Summary

The families who rule the People’s Republic of Haven are in trouble。 The treasury’s empty, the Proles are restless, and civil war is imminent。
But the ruling class knows what they need to keep in power: another short, victorious war to unite the people and fill the treasury once more。 It’s a card they’ve played often in the last half-century, always successfully, and all that stands in their way is the Star Kingdom of Manticore and its threadbare allies。 Enemies who in the past have always backed down。
Only this time the Peeps face something different。 This time they’re up against Captain Honor Harrington and a Royal Manticoran Navy that’s prepared to give them a war that’s far from short。。。and anything but victorious

Good flow, but not great staying power。 As a serial, no real resolution。

David Weber does an outstanding job in all facets of his writing。 He spends time to thoroughly develop characters and does a nice job of expanding on the "speculative physics" of FTL travel and weaponry。 His books are an entertaining blend of personal relationships, politics, and action。 I look forward to reading many, many more。 David Weber does an outstanding job in all facets of his writing。 He spends time to thoroughly develop characters and does a nice job of expanding on the "speculative physics" of FTL travel and weaponry。 His books are an entertaining blend of personal relationships, politics, and action。 I look forward to reading many, many more。 。。。more

I've enjoyed the Honor Harrington so far, I'm not sure I'll continue through the whole series, but probably a few more。 The slightly right wing world view jars a little, on the other hand they're thirty years old, so a little old-fashioned is OK, and they're said to get less political as they go along。 What I do like about the series is the character of Honor herself, I love the cat of course, and the stories are very well thought out, and well written。 The battle scenes are amongst the best I'v I've enjoyed the Honor Harrington so far, I'm not sure I'll continue through the whole series, but probably a few more。 The slightly right wing world view jars a little, on the other hand they're thirty years old, so a little old-fashioned is OK, and they're said to get less political as they go along。 What I do like about the series is the character of Honor herself, I love the cat of course, and the stories are very well thought out, and well written。 The battle scenes are amongst the best I've read, I'm thinking this one is based on the battle of Leyte gulf, it doesn't make it any less exciting, it's not easy to make that sort of thing understandable。 It's rated 4。17 , which I think is quite fair。 。。。more

I think if I have to read another line about how she thinks she has the face of a horse, I will throw all of the Honor Herrington books out the window。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。

OkSecond reading。 I remembered it as better when I first read it。 But, that was in 1994。 Now after reading Dickens and Elliot I’m stingier with my stars of approval。 For space opera I find Bujold meets all my needs。

I read all of these books in a short, 3-4 week period and decided to do one review for the entire series。 It's here。 It has lots of spoilers。Short version? Military Sci-fi that is blossoming into the series it was always intended to be。 Military stats and casualty numbers are thrown around a lot, I tended to gloss over that stuff quite a bit。 I really need to at least learn the relative sizes of the ships since it is essentially naval battles。 The Horatio Hornblower series that this series emulates made that very easy, since each ships name was followed by the number of guns it had。 But Webers ships have all sorts of different weapons, so such a si Military Sci-fi that is blossoming into the series it was always intended to be。 Military stats and casualty numbers are thrown around a lot, I tended to gloss over that stuff quite a bit。 I really need to at least learn the relative sizes of the ships since it is essentially naval battles。 The Horatio Hornblower series that this series emulates made that very easy, since each ships name was followed by the number of guns it had。 But Webers ships have all sorts of different weapons, so such a simplistic method wont work。 Ship sizes, acceleration, tonnage, the speeds and distances of engagement are supposed to lend a hard sci fi component to the normal space battles? I preferred to just follow along the general action and characters without thinking about the specifics。 Its a good series, enjoyable plots, decent characters even if stereotypical。 Some politics in that a liberal Monarchy and a Socialist empire are in conflict, with the liberal Monarchy protagonists getting the far better treatment。 。。。more

Took about a year break after the second novel before getting to this one。 Overall, I'd say this is about equal to the second - they both have slightly different pros and cons。 The defense of Grayson in book 2 is a bit more exciting - and easier to follow - than the cat-and-mouse contest of maneuvering that is the main thrust of this book, but they both still have tense climaxes。 Once again, however, the stakes are severely hampered by the fact that this is the third book in a 14-book series。 Ye Took about a year break after the second novel before getting to this one。 Overall, I'd say this is about equal to the second - they both have slightly different pros and cons。 The defense of Grayson in book 2 is a bit more exciting - and easier to follow - than the cat-and-mouse contest of maneuvering that is the main thrust of this book, but they both still have tense climaxes。 Once again, however, the stakes are severely hampered by the fact that this is the third book in a 14-book series。 Yes, the situation near the end is dire, but you know that Honor will survive it。 But that's not fully this specific book's fault - it's also fault of the fact that I am reading this 27 years after it was written。** Mild spoilers below **As for nitpicks, I certainly have a few。 I guess I'll start with my biggest complaint - the romance plot is absolutely terrible。 Simply abysmal。 It's uninteresting, it's rushed as hell, and feels incredibly forced in all respects。 A big aspect of Honor's past is that she was almost raped - more on that guy later - and that is one of the main contributing factors as to why she's never been in a true relationship。 Ok。 The books have hammered that home multiple times - until now。 Now, she has a few favorable interactions with a man, and then they're suddenly having sex。 Yes, time passes in the story, but we aren't given any context for what exactly happened during that time passage。 We are thrust from 0 to 100 in that plot。 It's a total whiplash。 Not only that, but after she has sex, apparently everyone is aware of it?? It's super fucking weird。 Even her superior officer hints at it, which is completely creepy。 At the end, Paul (the man she's in a relationship with now) is suddenly promoted and transferred to Honor's ship, because of course everyone wants to keep them together。 That's how the military works! Yep! So, so dumb。 I can't help but wonder if Paul is some sort of self-insert for the author。Everything concerning Pavel Young, Honor's would-be rapist, is also handled poorly。 Yes, he's a despicable human, we get it。 But he's so cartoonishly evil, it's unbelievable。 Not only that, but he's wildly incompetent, so really there is nothing about him that is compelling in any respect。 The couple of sections from Young's perspective were nigh insufferable with all the seething and mustache-twirling he does。 And apparently the fourth book is all about his revenge, so I'm not looking forward to that。。。The first book was largely about Honor having to overcome prejudices to prove she is capable at her job。 But now, in the third book, she has quite clearly proven herself to be more than capable。 So what kind of hurdles will she now have to face? People hating her for no real good reason, apparently。 There's one Commodore (I think) who hates her because in the second book, she assaulted her cousin。 That's enough to make him want to ruin her career, or something。 Ok? I don't really see the motivation there。。。 But even worse than that is Honor's superior officer's superior officer。 (I don't know how these titles work。) He's never met Honor, but he's heard that she's a bit of a hothead, and every report he's read about her actions supports that。 So he decides to completely cut her out of meetings and stuff, because he thinks he won't like her。 And even after he is convinced he should stop doing that, he treats her poorly。 He makes one of the pivotal decisions of the novel that ends up being a bad one, and it's later said that one part of a reason that he made the choice was because he doesn't like Honor。 What?! None of this is reasonable justification! You're just manufacturing drama out of nothing。Another thing that kind of sucks is that there are a number of pretty important events that take place at the end of the novel, and are told in recap only。 We don't actually get to see the scenes of Haven getting pummeled at various locations。 We only get to see the climactic battle, but we are later told that way more happened following that battle。 It's weird。 I don't get why so much of the novel had not a whole lot going on, and then we're told in the span of a few paragraphs that oh hey all this other shit happened too but we didn't have time to show you。 Uh, yeah you could have。****Anyways。 It's a fine read, but it won't blow anyone away。 I still like this series - there's something about the nature of this space navy that I enjoy reading about。 As I said, not especially looking forward to the plot of the fourth book, but I am going to read it nonetheless。 。。。more

Continued progression for the lead heroine who is written in the vein of a girl scout in space。 Unaware of her affect on others whether good or ill。Repeated historical premise/activities transposed into the future to decent results albeit predictable。 Yet moderately engaging。Very much ST:TNG feel to the story。I would recommend and will move onto the next installment。Thanks for reading。

Audio, narrated by Allyson JohnsonI enjoyed this installment (despite the wretched title) but did not find it as gripping or enthralling as the previous two。 That said, I really like Honor as a character and I enjoyed getting to know her better, as well as the political and military shenanigans。

When this book was written the political structure of the bad guys could have been some amalgam of russia and china, but now it reads more like a rant against "socialism" or even "social democracy" and the idea that bad things can happen to good people, and even the hardest working sometimes need some help。Other than that, the good guys are more clever, and even when out-matched and poorly lead, still manage to save the day at the last minute (after a lot of people in red shirts get it)。 "Too cl When this book was written the political structure of the bad guys could have been some amalgam of russia and china, but now it reads more like a rant against "socialism" or even "social democracy" and the idea that bad things can happen to good people, and even the hardest working sometimes need some help。Other than that, the good guys are more clever, and even when out-matched and poorly lead, still manage to save the day at the last minute (after a lot of people in red shirts get it)。 "Too close for missiles, switching to crabs! Here I am in the third of the Honor Harrington novels, and I just don't know how the author is going to be able to keep up this level of quality and entertainment for 14 books。 Already the cracks are beginning to show。 Our heroine once again is at the critical moment during a Haven invasion that could start off a deadly war, and once again she is part of a force that is vastly underpowered compared to her opponents。 This time she is not in charge and her critical efforts only happen in the last Here I am in the third of the Honor Harrington novels, and I just don't know how the author is going to be able to keep up this level of quality and entertainment for 14 books。 Already the cracks are beginning to show。 Our heroine once again is at the critical moment during a Haven invasion that could start off a deadly war, and once again she is part of a force that is vastly underpowered compared to her opponents。 This time she is not in charge and her critical efforts only happen in the last five pages, but otherwise some of the set pieces are starting to repeat themselves。 Honor is steadily climbing in ranks and always starts the novel inordinately pleased with her new appointment, which serves to confuse me as a reader in understanding exactly how good her ships are。 She seems to be given the best of the best every novel, and yet the next novel there is an even greater "honor" waiting for her。 Once again a slough of names and characters are thrown at the reader's head with few of the important ones from previous novels making a reappearance。 Once again everyone is very impressed with Honor and if any of her enemies make an appearance, there is a plethora of like-minded superiors who are ready to back her up。 Its all enormously good schlocky fun, but it is very similar to the previous two novels。 Weirdly, this novel actually has very little Honor in it at all。 Though she starts a new relationship and clashes with an enemy from her past, Honor has little effect on the overall plot。 I suppose this is a natural development enough; she cannot indefinitely be underestimated and underpowered and yet be the linchpin of the resistance, but I wish David Weber had completely changed the type of novel instead, putting a different focus or spin on Honor's activities so that she could still be the center of attention without being in command of an armada in the middle of a space battle。 Instead, this novel splits its attention between Havenite conspirators, Manticoran politicians, and random vignettes of starship captains throughout the warring territories。 This made the novel drag a bit in the middle, especially when interesting personal conflicts erupt in Honor's life and Weber takes a break for several chapters to talk about Haven politics。 My least favorite aspect of sci-fi space operas is their tendency to spend whole chapters characterizing random people only to have them killed off by the end of the chapter and never be mentioned again。 I don't want to waste the mental energy on learning the entire backstory of a red-shirt if their entire purpose is just to provide relevant information for the main character。 I would prefer if the only character deaths under focus were more closely related to the main character or the plot。 Overall, though, I liked this third one better than the second。 The plot made more sense, even if Honor was basically a side character in it, and the violence was toned down a lot, which made the experience a lot more fun for me。 I will probably continue with this series, but I don't know that my stamina will last for the entire 14 books。 。。。more

Definitely a short and victorious warOnce more Honour is thrown into a space battle。 Weber loves the technical and explains how the ships fight, the weapons used and the physics of these。Three stars
