Summary

One cottage。 Two strangers。
Every great love story starts somewhere 。 。 。

Cleo writes about love stories every day。 She just isn't living one of her own。

When the editor of her dating column asks her to marry herself on a remote Irish island – a sensational piece to mark Cleo's thirtieth birthday – Cleo agrees。 She's alone but not lonely, right? She can handle a solo adventure。

Cleo arrives at her luxury cabin to find a tall, dark, stubborn American who insists it's actually his。 Mack refuses to leave, and Cleo won't budge either。 With a storm fast approaching, they reluctantly hunker down together。 It's just one night, after all 。 。 。

But what if one night on the island is just the beginning?

Cleo was annoying AS FUCK in the beginning。 I seriously almost stopped reading because of it- but it's a Josie Silver novel so I pushed through。 Not as good as her other two- not even almost- but still a good bittersweet love story。 I'll continue to read anything she writes。 Cleo was annoying AS FUCK in the beginning。 I seriously almost stopped reading because of it- but it's a Josie Silver novel so I pushed through。 Not as good as her other two- not even almost- but still a good bittersweet love story。 I'll continue to read anything she writes。 。。。more

This book made me wish to visit Ireland。 Josie does a good job at writing complicated relationships。 I don't feel like all books, especially romance books have to have perfect characters。 The characters were flawed and had real issues to deal with。 I listened to this in audible and can appreciate that with a different male narrator, I might have loved this more, but as far as romance goes, I'd rate this a 3 leaning towards a 2。5。 I didn't quite believe their love story and felt that Josie skimme This book made me wish to visit Ireland。 Josie does a good job at writing complicated relationships。 I don't feel like all books, especially romance books have to have perfect characters。 The characters were flawed and had real issues to deal with。 I listened to this in audible and can appreciate that with a different male narrator, I might have loved this more, but as far as romance goes, I'd rate this a 3 leaning towards a 2。5。 I didn't quite believe their love story and felt that Josie skimmed over some details that might have explained it better。 The rest of the writing including the descriptive imagery of Ireland had me leaning more towards a 3。5。 。。。more

If you like Josie Silver's other books--and there's plenty to like about them--you'll likely enjoy this one as well。 Cleo is a single, about to be thirty-year old, who tries to spend some time alone on a tiny island。 Of course, the wrench in her plans is a bearded, somewhat brusque Bostonian who shows up to stay in the same cottage as Cleo。 Tropes about, but there isn't quite enough comedy in what would otherwise seem like a romcom formula。 Cleo is sad about being alone still, or sad that she's If you like Josie Silver's other books--and there's plenty to like about them--you'll likely enjoy this one as well。 Cleo is a single, about to be thirty-year old, who tries to spend some time alone on a tiny island。 Of course, the wrench in her plans is a bearded, somewhat brusque Bostonian who shows up to stay in the same cottage as Cleo。 Tropes about, but there isn't quite enough comedy in what would otherwise seem like a romcom formula。 Cleo is sad about being alone still, or sad that she's not sad enough about it。 Mack has a contentious relationship with his wife (or ex, as he later reveals), and misses his young boys。 It takes them FOREVER to like each other。 Definitely no sparks at first。 The island is pretty quiet。 There is a proverbial women's knitting group that Cleo walks in on。 It has lots of small-town, island charm。 It's just a very slow-moving book, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but you have to really hunker down。 Let the characters slowly discover themselves and then each other。 You know where this book is heading, and it's worth it, but you have to be in it for the journey。Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC of this book。 。。。more

Cleo, a writer for a dating column goes to a remote Irish island to marry herself。 Sounds strange but it is based on the idea that you shouldn't need don't need to find your significant other in order to be whole (Self-coupling)。 So she goes to a luxury cabin only to find it has been doubled booked and she has to share the cabin with a tall, dark, handsome man (of course lol)。 The ferry only leaves the island once a week (unless someone dies)。 And they are both adamant on staying but with nowher Cleo, a writer for a dating column goes to a remote Irish island to marry herself。 Sounds strange but it is based on the idea that you shouldn't need don't need to find your significant other in order to be whole (Self-coupling)。 So she goes to a luxury cabin only to find it has been doubled booked and she has to share the cabin with a tall, dark, handsome man (of course lol)。 The ferry only leaves the island once a week (unless someone dies)。 And they are both adamant on staying but with nowhere else to go they are forced to share the small cabin。This was a slow burn, enemies to lovers novel。 Maybe just a little too slow burn for me。 Although I did enjoy being in touch with the characters emotions at times it felt a little overdone。I routed for the couple throughout and really enjoyed this story。 The ending felt a little dragged out, (view spoiler)[I lost a bit of interest when Mac and Cleo were apart。 (hide spoiler)] But overall a very good story I read in less than 24 hours。 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 。。。more

One。 After reading the first few chapters I didn’t think I’d like the idea of the pair。 Mack was “married” and a family man。 Cleo played this uptight Brit who was on an eat-pray-love self mission。 I wasn’t sure this enemies-to-lovers/close-proximity trope would work。Two。 I’m so glad I was wrong。 I found myself yearning for this couple’s success。 Their love was uniquely special and romantically their own。 However, this isn’t your typical romance novel。 It’s also about the evolving love of self, f One。 After reading the first few chapters I didn’t think I’d like the idea of the pair。 Mack was “married” and a family man。 Cleo played this uptight Brit who was on an eat-pray-love self mission。 I wasn’t sure this enemies-to-lovers/close-proximity trope would work。Two。 I’m so glad I was wrong。 I found myself yearning for this couple’s success。 Their love was uniquely special and romantically their own。 However, this isn’t your typical romance novel。 It’s also about the evolving love of self, family, work, community and surroundings。 I laughed, cried, and had to pause at times just to get some air because it was so good I thought I might drown in the perfection of Josie Silver’s writing。Three。 She’s officially my favorite author and any book of hers will be an auto-buy。 Mind you I’ve only read this and One Day in December but both books are living rent-free in my head and have little “sliver” of my heart。Three (a)。 I don’t regret that last statement and don’t think I ever will。 IYKYK 😉 。。。more

I have mixed feelings about this book。 But ultimately went with 4 stars because I loved the themes and issues dealt with in this beautiful story about life。For the pros, Josie Silver knows how to write beautiful prose。 She deftly weaves complex characters in complicated situations。 Her character development and world-building took me to Salvation Island, knitting with the circle, drinking a Guinness at Raff's, wailing at the top of the mount。 I also love that it's not about a 20-year-old protago I have mixed feelings about this book。 But ultimately went with 4 stars because I loved the themes and issues dealt with in this beautiful story about life。For the pros, Josie Silver knows how to write beautiful prose。 She deftly weaves complex characters in complicated situations。 Her character development and world-building took me to Salvation Island, knitting with the circle, drinking a Guinness at Raff's, wailing at the top of the mount。 I also love that it's not about a 20-year-old protagonist。 I've picked up too many romance books lately only to find the protagonists are 20 or younger。 As I am well out of that demographic, I was excited to read about characters who have some life behind them。 And in my opinion, this isn't a rom-com nor even a romance。 This is a story about two people dealing with life。 And two people learning that even when life knocks you down, there are still beautiful moments in between the pain and tears。But 。 。 。 it bothered me that at the beginning, (view spoiler)[ and really until he finds out from his son that his wife is with someone else (hide spoiler)], Mack was very much focused on saving his marriage。 Except he wasn't。 He was hiding, running away from his problems, and using the "I'm giving her space" excuse。 He was really focused on his kids, and his backstory makes that make sense。 But Mack never really dealt with how he and Susie got to that point。 (view spoiler)[He went from can't let go of his marriage to accepting that it was over a bit too quickly but then kind of flip-flopped once he returned to Boston。 (hide spoiler)] I think Cloe's story has more, well closure isn't the right word because a life doesn't really have closure until death。 But her story is more filled out, so to speak。 Whereas Mack's story is still quite crinkly around the edges。 He doesn't have the same kind of revelations or growth。 He stays stuck longer。 We don't see his growth as clearly and I think that's what throws me off。 The two stories feel a bit unbalanced。 And I get it。 I like that the author does not shy away from complicated lives or complex situations and she doesn't try to tie everything up neat because life is messy。 Life happens。 And we can't always prepare or plan for it and sometimes we can't even move forward。Overall, I enjoyed this story。 I really connected to Cleo's story。 I like what Cleo says about the novel she wrote:It's an expression of womanhood and an exploration of sisterhood。 And despite the weakness around Mack's story, this is exactly what makes this story wonderful。 So 4 stars。 。。。more

It is a very enjoyable easy read and I was interested in the characters and outcome from the start。 It is written from the perspective of the two main characters and I enjoyed finding out about each of them。 One thing to note though is the language, a few times there is swearing, and although it’s not excessive, it is present so thought it worth a mention。 Overall, it’s well written with an interesting plot。 Thank you #netgalley。

Rounding up to ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ I can clearly understand the praise for this novel…the gorgeous writing, setting, community and complex characters。 I can also understand the disgruntled readers…。the unrelenting angst, and odd indulgence (self coupling/ marrying oneself?)So I sit on the fence。 Although I’m disappointed that this could have EASILY been a 5 star read, I still closed the book quite happy for having read it。
