Summary

Is middle school drama scarier than an asteroid heading for Earth? Find out in this smart and funny novel by the author of The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl。

Every day in middle school can feel like the end of the world。

Eleanor Dross knows a thing or two about the end of the world, thanks to a survivalist grandfather who stockpiles freeze-dried food and supplies--just in case。 So when she reads about a Harvard scientist's prediction that an asteroid will strike Earth in April, Eleanor knows her family will be prepared。 Her classmates? They're on their own!

Eleanor has just one friend she wants to keep safe: Mack。 They've been best friends since kindergarten, even though he's more of a smiley emoji and she's more of an eye-roll emoji。 They'll survive the end of the world together 。 。 。 if Mack doesn't go away to a special school for the blind。

But it's hard to keep quiet about a life-destroying asteroid--especially at a crowded lunch table--and soon Eleanor is the president of the (secret) End of the World Club。 It turns out that prepping for TEOTWAWKI (the End of the World as We Know It) is actually kind of fun。 But you can't really prepare for everything life drops on you。 And one way or another, Eleanor's world is about to change。

This had many shining moments, but unfortunately after the magnificent Miscalculations of Lightning Girl, this book could not stand up to Stacy McAnulty's previous book。 It was about one hundred pages too long and the character of Mack was too one-dimensional。 He was present in the beginning and end of the book but faded to a shadow in the middle。 The friendship with Londyn happened far too easily considering how much the two girls hated each other。 And even the main character, Eleanor, was not This had many shining moments, but unfortunately after the magnificent Miscalculations of Lightning Girl, this book could not stand up to Stacy McAnulty's previous book。 It was about one hundred pages too long and the character of Mack was too one-dimensional。 He was present in the beginning and end of the book but faded to a shadow in the middle。 The friendship with Londyn happened far too easily considering how much the two girls hated each other。 And even the main character, Eleanor, was not fully fleshed out。 Why did she grasp onto this asteroid and become so obsessed with it? Why couldn't she see the evidence discrediting the scientist's website? There was no mention of her missing her mom and she seemed to have a distant relationship to both her father and brothers。 As a reader, I almost hoped for the asteroid to hit so there would be something surprising and exciting to read about。 。。。more

Based on a conversation with a middle school student, I think tweens and young teens will enjoy this book, about Eleanor a seventh grader, who believes the world as we know it is ending on April 7, more than adults。 Eleanor is determined to do everything she can to prepare her family and classmates for doomsday。 Will she succeed in preparing? Will the world really end in this story? I liked this book。 I liked Eleanor, the main character, and I love Stacy McAnulty's writing。 This book touched on family, friendship, end-of-the-world drama, school, and clubs。 Eleanor's grandfather is an EOTW survivalist so she has learned a thing or two about surviving, so when it seems an asteroid is coming to earth, she and her family are prepared。 Now, she must get her friends and school prepared。 She's embarrassed at first, but when the survival club gets bigger and kids get involved, it's I liked this book。 I liked Eleanor, the main character, and I love Stacy McAnulty's writing。 This book touched on family, friendship, end-of-the-world drama, school, and clubs。 Eleanor's grandfather is an EOTW survivalist so she has learned a thing or two about surviving, so when it seems an asteroid is coming to earth, she and her family are prepared。 Now, she must get her friends and school prepared。 She's embarrassed at first, but when the survival club gets bigger and kids get involved, it's everything she imagined being popular would be。 Twists and turns and truths ensue, and Eleanor learns life lessons along the way--lessons we all can learn。 。。。more

Eleanor Dross is a prepper or at least her grandfather is。 She finds something on the internet about an asteroid hitting the earth and becomes very prepared。 She and her best friend Mack come up with an idea for TEOTWAWKI (The End Of The World As We Know It。) The book was amazing and kept me guessing。 I would give it 4 out of 5 stars because the author was very descriptive。 It states on page 18 that a science professor has discovered an asteroid that will hit the earth。 It is exciting to think a Eleanor Dross is a prepper or at least her grandfather is。 She finds something on the internet about an asteroid hitting the earth and becomes very prepared。 She and her best friend Mack come up with an idea for TEOTWAWKI (The End Of The World As We Know It。) The book was amazing and kept me guessing。 I would give it 4 out of 5 stars because the author was very descriptive。 It states on page 18 that a science professor has discovered an asteroid that will hit the earth。 It is exciting to think about preparing for this kind of adventure! Calling all STEM focused kids! This is a fabulous fiction book rec for you! My 10yo daughter just finished THE WORLD ENDS IN APRIL by @stacymcanulty and what a delight! Stacy’s previous novel THE MISCALCULATIONS OF LIGHTNING GIRL is one of our family faves! We read it together years ago and all agreed it was one of the best children’s chapter books we had ever read (yes, go buy this one now!)。 With that in mind, my daughter gave THE WORLD ENDS IN APRIL high praise, saying she really enjoyed the Calling all STEM focused kids! In her novels you can absolutely tell that she has a firm grasp on all things math + science。 So be sure to grab this book。。 but especially if your kid ❤️s numbers!Plot Overview from Publisher:Eleanor Dross knows a thing or two about the end of the world, thanks to a survivalist grandfather。 So when she reads about a Harvard scientist's prediction that an asteroid will strike Earth in April, Eleanor knows her family will be prepared。 Her classmates? A very anxious middle school girl finds a website that says a meteor is going to hit the earth and she uses her prepper skills learned from grandpa to get a group of kids ready。 The end of the world plot was not my favorite but I did enjoy the relationships she had and the ones she developed。 She seemed pretty lonely and kind of like she hated school and life, so it was nice to see her grow。 However, parts seemed a little unrealistic and the adults in her life seemed to fail her。 I did like the A very anxious middle school girl finds a website that says a meteor is going to hit the earth and she uses her prepper skills learned from grandpa to get a group of kids ready。 The end of the world plot was not my favorite but I did enjoy the relationships she had and the ones she developed。 She seemed pretty lonely and kind of like she hated school and life, so it was nice to see her grow。 However, parts seemed a little unrealistic and the adults in her life seemed to fail her。 I did like the shout out to the media specialist for teaching how to find reliable sources, although that didn’t seem to help Elle。 There is some light humor which is appreciated as Elle seems to spiral out of control。 6th grade and up。 。。。more

I like this author。 There were a couple of unresolved conflicts (in my opinion)。 Eleanor may be a bit unlikable to some but I found her quite relatable。

An adorable middle school novel with an entertaining mix of drama, relationship issues and humour。 I especially liked the reference to one of my all time favourite books - Counting by 7s。 My only complaint is that I felt it was about 50 pages too long。

I listened to this one after reading her bestseller, The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl (which was awesome)。 This one did not hit the same mark for me。 The story dragged at times and I kept waiting for the main character, Eleanor, to have greater depth, more of a back story。 Still, I stuck with it and grew to like the characters, especially the friendship that evolved between Eleanor and her enemy, London。 A good, light read/listen。 The Audible narration was very good。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Stacy McAnulty is a wonderful author, but I think that I enjoyed The Miscalculations Of Lightning Girl a lot more than this one。 I admired Mack and Eleanor's friendship; she was really sweet to him, guiding him through the halls since he was blind。 At first I did not like Londyn at all, but she turned out really sweet and I really liked her。 Toward the end, Eleanor got way too obsessive about the asteroid and it was hard to read。 This book really got me thinking about the end of the world。 I'm g Stacy McAnulty is a wonderful author, but I think that I enjoyed The Miscalculations Of Lightning Girl a lot more than this one。 I admired Mack and Eleanor's friendship; she was really sweet to him, guiding him through the halls since he was blind。 At first I did not like Londyn at all, but she turned out really sweet and I really liked her。 Toward the end, Eleanor got way too obsessive about the asteroid and it was hard to read。 This book really got me thinking about the end of the world。 I'm glad that the asteroid did not hit。 。。。more

I did not know what to expect going into this book and I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed it。 It is definitely a middle grade novel but it dealt with a lot of heavier topics such as trust and family conflict and unreliable sources on the internet。 Overall a cute and fun read。

The main character, Eleanor, thinks an asteroid is going to hit Earth。 Only two scientists in the whole world are saying that and then she gets really obsessed with this asteroid。 Either she’s a gullible, naive idiot or the author couldn’t think of anything else。 It’s just so unbelievable。 Felt contrived。 Isn’t Eleanor in sixth grade??

This one picked up speed as it went along and by the end I was really immersed in the characters。 Good story of friendship and showing how not everything is as it seems from the outside looking in
