Summary

Well, I gave it a 5 star review because it was the perfect ghost story。 The character development was top notch👏。 I could perfectly picture the main character and felt as if I've known her, we've all known a girl like her。 A flower floating beautifully in life, sheltered and bored with it at times。 But it wasn't in a shallow way, so much as in an unchallenged way。 Anyway, the premise is of a Mexican socialite in the 1950s, she receives a mysterious letter from a cousin who recently married and m Well, I gave it a 5 star review because it was the perfect ghost story。 The character development was top notch👏。 I could perfectly picture the main character and felt as if I've known her, we've all known a girl like her。 A flower floating beautifully in life, sheltered and bored with it at times。 But it wasn't in a shallow way, so much as in an unchallenged way。 Anyway, the premise is of a Mexican socialite in the 1950s, she receives a mysterious letter from a cousin who recently married and moved to the distant countryside。 A little disturbed by the letter, she embarks on a trip to check on her wellbeing。 When she gets there, she soon realizes she has fallen mysteriously ill And is at the mercy of her new husband's odd family。 Entrapped within a seemingly haunted large and beautiful old house, she feels herself going mad。 But not trusting them,, she refuses to leave without her cousin。 As the story progresses, she finds the root of "the haunting" and with the aid of a dissenting family member, tries to make things right and free themselves of the families strange, but really strong hold。 Also, there's ALOT of mushroom talk and being a huge Stan of Fantastic Fungi, I was here for it。 I absolutely loved this story, it had its slow moments, it's complex moments that make you reread and even fact check haha, but it's so worth pushing through。 It's a creative work of psychologically thrilling gothic literature。 。。。more

Okay, loved the first half, hated the second。 It had all the makings of a creepy ghost story, but then it went weird fungus hive mind。 Not a fan of the second half AT ALL。

I am not sure I get all the hype on this。 It wasn’t very scary or spooky。 I didn’t get why Noemí spent so little time with her cousin, the whole reason she was there。 I was more annoyed with everyone throughout this book than anything else。

a very well done book of slow dread, creepy stuff, and grotesque elements。 i loved this book and its themes of colonization, eugenics, and the ties that bind。 honestly i’m speechless, it was THAT good。

Like the mold that grows throughout the walls of High Place, this story also spreads slowly, creeping in the background until it’s suddenly consuming the main character and reader alike, leaving both feeling like there is no escape。I’m a huge fan of books that have an unsettling atmosphere throughout, only to suddenly give me a double take, where I’m asking myself "did I just read what I think I read?" Mexican Gothic has plenty of this, and for that reason I give it a full five stars。 Like the mold that grows throughout the walls of High Place, this story also spreads slowly, creeping in the background until it’s suddenly consuming the main character and reader alike, leaving both feeling like there is no escape。I’m a huge fan of books that have an unsettling atmosphere throughout, only to suddenly give me a double take, where I’m asking myself "did I just read what I think I read?" This is the first book in a long time that’s been able to actually keep my attention。 Filled with incredible and beautifully written detail it was easy to descend into the world of High Place and the mind of Noemí Taboada。 This is a story of horror and desire, the fears of familiarity, and our longing to outrun the possibilities of inevitability。

I did pick this book because the cover。。 it’s pretty! I am glad I did! It was such an interesting read and I’m into the dark gothic and a mix of The Yellow Wallpaper feel it gave me。

Did I pick up on this book because the main character's name is closely the same as mine? I LOVED THIS BOOK。An atmospheric Gothic horror novel that goes the extra mile with featuring women of color as the protagonists and incorporating race, colonialism, and eugenics as part of the horror。 I enjoyed Noemi's flighty and outspoken nature as well; she’s easy to root for as she stands her own against the antagonists。 I LOVED THIS BOOK。An atmospheric Gothic horror novel that goes the extra mile with featuring women of color as the protagonists and incorporating race, colonialism, and eugenics as part of the horror。 I enjoyed Noemi's flighty and outspoken nature as well; she’s easy to root for as she stands her own against the antagonists。 。。。more

The reviews for this are really all over the place but I would say this is definitely worth the read if the plot interests you!! Spooky yet elegant vibes with a great main character。

Mexican Gothic felt like a bit of a slow start but I think I had a different idea of where the story was going。 Once I let go of expectations and allowed the story to unfold, I couldn't put it down。 Mexican Gothic felt like a bit of a slow start but I think I had a different idea of where the story was going。 Once I let go of expectations and allowed the story to unfold, I couldn't put it down。 。。。more

3。5 rounded up — I wasn’t the best fan of this book, but I think it accomplished what it set out to do。 Very much gothic horror — disturbing and disgusting and kept you on edge。 And it was really interesting to see it in this Mexican setting as well。 The beginning was extremely slow, but once you figure out the mechanism of the story about halfway through, it moves faster。 The other thing that made me extremely uncomfortable were the graphic descriptions of sexual assault — I guess that was the 3。5 rounded up — I wasn’t the best fan of this book, but I think it accomplished what it set out to do。 Very much gothic horror — disturbing and disgusting and kept you on edge。 And it was really interesting to see it in this Mexican setting as well。 The beginning was extremely slow, but once you figure out the mechanism of the story about halfway through, it moves faster。 The other thing that made me extremely uncomfortable were the graphic descriptions of sexual assault — I guess that was the point, but… ugh。 It was awful to sit through。 Don’t know if I would completely recommend this one。 The reader was not great。 She was one of those readers who prize enunciation above everything, with no intonation or emotion at all。 Honestly it toned down this graphic book and made it more boring than it certainly was。 Also could not really do voices。 。。。more

A very interesting concept with lots of great aesthetic vibes。 This book does a great job of using classic gothic themes to examine racism and colonialism。 There's plenty of slow, creeping dread and a surprising reveal of an unusual evil。My big complaint would just be the characterization。 I feel like seeing things through Noemi's eyes would be a lot more interesting if she had character traits beyond "likes to party but isn't dumb。" Furthermore, her relationship with Francis drives so much of t A very interesting concept with lots of great aesthetic vibes。 This book does a great job of using classic gothic themes to examine racism and colonialism。 There's plenty of slow, creeping dread and a surprising reveal of an unusual evil。My big complaint would just be the characterization。 I feel like seeing things through Noemi's eyes would be a lot more interesting if she had character traits beyond "likes to party but isn't dumb。" Furthermore, her relationship with Francis drives so much of the plot, but he has no personality beyond "thinks mushrooms are sorta cool。"So much of gothic literature is about grand, sweeping emotions, but most of the characters are too one-note to experience any deep feelings。 。。。more

RTCMid-read thoughts: The Doyles are creepy, incestuous, and racist。 I hope Catalina and Noemi survive。 I understand Noemi not being a quitter and not wanting to leave her cousin alone but that creepy family, mold, and weird visions, would be enough to make a lot of people run away。

Ugh! This book had such potential。 The setting was very English (despite being set in Mexico) with a gothic novel feel and an underlying spooky element。 You don’t know what exactly the spookiness is until 2/3 of the way in and when you find out what that element is, it’s such a let down。 The end got a little bit more exciting, but overall this was a dud!
