hard as it does。 I don't think you ever really realise what the NHS and its staff go through on a daily basis until you read something like this。 Adam gives such a detailed account of his days, from finishing his training and spending his first day on a ward to the very last。 It's a hilarious but heartbreaking montage of moments, that give great context and information on doctorly duties。 I think it's easy to forget, when you're in a non-medical field - with your weekends off, fixed hours and basically guaranteed pay rises - that doctors, nurses and other members of our health service are in fact human, and not some sub-species of genetically-modified homo-sapiens with super powers。 They just human。 We need to remember this more, and make sure we're standing up for our health care professionals that spend so much of their time looking after us。 We need to keep the NHS going, but we need to make it sustainable。 We need to stand up for our health care providers。 We need to make it more humane。 。。。more

I bought this ages ago in a charity shop but hadn’t got round to reading it as it’s not my usual sort of book。 However, with the arrival of the new BBC series, this went straight to the top of my TBR pile。 It was such a convenient read for a busy working week as it consists of short diary entries which are mostly lighthearted, making light of the worst possible situations。 This was an easy but important read which really makes you appreciate our health workers and the NHS。

I love how this book made me laugh and eek from the start and without realizing I almost cried when I'm about to finish reading this book。 Would love to encourage more people to read this book especially those who don't have any medical background to try understand what it's like to be in the NHS。 I love how this book made me laugh and eek from the start and without realizing I almost cried when I'm about to finish reading this book。 Would love to encourage more people to read this book especially those who don't have any medical background to try understand what it's like to be in the NHS。 。。。more

This is the best description I’ve ever read of medical training - brutally honest, beautiful, crushing- written by someone who sounds like the kind of doctor I want to be。 It’s sad the profession lost someone like him, and I feel like it could be myself or any of my coworkers。

i loved this book initially because its humour is perfect。 but at the same time, aside from the hilarious bits, its so informative on the actual life of a doctor and i learned so much about medical stuff/birth stuff, maybe most of which i would've been okay without knowing。 the style of writing made it a fast but super enjoyable read and itll stick with me for a long time i loved this book initially because its humour is perfect。 but at the same time, aside from the hilarious bits, its so informative on the actual life of a doctor and i learned so much about medical stuff/birth stuff, maybe most of which i would've been okay without knowing。 the style of writing made it a fast but super enjoyable read and itll stick with me for a long time 。。。more

If you can get past the already outdated terminology (such as legitimately using the word ‘hermaphrodite’ on a patient’s file, as well as some antiquated musings on weight loss/fat people ((occurring, admittedly, infrequently and perhaps understandable for the time period in which it was written))), it’s an interesting read。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I am infinitely grateful that I decided to read (listen) to this book。 It was an intimate expose on the life of a junior doctor and it was brutally eye-opening, hilarious, and heart-wrenching all at once。 I was shocked and grossed out (because some medical stuff is just icky), I laughed, and I cried as my heart was ripped out of my chest; a few times whilst behind the wheel of my car, so I needed to pull over and pull myself together。 It really makes me appreciate the gruelling time, effort, and I am infinitely grateful that I decided to read (listen) to this book。 It was an intimate expose on the life of a junior doctor and it was brutally eye-opening, hilarious, and heart-wrenching all at once。 I was shocked and grossed out (because some medical stuff is just icky), I laughed, and I cried as my heart was ripped out of my chest; a few times whilst behind the wheel of my car, so I needed to pull over and pull myself together。 It really makes me appreciate the gruelling time, effort, and pieces of the soul that are given up by the selfless humans who devote their lives to the, at times seemingly impossible, job of practicing medicine and trying to save lives on a daily basis。 Being an OB/GYN doctor, almost every account he started had my heart in my mouth not knowing if it was going to be joyous, funny, or heart-breaking。 Sometimes doctors perform miracles, but sometimes they can't, and this was a stark reminder of how delicate life can be。I would definitely recommend listening to this, as it is read by the author, so the emotion he would have felt reading aloud his personal diary entries is conveyed honestly, which makes the emotional entries even moreso。 。。。more

long winded, but funny at times。 found it hard to get through but is a good example of the challenges faced by the NHS staff

Some books must be read slowly, whereas, some must be skim-read, instead。 This one though was definitely the latter。

This Is Going to HurtI have never read such a trueful and powerful book in my whole life。 this book has to be a favourite of mine that I have never had before but now I do。 When it came to watching the Series and reading the book it is completely different as the TV Series has a lot more comedy in it, but then the book has a lot more information and truth。 I found it much sadder than being funnier and I think that Stephen Fry, Charlie Brooker and Dawn French have got it completely wrong when it This Is Going to HurtI have never read such a trueful and powerful book in my whole life。 this book has to be a favourite of mine that I have never had before but now I do。 When it came to watching the Series and reading the book it is completely different as the TV Series has a lot more comedy in it, but then the book has a lot more information and truth。 I found it much sadder than being funnier and I think that Stephen Fry, Charlie Brooker and Dawn French have got it completely wrong when it comes to saying it was hilarious and funny as it was not。 Adam Kay is just such a brilliant writer and hopefully he will write a lot more as he has a true talent when it comes to writing。 I feel that the book would make a wonderful book club or just a general read。 I recommend this book big time and even as a gift。 。。。more

This was good。 It was a funny, easy read。 It was witty and comical but also very heartfelt at the end。 Definitely gives you a good appreciation for the NHS, and how over worked the staff are。 The most shocking parts of the book weren't the goriest or strangest patients or procedures he had to carry out but how much was expected of him with so little support。 This was good。 It was a funny, easy read。 It was witty and comical but also very heartfelt at the end。 Definitely gives you a good appreciation for the NHS, and how over worked the staff are。 The most shocking parts of the book weren't the goriest or strangest patients or procedures he had to carry out but how much was expected of him with so little support。 。。。more

Hilarious and heartbreaking。 Amazing read, which opened my eyes to the highs and lows of working in the NHS。 Everyone should read this!

Honest, funny, uncensored!

This great book hooks you with tiny snippets that are very funny。 Then this likeable, wonderful doctor just walks away。 Bang。 Just like that。 I totally got it。 I want to walk away all the time。 (Overworked, unattainable expectations, crazies。) You never know what will be the final straw。 Great book。

Some very strange holier-than-thou nonsense going on in this review section。)A very nice start to my "Male Author March" readathon。 。。。more

A comedic take on the hardships of being a doctor in the NHS。 Engaging throughout, would recommend to anyone!!

Interesting and humorous。 Tendency was to mostly have stories with sexual overtones。

I didn't love this as much as everyone else seemed to unfortunately。 Maybe just down to my own tastes but I found the author quite insensitive and I was surprised to read some of the comments he made about the patients and babies。 I didn't love this as much as everyone else seemed to unfortunately。 Maybe just down to my own tastes but I found the author quite insensitive and I was surprised to read some of the comments he made about the patients and babies。 。。。more

3。75 Breezed through this one。 In the beginning I found the book very funny - even laughing out loud at points from his anecdotes - but it became a little stale and felt the author was trying too hard to be funny at some points。 Jokes were made about the elderly & there were fatphobic comments that just didn’t land well with me (a few entries definitely could’ve been missed out too, I don’t particularly want to know that you were having a wank 60 seconds prior to delivering a baby)。 However, I d 3。75 Breezed through this one。 In the beginning I found the book very funny - even laughing out loud at points from his anecdotes - but it became a little stale and felt the author was trying too hard to be funny at some points。 Jokes were made about the elderly & there were fatphobic comments that just didn’t land well with me (a few entries definitely could’ve been missed out too, I don’t particularly want to know that you were having a wank 60 seconds prior to delivering a baby)。 However, I did enjoy reading this as it was a good insight to the life of a junior doctor working for the NHS - they definitely are overworked and underpaid! 。。。more

If I hadn't been rewatching House MD this could easily be 5 stars。 You see where I'm going with this。。。 although this is more realistic, the humor and sacarsm sometimes aren't my taste。 It does get better at the end when you can see the true feelings coming out more。 It's a very enjoyable read but not as eye-opening for me。 If I hadn't been rewatching House MD this could easily be 5 stars。 You see where I'm going with this。。。 although this is more realistic, the humor and sacarsm sometimes aren't my taste。 It does get better at the end when you can see the true feelings coming out more。 It's a very enjoyable read but not as eye-opening for me。 。。。more
