This book is maybe the best political book I’ve ever read。 Such a complex yet concise critique of Neo-colonialism and really interestingly written with strong characters and motifs that don’t simply feel like Marxist dogma。 10/10 probably won’t read again because sad

Me ha parecido una crítica brutal al capitalismo y al colonialismo desde el punto de vista de cómo ha afectado a la realidad de Kenia。 Hay frases demoledoras y la construcción de la crítica a través de la metáfora me ha parecido muy acertada。Para mi gusto le ha faltado un poco de ritmo pero se lee fácil。 Tiene un gran valor de cara a reivindicar el africanismo del país， sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que el autor lo escribió en papel higiénico durante su estancia en prisión。

Devil on the Cross - Ngugi wa Thiong'o。This is an absolutely flawless piece of literature。 Devil on the Cross is an undisputed masterpiece， by all accounts， modern and dated。 Our story is set in Kenya， in a period where white foreigners are at the peak of their powers and labels of royalty over the black natives。 Following Jacinta Wariinga， our narrative flows from her failed suicide attempt， to riding in a taxi-bus with a group of fateful strangers， all ending up at the Devil's Feast， which is Devil on the Cross - Ngugi wa Thiong'o。This is an absolutely flawless piece of literature。 Devil on the Cross is an undisputed masterpiece， by all accounts， modern and dated。 Our story is set in Kenya， in a period where white foreigners are at the peak of their powers and labels of royalty over the black natives。 Following Jacinta Wariinga， our narrative flows from her failed suicide attempt， to riding in a taxi-bus with a group of fateful strangers， all ending up at the Devil's Feast， which is a convention held by seven wealthy foreigners to discern the best 'thieves and robbers' Kenya has to offer。 Of course， these aren't traditional crooks and criminals。 Instead， they are wealthy businessmen and professional swindlers。 This is the general gist of the story， but boy is it jam packed with twists， revelations whilst retaining its authentic， African charm。wa Thiong'o tells his story in third person， and with a lot of fourth-wall breaks that seem to indulge us readers more intimately than other books。 The first chapter denotes his struggles telling the story， and we share his pain of the retelling even before it has started。 He uses countless songs， and riddles， no doubt native to his country， to propel his message and give the people a sense of unity。 And this really works， because you grow so attached to them。 Bible scripture is not neglected in the least sense， and even a musical note is thrown in for good measure among the many profound natives scattered across the pages。 It's almost as if every line， and every sentence of dialogue is quotable。 The best part is how accessible his writing is。 Not set in the simplest of English， but the way his story is told， and the linguistic decisions he makes， all help to create a captivating story very much unexpected for a novel rooted so heavily in the topics of African oppression， capitalism and socialism。Perhaps what is the most beautiful is how the political themes are weaved in so seamlessly into the fictional narrative。 At times， you feel that you're reading pure arguments about capitalism， but with the added humanity of Gikuyu sayings， native songs and fables。 The medley of fiction， and philosophy， come together in a beautiful marriage that is not only palatable， but extremely enjoyable。 As someone who doesn't like to read novels too rooted in pure philosophy， the balance that this book achieves didn't just make me enjoy the story unfolding， but also consider the arguments and stands being presented。 It is hard to make readers inclined to agree with one idea。 Even harder to make them torn between two。As if the book could not get any more poetic， its lore offers us a good piece of information: Ngugi wa Thiong'o wrote the story on rolls of toilet paper while serving prison time。 In secrecy。 Needless to say， this was the best work of literature I have ever laid my eyes upon。 Six stars， out of five。 。。。more
