Listened to LeVar's reading。 I liked that he mentions the different meaning of chivalry。 It helped me reconsider what was just an okay story for me。 Listened to LeVar's reading。 I liked that he mentions the different meaning of chivalry。 It helped me reconsider what was just an okay story for me。 。。。more

5 starsThis was a really quick, funny, and enjoyable listen。 The audiobook took around 45 minutes, and this included an additional foreword from Neil Gaiman。This focused on Mrs Whitaker; a widow who enjoys going to the local charity shop to pick up Mills and Boons books, as well as any knick-knacks that take her fancy。 When she spots the Holy Grail for 30p she can't pass it up。 After all, it will look nice on the mantlepiece。It was a very simple plot, but the way the character was described was 5 starsThis was a really quick, funny, and enjoyable listen。 The audiobook took around 45 minutes, and this included an additional foreword from Neil Gaiman。This focused on Mrs Whitaker; a widow who enjoys going to the local charity shop to pick up Mills and Boons books, as well as any knick-knacks that take her fancy。 When she spots the Holy Grail for 30p she can't pass it up。 After all, it will look nice on the mantlepiece。It was a very simple plot, but the way the character was described was wonderful。 Mrs Whitaker felt like someone you might bump into on your way out into town。 There isn't much to talk about without potentially spoiling it so I will say you should look into and enjoy this short story。 。。。more

Listened to a BBC Audio version that opens with an interview with Neil Gaiman。 Narrated by a cast, led by Glenda Jackson。It’s a lovely story of an old woman who finds the Holy Grail at a second hand store。

Finally, an Arthur story worth reading! Obviously, I am kidding, but this is a fun, fun read。

Nice little short story。 Listened to it on LeVar Burton Reads。

This one I'd read before in the story collection, but happened across it again today on Levar Burton Reads。 It's a delightfully silly romp that begins when the elderly MC finds the holy grail at a thrift store。 Naturally, a knight soon shows up on a quest to find it。 Recommended, especially if you just need something light and silly to lift your mood。 This one I'd read before in the story collection, but happened across it again today on Levar Burton Reads。 It's a delightfully silly romp that begins when the elderly MC finds the holy grail at a thrift store。 Naturally, a knight soon shows up on a quest to find it。 Recommended, especially if you just need something light and silly to lift your mood。 。。。more

Listening to Levar Burton read this story to me was perfect。 His silky voice is coupled with this delicious tale of an elderly woman who buys the Holy Grail at a discount store, only to trade it to a knight with the best of intentions。 Levar asks the listener to think about who the chivalrous one is in the tale before he reads and remember that it may not be the one most likely going into the story。 I enjoyed the loving details that went into everything the elderly woman did。 It was as if she me Listening to Levar Burton read this story to me was perfect。 His silky voice is coupled with this delicious tale of an elderly woman who buys the Holy Grail at a discount store, only to trade it to a knight with the best of intentions。 Levar asks the listener to think about who the chivalrous one is in the tale before he reads and remember that it may not be the one most likely going into the story。 I enjoyed the loving details that went into everything the elderly woman did。 It was as if she meticulously planned out her thoughts and actions so that each were carried out with love, care, and generosity for others。 Stories by Neil Gaiman are always a joy to read for their details that make them come alive in my head in such a way that I can see them as really happening。 This one is no different, despite the fact that it strayed a bit from his usual style。 I hope that Levar plans to read another of Mr Gaiman's stories and I hope that Mr Gaiman never ceases to amaze me with all of his captivating ideas he brings to life on paper as he releases those beautiful stories that burst forth from his mind。 。。。more

A short story that manages to combine the mundane with high fantasy seamlessly while also poking fun at stereotypes about older women。 I've gone back to read and re-read it, as well as recommending it to everyone I know。 A short story that manages to combine the mundane with high fantasy seamlessly while also poking fun at stereotypes about older women。 I've gone back to read and re-read it, as well as recommending it to everyone I know。 。。。more

Neil Gaiman has a talent for blending the wonderful with the mundane and turning fairytales into idle gossip。 He did such a great job with this short modern day parable, and Levar Burton did such a good job reading it!

Extra star because LeVar Burton read it。 I thought it was a charming read but not special when compared to some of Gaiman's other work。 The tragedy of writing well! This was fun to listen to。 I loved Neil Gaiman’s introduction as much as the cute short story。 This is a fully dramatized production staring Glenda Jackson and Kit Harington。

Sara

Sweet sweet story of mythology meeting common sense old age。

This is one of my favorite short stories。 I love the juxtaposition between the mundane and fantasy。 The routine and the extraordinary。 I love Mrs。 Whitaker being exactly who she is, knowing what she values in her life, being intentional with her space, and not allowing expectations to override that。 If you like LaVar Burton—definitely let him read it to you on his podcast “LaVar Burton Reads,” episode 7, 2017。

Mrs Whitaker is an interesting character and the story was good。

Read as an audiobook。 Not sure what I thought about this。 Liked the story and it was amusing。 For a short story the introduction was a quarter of its length。 I was just going to tell him to be quiet ( or words to that effect) when it stopped。 A point for good timing。 I’m not a great short story person and although this was ok to fill a short journey it rather confirms my point。 Anyway it was ok。

Collected in in Smoke and Mirrors: Short Fiction and Illusions and M Is for Magic。 An old lady finds the holy grail at a thrift store, if only I were that talented at treasure hunting in those bargain bins! But soon, a knight on a quest comes calling。 A simple, heart-warming and charming tale。 Collected in in Smoke and Mirrors: Short Fiction and Illusions and M Is for Magic。 An old lady finds the holy grail at a thrift store, if only I were that talented at treasure hunting in those bargain bins! I didn't catch why there seemed to be a time loop。Also, I didn't like how nonchalant everything was, "there were some romance novels, and a fur coat, and the Holy Grail" type of thing。 Like was nobody else amazed by this? Then after Gallad gets refused the final step in his journey he just goes and shows his horse to some neighborhood kids like nothing was wrong? This was。。 nice。 I'm convinced that Burton's narration bumped this a whole star for me。 I don't even know if I would have been able to understand and articulate meaning from it without his help, though I did feel it。 And that's what Gaiman does so well, is make you feel things。 This story was nice。 It made me feel things。 The tension towards the climax was expertly done。 There were no epic duals or challenges, just two human beings with conflicting desires。 But the resolution was just as satisfy This was。。 nice。 I'm convinced that Burton's narration bumped this a whole star for me。 I don't even know if I would have been able to understand and articulate meaning from it without his help, though I did feel it。 And that's what Gaiman does so well, is make you feel things。 This story was nice。 It made me feel things。 The tension towards the climax was expertly done。 There were no epic duals or challenges, just two human beings with conflicting desires。 But the resolution was just as satisfying as any story with those epic moments。 And that is good writing。 Sorry, nice writing。 Very nice。 。。。more

This story is fun and subtly poignant, and the overall tone is humorous without trying too hard for comedy。 Most importantly though, listening to LeVar Burton read this is literally the best。
