The best Sci-fi series of this time。 Phenomenal character development and depth, excellent pacing, the best kind of hard sci-fi with touches of alien/future fun。 So good。

I liked it much more than the previous one。 There are only 4 POVs: Holden's, Amos's, Naomi's, and Alex's。 And they are the characters we've been rooting for since the beginning。The style is still very "tell-y" and "distant" from the characters' heads, and this is why I can't possibly rate this 5 stars。 Things like "X didn't realize he was dead" make me want to throw the book out of an airlock but hey, at least I am able to FEEL what being inside an airlock means, so kudos for the worldbuilding。 I liked it much more than the previous one。 There are only 4 POVs: Holden's, Amos's, Naomi's, and Alex's。 And they are the characters we've been rooting for since the beginning。The style is still very "tell-y" and "distant" from the characters' heads, and this is why I can't possibly rate this 5 stars。 Things like "X didn't realize he was dead" make me want to throw the book out of an airlock but hey, at least I am able to FEEL what being inside an airlock means, so kudos for the worldbuilding。 。。。more

I made the mistake of reading this book right after getting caught up on S5 of the show。 While I'm impressed they managed such a faithful adaptation of Nemesis Games, the downside is that it took me a long time to get through the book since it was all too familiar! It was really helpful to have read The Churn before reading this installment。 It is also great to be reading books 4-6 one after the other, which I could not do with the first three as they were not all available at the same time from my library。 SPOILER ALERT!!***Somehow, the fact that Inaros killed the Earth was not as clear to me in the TV show as it was in the novel。 Also, I think Naomi sharing her criminal past with Jim had a twofold function:1。 Trust Jim enough to share everything, and let It was really helpful to have read The Churn before reading this installment。 It is also great to be reading books 4-6 one after the other, which I could not do with the first three as they were not all available at the same time from my library。 SPOILER ALERT!!***Somehow, the fact that Inaros killed the Earth was not as clear to me in the TV show as it was in the novel。 Also, I think Naomi sharing her criminal past with Jim had a twofold function:1。 Trust Jim enough to share everything, and let go of her guilt;2。 Use her past to explain why they could now trust Clarissa if her presence is so important to Amos。 。。。more

My usual gripe with the dynamic duo of authors that created this wonderful Expanse universe was on full display here。 Great writing, characters, overall plot, etc。 etc。 These reasons are why I keep reading although they have occasionally fallen short。 But my God they need to have some sort of effective military advisor to give them insight into how militaries function and how tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs) work for war gaming military scenarios。 I've seen time and again in this series My usual gripe with the dynamic duo of authors that created this wonderful Expanse universe was on full display here。 Great writing, characters, overall plot, etc。 etc。 These reasons are why I keep reading although they have occasionally fallen short。 But my God they need to have some sort of effective military advisor to give them insight into how militaries function and how tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs) work for war gaming military scenarios。 I've seen time and again in this series a tactical action that just seems so easy to stop if anyone was using half their brain。 While these books often denigrate some of the militaries/governments that are involved in these actions (often justified in RL and I was in the US Army), the level of stupidity is just ridiculous and takes anyone who knows anything about tactics out of the books。 I'm sorry。。。trying to avoid spoilers here。 But the main event in this book just seemed so implausible。 These books take place way in the future and the fact that the military didn't foresee this or have a way to overcome it just is stupid beyond belief。 That said, if you are able to disengage your brain on this major event, this is a great book and a good continuation of the saga of Holden's crew。 The ending was pretty cool too and sets up a good hook for the next in the series。 。。。more

Of all the expanse book I've read so far, this is by far the worst。 That is not to say it's not a recommended read but most of the book feels like a filler。 Amos going to earth and being stuck there。 That story arc was utterly pointless。 Niomis story arc was also completely pointless as she gets kidnapped。 Both of these story arcs feels more like fillers than anything else and we didn't need so much time knowing about it。 The only thing that was interesting was Holden and Fred's story。 Of all the expanse book I've read so far, this is by far the worst。 That is not to say it's not a recommended read but most of the book feels like a filler。 Amos going to earth and being stuck there。 That story arc was utterly pointless。 Niomis story arc was also completely pointless as she gets kidnapped。 Both of these story arcs feels more like fillers than anything else and we didn't need so much time knowing about it。 The only thing that was interesting was Holden and Fred's story。 。。。more

I think is my fav installment of the series。It is the first time that we get POVs of the 4 main characters, and we travel with them in their journey。 I am amazed at how much I can relate to Naomi, and I am far more amazed because the authors are men, and it is rare to find a good fletch out woman, who is not whiny or poorly written。 At the same time, I felt detached from Amos and -by far- Alex, who he served as plot lever。Avasarala is always my fav character even if I get a whole chapter with he I think is my fav installment of the series。It is the first time that we get POVs of the 4 main characters, and we travel with them in their journey。 I am amazed at how much I can relate to Naomi, and I am far more amazed because the authors are men, and it is rare to find a good fletch out woman, who is not whiny or poorly written。 At the same time, I felt detached from Amos and -by far- Alex, who he served as plot lever。Avasarala is always my fav character even if I get a whole chapter with her or a few lines。Really love this book, and I enjoy the whole series so far。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 4。5/5 starsI love love loved that this book was from the point of view of the Roci crew。 I wish every book in the series was but I guess I understand why this one was and not the rest。 Since they were scattered across the solar system and not together, we could still get points of view from all the action angles; while usually they are together and that wouldn’t be possible。Of course Amos’s parts were my favorite because he is the best。 The Naomi parts bugged me because she annoys me, and that’s 4。5/5 starsI love love loved that this book was from the point of view of the Roci crew。 I wish every book in the series was but I guess I understand why this one was and not the rest。 Since they were scattered across the solar system and not together, we could still get points of view from all the action angles; while usually they are together and that wouldn’t be possible。Of course Amos’s parts were my favorite because he is the best。 The Naomi parts bugged me because she annoys me, and that’s why this isn’t a full 5 stars for me。 However, by the end, I even enjoyed her part。 Holden didn’t annoy me too bad this book, which is saying something。 And his adventures with Fred and Monica were pretty great。Alex’s adventures with Bobby were even better。And Avasarala was her typical take-no-shit hilarious self。 Overall, great installment to the series but not my favorite。 。。。more

I wasn't expecting much after watching season 5 of the Expanse, but this book exceeded my expectations greatly。 The story was funny, emotional, and there was more of a "gotta read one more chapter" feel to this one。 Ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, so looking forward to the next one。 I wasn't expecting much after watching season 5 of the Expanse, but this book exceeded my expectations greatly。 The story was funny, emotional, and there was more of a "gotta read one more chapter" feel to this one。 Ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, so looking forward to the next one。 。。。more

Nemesis Games, book 5 of the Expanse series was an interesting ride。 Filled with character driven narrative that shows us a glimpse into the backstories of some of the Rocinante's crew makes this a real wonder for the fans of the series。 Getting to know Amos, Alex and Naomi more is like turning them into family more than any other adventure they've had so far and this comes out really well。 Meanwhile all the political maneuvering continues, but not - as we would expect - focused on the thousand Nemesis Games, book 5 of the Expanse series was an interesting ride。 Filled with character driven narrative that shows us a glimpse into the backstories of some of the Rocinante's crew makes this a real wonder for the fans of the series。 Getting to know Amos, Alex and Naomi more is like turning them into family more than any other adventure they've had so far and this comes out really well。 Meanwhile all the political maneuvering continues, but not - as we would expect - focused on the thousand new worlds open for humanity's settlement, but the old wounds looked at again from a new perspective。 The Belters and the "appearance" of the Free Navy with such colossal action that would reverberate its effects on all humanity for as long as we're around。 It's a shameful act - genocide even on an unprecedented scale -, but it's an important reminder to today's people as well that we're already in the possession of such deadly technology that can render a planet totally dead。 And sooner or later there would be people who are willing to overstep the ethical barriers that kept back other so far in history。 This is again, a very tough message that every human living today should start thinking about and not file it away as a science-fiction notion。 This book is devastating, in all sense, but still shows that there's always another frontier and more sinister things that will come。 I believe the most important is that before we start being afraid of aliens, we should have a profound fear of ourselves, and it's just a criminal oversight that we do not feel like this towards our own species。。。 But also, if we were, and this was part of our everyday lives, noone would live a normal life on Earth today。 This is such a dual and tragic concept but again, this is to stimulate thoughts and maybe conversations among us today and not later in the future。 Thumbs up for this timely and profound message to everyone! 。。。more

Oh, and along the way we met up with Bobby Draper, and Chrisjen Avasarala returns and her dialogue in this one is totally classic! Nemesis Games is the fifth entry in the Expanse series。 As always, it’s quite the ride, and this book, to me, really upped the ante quite a bit。 The rush to colonize 1,000 new world continues, a great mass of people going through the Ring, depopulating both the inner planets and the outer planets。 Why scrabble for survival where all that separates you from the deadly void of space is a thin metal hull in constant need of maintenance or continue terraforming Mars when there are worlds out there w Nemesis Games is the fifth entry in the Expanse series。 As always, it’s quite the ride, and this book, to me, really upped the ante quite a bit。 The rush to colonize 1,000 new world continues, a great mass of people going through the Ring, depopulating both the inner planets and the outer planets。 Why scrabble for survival where all that separates you from the deadly void of space is a thin metal hull in constant need of maintenance or continue terraforming Mars when there are worlds out there with habitable biospheres already? More room to grow?In the rush of people from Mars, a military already depleted from previous conflicts with Earth and OPA radicals, is being drained also of its hardware, from ships to stealth hull coating。 Nemesis Games starts with a militant band of OPA Belters taking advantage of the chaos to attack and loot a Martian Navy outpost on Callisto。 (Remember the stealth coating—it’s very important later。) Afterwards, no one realizes what exactly is missing。 That’s a huge red flag。 A few years pass after the outpost attack and we catch up with Holden, Alex, Amos, and Naomi on Tycho Station。 The Rocinante has taken quite a beating in its service life and is slated for a six-month repair。 In the meantime, the crew splits up—Amos to Earth to pay his respects to a dead loved one, Alex to Mars to patch things up with his ex-wife, and Naomi to Ceres Station (for her part, she doesn’t say much about why there and what’s she’s doing, but Holden trusts her)。 Out of all the characters, I was mostly curious about the past that Naomi doesn’t speak of but which she steps back into to help her estranged son, Filip, out of trouble。 (view spoiler)[Naomi didn’t know until later that Fillip and his OPA band had attacked and looted that Martian Navy base in the prologue。 (hide spoiler)] Naomi has hinted at her past before, alluding to “being a monster。” Now, the reader gets to see what exactly is going on with Naomi。 Meanwhile, Holden stays on Tycho Station and runs into his journalist buddy, Monica Stuart。 Monica has been digging into the missing ships issue—and not everyone’s happy about that。 Apart from Amos, the Rocinante crew individually find themselves in over their heads over their discoveries about missing Martian ships and military materiel。 (view spoiler)[Oh, not to mention, some colony ships going through the Ring have mysteriously disappeared。 They went in but did not come out the other end。 Are they connected with the Callisto incident? Speculation abounds! (hide spoiler)] Alex runs into Bobbie, our favorite former kick-butt Martian marine, who is looking into this issue for Chrisjen Avasarala。 Then we got Monica and Holden of course on Tycho。 At the heart of everything the Rocinante crew is investigating is Naomi herself, who’s been taken prisoner by her emotionally abusive ex, Marco, also father of Filip and the leader of the militant wing of the OPA。 Marco is grooming Filip to take over when he’s gone。 (Yes, that Filip。)All the puzzle pieces come together suddenly when Earth is attacked—someone flung asteroids deliberately at the planet without them being seen until it was much too late。 At the Ring, Medina Station, humanity’s last waystation before exiting the solar system, is also attacked and the Ring gates shut。 “Billions were dying right now, and no way to save them。 Earth was broken。 Mars was a ghost-town, the terraforming project at its heart falling to pieces。 The aliens that sent the protomolecule hadn’t needed to destroy humanity。” Poor Amos was caught on Earth when the apocalypse happened and must find a way to get off-planet。 Alex and Bobbie have the Martian prime minister—a surprisingly chill and down-to-earth guy—on board and are racing to Luna with terrorists on their tails。 (Luna being the defacto seat of the UN in the aftermath of the asteroid attacks。 Well, the remainder of the government。) And poor Avasarala is trying to do damage control as the solar-system-wide order collapses under the chaos of the terrorist attacks, which are being attributed to the militant wing of the OPA。 (view spoiler)[I mean, they practically claimed responsibility in a speech where Marco crowed about OPA victory and making the Belt better again by forcefully diverting resources otherwise going through the Ring and out of the solar system with the colony ships。 (hide spoiler)]You know it’s bad when Avasarala has a breakdown over all of it。 She really cannot do it all alone this time。 Hearing her asking for help was truly emotional and moving for all involved, but it was also so shocking because it was so out of character for our normally confident, swaggering potty-mouthed leader。 Also converging on Luna is Holden, racing the Rocinante to Luna, escorting OPA leader Fred Johnson (the leader of the not-so-crazy wing of the OPA, as Avasarala says at one point, but with language I won’t say in this review) to the meeting of the remaining established powers。And Naomi is fighting her way out of captivity—desperate to reunite with her crew—seeing that Marco and Filip are beyond her saving now, having killed billions of people。 (view spoiler)[I don’t know how she did it, survived all that psychological trauma, seeing her only son become a killer at the hands of her terrible ex。 Ultimately, trying and failing to set Filip on a better course。 I think she’s stronger than she gives herself credit for。 (hide spoiler)]Gotta say, this series has really resonated with me since I started reading it during this pandemic。 I guess I really needed it during a time when similar societal upheaval is happening in the real world。 It ended up being oddly comforting。 Although Nemesis Games really tested the outer limits of what the Rocinante crew could reasonably overcome and survive。 That quibble aside, Nemesis Games was still a fun read, setting up a bigger stage upon which the perennial conflicts of humanity are borne out。I can't wait to read the next book!-CoraFind this book and other titles within our catalog。["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]> 。。。more
