An interesting novella, the story of Lorna dee was not bad… but the republic who tries to rehabilitate her are incredibly weak and not totally sure what what was driving them

The plot is just the girlbossification of Lourna Dee who starts out a girlboss, has some backstory, learns nothing and ends up a girlboss。 and i ate it up。 completely。

Pretty much all three of the modern era Star Wars audio dramas have gotten 4 stars from me。 This provided some really good backstory for Lourna Dee。 It was refreshing to not focus primarily on a Jedi character in this era。 Though it was fun hearing Oppo Rancisis。 However, I was kind of disappointed that Avar Kriss did not sound like Jodie Whittaker。 A nitpick, I know。

A decent High Republic story, lots of background lore for the Nihil, Lorna, and even for the Twi'lek civilization。 Narrative gets tiresome time to time due to a permanently angry and yelling Lorna, but I was able to tolerate, just love the High Republic era, with all its issues and inconsistencies。 A decent High Republic story, lots of background lore for the Nihil, Lorna, and even for the Twi'lek civilization。 Narrative gets tiresome time to time due to a permanently angry and yelling Lorna, but I was able to tolerate, just love the High Republic era, with all its issues and inconsistencies。 。。。more

This was a good audio drama set in the world of the High Republic。 The cast did a great job of bringing the characters to life。 It was interesting to see the great Lourna Dee be placed into a situation where she was a captive, and I enjoyed learning more about her past and what makes her tick。 She had a very hard life, and her motivations were more complex than I initially thought based on her actions in previous books。 As always, she was devious, dangerous, and incredibly strong-willed, but the This was a good audio drama set in the world of the High Republic。 The cast did a great job of bringing the characters to life。 It was interesting to see the great Lourna Dee be placed into a situation where she was a captive, and I enjoyed learning more about her past and what makes her tick。 She had a very hard life, and her motivations were more complex than I initially thought based on her actions in previous books。 As always, she was devious, dangerous, and incredibly strong-willed, but there were also glimpses of a lighter side of her that seemed to long for connection with others。 The glimpses into the history of the Nihil were interesting, and I enjoyed getting a little more insight into the other tempest runners, as well。 If you have enjoyed the other media related to the High Republic, you will likely enjoy this story too, and at just a little over six hours, it was an easy listen that didn't take up a ton of time。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I'd give this book a 3。5 overall。 The voice acting was very good and the story as a whole worked pretty well。 I just feel like it was a pointless delivery device for Lourna's back story, granted that might have been the point, if so I think it might have worked better to just tell that story in more detail。 In the end I think this could be skipped if you just care about the over arcing story of the high republic。 It's nice world building but not essential and will probably be summarizes in a few I'd give this book a 3。5 overall。 The voice acting was very good and the story as a whole worked pretty well。 I just feel like it was a pointless delivery device for Lourna's back story, granted that might have been the point, if so I think it might have worked better to just tell that story in more detail。 In the end I think this could be skipped if you just care about the over arcing story of the high republic。 It's nice world building but not essential and will probably be summarizes in a few lines in the main line books if necessary。 *******SPOILERS********Lourna seems to be going through a character ark and changing with the help of John but in the end she does not change at all and just ends up killing John (supposedly)。 It just seemed like the character development was thrown away and I felt wrong about the ending。 I guess it was some cool world building for the high republic but not much of consequence seemed to happen。 Pan ita could have been left dead from what happened in the Rising Storm and it would have not changed much。 。。。more

4。5/5Outstanding performances by the actors and now I definitely want to listen to the other Star Wars audio dramas。I loved learning more about Lourna Dee and I am still amazed at how much this made me root for her as a protagonist after getting used to her as an antagonist in the other High Republic stories。 In that aspect it reminded me a lot of Phasma which is another Star Wars story I enjoyed。 She's a complex character and now I want to reread some of the most recent comics that she is in no 4。5/5Outstanding performances by the actors and now I definitely want to listen to the other Star Wars audio dramas。I loved learning more about Lourna Dee and I am still amazed at how much this made me root for her as a protagonist after getting used to her as an antagonist in the other High Republic stories。 In that aspect it reminded me a lot of Phasma which is another Star Wars story I enjoyed。 She's a complex character and now I want to reread some of the most recent comics that she is in now that I have this story in my mind as context。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Thoroughly enjoyed a closer look into Lourna Dee however the pacing was fairly choppy and I struggled at times to keep straight what was past and what was present。 The second third of the book did great work for the character and only further highlighted the lackluster, abrupt ending。 It wasn’t so jarring to say that I don’t understand how they arrived at that conclusion, but it did leave me wishing Cavan Scott would have shown his work。 Overall, I am happy this exists as background for the most Thoroughly enjoyed a closer look into Lourna Dee however the pacing was fairly choppy and I struggled at times to keep straight what was past and what was present。 The second third of the book did great work for the character and only further highlighted the lackluster, abrupt ending。 It wasn’t so jarring to say that I don’t understand how they arrived at that conclusion, but it did leave me wishing Cavan Scott would have shown his work。 Overall, I am happy this exists as background for the most interesting of the Tempest Runners but wish there was more meat on the bone。 Who knows, perhaps the print version will be like a director’s cut of sorts and provide us with more。 。。。more

Peaked in the middle sections when it really delved into Lourna Dee's history and character building, but was very slow to begin, and very rushed at the end。 A fun midpoint of the High Republic story, but not an entirely imperative addition。 Peaked in the middle sections when it really delved into Lourna Dee's history and character building, but was very slow to begin, and very rushed at the end。 A fun midpoint of the High Republic story, but not an entirely imperative addition。 。。。more

I know I'm a sucker for audiobooks read by a full cast, radio drama style, but this was legitimately good。 I believe it requires some foreknowledge about the High Republic to fully enjoy。 It's interesting, though, that in a fictional universe where there are magical, lawfully-good monks who carry swords made of light, the most interesting stories in that universe to me are the ones that only vaguely reference those monks or only focus on one or two。 I know I'm a sucker for audiobooks read by a full cast, radio drama style, but this was legitimately good。 I believe it requires some foreknowledge about the High Republic to fully enjoy。 It's interesting, though, that in a fictional universe where there are magical, lawfully-good monks who carry swords made of light, the most interesting stories in that universe to me are the ones that only vaguely reference those monks or only focus on one or two。 。。。more

Star Wars audiobooks performed by a full-cast with sound effects and musically scored have been a pleasure to listen to for over 25 years! Audio Drama (4/10):I’ve gotta be honest, I was really looking forward to this entry in the Star Wars saga, but I’m highly disappointed。 The attempt to make Lourna Dee a likable character didn’t work at all for me, it just makes me want her taken down even more。 I AM curious to see where she goes, but this entry isn’t necessary for the overall story of The High Republic。

It’s a meme at this point that Cavan Scott can’t write a story without jumping between multiple points in time, but this story takes it to a whole new level。 First, we have the present time, which picks up sometime after the events of his book, The Rising Storm。 Then we jump to the earliest point in the story, where our main character’s backstory is fleshed out。 Then, we have ANOTHER point in time that takes place sometime between the two。 This wouldn’t be a problem for me but the way it’s laid It’s a meme at this point that Cavan Scott can’t write a story without jumping between multiple points in time, but this story takes it to a whole new level。 First, we have the present time, which picks up sometime after the events of his book, The Rising Storm。 Then we jump to the earliest point in the story, where our main character’s backstory is fleshed out。 Then, we have ANOTHER point in time that takes place sometime between the two。 This wouldn’t be a problem for me but the way it’s laid out can be a little confusing since this an audio drama and not a proper novel。 Sometimes it’s hard to discern which period you’re in when the story seemingly jumps between them at random every other minute。 However, the overall story is pretty entertaining and the production value is out of this world。 It’s a must for those keeping up with the series—though, unfortunately, this isn’t because of it’s quality; it just contains key plot points that were started all the way back in the very first book, Light of the Jedi。 。。。more

Petty Fun Audio Drama, Centered on Villain Lourna DeeFull cast, with sound effects and music at times。 Like radio dramas it at times gets excessive with the exposition to explain what is happening。 Also, without access to internal thoughts or visual acting, the characters can seem less realized, seemingly making decisions on a whim。 You'll have to infer their thoughts and emotions。 A good entry detailing the background and current actions of one of the villains of the Star Wars High Republic era Petty Fun Audio Drama, Centered on Villain Lourna DeeFull cast, with sound effects and music at times。 Like radio dramas it at times gets excessive with the exposition to explain what is happening。 Also, without access to internal thoughts or visual acting, the characters can seem less realized, seemingly making decisions on a whim。 You'll have to infer their thoughts and emotions。 A good entry detailing the background and current actions of one of the villains of the Star Wars High Republic era。 。。。more

This is an audio drama that is part of The High Republic series。 In this one, the Republic captures Lourna Dee without realizing who she actually is。 We get to see her time in prison and thru many flashbacks we get to see her journey into becoming a valued member of the Nihil。This is the third audio drama produced by Disney for this universe and for me the least enjoyable。 There are several reasons that I did not like it compared to the other two audio dramas。 I will be honest in saying that I h This is an audio drama that is part of The High Republic series。 In this one, the Republic captures Lourna Dee without realizing who she actually is。 We get to see her time in prison and thru many flashbacks we get to see her journey into becoming a valued member of the Nihil。This is the third audio drama produced by Disney for this universe and for me the least enjoyable。 There are several reasons that I did not like it compared to the other two audio dramas。 I will be honest in saying that I haven't been the biggest fan of the overall series and maybe some of that carried over to this book。 I will say once again the production is amazing。 We have various actors along with music and sound effects。 With the top quality production I didn't even mind listening to it even though it wasn't my favorite story。 The first reason I did not like it was the actress who portrayed the main character。 I thought her performance was a little over the top。 Maybe it was how the story was written。 At times I could visualize the main character twirling a fake moustache as to say "Here I am。 I am the villain of this piece。" My second problem was the switching back and forth between the flashbacks and the present。 Without any reference that a scene switched and both settings being similar I did get lost at times to where we were currently。 I did enjoy the finale with all the action and Lourna Dee's conclusion to this small arc。This audio drama did provide some enjoyment but not enough for me to say I liked it。 There were things that I did find interesting like Lourna's background。 Maybe I was expecting more because of the other two audio dramas。 Even though I am not the biggest supporter of this particular story I love these audio dramas。 The production is terrific and I would listen to any audio drama in this universe including if one was based on Jar Jar Binks。 Actually that might be where I would draw a line in the sand。 Any audio drama based on anyone else would get a listen from me。 。。。more

1 hr 15 mins in, 1/9/21 - I haven't listened to an audiobook since I was a kid, and I've never listened to a full-length, "full-cast" book before -- basically a radio play。 I have pretty bad audio processing skills, and was completely lost for the first 45 mins or so。 Scott's specialty seems to be long disorienting battle sequences (see The Rising Storm), and the voice acting is a little ridiculous, but it's fun to have voices assigned for characters I've been following through various titles fo 1 hr 15 mins in, 1/9/21 - I haven't listened to an audiobook since I was a kid, and I've never listened to a full-length, "full-cast" book before -- basically a radio play。 I have pretty bad audio processing skills, and was completely lost for the first 45 mins or so。 Scott's specialty seems to be long disorienting battle sequences (see The Rising Storm), and the voice acting is a little ridiculous, but it's fun to have voices assigned for characters I've been following through various titles for a month or two now。 Unlike a lot of Star Wars purists (respect!), I'm pretty into the Nihil as the antagonists for the High Republic series。 They're basically space bikers, and have caused me to dig out my Dreadnoks action figures from my old toybox (YOOOOO JOOOOOE) while I work through the other books in the series。 Tempest Runner takes the Dreadnoks comparison one step further by giving all the Nihil different foreign accents -- where the old GI Joe baddies had classically overplayed Australian, British, Welsh, and Dutch accents, the Nihil are northern English, Russian, and main villain Lourna Dee is French。 Justina Ireland's Out of the Shadows was (as far as I noticed) the first book to comment on Dee's accent, but in the world of Star Wars the accent is attributed to a specific planet or family or other, suggesting at most that Dee is probably highborn。 In Tempest Runner she sounds for all the world like Marion Cotillard, and honestly Marion Cotillard playing Lourna Dee in a High Republic show would be effing dope。Anyway, I'm still having trouble processing a lot of this, and holy shit but the dude playing the Wookiee needs to stop forever。 Still, the last couple minutes of Part 1 ended with a character reveal that genuinely made my eyes pop while sitting on the couch having morning tea and playing this on my phone。 I really like Star Wars, but I don't have actual immersive fanboy moments with its lore very often, and the payoff here was charming enough that I'm going to try sticking it out for a little more。---COMPLETED, 1/13/21 - Not gonna lie, that was pretty friggin' great。 I mean, it was not good -- there was a part of this that we listened to in the car on the way to the vet and my wife was instantly like "oh my god this is awful," and she is not incorrect because the actors (the very very bad actors) committed so hard to their parts that there's legit a kissing scene in this book where you are just listening to the sounds of two Twi'leks sucking face for like thirty seconds straight, and it is super uncomfortable because your wife is sitting there in the passenger's seat looking at you in horror while your seven-year-old Korat yowls mournfully from her carrier and the Twi'leks won't stop frenching -- So anyway yes, let us be very clear that this book is extremely bad, but it is also excellent。 It's a straight-up women's prison book on a women's prison spaceship, and it's loaded with extremely confusing flashbacks that make sense to no one, and there's prison fights and prison riots and prison romance, and at least two spots where the sound effects just devolved into PEW PEW ARRGGHH NOOOO for so long that I straight up fell asleep and woke up and it was still happening。 Cavan Scott is definitely the guy on the High Republic team that got hired to give a 2000AD vibe to Star Wars, and although he's no Alan Grant (hell, he's barely even a Dan Abnett), he certainly doesn't shy away from filling Star Wars with some poop'd up sqwuak。 If you ever wanted to listen to a six-hour women's-prison-movie-but-also-Star-Wars (which is not a thing I knew I wanted, but now that I have it, I didn't not?), Tempest Runner is your friggin' book。 All you gotta do is read the 10-15 novels, YA things and comic series that lead up to it, and not care how often you fall asleep to PEW PEW ARRGGHH NOOOO, and you will be MADE IN THE SHADE BROHEME。 MADE-IN-THE-GODDAMN-SHADE。 。。。more

Audio dramas are a tough balance。 I grew up with radio dramas。。。back in the day (they were old reruns back then, too)。 The Shadow Knows, Fibber McGee and Molly, Gunsmoke, The Lone Ranger and Tarzan。 My Da and I listen to these old shows while we were working on projects in the basement。They were entertaining and captivated the mind。 The sound productions were fairly good (especially for the time), but these shows that LucasFilm does are quite exceptional in the foley work IMO。This was the beginn Audio dramas are a tough balance。 I grew up with radio dramas。。。back in the day (they were old reruns back then, too)。 The Shadow Knows, Fibber McGee and Molly, Gunsmoke, The Lone Ranger and Tarzan。 My Da and I listen to these old shows while we were working on projects in the basement。They were entertaining and captivated the mind。 The sound productions were fairly good (especially for the time), but these shows that LucasFilm does are quite exceptional in the foley work IMO。This was the beginnings (origin story) to a bad guy that will effect the Nihil。 It is a non-linear story, so there was a base point and flashbacks and reminiscences of the good ole days。 This Tempest Runner uses many aliases during this tale, but one that strikes the fear into all that hear it。。。 Lourna Dee。 This is HER tale, but it is told by others。。。along the way。。。some even her adversaries。it was good。 Wish it had been a little better。 I think the main complaint that I have, is that the acting is a little TOO over the top。 Scale it back just a little, allow the foley people to do their jobs, and I think this would've been amazing。I like that they've made a print book of it, too。 Need to add this to my collection。I am ONLY doing the books and the audiobooks, I just am not into comics。 I get my updates from Star Wars Explained once I finish a phase。 I am looking forward to the next set of books (and audio dramas) within this story。 。。。more
