Picked this book up from the Santa Barbara Museum of Art! I was shocked seeing one of his books there, as it's (as of late) been difficult to find books about his works/life at any type of book store or even online。 It was neat to see this at a museum, and definitely had to have it for my collection。The foreword and pictures of his work are wonderful; great quality of pictures too! I will love having this out on a coffee table or bookshelf to look at time and time again。 Picked this book up from the Santa Barbara Museum of Art! If you love Rothko, this is a comprehensive overview。 Not so much about his life but more about technique, theory and approach。

This is a very brief exploration of Rothko's Color Field Paintings, some of my most beloved artworks that I enjoy viewing。 The book consists of two essays, one by Rothko's son, Christopher Rothko, and another by art critic Janet Bishop。 Considering the book is so short, a considerable portion of it consists of images of what I believe are all of the Color Field paintings, which are beautiful to behold even in an ebook format。 I found both essays to be imaginatively insightful and well-written, e This is a very brief exploration of Rothko's Color Field Paintings, some of my most beloved artworks that I enjoy viewing。 The book consists of two essays, one by Rothko's son, Christopher Rothko, and another by art critic Janet Bishop。 Considering the book is so short, a considerable portion of it consists of images of what I believe are all of the Color Field paintings, which are beautiful to behold even in an ebook format。 I found both essays to be imaginatively insightful and well-written, especially Christopher Rothko's。 Christopher seems to have an almost spiritual insight into the profundity of the paintings and their undeniable popularity。 Indeed, Christopher's writing impressed me so much that I'm very intrigued to read his book-length exploration of Rothko's career: "Mark Rothko。" 。。。more

I picked up this book hoping to delve deeper into Rothko’s later paintings。 One of my favorites is “#20 (DEEP RED AND BLACK) (BROWN, BLACK ON MAROON)” https://www。wikiart。org/en/mark-rothk。。。Rectangles, colors, fuzzy edges, are what Rothko uses to get us, his audience, to probe our emotions。 I don’t know if I would go as far as his son, Christopher, does in his sparse introduction, but I can understand when he states that these simple combinations of form and color ‘touch us because they know ex I picked up this book hoping to delve deeper into Rothko’s later paintings。 One of my favorites is “#20 (DEEP RED AND BLACK) (BROWN, BLACK ON MAROON)” https://www。wikiart。org/en/mark-rothk。。。Rectangles, colors, fuzzy edges, are what Rothko uses to get us, his audience, to probe our emotions。 I don’t know if I would go as far as his son, Christopher, does in his sparse introduction, but I can understand when he states that these simple combinations of form and color ‘touch us because they know exactly “where we live。” They speak to us, imparting a message akin to “this is what it feels like to feel this way。” They are essentially the painted expression of what it is to be human and alive, filled with joy and sorrow, aspiration and despair, fears and hopes, and fears about our hopes。"’And I appreciate Janet Bishop’s observation that this shape/”un-shape” that Rothko presents us is akin to “what we see every time we open our eyes, so omnipresent that we are rarely aware that it is there。”I am still working through why #20 works for me better than Four Darks in Red https://www。mark-rothko。org/four-dark。。。So, I will be coming back to these images or seeking them out in various museums to test what they evoke。 。。。more

I really like Rothko and although no book will do his paintings justice, this one was a nice overview that was not overwhelming with info while providing nice context

While not containing my favorite works of his, this is still an excellent crash course-esq (possible) introduction to Rothko's emotional and expressive style and haunting use of colors。 While not containing my favorite works of his, this is still an excellent crash course-esq (possible) introduction to Rothko's emotional and expressive style and haunting use of colors。 。。。more
