Summary

A woman receives an unexpected visitor during a deadly snowstorm in this chilling thriller from New York Times bestselling author Heather Gudenkauf

She thought she was alone

True crime writer Wylie Lark doesn’t mind being snowed in at the isolated farmhouse where she’s retreated to write her new book。 A cozy fire, complete silence。 It would be perfect, if not for the fact that decades earlier, at this very house, two people were murdered in cold blood and a girl disappeared without a trace。

As the storm worsens, Wylie finds herself trapped inside the house, haunted by the secrets contained within its walls—haunted by secrets of her own。 Then she discovers a small child in the snow just outside。 After bringing the child inside for warmth and safety, she begins to search for answers。 But soon it becomes clear that the farmhouse isn’t as isolated as she thought, and someone is willing to do anything to find them。

There wasn't anything special about this book。 It was just okay。 I really wanted more out of it。 There wasn't anything special about this book。 It was just okay。 I really wanted more out of it。 。。。more

Like Heather’s other books, this one is told from different perspectives and different time periods。 It kept me interested and turning the pages。

Good multilayer mystery! The Overnight Guest is a dual timeline story; a blistering cold night in the present-day and hot summer of 2000。 Wylie Lark is a true-crime author from Oregon。 She rented an old remote farmhouse in Burden, Iowa for some peace and quiet to finish her latest book。 With snow and sleet, the lights begin to flicker, Whylie let an old stray dog out to do its business。 Tas's taking too long。。。 so Whylie goes out to find the dog。 She sees a little boy lying on the ground in the Good multilayer mystery! Anyway, good times! It's fun to see how it all played out。 I wish the book ended at 90% because I find a teeny tiny part leaning towards a B-rated horror movie。 。。。more

The Overnight Guest by Heather Gudenkauf is a work of suspense about a true crime novelist that weaves three timelines together and in so doing reveals the identity of a murderer。 Multiple narratives create an interesting beginning and immediately give the reader a reason to turn the page。 Gudenkauf does a skillful job of maintaining divergent timelines throughout the first two acts。 For the sheer talent required to pull off three narratives at once, I was tempted to give the book at least four The Overnight Guest by Heather Gudenkauf is a work of suspense about a true crime novelist that weaves three timelines together and in so doing reveals the identity of a murderer。 Multiple narratives create an interesting beginning and immediately give the reader a reason to turn the page。 Gudenkauf does a skillful job of maintaining divergent timelines throughout the first two acts。 For the sheer talent required to pull off three narratives at once, I was tempted to give the book at least four stars。 I enjoyed the specific details Gudenkauf provided in describing setting, both the farmland of Josie’s childhood and the profound cold Wylie experienced during the blizzard。 However, I had significant issues with the portrayal of trauma responses。 The traumatized characters’ recalls were too pristine, too unscrambled to be believable, as was the delay in providing treatment at a hospital for a minor with a gunshot wound。 In addition, I was distracted by several grammatical errors and unclear pronoun references, something I don’t expect in a traditionally published book。 As the timelines dovetailed into one, the story became predictable so that I enjoyed the beginning and middle more than the end。 The full identity of the overnight guest was pleasantly shocking, but the revelation of the killer’s identity seemed anticlimactic in comparison。 Despite the story’s shortcomings, Gudenkauf provided twists and turns satisfying enough for me to recommend the book to suspense and murder mystery fans。 。。。more

Fan。 Tastic。 Book。 The story had me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out how it all was going to come together。 This is my first book by Heather Gudenkauf, but it will definitely not be my last。

I never ever was so angry at wasting my time with a book as I was with this one。At three quarters the plot is lifted and the book finished in the most excruciating hysterical writing one can imagine。Gudenkauf translates as cheap from German and it very much describes exactly how this book reads。It's cheap。 Full of every stupid cliché one can think of and really not fit for the European (read: people with brains, common sense and a healthy cynicism) market。Do yourself a favour and do NOT READ THI I never ever was so angry at wasting my time with a book as I was with this one。At three quarters the plot is lifted and the book finished in the most excruciating hysterical writing one can imagine。Gudenkauf translates as cheap from German and it very much describes exactly how this book reads。It's cheap。 Full of every stupid cliché one can think of and really not fit for the European (read: people with brains, common sense and a healthy cynicism) market。Do yourself a favour and do NOT READ THIS BOOK!!!!!! 。。。more

4。5 stars! I read this story on a plane。 The three POVS were very interesting and led me on a mystery where I was trying to put all the pieces together。 The characters were well developed and the plot was intense and intriguing。 This is the story of Wylie and an overnight guest that shows up to her house。 Who is the child and how do the other two POVs connect to the story line?

Loved it!! Best book of Heather Gudenkauf’s!!

This book was a real roller coaster ride。 I loved the way it all came together。 A terrible tragedy happened to Josie when she was 12 years old。 This murder goes unsolved and if you think you have it figured out- you’re probably wrong。 Great read!

Expect the UnexpectedThe book tells three different stories, which at first are baffling, but come together in a most unexpected way。 Best friends, siblings, parents, families in small town America exposed to tragedy that no one saw coming。 You feel every bit of pain and emotion, as the story unfolds, and you cannot stop reading, until the bitter end。

Solid 3。5! Fast-paced mystery/thriller that keep me guessing。

This book had all the perfect elements of a great wintery thriller! There were great descriptions of the cold wind blowing, bond chilling snow and body aches。 Readers who enjoyed Shiver, Rock Paper Scissors or No Exit will find this equally entertaining。The plot was exceptional with seamless transitions between the past in 2000 when the Doyle farm was attacked vs the present with Wylie Lark stranded alone in a snow-zilla blizzard in the present。 All of the characters in the book were equally end This book had all the perfect elements of a great wintery thriller! Creepy references to running in corn and being hunted heightening my angst。 Knowing that the very same individual could show up at Wylie's frozen front door further brought the chills。 。。。more

Very good psychological thriller。 There were 3 timelines which all came together at the end。 The twist at the end was good, but I felt the ending was rushed and there were a few plot points which were left open。 Overall a very good read。

3。5It was pretty good, kept me entertained but nothing earth shattering。 Ok characters, one twist got me a bit。

Definitely a good suspenseful page turner with a few twists to keep you guessing。Fell apart for me a little at the end so I gave it four instead of five stars。

7% - This was a mistake。 😕 I'm done for the night。 I need happiness。 9% - I'm just not feeling this。 I'm going to have to move on before it gets any darker。  7% - This was a mistake。 😕 I'm done for the night。 I need happiness。 9% - I'm just not feeling this。 I'm going to have to move on before it gets any darker。  。。。more

What would you do if you were stranded by a snow storm…with injured people and a killer still at large?? This book hit me in all the feels……and the last line of Chapter 50 brought me to tears!!!!!

Easy to read thriller

Three narratives come together in this well written psychological thriller。 Two timelines, one set in August 2000 when terrible events happen to the Doyle family and the second set in the present day when Wylie Lark, a true crime writer finds herself snowed in at an isolated farmhouse。 I couldn’t put this book down once I started reading!Highly recommended!

The Overnight Guests was a fun but predictable read。 I enjoyed the separate timelines and the atmosphere。 I just found the twists to be pretty easy to guess。
