Summary

This sweeping novel from the New York Times bestselling author of A Long Petal of the Sea tells the epic story of Violeta del Valle, a woman whose life spans one hundred years and bears witness to the greatest upheavals of the twentieth century。

Violeta comes into the world on a stormy day in 1920, the first girl in a family of five boisterous sons。 From the start, her life will be marked by extraordinary events, for the ripples of the Great War are still being felt, even as the Spanish flu arrives on the shores of her South American homeland almost at the moment of her birth。

Through her father's prescience, the family will come through that crisis unscathed, only to face a new one as the Great Depression transforms the genteel city life she has known。 Her family loses all and is forced to retreat to a wild and beautiful but remote part of the country。 There, she will come of age, and her first suitor will come calling。 。 。 。

She tells her story in the form of a letter to someone she loves above all others, recounting devastating heartbreak and passionate affairs, times of both poverty and wealth, terrible loss and immense joy。 Her life will be shaped by some of the most important events of history: the fight for women's rights, the rise and fall of tyrants, and, ultimately, not one but two pandemics。

Told through the eyes of a woman whose unforgettable passion, determination, and sense of humor will carry her through a lifetime of upheaval, Isabel Allende once more brings us an epic that is both fiercely inspiring and deeply emotional。

I’m pretty sure this is the first Isabel Allende I’ve read, and perhaps it would have been better to start elsewhere? I just found this lacklustre, which took some doing, really, as it’s the tumultuous life story of Violeta, a convention-busting 100-year-old Chilean woman on her deathbed, as told to Camillo。 (We don’t find out who he is to Violeta until well into the book。) Violeta’s event-filled life is bracketed on one end by the 1920 Spanish flu epidemic (it took an extra few years to impact I’m pretty sure this is the first Isabel Allende I’ve read, and perhaps it would have been better to start elsewhere? Anyway, otherwise a mildly entertaining overview of Chilean life over the past 100 years。 。。。more

This book didn’t quite measure up for me。 I usually love this author, but this book felt a little flat。 Allende is a beautiful storyteller, but this book felt lacking in feeling for me。 I did not connect with and characters in this book。 The narrator seemed detached from the major events that should be emotional and have feeling。 I enjoyed the book but wanted more。

Stunning writing and a compelling recounting of a tumultuous century。 I wish I had felt closer to some of the characters; since Allende is capturing such a wide expanse of time, it is hard to get to know anyone in great depth。

When I read "The House of the Spirits," Isabel Allende became my favorite author。 I think I've read practically every book she's written that's been translated into English。 In "Violeta" and in "A Long Petal to the Sea", Isabel Allende has returned to her Chilean roots。 Because she is writing about the place that is probably closest to her heart, these two books are in my opinion, the best ones she's written in a long time。"Violeta" is purportedly a story based on Isabel Allende's mother's life。 When I read "The House of the Spirits," Isabel Allende became my favorite author。 I think I've read practically every book she's written that's been translated into English。 In "Violeta" and in "A Long Petal to the Sea", Isabel Allende has returned to her Chilean roots。 Because she is writing about the place that is probably closest to her heart, these two books are in my opinion, the best ones she's written in a long time。"Violeta" is purportedly a story based on Isabel Allende's mother's life。 I don't know whether or not it is but the history of Chile from 1920 to 2020 is the historic backdrop for the book。 The story begins when Violeta is born during the Spanish Flu epidemic which didn't reach Chile until that year and ends with Violeta's imminent death in 2020。 She writes the book in the form of a letter to Camilo。 Until the end of the book we don't know who Camilo is but it works as a vehicle to tell Violeta's tumultuous life story。 For anyone who has enjoyed Isabel Allende's books, I strongly recommend this one。 。。。more

I’m going to DNF this book at 25%。 The narrator tells the story in a way in which we are not really experiencing the events。 I’m finding it hard to feel for the characters or care what happens in the story。 I enjoyed her last book much better。
