In July 2010， Wikileaks published Cablegate， one of the biggest leaks in the history of the US military， including evidence for war crimes and torture。 In the aftermath Julian Assange， the founder and spokesman of Wikileaks， found himself at the centre of a media storm， accused of hacking and later sexual assault。 He spent the next seven years in asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy in London， fearful that he would be extradited to Sweden to face the accusations of assault and then sent to US。 In 2019， Assange was handed over to the British police and， on the same day， the U。S。 demanded his extradition。 They threatened him with up to 175 years in prison for alleged espionage and computer fraud。
At this point， Nils Melzer， UN Special Rapporteur on Torture， started his investigation into how the US and UK governments were working together to ensure a conviction。 His findings are explosive， revealing that Assange has faced grave and systematic due process violations， judicial bias， collusion and manipulated evidence。 He has been the victim of constant surveillance， defamation and threats。 Melzer also gathered together consolidated medical evidence that proves that the prison has suffered prolonged psychological torture。

Ein Buch so spannend wie der beste Krimi， jedoch leider nicht fiktiv。Ich denke jede Person hat schon mal von Julian Assange gehört， man kam vor allem zu Zeiten diverser Wikileaks Veröffentlichungen nicht um ihn herum， aber auch durch sein Asyl in der ecuadorianischen Botschaft in London und seine Festnahme tauchte er immer wieder in den Medien auf。Viele， so auch ich， hatten kein allzu gutes Bild von Assange。 Wikileaks selbst ist super und unfassbar wichtig für die notwendige Transparenz in unser Ein Buch so spannend wie der beste Krimi， jedoch leider nicht fiktiv。Ich denke jede Person hat schon mal von Julian Assange gehört， man kam vor allem zu Zeiten diverser Wikileaks Veröffentlichungen nicht um ihn herum， aber auch durch sein Asyl in der ecuadorianischen Botschaft in London und seine Festnahme tauchte er immer wieder in den Medien auf。Viele， so auch ich， hatten kein allzu gutes Bild von Assange。 Wikileaks selbst ist super und unfassbar wichtig für die notwendige Transparenz in unserer Demokratie。 Aber Assange？ Das ist doch der narzisstische Vergewaltiger der in der Botschaft nur Ärger macht。Genau das ist das Bild， das die schwedische， britische， amerikanische und später auch ecuadorianische Regierung von ihm zeichnen möchte - und auch erfolgreich gezeichnet hat。Nils Melzer， Sonderberichterstatter der UNO für Folter setzt genau da an und räumt diesen Fall von vorne bis hinten auf; er selber hat den Fall intensiv begleitet。Die Inhalte dieses Buches würde ich kaum glauben können wenn ich nicht wüsste wer es geschrieben hat。 Es wird ein Vorwand nach dem nächsten ausgegraben um Assange in die Ecke zu treiben， auflaufen zu lassen und schließlich sogar Asyl zu suchen。 Dass gerade die sonst so erhabenen Demokratien wie Großbritannien und die USA hier sämtliches Völkerrecht mit Füßen treten und alles dafür tun um an Assange ein Exempel zu statuieren lässt mich teilweise mit offenem Mund zurück。Nils Melzer hatte ich zuvor im Interview bei Jung & Naiv gehört und bin erfreut， dass sich seine angenehme Art und Erzählweise auch in dieses Buch übertragen hat。 Er berichtet sachlich， genau und mit der nötigen Dringlichkeit。Ich empfehle jedem dieses Buch zu lesen， der/die sich für Rechtsstaatlichkeit und einen Blick hinter die Kulissen interessiert。 Vor allem， da der Fall Assange aktuell noch immer nicht endgültig geklärt ist - ganz im Interesse der USA und UK - und somit einen gute Überblick über die bisherigen Ereignisse liefert。 Denn wie Melzer im Epiloge richtig sagt geht nicht nur um Assange sondern um viel mehr: "Es geht um das Versagen von rechtsstaatlich-demokratischen Institutionen， deren Funktionstüchtigkeit und Vertrauenswürdigkeit vom Durchschnittsbürger in der Regel nie infrage gestellt werden。" 。。。more
