Summary

Ice is in her blood。

Seventeen-year-old Waterrunner Eira Landan lives her life in the shadows — the shadow of her older brother, of her magic’s whispers, and of the person she accidentally killed。 She’s the most unwanted apprentice in the Tower of Sorcerers until the day she decides to step out and compete for a spot in the Tournament of Five Kingdoms。

Pitted against the best sorcerers in the Empire, Eira fights to be one of four champions。 Excelling in the trials has its rewards。 She's invited to the royal court with the “Prince of the Tower,” discovers her rare talent for forbidden magic, and at midnight, Eira meets with a handsome elfin ambassador。

But, Eira soon learns, no reward is without risk。 As she comes into the spotlight, so too do the skeletons of a past she hadn't even realized was haunting her。

Eira went into the trials ready for a fight。 Ready to win。 She wasn't ready for what it would cost her。 No one expected the candidates might not make it out with their lives。

This is the first book in a young adult, epic fantasy that's a tale of competition, coming of age, distant lands, elemental magic, and romance。 It's perfect for fans of the Legend of Korra, Truthwitch, and A Sorcery of Thorns。

All the feels and mysteryI loved this world in the previous two series, and I feel in love all over again in this one。 I especially like that even though three separate series take place in this world, you see a different aspect of the world or how it's changed because of the previous series。 I also appreciate that each series could be read separate because it's been so long since I first read Air Awakens that I'd forgotten a lot of details but this series explains everything we need to know。 Ha All the feels and mysteryI loved this world in the previous two series, and I feel in love all over again in this one。 I especially like that even though three separate series take place in this world, you see a different aspect of the world or how it's changed because of the previous series。 I also appreciate that each series could be read separate because it's been so long since I first read Air Awakens that I'd forgotten a lot of details but this series explains everything we need to know。 Having read the other series just gives more background story to fringe characters。 At the same time, this book doesn't spoil the other series by giving too many details and I'm here for it!This book had me in my feels。 I devoured this book in less than 24 hours and lost a lot of sleep (worth it) because it was simply too good to put down。 If you cry for/with characters, don't read this in public。 My heart both soared and broke right along with Eirra。 She's an amazing, kick butt heroine determined to spread her wings and gain confidence along the way。 And her relationship with her bff Alyss is amazing and spot on。 。。。more

I feel torn。 This one is a 3。5 stars。 I didn't like everything, but I feel like the sequel will be very interesting and the story might get better and better。 I'm excited for what's to come and to meet Eira's trials with The Court of Shadows。 Any romantic plot or interest is just meh, I really didn't like that aspect of the plot, nor did I like the semi-love triangle attempt。 I believe this story should be all about (view spoiler)[character development, vengeance and the quest for truth。 (hide s I feel torn。 This one is a 3。5 stars。 I didn't like everything, but I feel like the sequel will be very interesting and the story might get better and better。 I'm excited for what's to come and to meet Eira's trials with The Court of Shadows。 Any romantic plot or interest is just meh, I really didn't like that aspect of the plot, nor did I like the semi-love triangle attempt。 I believe this story should be all about (view spoiler)[character development, vengeance and the quest for truth。 (hide spoiler)] Therein lies the potential of this story。 。。。more

Unexpected from the expected。 I love this。 Nothing bad will come out from this author。 I like Eira so much, though she has the potential of becoming a villian with the power she manifested, but all the bad decisions she made were of good reasons。 I did tear up a bit on certain parts of story, the ending was not a cliff hanging one, thank God。 Hope book 2 will be ready this year。 Can't wait。 Unexpected from the expected。 I love this。 Nothing bad will come out from this author。 I like Eira so much, though she has the potential of becoming a villian with the power she manifested, but all the bad decisions she made were of good reasons。 I did tear up a bit on certain parts of story, the ending was not a cliff hanging one, thank God。 Hope book 2 will be ready this year。 Can't wait。 。。。more

First of all, I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK! I definitely didn't click on this book because of the cover Even if I did click on it because of the cover, I clicked on the right cover, DANG。 This book。。。 it's phenomenal。 Elise Kova made me actually FEEL what Eira was feeling。 And gosh。。。 Eira went through so much in this book。 I honestly wanted to punch so many people during this book。。。 it was a problem。 So many people wanted to hurt Eira, even her own FAMILY。 So many people tried to hold Eira First of all, I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK! I WAS SHIPPING EIRA AND FERRO SO FRICKIN' HARD (hide spoiler)] Anyway, the plot twist at the end was COMPLETELY unexpected and HEARTSHATTERING smart to include。BELOW is a spoiler of the entire book! DO NOT click on the "view spoiler" button if you haven't read the book yet。 INSTEAD, scroll until you see the asterisks (****) at the bottom。 That's who I recommend this book to!(view spoiler)[Y'all! Again, I was really going for Ferro! At first, I was on the cusp of either him or Cullen, but after Cullen called Eira a "danger to society," I fell HARD for Ferro。 (Just as Eira did) She said that she LOVED him。 Right before Marcus died。 The way that Ferro pretended to love Eira before flat-out trying to murder her shattered EVERYONE'S hearts。 Yes, even yours。 And the thing is。。。 I probably wouldn't have felt this betrayed if I hadn't loved Ferro myself。 I mean, this book had me thinking that I was Eira herself! I love these books where they have you forget your own name and think it's the main character's。 When Eira loved, I loved。 (And Eira loved hard。) And because of this, when Ferro betrayed Eira, all of the emotions that Eira felt, I felt。 I literally felt like encasing myself in ice for decades。 Okay, stepping away from the heartbreaking topic of Ferro, let's talk about Eira's family (Which isn't any less heartbreaking。) I hate them ALL。I hate them。I hate them。I hate them。I hate them。I hate them。。。 Here are some things because I hate them too much to write full paragraphs about them:1。 The adopted thing2。 Marcus and his disgusting "brotherly" tendencies3。 Fritz and Grahm4。 Her parents5。 AND SO MANY OTHER THINGS Nevermind, I'm gonna write some paragraphs。 The thing that peeved me the most with her family was when they'd just blast out some rude comment about her killing people。 Immediately after, they'd be like, "Oh sorry, I didn't mean that," or "It was a slip of the tongue。" Like, why do you always try to make excuses when you say it ALL。 THE。 TIME。 Literally, Eira couldn't get a break。 Next, something a little more lighthearted: Eira's magic Eira is a talented Sorceress! It's written all over everything she does。 The thing is, though, it can be。。。 different。 WHICH I BELIEVE IS GOOD, BUT SOME STUPID PEOPLE THINK NOT! Eira hears voices, and her powers are hard to control (mostly because her family won't let her use them half the time) For a little bit, they were talking about if Adela was Eira's mom。 YES PLEASE HAVE A MEAN PIRATE LADY BE EIRA'S MOM Alyss。。。 all I wanna say is。。。 I love you and never die。 Thanks。 Also, in my opinion, I hope Eira doesn't fall hopelessly in love with someone like she did with *sniffle* Ferro, and with Adam a few years back。 If there is a love interest in the next book, (¿Cullen?) I hope she'll play hard to get, and I hope if feelings DO surface that they'll surface toward the end of the book, as Eira is going through some crazy stuff already, and another love interest right now would be way too much for her。 (But I do hope that the next book will have a sort of theme that a woman doesn't need a man for anything in life。)I also really liked the parts where Eira was adored with Meru。 I think it gave the story a nice little touch。 (hide spoiler)] ****Anyway, thanks for listening to my rant! I would definitely recommend this to fantasy lovers, lovers of plot twists, and just generally anyone! This book has the perfect amount of romance, and it's as clean as a baby's behind。 Eira goes through many emotions throughout this book, which helps readers understand that she's human, that she goes through these things。**** In conclusion, READ THIS! Infinite Stars :) 。。。more

Eira is a survivorEria, the poor girl。 How many obstacles can she overcome? And there are a lot。 Not to give anything away but I will say every member of her family is hiding a secret from her。 And when she discovers what it is her heart is broken and she is terrified that it may be true。 While I read this story I was getting angry for Eira。 I think I would have broke down with the tragedies she faced and will continue to face。 What will happen in Meru?

This was the second book from this author that I have read, the first being "A deal with the Elf King"。This was a clean read, some subject matter may be too intense for very young readers。 Think "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", which this book mirrors a bit in plot。 Otherwise a good read and looking forward to the next installment。 This was the second book from this author that I have read, the first being "A deal with the Elf King"。This was a clean read, some subject matter may be too intense for very young readers。 Think "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", which this book mirrors a bit in plot。 Otherwise a good read and looking forward to the next installment。 。。。more

I am always weirdly proud when i am able to see plot twists in a book way before it happens。 Kinda like I have a third eye - dun dun dun。Okay enough with the games, here is a quick summary。 Your girl Eira is a water runner, and that means she has all the cool water bending powers。 There are also people with earth, fire, and wind powers。 So, the first conflict presented is that she accidentally killed someone when she was being bullied。 She also has the power to hear the voices of people which are attached to objects。 Really confusing unless you read the book for context。Moving on, this results in her being the outcast of the Tower (fun magic school/dorms)。 Now comes the fun part - her kingdom has made alliances with 4 others, and in good spirit, all five decided to have a competition involving the magic users。 Needless to say Eira signs up。 Stuff ensues and we have a recipe for disaster, and a very good story。With that out of the way, let me tell you what i liked。 Eira。 Plain and simple。 I must say i have recently gotten soooo tired of reading new books about female characters, because one thing that i have noticed in YA books and such is that there is only one type of female character anymore。 Now, all we get are these brash, arrogant characters that are supposed to seem confident but get on my nerves like nothing else。 I love me a confident character, but i feel like now all we have are characters saying they are the best while being subpar at best。 HOWEVER, the author did not do that at all, and that’s why i liked Eira。 She is being bullied, lives under the shadow of her brother, and her family doesn’t believe her when she says she hears voices。 She is also constantly aware of the fact that because of her killing another student, she is being held back。 Her family (except for Gwen her aunt, and Alyss her best friend) they have all said some really questionably things to her。 Regardless of all this, she sees the need for change and relies on herself to do it。 She ends up going against her family, but she sticks strong and still has her own fleshed out personality。 I also really loved how she is more quite but still doesn’t take let herself be walked on by others。I also really loved the dynamic between characters。 Development, maturity, and conflict all play huge parts in this book, and the author did a great job of not only having our female lead grow, but also all the other characters improve as well。 I was throughly enjoying myself throughout the book, and cannot wait to see more of Deneya in the second。 Now comes the parts I didn’t like about the book。 I think my major issue was the descriptive language during the trials and som of the settings。 I felt it was somewhat confusing and not clear。 One of the trials was an obstacle course, and i really really struggled to get a clear picture of what she was going through。 At some point i kinda game up understanding and just read through and pieced in my own imagination for what things were supposed to look like。 I know reading is half imagination but we are also supposed to be lead on bIy the aut her, so it felt really odd adding in my own setting to makes sense。 I mean。。。。 i tried。。。 really, honestly i did。。。 but i guess in the end of the day it wasn’t that big a deal because the other descriptions where fine。 Also i must say i was expecting something more from the trials。 Maybe that’s the real reason it’s 4 and not 5 stars from me。 It didn’t feel rushed, or even lacking as a whole when reading the book, but i think i have this bad habit of reading the words “trial” or “tests” and getting really high expectations, and then am disappointed when they don’t pan out。 I hope i am not the only one who does stupid things like that。 Oh well。At this point i have written enough that even I don’t want to go back and read what it is i have put down, and i also don’t trust that more than half isn’t just random ramblings with no point to them。 Continuing on to my closing thoughts。 Rating - 4 stars。 - Would recommend - definitely。 Read again - maybe (like 75% yes)。 Gonna read the second book - (in case it wasn’t obvious) yes。My only regret is the fact that i was stupid enough to read this book without checking the date that the second is gonna come out by, because now i am stuck waiting a whole bloody year before it comes out。 Yay me。 。。。more

A Trial of Sorcerers is a bit of a heart break。 Our main girl is an underdog, but not really。 Everyone in her life is trying to shove her in the corner “for her own good” and she can’t handle it anymore。 So what is she going to do about it? This is the first book I’ve read written by Elise Kova and I was totally invested in it。 I’ve been seeing this book a lot lately on bookstagram so I couldn’t stop myself from picking it up。 This book was totally not what I expected it to be。 Well, except for the fact that it was about a tournament for sorcerers。 I just couldn’t pass a book about tournaments。 I really love reading books about tournaments, duels and stuff especially one that’s mixed with magical elements。Eira was an unexpected her This is the first book I’ve read written by Elise Kova and I was totally invested in it。 I’ve been seeing this book a lot lately on bookstagram so I couldn’t stop myself from picking it up。 This book was totally not what I expected it to be。 Well, except for the fact that it was about a tournament for sorcerers。 I just couldn’t pass a book about tournaments。 I really love reading books about tournaments, duels and stuff especially one that’s mixed with magical elements。Eira was an unexpected heroine。 She’s a Waterrunner (someone who controls water obv), and is someone who is haunted by her grave mistake in the past when her emotions got the better of her and lost control of her powers。 Aside from that, she is also able to hear “voices” from things which even her own family doesn’t believe a thing she says save for her precious friend。 I truly admire her for owning that mistakes and trying her best to be better despite how other people treated her。 Her unique powers are driving people away from her and it hurts me thinking how much it’s killing her inside whenever they thought her crazy because of the “voices” she hear all the time。 She didn’t deserve getting slandered like that EVERY SINGLE DAY。I love how supportive her friend is, the friendship is too precious。 Alyss got to be one of my favorite supporting character in a book。 Oh and her aunt too。The family issue is the most frustrating part of this story。 I agree with Alyss saying that her whole family handled her situation very poorly and I was hurting for Eira too! She suffered too much emotionally。The magic system was great and I enjoyed reading about all the trials with the variety of powers the sorcerers had。 And the tournament! The romance was a love triangle I wasn’t really sure who to ship her with at first。 I mean, I was really suspicious about a certain character since he was a bit shady but yeah I was still a bit shocked when he showed his true colors。The major plot twist that happened totally shocked me especially since I didn’t even see it coming。 It accelerated very quickly and IT FREAKIN BROKE MY HEART! They were totally having a moment back there too 🥺。 The last few chapters were really intense and sad that I still couldn’t believe what I just read after a few minutes of finishing the book。This was a fast and interesting read with a gripping storyline and ended in a very surprising way。 The character development was amazing and I’m looking forward to see how much Eira would improve in the sequel。 。。。more

Eira is one the most admirable character I've read, for her strength and perseverance。 Although I felt that some of insecurities for her family including her uncles, brother and parents were quite wrong and she sounded ungrateful at few instances。 I found her dynamic with her friend and brother was perfect and also with Cullen。。。。 was thrilling。 I'm looking forward for more of eira & Cullen in the next series。 Eira is one the most admirable character I've read, for her strength and perseverance。 Although I felt that some of insecurities for her family including her uncles, brother and parents were quite wrong and she sounded ungrateful at few instances。 I found her dynamic with her friend and brother was perfect and also with Cullen。。。。 was thrilling。 I'm looking forward for more of eira & Cullen in the next series。 。。。more
