Summary

Mutual fund superstar Peter Lynch and author John Rothchild explain the basic principles of the stock market and business in an investing guide that will enlighten and entertain anyone who is high school age or older。

Many investors, including some with substantial portfolios, have only the sketchiest idea of how the stock market works。 The reason, say Lynch and Rothchild, is that the basics of investing—the fundamentals of our economic system and what they have to do with the stock market—aren’t taught in school。 At a time when individuals have to make important decisions about saving for college and 401(k) retirement funds, this failure to provide a basic education in investing can have tragic consequences。

For those who know what to look for, investment opportunities are everywhere。 The average high school student is familiar with Nike, Reebok, McDonald’s, the Gap, and The Body Shop。 Nearly every teenager in America drinks Coke or Pepsi, but only a very few own shares in either company or even understand how to buy them。 Every student studies American history, but few realize that our country was settled by European colonists financed by public companies in England and Holland—and the basic principles behind public companies haven’t changed in more than three hundred years。

In Learn to Earn, Lynch and Rothchild explain in a style accessible to anyone who is high school age or older how to read a stock table in the daily newspaper, how to understand a company annual report, and why everyone should pay attention to the stock market。 They explain not only how to invest, but also how to think like an investor。

Not his finest work but still better than the best of an average writer。 I’ll leave a good quote from the book:“I can calculate the motions of heavenly bodies but not the madness of people。”

Great beginners guide to investing。 I had heard about it for a few years and glad I found it on audiobook。 Finished it in a single afternoon。

Gained some insight: some of the things addressed in this pretty dated book haven't changed over the years and are still applicable, anywhere in the world。 I stopped reading further in this book a while ago (was at about 65%), when I came upon lots of specific "practical information" on how to buy stock years ago, in the US。 I skimmed through the rest of the book to pick up on the other parts that could be relevant for me。It's funny。 For years I've felt very conflicted about the whole concept of Gained some insight: some of the things addressed in this pretty dated book haven't changed over the years and are still applicable, anywhere in the world。 I stopped reading further in this book a while ago (was at about 65%), when I came upon lots of specific "practical information" on how to buy stock years ago, in the US。 I skimmed through the rest of the book to pick up on the other parts that could be relevant for me。It's funny。 For years I've felt very conflicted about the whole concept of money, thinking all bigtime investors were selfish assholes (no offense)。 I'm still struggling with the capitalistic world we're living in, but reading books about investing is gradually changing my point of view。 I can now better see and understand how investing not only has the potential to generate "passive" income, which is nice for the investor, but also implies supporting a company or idea you as an investor believe in。 I still have to take the next step and to actually start investing some money, but I love the idea of supporting companies that are working towards a healthier, greener earth。 Let's apply this investment knowlegde for the good! 。。。more

Doesn't have many things to look upto and is filled with excessive story to make one single point。 Maybe few things a beginner can look upto but there are better options available。 Doesn't have many things to look upto and is filled with excessive story to make one single point。 Maybe few things a beginner can look upto but there are better options available。 。。。more

Learnt the basics of investing in the simplest way possible。 Case studies, guides to read numbers, resources were an added advantage。 I will recommend this book to everyone wanting to start investing。4 stars because it’s outdated in certain aspects considering it was written in the 90’s。 Overall, a good read to understand the basics

It's an amazing book if it's your first Peter Lynch or investment book but since I read "One Up On Wall Street" first, I didn't learn much more new information from it。 but it was such a quick read, or more precisely a quick listen that it felt very rewarding in exchange for the little time I spent on it which allowed me to at least remember some important investment information nonetheless。Also, the written book seems to have more useful graphs, tables, balance sheets that are useful to check。 It's an amazing book if it's your first Peter Lynch or investment book but since I read "One Up On Wall Street" first, I didn't learn much more new information from it。 but it was such a quick read, or more precisely a quick listen that it felt very rewarding in exchange for the little time I spent on it which allowed me to at least remember some important investment information nonetheless。Also, the written book seems to have more useful graphs, tables, balance sheets that are useful to check。 。。。more

Peter Lynch's Learn to Earn: A Beginners Guide was an interesting book and i should have read it before i read One up on Wall Street, because the later was the better book for me。Learn to Earn does exactly what it says, and that is it will give you guidance and clarity on what investing really is and how you should approach it as an individual。 I had and have as an individual investor already set my strategy and i am still working my way through the first stages of its evolutions。Learn to Earn t Peter Lynch's Learn to Earn: A Beginners Guide was an interesting book and i should have read it before i read One up on Wall Street, because the later was the better book for me。Learn to Earn does exactly what it says, and that is it will give you guidance and clarity on what investing really is and how you should approach it as an individual。 I had and have as an individual investor already set my strategy and i am still working my way through the first stages of its evolutions。Learn to Earn though, did reinforce everything that i was doing as right and it gave me a sense of relief that for all of the information that i had researched, digested and then acted upon, had been correct according to Peter Lynch's recommended style of investing。 There are a lot of opportunities out there in the everyday activities of our life that are both interesting and have great opportunities。 There is the potential to make a lot of money by investing for the long term and there is a lot of risk if you do not do your homework and you rush into investments that don't make sense or more importantly that you do not understand。I enjoyed how he explained and reinforced that life long learning is just as essential as is emotional stability。 The one thing that surprised me most was his strong endorsement and reinforcement of maintaining savings。 I have heard the ten percent rule before but Peter Lynch contextualised this beautifully when he combined it with ensuring that you need buy your own home and have some investments。Why did i not read these books before? I don't know, but that has now been rectified。I would also strongly encourage people to do what i did, and listen to this in audio format。 Peter Lynch reading his own books to you feels as though a mentor or a tutor is sitting down with and having a fascinating dinner conversation about finance。I learned a lot in his first book and now i have had those positive learnings reinforced。 I hope you enjoy the book as much as i did。 。。。more

After reading "One up on Wall Street" and "Beating the Street", I wanted to read this book mainly for completion and because I enjoyed Peter's writing style and humor。 Peter Lynch lays a solid foundation on markets and business fundamentals, if I'd go back I would start with this book before going into the other two。 After reading "One up on Wall Street" and "Beating the Street", I wanted to read this book mainly for completion and because I enjoyed Peter's writing style and humor。 Peter Lynch lays a solid foundation on markets and business fundamentals, if I'd go back I would start with this book before going into the other two。 。。。more

As the name mentions it is a beginners guide, ie if you know the basics about account and stock market, this book isn't for you because it covers the really basic topics。 I have no idea why this book is considered in 'essential books' when it comes to stock market since it covers the bare essential, something many people who want to invest in stocks will probably be already aware about。 As the name mentions it is a beginners guide, ie if you know the basics about account and stock market, this book isn't for you because it covers the really basic topics。 I have no idea why this book is considered in 'essential books' when it comes to stock market since it covers the bare essential, something many people who want to invest in stocks will probably be already aware about。 。。。more
