Summary

Enter the dark and sensual realms of the Black Jewels, a world where power always has a price, in this sweeping story in the New York Times bestselling fantasy saga。

They are Warlord Princes, men born to serve and protect。 They are the Queen's Weapons, men born to destroy the Queen's enemies--no matter what face that enemy wears。

Daemonar Yaslana knows how to be bossy yet supportive--traits he shares with his father, the Demon Prince, and his uncle, the High Lord of Hell。 Within his generation of the family, he assumes the role of protector, supporting his sister Titian’s artistic efforts and curbing his cousin Jaenelle Saetien’s more adventurous ideas。 But when a young Eyrien Queen, someone Titian thought was a friend, inflicts an emotional wound, Daemonar's counterattack brings him under the tutelage of Witch, the Queen whose continued existence is known only to a select few。

As Daemonar is confronted by troubling changes within and around the family, he sees warnings that a taint in the Blood might be reappearing。 Daemonar, along with his father and uncle, must uncover the source of a familiar evil--and Daemon Sadi, the High Lord of Hell, may be forced into making a terrible choice。

a very interesting saga, The Black Jewels。 But, am ready to move on!

The original Black Jewels trilogy is an all-time favorite of mine, particularly because of its powerful, kick-ass women and its themes of female dominance and sadomasochism。 Yes, it was dark and problematic, and hardly what one would call a feel-good fantasy, but the gender dynamic was important to me, a significant shift from most of the fantasy I was reading。The Queen's Bargain marked a significant departure from that subject matter and those themes, but I didn't realize how much of a departur The original Black Jewels trilogy is an all-time favorite of mine, particularly because of its powerful, kick-ass women and its themes of female dominance and sadomasochism。 Yes, it was dark and problematic, and hardly what one would call a feel-good fantasy, but the gender dynamic was important to me, a significant shift from most of the fantasy I was reading。The Queen's Bargain marked a significant departure from that subject matter and those themes, but I didn't realize how much of a departure until I was about halfway through The Queen's Weapons。 Anne Bishop has gender-flipped and subverted her own work, not only restoring the traditional fantasy patriarchy, but reducing women to being defined as the daughters and wives of men, making them powerless in the face of uncontrollable male sexual heat, and demonstrating deplorable cruelty towards them - including rape and psychological assault。Sadly, for a book that should be exploring the larger threats of a taint in the Blood and the source of a familiar evil, this is mostly relegated to emotional wounds - it's basically Mean Girls with magic, focused on a bunch of spoiled brat teenagers who are obsessed with their social standing。 It's soap operaish to the extreme, and there's such a massive shift in personalities and motives from the first half to the second that I really began to wonder if my book was a misprint that was missing something significant。 Add to that some absolutely deplorable decisions made regarding family dynamics, the brutal breaking of bonds between mothers and daughters, and I began to wonder why I was still reading at all。The Queen's Weapons isn't necessarily a bad book, if it's what you're looking for (or willing to settle for), it's just not up to the standards of earlier in the series。https://beauty-in-ruins。blogspot。com/。。。 。。。more

Loved the world, loved the writing, but I absolutely hated what Daemon and Surreal's relationship had turned into and was upset that their parenting was unable to prevent Jaenelle Saetan from crashing and burning from bad influences。Ignoring the plot decisions that I really disliked, I think the book would have been better if it had been developed into a full multi-book series instead of one giant fat book。 The Orian/Dorian mini-plot cut off pretty abruptly, and I would have enjoyed reading more Loved the world, loved the writing, but I absolutely hated what Daemon and Surreal's relationship had turned into and was upset that their parenting was unable to prevent Jaenelle Saetan from crashing and burning from bad influences。Ignoring the plot decisions that I really disliked, I think the book would have been better if it had been developed into a full multi-book series instead of one giant fat book。 The Orian/Dorian mini-plot cut off pretty abruptly, and I would have enjoyed reading more about the kindred and their roles in properly teaching the next generation。 。。。more

This book is like a good second book in a trilogy。 Sometimes it seemed too wordy and at other times it was like slipping into a familiar warm bed on a cold night。 I still love the characters。

Not one for new readers to the series and probably the epitome of a guilty pleasure read for me。。。

I purchased this book not realizing it was the last in the series。 I was immediately swept into the Black Jewel world and thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the storyline。 I loved how even though this was the most recent book written, I wasn’t lost at all。 I went through a roller coaster of emotions with this story。 I loved Daemon, Luciver, Surreal, and Daemonar。 Wasn’t very fond of Jannelle Saestien。 The plot was well developed and the writing and editing were exceptional。

Let me start off with that I am a major fan of Anne Bishop's books and the Black Jewels serious。 This book left me in a lot of emotional states and there are somethings I wish went a different way but I respect the authors choices and I am not unhappy with the ending。 I thought the book had a great pace and I love the voice and depth that Anne gives to her characters。 If you are new to the Black Jewels books I would not start with this one as it will spoil the ending for the earlier books and gi Let me start off with that I am a major fan of Anne Bishop's books and the Black Jewels serious。 This book left me in a lot of emotional states and there are somethings I wish went a different way but I respect the authors choices and I am not unhappy with the ending。 I thought the book had a great pace and I love the voice and depth that Anne gives to her characters。 If you are new to the Black Jewels books I would not start with this one as it will spoil the ending for the earlier books and gives a lot of shout outs to previous characters from the earlier books。 I am not sure if Anne intends to do another book or a follow up but I would like to see some closure on Surreal and Jillian's character plot lines。 Overall a great book but probably not one I will pick up and reread regularly due to the emotional toll。 。。。more

One day I’ll write a review for this whole series and how it went from amazing to complete crap…but that day isn’t going to be anytime soon。 I’m still so fucking pissed。 😡🤬😡🤬I feel like Bishop isn’t entirely done with this series, and I’m so scared to see how much more damage will happen。 😔

A Black Jewels book with all the darkness that entails。 Interesting to see Daemonar take his place as a warrior/weapon alongside Lucivar and Daemon。

I guess Surreal is not the villain anymore - not only Bishop goes full on friends-more-than-lovers for Daemon/Surreal, makes us feel sorry for S。 because her daughter is a mean bitch and made even me feel quite protective about Surreal(!), and also the whole negative attention i focused on JS。 Mother Night, that brat was awful。 At least she had enough sense to not let Dorothea II meet any Scelties。 Oh, and Surreal (i can't belive i'm saying that) finally feels like canon!Surreal, not that teenag I guess Surreal is not the villain anymore - not only Bishop goes full on friends-more-than-lovers for Daemon/Surreal, makes us feel sorry for S。 because her daughter is a mean bitch and made even me feel quite protective about Surreal(!), and also the whole negative attention i focused on JS。 Mother Night, that brat was awful。 At least she had enough sense to not let Dorothea II meet any Scelties。 Oh, and Surreal (i can't belive i'm saying that) finally feels like canon!Surreal, not that teenage!Surreal obsessed with one thing o。o in "The Queen's Bargain"。 She'll never be among my favorite characters, but damn wasn't it refreshing to see her mostly normal。 Despite the slow, slow beginning I'm mostly happy with this book - we got more Sadist, we got more Witch, we got more Sadist and the Witch ;) but i guess i'll be the happiest when i start rereading the original trilogy for Halloween。 And after #3 i'll just imagine everyone are fine, alive, happy etc。 I guess there will be at least one more book (to make it trilogy and to show us what happens to Daemon, my poor bby, and Witch and Jillian+Daemonar+Titian Jr+Zoey and others)I do have some troubles rating those two recent books。 I liked Weapons better than Bargain, so i guess i'll just lower the previous one to 3 stars? 。。。more

Sometimes I forget how much I love reading, but authors like Anne Bishop help me remember。 She has a gift for giving common drama uncommon gravity。 Her worlds are rich and compelling, and give you cause to rethink how you view our world's parallels。 This book was another fine foray into the realm of the Blood, and it made it hard to come up for air。 Sometimes I forget how much I love reading, but authors like Anne Bishop help me remember。 She has a gift for giving common drama uncommon gravity。 Her worlds are rich and compelling, and give you cause to rethink how you view our world's parallels。 This book was another fine foray into the realm of the Blood, and it made it hard to come up for air。 。。。more

The first part of the book was just sort of a domestic interlude--we see how all of the SaDiablo family members interact together and get a baseline established。 There's not a lot of action, but it's kinda nice to just hang out with everyone。 Then fast forward a few centuries, and the girls are now the equivalent of high schoolers, eager to go to boarding school (though with very different motives。) Jaenelle falls in with the ultimate mean girls。 I found it very believable that, given how shelte The first part of the book was just sort of a domestic interlude--we see how all of the SaDiablo family members interact together and get a baseline established。 There's not a lot of action, but it's kinda nice to just hang out with everyone。 Then fast forward a few centuries, and the girls are now the equivalent of high schoolers, eager to go to boarding school (though with very different motives。) Jaenelle falls in with the ultimate mean girls。 I found it very believable that, given how sheltered she's been and how inferior she feels compared to her namesake, that she could fall victim to girls trying to push her to feel "special"。 Their evil scheme made me want to go back and read the early books again, since it's very much based on that history。 There's some repetition as we swap back and forth among several view points, but the final showdown is satisfyingly explosive (and bloody)。 。。。more

Good and BadThis book follows a similar format to the other books in the series。 Unfortunately there are too many slow bits and long build ups to make it an unmissable read。 It looks like it may be the 2nd book in a trilogy so we will have to see what comes next

This review will contain SPOILERS! Please don't read it if you have not read the book or you don't want to know some things - IMPORTANT THINGS! - that happen。Before I start I just have to say that Anne Bishop is one of my favorite authors。 I've read every book she has written and I love the Black Jewels series。 Now that that is out of the way, I did enjoy this book but I had some issues with it。 Okay, I had a LOT of issues with it。 I just hope I can remember all of them now that the book is read This review will contain SPOILERS! Please don't read it if you have not read the book or you don't want to know some things - IMPORTANT THINGS! - that happen。Before I start I just have to say that Anne Bishop is one of my favorite authors。 I've read every book she has written and I love the Black Jewels series。 Now that that is out of the way, I did enjoy this book but I had some issues with it。 Okay, I had a LOT of issues with it。 I just hope I can remember all of them now that the book is read。 LOL!I was irritated that they were constantly using two names for daughter Jaenelle。 I know why they were doing it。 It was to differentiate between daughter Jaenelle and Queen Jaenelle, but it seems like they could have done something different like call her by her initials JS or a nickname like Jane or Jess or middle name or really just about anything else。 I just can't imagine constantly calling my daughter by her first and middle name and referring to her all the time as "Brooke Taylor" when I'm discussing her。 This was a minor issue and did not effect my review of this book but it DID get on my nerves! This was another minor thing but it just did not make sense to me。 There was mention of Lucivar tearing a man apart for telling a lie but then nothing was done to the man who killed his wife because "murder isn't a crime for the blood。" Okay so MURDER isn't a crime and deserves no punishment but LYING deserves death? In what world does that make sense???Jaenelle。 Oh poor Jaenelle! And I do mean that。 Yes, she was bratty。 These were her teenage years and many teenagers are bratty。 I just don't think she deserved everything that happened to her。 Teenagers aren't mature and often don't make mature decisions。 This is true of not all but many teenagers。 It takes a long time for a brain to fully mature and until it does impulses are high and mistakes are made。Witch and Tersa both knew what was going to happen but no one tried to save Jaenelle? Really? EVERYONE, except Jaenelle of course, was suspicious of Delora and co but NO ONE did anything? Didn't keep Jaenelle away from them? Didn't pull her out of the school? WHY??? This was your child and you basically threw her away。Surreal and Jaenelle - Jaenelle finds out Surreal used to be a whore and disowns her。 Okay。 Hurtful for sure BUT why didn't she already know??? Why would her parents not have discussed their pasts with her? Obviously there were reasons why Surreal did what she did。 Why did no one explain any of that? Now because your teenager disowned you you are not her mother anymore? WHAT??? The bond is broken forever and can never be fixed! WHAT??? Kids can be hurtful。 My daughter hurt me badly when she was 17 or so。 Our relationship changed and still isn't quite the same but she is still my daughter。 I still love her。 There is always hope。 You never say welp I'm not a mother anymore。 Bond is broken。 This can never be fixed。 That part floored me。So they let Jaenelle have the house party。 Even knowing that bad things are going to happen。 And then they even leave, also while knowing bad things are going to happen。 And then of course the bad things happen (as everyone knew they would) and in the end Jaenelle does do the right thing and does stand in front of Zoey and Titian and does save them but she still ends up stripped of power and exiled? Guess I should be glad they didn't kill her as was also discussed!!!And on a side note - Delora and co are aware that they are under suspicion and they STILL go ahead with their plans? Why would they not bide their time? HOW did they think they were going to get away with it? And when they realized they were locked in? They STILL try to kill Zoey? What is the point in that? There was literally NO WAY for them to get away with this so why would they not wait? That part did NOT make sense。So because Jaenelle fell under the influence of a bad crowd, even though she didn't actually DO anything, she is stripped of some of her power and that supposedly "pays her debt" except it really didn't because she ends up being ripped out of her home and sent to the home for broken witches so that a bunch of OTHER kids can come and live at the hall! WHAT??? Yes, let's send our daughter away so everyone else's children can come and live with us。 Ok。Well, I guess I've bitched enough。 I'm a Mom of 3。 I would do ANYTHING in the world to protect my children and I can't understand people who would not。 I can't understand people who wouldn't even try。 I can't understand people who would throw away their own children。 To me, that was the theme of this book。 。。。more
