I'm now on a third read, having happily upgraded to the omnibus, and this is still one of the best books DC has ever produced。It's a brilliant noir story with a large cast of well-developed characters set in the Batman universe。 Great mysteries, awful tragedies, a Batman that actually feels like an urban legend, and interesting interactions with the Rogues Gallery。 This is all around amazing。And the ending 。。。。 yikes! Brilliant。 One of the best Batman and DC series。 Further proof that Batman and DC are at their best when they cut back on all the supernatural/alien/multiverse stuff and concentrate on characters and believable worlds。 Comes across like the classic TV shows 'Homicides' and 'The Wire', and all the better for it。 A shame and a blessing that it lasted only 40 volumes, as the quality never dips throughout。 Superb。 Brilliant。 One of the best Batman and DC series。 Further proof that Batman and DC are at their best when they cut back on all the supernatural/alien/multiverse stuff and concentrate on characters and believable worlds。 Comes across like the classic TV shows 'Homicides' and 'The Wire', and all the better for it。 A shame and a blessing that it lasted only 40 volumes, as the quality never dips throughout。 Superb。 。。。more

。。。more

I didn't know that it was possible to hate a fictional character as much as I hate Jim Corrigan in this series。 Gotham Central is exactly how a series focusing on the Major Crimes Unit of the GCPD should be。 This series explores the corruption and the good within not only the MCU but the GCPD as a whole。 The way Brubaker can bring life and show emotions in all of the characters is absolutely mind blowing。 Michael Lark's artwork helps establish the gritty, grounded tone of the series。 This book h I didn't know that it was possible to hate a fictional character as much as I hate Jim Corrigan in this series。 Gotham Central is exactly how a series focusing on the Major Crimes Unit of the GCPD should be。 This series explores the corruption and the good within not only the MCU but the GCPD as a whole。 The way Brubaker can bring life and show emotions in all of the characters is absolutely mind blowing。 Michael Lark's artwork helps establish the gritty, grounded tone of the series。 This book has it all from sadness, loss, and grief, to humor, happiness, and accomplishment。 Character development is perfect throughout。 Crispus Allen, and Renee Montoya in particular are written so well, and their interactions always feel so real。 I honestly cant say enough good things about this book。 The standout story-arcs for me were the opening two issues (In the line of duty), issues 23-24 (Corrigan), and issues 38-40 (Corrigan II) 。。。more

Reread the whole series for the first time in a long time。 I like stories about Gotham from an unusual perspective - like people on the street or in this case, cops。 The writing is good and made for genuine mysteries, which is rare for comics。

As a series, this is probably closer to 4。5 stars (with some issues down to 3 stars), but I love the whole thing so much。。。。The high concept is great: tell the stories of Gotham detectives in the Major Crimes Unit (i。e。, the ones most likely to run into Batman's foes, or what the cops call the "freaks")。 Do they like working with Batman? (Usually not。) Are they angry about the state of crime in the city? (Probably yes。) Do they have to deal with crooked police and frustrating bureaucracy? (Usually not。) Are they angry about the state of crime in the city? (Probably yes。) Do they have to deal with crooked police and frustrating bureaucracy? (All the time。)You have two of my favorite comics writers, Brubaker and Rucka, writing what they do very well: ground level gritty stories that still have humor and pack a wallop plotwise。 You get tales that feature tons of characters in the Batman milieu, including the mystery of multiple dead Robins, a chilling Mad Hatter story with lots of Arkham Asylum, and a stellar Joker-as-sniper serial。 (The creators hit it out of the park with a portrayal of the Joker in police custody --- it's super weird to see a character that crazed in the normal setting of an interrogation room。)Much of the art at the beginning of the series is by Michael Lark, who sets the visual aesthetic for the book: scratchy pencils with tons of black ink and muddy colors。 Lark carries it off quite well, but it's an art style that can go bad in the wrong hands。 There are some stories by other artists where faces tend towards the unrecognizable with the grit, and throughout the series I got a little tired of panels with talking heads and no backgrounds。 Besides Lark's work, I found Brian Hurtt's issue (#11) and a story by Kano and Gaudino (#33-36) to really shine。I just reread this in pamphlet form and am now very tempted to buy the collection。 It's one of my favorite examples from the Big 2 of small personal stories that work within a wider continuity。 。。。more

This massive collection weighs six pounds and is over 950 pages long。 It’s a behemoth。 I thoroughly enjoyed the range of police stories Brubaker cooks up and the plotting made me think about HBO’s The Wire。 I could even imagine McNulty and Bunk making an appearance in the station。 Their rapport would blend in perfectly with the Gotham City detective’s banter。 I love Batman but it was refreshing to have him in the background with the sole focus on the detectives。

Outstanding。 I'm probably the only comic fan who doesn't really give two-hoots about Batman and although this deals with Gotham, Batman plays only a minor role。 This is a down-in-the-gutter look at the Gotham police force with a focus on the major crimes unit。 The storytelling is brilliant, the art for the most part is a perfect compliment (minus the last arc where many of the characters look the same due to a different artist)。 Surprised at how fast this read is。 What put this at a 5-star was t Outstanding。 I'm probably the only comic fan who doesn't really give two-hoots about Batman and although this deals with Gotham, Batman plays only a minor role。 This is a down-in-the-gutter look at the Gotham police force with a focus on the major crimes unit。 The storytelling is brilliant, the art for the most part is a perfect compliment (minus the last arc where many of the characters look the same due to a different artist)。 Surprised at how fast this read is。 What put this at a 5-star was the fact I'll definitely be reading this one again! 。。。more

A masterful series from two greats。 While the latter arcs don't have the same power as the beginning, this is still a consistent, remarkable look at the day-to-day of Gotham's world and how it operates。 While it certainty teeters on justifying violent actions, it has a more moral conscious than some Batman comics, showing the flaws and tears within the social justice system as well as the small gains。 A remarkable thing and a highlight in both authors' bodies of work。 A masterful series from two greats。 While the latter arcs don't have the same power as the beginning, this is still a consistent, remarkable look at the day-to-day of Gotham's world and how it operates。 While it certainty teeters on justifying violent actions, it has a more moral conscious than some Batman comics, showing the flaws and tears within the social justice system as well as the small gains。 A remarkable thing and a highlight in both authors' bodies of work。 。。。more

Gotham Central is Homicide: Life on The Street of The DC UniverseA fantastic read。 The inner workings of the GCPD are laid bare as we get to know the detective pairings of the day & night shift, and how the shadow of The Bat affects their job。 Over the course of 40 issues Batman shows up only a handful of times, but the weight of who he is & what he does is present at all times。 Believe me though, he isn't missed as the case files and personal tales of the detectives are compelling from start to Gotham Central is Homicide: Life on The Street of The DC UniverseA fantastic read。 The inner workings of the GCPD are laid bare as we get to know the detective pairings of the day & night shift, and how the shadow of The Bat affects their job。 Over the course of 40 issues Batman shows up only a handful of times, but the weight of who he is & what he does is present at all times。 Believe me though, he isn't missed as the case files and personal tales of the detectives are compelling from start to finish。 Gritty art by Lark et al。 match the stories Brubaker and Rucka have written and keep them grounded in 'reality' and not in the world of the Supes。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

Not being a reader of Batman comics, but having grown up, like most, knowing most of the players through the various movies and TV show episodes, I went into "Gotham Central" hoping the presence of Brubaker would make this worthwhile - it certainly was。 The type of grand epic I didn't want to end, a proper investigative narrative that reaches as far around the city as the show "The Wire", and containing more that-was-my-favourite-arc-yet moments than I can pick out to express how much I enjoyed Not being a reader of Batman comics, but having grown up, like most, knowing most of the players through the various movies and TV show episodes, I went into "Gotham Central" hoping the presence of Brubaker would make this worthwhile - it certainly was。 The type of grand epic I didn't want to end, a proper investigative narrative that reaches as far around the city as the show "The Wire", and containing more that-was-my-favourite-arc-yet moments than I can pick out to express how much I enjoyed the particular investigation。 A crazy finale with a bittersweet comedown, solid characters with intriguing lives, and funny throughout, even if you're not a fan of Batman comics you can get lost in this world and have a pleasurable time。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

This was incredible。 I’m just sad it’s over so quickly, even though it is a giant omnibus。 Brubaker and Rucka work great together, and I absolutely loved seeing Gotham from this angle。 The Joker story was genuinely terrifying, and they definitely used the POV of “regular people” to their advantage particularly well there。 Also Montoya is the best, and Rucka’s chapters with her were so heartbreaking and amazing。

It's an interesting idea, a police procedural intermingled with Batman and supervillains。 The characters were quite believable, with their personalities and flaws。 Some of the stories were really great, some of them not so much。 However, I was somewhat underwhelmed by the artwork。 It's noir-ish alright, but most of the characters looked quite similar looking。 I couldn't tell them apart。 It's an interesting idea, a police procedural intermingled with Batman and supervillains。 The characters were quite believable, with their personalities and flaws。 Some of the stories were really great, some of them not so much。 However, I was somewhat underwhelmed by the artwork。 It's noir-ish alright, but most of the characters looked quite similar looking。 I couldn't tell them apart。 。。。more

I’m only 4 issues in, but I’m confident that this is a 5 star book。 If the rest of it is even half as good, it would be a 5-star book。 I probably overuse the phrase but this is another that I just could not put down。 Coloring felt very similar to V is for Vendetta。 It’s Law and Order in the Batman universe。 A couple notes:* Paper quality is amazing, which helps。 So many DC omnibii have really cheap newspaper style paper, but this is durable and feels great, for those who care about such things。* I’m only 4 issues in, but I’m confident that this is a 5 star book。 If the rest of it is even half as good, it would be a 5-star book。 I probably overuse the phrase but this is another that I just could not put down。 Coloring felt very similar to V is for Vendetta。 It’s Law and Order in the Batman universe。 A couple notes:* Paper quality is amazing, which helps。 So many DC omnibii have really cheap newspaper style paper, but this is durable and feels great, for those who care about such things。* All of the art from pencils, colors, inks and letters is among the best I've ever seen。 This MUST be read in oversize format to do it true justice。* I'm prone to recency bias so some of my other 5 star reviews may go down over time (looking at you X-O Manowar)。 This one I'm confident will never dip below 5。I fully intend to wear out my copy and have to buy it again in trades。 Again, it won't do it justice, but I'm amazed this book was still in print when I got it。 。。。more
