Summary

Crush (n。): a strong and often short-lived infatuation, particularly for someone beyond your reach 。 。 。

Darcy Barrett has undertaken a global survey of men。 She's travelled the world, and can categorically say that no one measures up to Tom Valeska, whose only flaw is that he's her twin brother's best friend - oh, and that 99 percent of the time, he hasn't seemed interested in her。 That's the problem with finding her dream man at age eight and peaking in her photography career at age twenty - ever since, she's had to learn to settle for good enough。

When Darcy and Jamie inherit a tumble-down cottage from their grandmother, they're left with strict instructions to bring it back to its former glory and sell the property。 Darcy plans to be in an aisle seat halfway across the ocean as soon as the renovations start, but before she can cut and run, she finds a familiar face on her porch: house-flipper extraordinaire Tom's arrived, he's bearing power tools, and he's single for the first time in almost a decade。

Suddenly Darcy's considering sticking around - just to make sure her twin doesn't ruin the cottage's inherent magic with his penchant for chrome。 She's definitely not staying because of her new business partner's tight t-shirts, or that perfect face that's inspiring her to pick up her camera again。 But sparks start to fly - and not just because of the faulty wiring。 Soon, a one percent chance with Tom is no longer enough。 This time around, Darcy's switching things up。 She's going to make Tom Valeska 99 percent hers。

Loved this story! I hope Sally Thorne will continue to write more。 If I could give a 4。5 star rating I would due to the writing style。 It was a bit hard to follow at times and I caught myself rereading certain passages to figure out how they went from one place to the next。 Some of the details were lost making it harder to paint the scene。 The relationship between Tom and Darcy makes up for it in the end with the endless banter between the two and the lifelong friendship/ relationship they creat Loved this story!

Wow, are the reviews for this one mixed! While the dialogue was a little confusing, and I admit that I had to reread a lot just to be sure that I knew who was saying what, I found this book to be a lot of fun! The inner and outer dialogue is blended, so it does take some getting used to, but I was on the edge of my seat and could barely sit still anticipating Darcy and Tom's every move! 4 stars! I didn’t love this story。 I did find some things funny/cute, but even the parts that struck a chord felt a bit lacking。To me, the most emotionally compelling aspect was not the friends-to-lovers romance, but Darcy’s attachment to her late grandmother’s house。 There wasn’t a lot of content on their relationship, though, or on the way Darcy is processing her loss。 And I think a deeper portrayal would’ve been more satisfying than a simple nod to grief here & there。As for the romance, I didn’t alway I didn’t love this story。 I did find some things funny/cute, but even the parts that struck a chord felt a bit lacking。To me, the most emotionally compelling aspect was not the friends-to-lovers romance, but Darcy’s attachment to her late grandmother’s house。 There wasn’t a lot of content on their relationship, though, or on the way Darcy is processing her loss。 And I think a deeper portrayal would’ve been more satisfying than a simple nod to grief here & there。As for the romance, I didn’t always feel invested in the couple。 Especially not after something I’d consider a betrayal goes down。 But even getting past that (and the fact that they are possibly a toxic level of possessive) there are inconsistencies that make it hard to understand the problem with them being together in the first place。 The most confusing revelation involves Tom declaring that he’s always known Darcy loved him。 If that’s true, then they both know their feelings are reciprocated from the jump, and what’s the point of the book in that case? We are left to speculate。 (view spoiler)[I assumed the reason Tom brushes Darcy off is cause he thinks she just wants him for sex, but if he’s aware he means more to her, why does he hold her at arm’s length for so long? Cause he’s afraid she’ll leave? Cause he doesn’t think he’s good enough? What changes? (hide spoiler)]Besides that, the setting is vague, the pacing is iffy, and there isn’t a well defined plot。 I wish I could say the characters are the book’s saving grace, but that’s not necessarily true。At first, Darcy (who narrates the story) seems more like a caricature than a character。 But that might just be cause she isn’t the face she puts on。 She likes to act like nothing gets to her but really she’s just trying to pass all her self defense mechanisms off as personality。 Relatable, but although Darcy can be both kind and witty, her default is obnoxious and immature。 So I wouldn’t exactly call her loveable。 As a person who cares for someone with a heart condition, I found the way she pushes herself super triggering。 But as scary and frustrating as it is, many people struggle to cope with their body’s limits in a similar way。Tom is good when he’s good, as well。 His occasional shyness is adorable and the way he takes care of Darcy is very sweet。 But for someone so intuitive and supposedly compassionate, he seems to have a hard time recognizing that just because someone’s feelings differ from his, doesn’t mean they’re wrong。 Also, he likes to point fingers and he gets mean when he’s mad。 In a few instances, he basically slut shames Darcy because he’s embarrassed by his own need。 And what’s worse… (view spoiler)[In the beginning, Tom acts like it’s so important to him that Darcy be on board with everything because he knows how much the place means to her。 But later, he tricks her out of the house so he can get rid of the wall with the fireplace that she told everyone not to mess with。 Then he tries to get her permission retroactively, but the plan blows up in his face。 And the fool responds by making excuses and talking down to Darcy like she’s dumb for even caring。 He’s “not used to having emotions attached to a house… or more than one person to ask。” But he “knew this was the right thing for the renovation”。 So naturally, Darcy apologizes (sarcastically) for inconveniencing him with her feelings and tells Tom the wall wasn’t his to knock down。 He refuses to admit it was unprofessional, though, and proceeds to turn the conversation back towards himself and his feelings。Okay, I know Tom isn’t a real person… but I am still so annoyed that this 🖕🏼 is the moment he chooses to pull his sob story out of his ass。 Some of it isn’t actually relevant to him tearing down the fireplace wall and none of it changes the fact that he went about things wrong。 But Darcy’s just like wow, he’s finally opening up。 So even though Tom’s just hurt his so-called love, instead of trying to understand and support her in the aftermath, he shames her for being upset and puts her in the position to reassure him that he’s a great guy and that everything is gonna be alright。 And all of this leads up to them fucking?…let’s recap: Tom does a shady, disrespectful thing and destroys something precious to Darcy for the sake of money。 Yes, they need the money, and yes, he apologizes。 But mostly because he gets caught。 And despite all that, he has the audacity to call Darcy out for not trusting him。 But somehow the whole confrontation culminates with Darcy feeling so lucky to be in bed with Tom she could cry? Bullshit。 I mean, I know people do/think nonsensical shit like that all the time, but it still pisses me off。 (hide spoiler)]As for Jamie, he makes little sense to me。 He’s a major dick majority of the time so even though it feels absolutely right that he should do certain things without fail—like fly in for Darcy’s heart appointments even when she says he doesn’t need to—it’s sort of jarring when he shows that he cares。 (view spoiler)[And messed up that he got Truly to “report” to him on Darcy’s health。 (hide spoiler)]However, part of me wonders if I should really fault these characters for contradicting themselves in human ways。 When I say they fall short… I guess I mean that in the way that me & mine also do。So regardless of the many issues ranted on above, I still think this is a three star book。 The storytelling is messy and it’s missing some elements, but for a rom com, it’s raw in an interesting way。 I wouldn’t call it a must read, but it can be touching at times, and even a bit of dizzy fun。 。。。more

I don’t understand why this book has such a low rating。 I really enjoyed it and thought that the story was so well put together。 I came to really like both Darcy and Tom and just when I thought I knew what would happen next it got pushed back just a little more。 My one complaint was that the two mains would get upset with each other so quick and then get over it within the next breath。 It didn’t seem as if there were any repercussions to there actions。 Overall I thought this was such a great and I don’t understand why this book has such a low rating。 I really enjoyed it and thought that the story was so well put together。 I came to really like both Darcy and Tom and just when I thought I knew what would happen next it got pushed back just a little more。 My one complaint was that the two mains would get upset with each other so quick and then get over it within the next breath。 It didn’t seem as if there were any repercussions to there actions。 Overall I thought this was such a great and unique story that was shared and I can’t wait to catch up to the crowd and read The Hating Game! 。。。more

I picked this one up based on having audiobooked The Hating Game。 I hoped for the same lighthearted comedy feel, but this one is not even remotely like that。 Darcy is this angsty, wannabe badass bent on self-destruction。 She’s immature, whiny and sometimes a bitch, especially to Tom, the love interest in this book。 Tom is sometimes aloof and not very communicative in an effort to protect Darcy because apparently, she is really a pretty princess in need of protecting。 The whole set up is super an I picked this one up based on having audiobooked The Hating Game。 I hoped for the same lighthearted comedy feel, but this one is not even remotely like that。 Darcy is this angsty, wannabe badass bent on self-destruction。 She’s immature, whiny and sometimes a bitch, especially to Tom, the love interest in this book。 Tom is sometimes aloof and not very communicative in an effort to protect Darcy because apparently, she is really a pretty princess in need of protecting。 The whole set up is super annoying。 Add to that, that these characters already have history and as readers we’re kind of thrown into the relationship and not much is explained。 The portion of the story I listened too felt that way through out- like I was thrown in without any context。 I don’t know if it was the way the narrator was reading or if it was the writing, but Darcy’s inner thoughts and the dialogue all blended together leading to a whole lot of confusion and rewinding。 I don’t know if things get revealed and quite honestly I don’t care。 At about 38% of the way into this book I had to throw in the towel。 I couldn’t take the angsty annoying characters topped with the narrator who sounded like Kim Kardashian reading an audiobook (the vocal fry is strong in this one!)。 Moving on to something more enjoyable。 。。。more

I found it hard to get into this book。 I found it hard to connect with Darcy and Tom and just the way they talked sometimes was hard to follow and enjoy。 Darcy sometimes referred to Tom being like a wolf and sometimes it came across like she thought he was more animal than human。 For me, it just missed the mark and I didn't care for that aspect。 However, there were things I did enjoy about the book。 Darcy in herself is a really neat character。 She has had a lot of hard times in her life (health I found it hard to get into this book。 I found it hard to connect with Darcy and Tom and just the way they talked sometimes was hard to follow and enjoy。 Darcy sometimes referred to Tom being like a wolf and sometimes it came across like she thought he was more animal than human。 For me, it just missed the mark and I didn't care for that aspect。 However, there were things I did enjoy about the book。 Darcy in herself is a really neat character。 She has had a lot of hard times in her life (health issues) but she never let them bring her down。 I loved how important her grandmother's house was to her and how even though it might not be the best for her health, she stuck with helping renovate the house and kept everyone in line。 She also had a wicked sense of humour and never let anyone push her around。 Tom, for his part was a gruff guy and had his own issues to work through, but I loved how he always had the best intentions in mind for Darcy。 Their relationship was a slow build and in parts the book dragged on but overall it is a good read, just missed the mark for me。 。。。more

I feel like I liked the writing of this book way more than the actual book itself。 Unfortunately a lot in this book turned me off - from how the heroine was so full of self-loathing and immature, to the over-the-top alpha dialogue, to how some parts jumped many months ahead in the span of a paragraph without giving readers adequate information about what happened in the passing of time。 Those parts were strange to read。 While I love a good childhood friends to lovers trope, I expected so much mo I feel like I liked the writing of this book way more than the actual book itself。 Unfortunately a lot in this book turned me off - from how the heroine was so full of self-loathing and immature, to the over-the-top alpha dialogue, to how some parts jumped many months ahead in the span of a paragraph without giving readers adequate information about what happened in the passing of time。 Those parts were strange to read。 While I love a good childhood friends to lovers trope, I expected so much more and ended up a bit disappointed。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I really loved The Hating Game。 I wanted to love this book too but unfortunately it was just hard to get through。 Maybe it is because I “read” the audiobook but I frequently got confused about the timeline。 It seems like it would jump weeks or months without explanation。 I also found the characters one note and pretty annoying, especially Darcey’s twin who was an a-hole that I kept thinking would get redeemed, but just remained an a-hole in the end。 I don’t think I would recommend this one。

I loved The Hating Game, and when I say loved, I really do mean LOVED。 In fact, I've talked others' ears off about it several times。 I've read the book several times, more than I have logged on Goodreads at least。 It's just a book that I want to keep revisiting over and over again because it has everything I want and I everything I didn't know I wanted in a romance。 It may also be possible that it was one of the first contemporary romances I had ever read, so its impacts on me were so much great I loved The Hating Game, and when I say loved, I really do mean LOVED。 In fact, I've talked others' ears off about it several times。 I've read the book several times, more than I have logged on Goodreads at least。 It's just a book that I want to keep revisiting over and over again because it has everything I want and I everything I didn't know I wanted in a romance。 It may also be possible that it was one of the first contemporary romances I had ever read, so its impacts on me were so much greater。Given the success of such a beautiful novel, I was reluctant to pick up 99 Precent Mine, especially since there were mixed reviews for it。 Anddd I'm not sure what to say。 I can't even really describe what I felt when I was reading the book。 I just know that it felt like a bit of a mission? I was eager to finish reading the book just because I wanted to finish it, but I didn't feel the satisfaction that I normally like to feel upon the completion of a solid romance。 It was just an okay book。 And honestly, I feel terrible saying this because Sally Thorne had quite the shoes to fill。 She created a sonic boom of a novel and living up to the expectations that The Hating Game set is challenging and daunting, no doubt。I guess I'm just wishing that I could find another book as great as that。I know that this review has turned out to be a review of The Hating Game more than 99 Percent Mine。 But every time I hear Sally Thorne's name, that masterpiece of a creation comes to mind。I don't know if Sally Thorne will ever create a book as good as The Hating Game again, and that's not necessarily a bad thing。 The reason why everyone praises the novel so much is because it's so special, and it wouldn't be special if it could be so easily replicated。 So I guess what I'm saying is a big fat Thank You to Sally Thorne。 I know this book wasn't what I hoped it would be, but that's okay。 I'll keep reading her novels nonetheless and keep hoping for something as special as the Lucy-Josh dynamic that we have all come to love。 。。。more
