Summary

Oto nowe pogranicze。

Murtry makes it into my top 10 most hated characters ever。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Loved the action and the way the storylines all payoff and collide at the end as always。 Getting to explore the new planet, ecosystems, and learning more about the gatebuilder network was a highlight。 I liked the concept of the POV chapters from The Investigator which encourage the reader to think more deeply about the nature of consciousness and the the gatebuilders。 The moment when Basia made the choice to support Felcia was one of the most moving character moments in the series so far。 This n Loved the action and the way the storylines all payoff and collide at the end as always。 Getting to explore the new planet, ecosystems, and learning more about the gatebuilder network was a highlight。 I liked the concept of the POV chapters from The Investigator which encourage the reader to think more deeply about the nature of consciousness and the the gatebuilders。 The moment when Basia made the choice to support Felcia was one of the most moving character moments in the series so far。 This novel also hinted a lot more at Amos's, Alex's, and Naomi's backstory, so looking forward to that as well。 The ending-action felt a bit rushed and I wish more time was spent adding detail to the last acts。 I also wish we had more from Felcia and Lucia who were intriguing characters that mostly faded for the second half of the book。 The RCE militia felt a bit unbelievable and the characters were a bit forgettable, which made their involvement in the end of the story a bit less impactful to me。 。。。more

More of a return to form but a lot of plot armor/a confusing story

As Bobbie would say - why are we not talking about the aliens? While the writing is still pretty addictive, I kept turning the pages hoping the story would stop focusing on the squabbles between the settlers and the corporate employees。 The villain is extremely petty in his villainousness。 I also found the story around Elvi very annoying, when she is actually very cool (view spoiler)[- it makes no sense that a competent scientist would behave like a giddy hormonal teenager, unable to do her work As Bobbie would say - why are we not talking about the aliens? While the writing is still pretty addictive, I kept turning the pages hoping the story would stop focusing on the squabbles between the settlers and the corporate employees。 The villain is extremely petty in his villainousness。 I also found the story around Elvi very annoying, when she is actually very cool (view spoiler)[- it makes no sense that a competent scientist would behave like a giddy hormonal teenager, unable to do her work in a life and death situation because of her unrequited crush。 And the solution to that。。。 ugh (hide spoiler)]。 Things started getting interesting at the end, so there is still hope for the series, but this was definitely a low point。 Glad to see Havelock back, and it seems we will be seeing more of Avasarola and Bobbie。 。。。more

3 and 1/2 stars。 This book could not have been read as a stand-alone; there is too much backstory to understand what is going on。 That said, I’m enjoying how they flesh out the TV series’ characters。 Elvi’s statement seems to sum up the theme of this book: “The usual state of nature is recovering from the last disaster。”I also got a kick out of this exchange when Elvi was determined to throw herself at Holden:Fayez: “‘Please, we have fucked up everything about coming to this deathtrap of a plane 3 and 1/2 stars。 This book could not have been read as a stand-alone; there is too much backstory to understand what is going on。 That said, I’m enjoying how they flesh out the TV series’ characters。 Elvi’s statement seems to sum up the theme of this book: “The usual state of nature is recovering from the last disaster。”I also got a kick out of this exchange when Elvi was determined to throw herself at Holden:Fayez: “‘Please, we have fucked up everything about coming to this deathtrap of a planet。 We have hauled every tribalist, territorial, monkey-brained mistake humanity ever made through the gate and made soup with them here。 This thing you’re about to do? Books in the Expanse series are essentially fun adventure tales in space, and I enjoyed this one a lot!Apparent dreamboat James Holden and the crew of the Rocinante are tasked with resolving a settlement dispute on an alien planet a years' voyage away from any civilization。 The human conflict was ultimately driven forward by a single evil sheriff-type antagonist, which felt a little simplistic。 But Murtry's bullshit is overshadowed by a struggle for survival against the elements conflict that I Books in the Expanse series are essentially fun adventure tales in space, and I enjoyed this one a lot!Apparent dreamboat James Holden and the crew of the Rocinante are tasked with resolving a settlement dispute on an alien planet a years' voyage away from any civilization。 The human conflict was ultimately driven forward by a single evil sheriff-type antagonist, which felt a little simplistic。 But Murtry's bullshit is overshadowed by a struggle for survival against the elements conflict that I appreciated more。 I thought that depiction of the unglamorous, relentless slog that always unfolds in the wake of a catastrophe was executed really well。 There were also a few fascinating discussions of space telemetry and speculations on potential interactions between human and alien biology。I feel the book succeeds by narrowing its focus onto a few actually compelling people (and Basia), which keeps things moving along and delivers a lot of excellent moments that are integrated well into the story。 It's true that Elvi's crush on Holden was badly drawn, but it was so funny and it was ultimately repudiated by the text so I didn't mind。 Also, it wasn't just Elvi! On multiple occasions, from multiple people, we get a paragraph or two where they ponder how cool and heroic James Holden is and how great his butt looks。 Favorite scenes and elements include:- Elvi studying the algae conjunctivitis- Naomi's excellent plan with the tow line and the rail gun- Holden's whole dynamic with the Miller construct- Havlock trying to persuade the RCE militia to stand down by explaining they have no idea what they're doing。 HE HAD TRAINED THEM。- I don't usually like it when characters tell their entire their backstory to another person, but I did like Alex's a lot。 。。。more

If you loved this season of the show。。。 the book is better imhoWay more descriptive, no attempted love story between Lucia and Alex, The return of an old character from the first book? I think I liked it better than the relevant season of the show, and I freaking loved that season。 A must read for the fans。

Book 4 in a 9 book series has a lot of risk - I read other reviews that said this was a mediocre entry after the three bangers before it。 I think this book did an incredible job of escalating the stakes of the universe while remaining compact and building investments in characters。 If this is the soft spot of the series, as others have said, I cannot wait to tear through the rest。 I loved Cibola Burn。

Cibola Burn is an interesting look at the new age of exploration occasioned by the opening of the ring gates, and the inevitable conflict and massive social shifts it produces。 I appreciated the ongoing detail of the world-building and the fact that the new focus characters all go through significant and interesting arcs。 But I felt like this book had significant pacing issues due to a lot of repetitive exposition, which made it feel like one of those movies you think should be over about three Cibola Burn is an interesting look at the new age of exploration occasioned by the opening of the ring gates, and the inevitable conflict and massive social shifts it produces。 I appreciated the ongoing detail of the world-building and the fact that the new focus characters all go through significant and interesting arcs。 But I felt like this book had significant pacing issues due to a lot of repetitive exposition, which made it feel like one of those movies you think should be over about three times but nevertheless just keeps on going。 One of the examples of this that irritated me the most was the constant reiteration of Elvi's (view spoiler)[feelings for Holden during the first 2/3 of the book。 It's not that I don't think her feelings are plausible, but we could've filled in the blanks for ourselves at some points during her interactions with Holden (hide spoiler)]。 Elvi is a really cool character and I love her passion for science and experiencing their new alien world, but it made me remember all the cringey male-gaze-ness of the first few books and think that the authors are still pretty hit and miss in their writing about women。 。。。more

Better than book 3, but that doesn't say much。 Honestly, I think I'm scrapping the series。 I really should write more of a review。。。 what they did good and what needed improvement。 But honestly, I just don't care。 I think I'll just pirate a copy of the last two and play them while I am sleeping so that I can say I finished the series。 Better than book 3, but that doesn't say much。 Honestly, I think I'm scrapping the series。 I really should write more of a review。。。 what they did good and what needed improvement。 But honestly, I just don't care。 I think I'll just pirate a copy of the last two and play them while I am sleeping so that I can say I finished the series。 。。。more

I think the main take-away I've had from this series is that they seem to build and get more interesting as you go。 I can't put them down, I am mowing through them。 I thought the antagonist was well thought out。 This book was by far the most intriguing to date because they explore the idea of colonization of a new world。 They also put this series in direction where we have to consider the political ramifications of these new worlds。 I think the main take-away I've had from this series is that they seem to build and get more interesting as you go。 I can't put them down, I am mowing through them。 I thought the antagonist was well thought out。 This book was by far the most intriguing to date because they explore the idea of colonization of a new world。 They also put this series in direction where we have to consider the political ramifications of these new worlds。 。。。more

2。5 just barely rounded up。 What a slog。 It had its moments, and got better toward the end, but the POV characters were tremendously unlikeable for the first half to 3/4ths。 Everyone is mean and short-sighted and incompetent。Someone at the end even literally points out that one of the main characters acted unlike themselves。 Hanging a lampshade on it doesn’t actually fix the problem。I hated the fourth season of the show and knew this book was going to be a problem for me, and what do you know, i 2。5 just barely rounded up。 What a slog。 It had its moments, and got better toward the end, but the POV characters were tremendously unlikeable for the first half to 3/4ths。 Everyone is mean and short-sighted and incompetent。Someone at the end even literally points out that one of the main characters acted unlike themselves。 Hanging a lampshade on it doesn’t actually fix the problem。I hated the fourth season of the show and knew this book was going to be a problem for me, and what do you know, it was! 🙃 。。。more

2。5 stars I have really enjoyed the Expanse novels up until this one。 Cibola Burn unfortunately did not have the same gripping excitement I’ve come accustomed to。 I found the first ~60% of the book boring, filled with clunky dialogue and tedious scenes。 The later portion of the book did pick up and was somewhat interesting, but not enough to save this one for me。
