Summary

When Katy’s mother dies, she is left reeling。 Carol wasn’t just Katy’s mom, but her best friend and first phone call。 She had all the answers and now, when Katy needs her the most, she is gone。 To make matters worse, their planned mother-daughter trip of a lifetime looms: two weeks in Positano, the magical town Carol spent the summer right before she met Katy’s father。 Katy has been waiting years for Carol to take her, and now she is faced with embarking on the adventure alone。

But as soon as she steps foot on the Amalfi Coast, Katy begins to feel her mother’s spirit。 Buoyed by the stunning waters, beautiful cliffsides, delightful residents, and, of course, delectable food, Katy feels herself coming back to life。

And then Carol appears—in the flesh, healthy, sun-tanned, and thirty years old。 Katy doesn’t understand what is happening, or how—all she can focus on is that she has somehow, impossibly, gotten her mother back。 Over the course of one Italian summer, Katy gets to know Carol, not as her mother, but as the young woman before her。 She is not exactly who Katy imagined she might be, however, and soon Katy must reconcile the mother who knew everything with the young woman who does not yet have a clue。

This story methodically works through a woman's grief after losing her mother。 Katy goes on the holiday to a special place without Carol。She is mixed up and feels completely lost。 The bottom has dropped out of her world。 The only reason she has gone, is because they both made plans and an itinerary for each day, so Carol could show Katy where she felt really alive as a young woman。 Katy meets two people on this break, one of which is her mother, or rather how her mother would have been。 She sees This story methodically works through a woman's grief after losing her mother。 Katy goes on the holiday to a special place without Carol。She is mixed up and feels completely lost。 The bottom has dropped out of her world。 The only reason she has gone, is because they both made plans and an itinerary for each day, so Carol could show Katy where she felt really alive as a young woman。 Katy meets two people on this break, one of which is her mother, or rather how her mother would have been。 She sees her in a different light。 So this story continues on steadily until the end。I'm afraid to say this story didn't grab me and suck me in like some stories can, but it was ok。 As I said earlier, it was steady。。。。 If you like the sound of this story, you won't be disappointed。 If you're looking for a great story full of suspense, I'm afraid it isn't this。!Many thanks to Netgalley for the free ARC book for an honest review。#Netgalley, #quercusbooks, #rebecca_serle 。。。more

This sun-drenched novel was the perfect antidote to the howling storm outside my living room window。 Katy Silver is grieving the loss of her Mother when she decides to take the trip to Italy which they’d planned to take together。 As I was transported to Positano I thought this would be a nice, predictable romance。 But things took an interesting twist and I really enjoyed how the book explored what it means to make your own decisions in life。As Katy discovers more about her mother’s summer on the This sun-drenched novel was the perfect antidote to the howling storm outside my living room window。 Katy Silver is grieving the loss of her Mother when she decides to take the trip to Italy which they’d planned to take together。 As I was transported to Positano I thought this would be a nice, predictable romance。 But things took an interesting twist and I really enjoyed how the book explored what it means to make your own decisions in life。As Katy discovers more about her mother’s summer on the Amalfi Coast a couple of decades earlier, she discovers there was more to her mother than she realised, and that has a knock-on effect to her own identity。 I particularly liked how One Italian Summer applies the sliding doors theory to the generation before the main character, showing how her life could have changed dramatically depending on what her mother did。 Spoiler: I did question how out of character Katy acts just a day or two into her holiday。 We are painted a picture of her being incredibly sensible, reliable, loyal, and yet after a few glasses of house red she’s willing to throw caution to the wind and embark on an affair。 End of spoiler。 Overall, this was an enjoyable easy read which does a great job of making you feel like you’ve got the sun on your face and a plate of pasta in front of you。 Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more

Rebecca is a new author to me and I was not sure what to expect。 Why haven't I read more of her books as this one was an absolutely beautiful story of love, loss and hope。 You will need tissues with this book as I used a whole box up even before the end。 I found this book moved in ways I have never experienced before and I just fell in love with the story。 It swept me off my feet, I felt as though I was a part of Kate's journey。 I loved it so much。 Rebecca is a new author to me and I was not sure what to expect。 Why haven't I read more of her books as this one was an absolutely beautiful story of love, loss and hope。 You will need tissues with this book as I used a whole box up even before the end。 I found this book moved in ways I have never experienced before and I just fell in love with the story。 It swept me off my feet, I felt as though I was a part of Kate's journey。 I loved it so much。 。。。more

Following the death of her mother, who was also her best friend, Katy is at a loss。 The pair were due to embark on a long-awaited mother-daughter trip to Positano, the place where Carol spent the summer prior to meeting Katy's father。 After waiting years to journey there together, the trip looms but now Katy faces making the trip alone。Upon arriving on the Amalfi Coast, Katie is emerged in the world of her mum from all those years ago, and it's a heartbreaking reminder of what she has lost。 Unti Following the death of her mother, who was also her best friend, Katy is at a loss。 The pair were due to embark on a long-awaited mother-daughter trip to Positano, the place where Carol spent the summer prior to meeting Katy's father。 After waiting years to journey there together, the trip looms but now Katy faces making the trip alone。Upon arriving on the Amalfi Coast, Katie is emerged in the world of her mum from all those years ago, and it's a heartbreaking reminder of what she has lost。 Until by some unexpected force, Katy comes face to face with her mother – alive, healthy, and thirty years old。 For the course of one Italian summer, Katy has her mother back and she's determined to make the most of it。One Italian Summer is a magical read - not simply because Katy's mother Carol is back as a prior version of herself, but because the beautiful, picturesque Amalfi Coast of Italy is brought to life so wonderfully。 The experiences and sights and foods are tangible and believable, and it's as though you too are accompanying Katy and Carol on this unexpected adventure they're having。 It's pure escapism in literary form。Also disclaimer, this is a tearjerker, as it charts Katy's experiences of grief and loss, while also delving into the themes of regret and forgotten dreams, and even life's purpose。 It's an incredibly perceptive story that challenges the way you may look at your own life and your priorities。 It's sweet and heartfelt at times, then full of wonder and anticipation the next, before you're plunged into emotional turmoil。 It's a story that, like the waves of the Amalfi Coast, keeps rolling and changing。 Sentimental, sweet and with a summery setting - this one is a remarkable story that will stay with me for a long time。 。。。more

It was easy to get lost in & fly through the pages, making it the ideal, holiday-dreaming read for winter。The novel follows Katy, in the wake of her mother's death, on a trip to Positano which they should have taken together。 Only for her to find her mother there & on her infamous summer in Italy which she took when she was around Katy's age。 The story that unfolds is heart-warming, delightful & meaningful as it explores the depths of grief, love & the wonders of the Amalfi Coast。Rebecca Serle has a very creative writing style that has the ability to transport you in to the narrative & boy, did she do a good job with this one! With every page, I was delving deeper in to Italy & the streets of Positano or that I was drinking in the views from the path of the Gods or that I was biting down on ripe, juicy tomatoes。 Not only did she do a brilliant job with the travel front, the portrayal of Katy's grief & confusion was also raw & heart-breaking & hit right in the gut。'One Italian Summer' was a truly great read。 It's also made me desperately want to be soaking up the sunshine whilst sipping rosé wine on a balcony overlooking Positano; one day…Thank you to Netgalley, Rebecca Serle & Quercus for allowing me to read an ARC of 'One Italian Summer'; all views are honest & my own。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 3 / 3。5The writing was boring and repetitive, the characters were flat, the plot holes were frustrating (Katy cheating on her husband but not being bothered by it at all?) and Katy’s dependency on her mother throughout her life was odd and troubling in equal measure, especially when she was a grown adult woman who should be capable of making decisions for herself。 HOWEVER, I will say that it was refreshing and beautiful to read a romcom-type book where the main relationship is between a mother a 3 / 3。5The writing was boring and repetitive, the characters were flat, the plot holes were frustrating (Katy cheating on her husband but not being bothered by it at all?) and Katy’s dependency on her mother throughout her life was odd and troubling in equal measure, especially when she was a grown adult woman who should be capable of making decisions for herself。 HOWEVER, I will say that it was refreshing and beautiful to read a romcom-type book where the main relationship is between a mother and daughter。 It was wholesome and inventive and I love the casual time travel of it all。 Plus reading it made me feel like I was in sunny Positano eating fresh pasta and drinking wine rather than sitting on my couch in sweats eating pretzels while it snows outside which was an added bonus。 。。。more

Rebecca Serle's One Italian Summer grapples with themes of loss and self-discovery through the story of a woman rattled by the untimely death by her mother。 Weeks after her mother's passing, Katy travels to Positano alone to reflect and experience a place her mother had visited and loved 30 years prior。 During her trip, she runs into the younger version of her mother herself, allowing her to grow close to the woman in ways that were never possible while she was alive。 This story does strong work Rebecca Serle's One Italian Summer grapples with themes of loss and self-discovery through the story of a woman rattled by the untimely death by her mother。 Weeks after her mother's passing, Katy travels to Positano alone to reflect and experience a place her mother had visited and loved 30 years prior。 During her trip, she runs into the younger version of her mother herself, allowing her to grow close to the woman in ways that were never possible while she was alive。 This story does strong work in fleshing out a mother-daughter relationship against the backdrop of a beautiful vacation, but it does perhaps lean too heavily on Italian stereotypes and overworked plot devices。 The protagonist's love interests—her husband and an American she meets in her hotel in Italy—both leave much to be desired, so I wouldn't recommend this book to someone looking for a deep or spicy romance。 Rather, One Italian Summer works well as a relatively light read about familial love and loss if you're willing to look past certain wholly unbelievable actions of the characters (particularly Katy)。 。。。more

Having gone through an immense loss myself recently, this was such a whimsical look into the expanse of grief。 Lauren Graham does an incredible job narrating such a beautiful look at a planned trip to Italy after the death of Katie's mother。 I found this to be light, but heartbreaking as well as uplifting and sad。 It weaved itself together very nicely and had me on the brink of tears several times。 Sometimes in a great way。 Having gone through an immense loss myself recently, this was such a whimsical look into the expanse of grief。 Lauren Graham does an incredible job narrating such a beautiful look at a planned trip to Italy after the death of Katie's mother。 I found this to be light, but heartbreaking as well as uplifting and sad。 It weaved itself together very nicely and had me on the brink of tears several times。 Sometimes in a great way。 。。。more

Unfortunately, the focus shifter from her reunion with the younger version of her mom, to some kind of weird love/lust interest, which didn’t make much sense。 She was questioning her marriage but I really thought that this could have been explored through her mother’s experiences and stories instead of adding another character to spike her interest。 It just took away from the real reflective potential of the whole story and made it into a poorly done chick lit。 I just wished the focus did not shifted as it made the rest of the story less impactful。 Katy’s actions also seemed to have no consequences and a lot of the conflict blew up and was resolved in the last 20 pages… I don’t think the ending made much sense with how her feelings towards her marriage and her mom evolved over the course of the book。The depiction of food and Italy was wonderful and I was definitely transported there! I also loved the question of identity within a family and grief, however it took too much of a backseat for me and I think that if it was the main focus, it would have made me more connected to the story。 Overall, it’s not bad but it’s not great。 If you want a quick read that will transport you to Italy, then you could have a go, but it’s definitely not as reflective and focused on grief as the synopsis makes it seem to be。 。。。more

To see them in a different lens。 Before they became the person we knew and loved。 There were some things that bothered me about the story。 As sweet as this was, there was also a bit of a toxic/unhealthy co-dependency in the relationship between Katy and her Mom that made the story a bit weird。 Katy was also under such extreme grief and misses her mom so much, but once she finds her is seemingly ok with not seeing her days in a row。 It would be my sole mission to track her down。 Also, what were the pictures like when they were developed???Overall I did enjoy the book! There was a twist that I predicted, but I definitely could see it coming as a surprise for some! The magical realism is HEAVY, so if that’s not your thing, beware。 The food sounded amazing and was a character in its own, and now I desperately want to go to Italy to eat!Rounded up from 3。5 stars I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review 。。。more

I first fell in love with Italy after watching Only You (Marisa Tomei, Robert Downey Jr) as a kid。 It seemed so beautiful and romantic, I’ve always been intrigued。 Reading the descriptions of Positano in this book made me feel like I was experiencing it for myself。 This was an experience。 The writing was beautiful。 I really did feel like I experienced part of this town。 That if I went there one day, it would be familiar to me, not unknown。I struggled a bit with Katy’s relationship with her mom。 I first fell in love with Italy after watching Only You (Marisa Tomei, Robert Downey Jr) as a kid。 It seemed so beautiful and romantic, I’ve always been intrigued。 Reading the descriptions of Positano in this book made me feel like I was experiencing it for myself。 This was an experience。 The writing was beautiful。 I really did feel like I experienced part of this town。 That if I went there one day, it would be familiar to me, not unknown。I struggled a bit with Katy’s relationship with her mom。 Maybe it’s because I lost my mom at a young age but I’ve never felt that connection to someone and just couldn’t relate。 I really struggled with Adam and how that evolved。 What does that mean? How am I supposed to feel about him? It was left unresolved。While I adored the idea of Carol and the opportunity Katy had, I couldn’t wrap my brain around it。 I couldn’t think about it too hard! If I didn’t, I enjoyed it, if I did, I felt frustrated。 It ended and I realized I didn’t get closure。 I was still piecing together the story and trying to fill in gaps。 I’m left feeling unfulfilled。 Because of this, some of the magic of the book dissipated。 The infidelity was brushed away like no big deal leaving me frustrated she didn’t confront those feelings or fess up to what she’d done。The majority of this book was truly an experience that I adored。 I’m newly obsessed with all things Positano and have added it to my bucket list destinations。 Thank you to Atria Books and Shelf Awareness for the gifted copies! The book releases March 1, 2022。https://www。theopenbooks。net/2022/02/。。。 。。。more

This story is incredible in regards to the food, the sites and sounds of this incredibly gorgeous town on the Amalfi Coast。 I love how she works to understand her mom and the life she had before she was a mom。 This book comes out today 3/1/2022! 。。。more

When I first started this book I wasn’t sure it was for me。 It is super character driven with a lot of side stories which isn’t always my personal favorite。 However, Rebecca Serle did an absolutely stunning job of pulling these side stories in as memories and moving the plot forward through them。 Her writing was amazing throughout, from the descriptions of the city to the fashion to the food。 I could feel the ocean breeze and summer sun on my skin the entire time。。One Italian Summer was beautifu When I first started this book I wasn’t sure it was for me。 It is super character driven with a lot of side stories which isn’t always my personal favorite。 However, Rebecca Serle did an absolutely stunning job of pulling these side stories in as memories and moving the plot forward through them。 Her writing was amazing throughout, from the descriptions of the city to the fashion to the food。 I could feel the ocean breeze and summer sun on my skin the entire time。。One Italian Summer was beautiful in more ways than one as the storyline was so relatable as someone in their late twenties trying to find out who they are in a world full of change。 Serle explored family & romantic relationships as well as the power of friendships and how all these things come together。 。Overall I really enjoyed this emotional roller coaster of a book that may or may not have had me up in the middle of the night to finish with tears in my eyes。 I was pleasantly surprised with this one and hope if you decide to read it, you enjoy it as well。 。。。more

I think this would translate well to on screen in the vein of Only You, but with a time travel twist。

This book should be used as an Italian tourism guide。 Serle brought the Italian coastline to life and it was the best thing about the book。I struggled with Katy as a character。 Her relationship with her mother seemed so weird and wrong, overly intense and a little controlling。 It made Katy seem weak and unable to make decisions or cope with life without her mum。 I liked how she thrived in Italy but you always wonder is she really there or has she had a psychotic break and is still in the US。 I l This book should be used as an Italian tourism guide。 Serle brought the Italian coastline to life and it was the best thing about the book。I struggled with Katy as a character。 Her relationship with her mother seemed so weird and wrong, overly intense and a little controlling。 It made Katy seem weak and unable to make decisions or cope with life without her mum。 I liked how she thrived in Italy but you always wonder is she really there or has she had a psychotic break and is still in the US。 I liked the tension and the end was great, didn’t see it coming,Regardless of whether I liked the main character, I did enjoy the setting and other characters and would recommend to all my friends。Thank you Netgalley for the ARC。 。。。more

This book cut deep。 The beginning is so painful and heartbreaking and it had me crying so much。 I loved every second of this book, even the gut wrenchingly sad parts。 Katy loses her mother at the beginning of the book and decides to take the trip to Italy they had planned before her death。 Katy’s mother said that her trip to Italy when she was younger changed her life, and so Katy feels she needs to go see what her mom saw。 With some old Positano magic, she finds her mother again in Italy though This book cut deep。 The beginning is so painful and heartbreaking and it had me crying so much。 I loved every second of this book, even the gut wrenchingly sad parts。 Katy loses her mother at the beginning of the book and decides to take the trip to Italy they had planned before her death。 Katy’s mother said that her trip to Italy when she was younger changed her life, and so Katy feels she needs to go see what her mom saw。 With some old Positano magic, she finds her mother again in Italy though she is 30 years younger and has no idea who Katy is。 Katy gets to spend time with her mother again and uncovers some truths about her she never knew before。 Honestly just please give this book a read。 It made my heart ache, but it was also such a beautiful story。 It was written so well, you really feel all the emotions Katy is feeling。 I highly recommend it。Thank you so much to Netgalley and Atria Books for sending me this arc in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more
