A Hunt for Shadows brings us to Meru, the hosting land for the competition。 In this second book, Eira spends most of it playing detective for the Court of Shadows, a political group out to battle the pillars trying to bring about the revival of a long-dead secret。 There is not a lot of focus on the actual competition as in this book they spend time training and getting to know the other competitors。 I would have liked to see the competition start, but book three is in the wings, and that's when A Hunt for Shadows brings us to Meru, the hosting land for the competition。 In this second book, Eira spends most of it playing detective for the Court of Shadows, a political group out to battle the pillars trying to bring about the revival of a long-dead secret。 There is not a lot of focus on the actual competition as in this book they spend time training and getting to know the other competitors。 I would have liked to see the competition start, but book three is in the wings, and that's when I am sure we get some perfect edge-of-your-seat action。 This second book is more a builder to get some key facts and some background uncovered before the actual battles come to light, at least I think so anyway。 The slow-burn romance between Eira and the forbidden prince is heart-wrenching and so touching。 I thoroughly enjoyed this second book, even if we did not get to the competition yet。 。。。more

A Hunt of Shadows is book 2 from A Trial of Sorcerers series and the story picks up little after the end of book 1。Eira Landan, the main character, is traveling to Meru to enter the Five Kingdom Tournament, along with the other 3 competitors from Solaris。 She has grown distant from her friends, closed off in grief and revenge plans。 While they are heading to Risen, Meru’s capital, Ferro, that was also being escorted back as a prisoner on the same boat, escapes and they arrive at a city under loc A Hunt of Shadows is book 2 from A Trial of Sorcerers series and the story picks up little after the end of book 1。Eira Landan, the main character, is traveling to Meru to enter the Five Kingdom Tournament, along with the other 3 competitors from Solaris。 She has grown distant from her friends, closed off in grief and revenge plans。 While they are heading to Risen, Meru’s capital, Ferro, that was also being escorted back as a prisoner on the same boat, escapes and they arrive at a city under lockdown。Eira meets the competitors and dignitaries from the other realms entering the tournament, but she has other concerns, namely entering the mysterious Court of Shadows, mentioned on book 1, by Deneya。I felt that this book is quite different from book 1, as it is darker in many ways。 The political intrigue is much more developed and there’s not so much focus on the tournament itself。 There’s also an immense character growth, as Eira navigates through dangerous worlds and powerful players。 She learns more about the depth of her powers。 We also get some developments on the slow burn subplot。 The story is fast paced, which works perfectly。 One of the aspects I have to highlight, as a reader, is that I didn’t connect to Eira as immediately as I had on book 1, because she felt somehow more immature and acting without much thinking, endangering herself and those around her unnecessarily。 But as I progressed through my reading, all the pieces came together。 There are a lot of plot twists and when you think you know what is coming, something surprising happens! I’ve finished this book with even more questions than I’ve started with, but I’m definitely looking forward to reading book 3。 。。。more

Elise Kova takes the A Trial of Sorcerers series to a whole other level with this sequel! After the insane ending in the first book, I was not sure what to expect with this book。As Eira and her companions travel to Meru for the Tournament of Five Kingdoms, the future looks uncertain for her。 Readers will be delighted with the new world we are introduced to as well as a host of new and exciting characters。 The stakes are higher and Eira is faced with new challenges like never before。 I simply can Elise Kova takes the A Trial of Sorcerers series to a whole other level with this sequel! My only complaint is that once again, I am left bereft after the last page and need the next book ASAP!A Hunt of Shadows is the heart pounding sequel in the A Trail of Sorcerers series。 Filled with thrilling adventure, magic and romance, you will not want this book to end! Another five star read from Elise Kova。 。。。more

First off let me so I was STOKED to receive an ARC for A Hunt of Shadows。 It was one of the books I was very much looking forward to in 2022。 I found I enjoyed the second half of the story more than the first。I was frustrated with most of the main characters in the first half。 I found it a little hard to relate to their interpersonal skills。 For one Eira's lifelong dream and passion were to see Mure, meet its people, and enjoy its beauty。 But her grief was so heavy we as the reader didn't get to First off let me so I was STOKED to receive an ARC for A Hunt of Shadows。 It was one of the books I was very much looking forward to in 2022。 I found I enjoyed the second half of the story more than the first。I was frustrated with most of the main characters in the first half。 I found it a little hard to relate to their interpersonal skills。 For one Eira's lifelong dream and passion were to see Mure, meet its people, and enjoy its beauty。 But her grief was so heavy we as the reader didn't get to enjoy any of that with her。 I suppose reading the connection series with Vi first would be a great idea。 Eira never seemed to think through her actions and her grief made her avoid her friends and very singularly minded when it came to revenge。 A good part of the book was her sulking in her room, avoiding her friends, or treating them badly for showing concern and making huge mistakes。 But on the same note, it was believable because grief can manifest in unexpected ways。 I just hate the trope where the MC withdraws from everyone because no one can understand their feelings。 Eira did show growth and was able to learn from her mistakes。 I agree with another reviewer that there seemed to be a bit of repetition at the beginning of the story and that the relationship between Cullen and Eira didn't really click for me。 I can see where they were attracted to each other through similar backgrounds。 BTW I love Cullen, more than I like Eira, to be honest。 But there really wasn't much interaction between them。 I would have loved to see them working together more often but Eira was very impulsive and seemed to do most things alone。 As I said though she did learn and grow I think not having Cullen on screen most of the time hurt the flow of the romance。 (view spoiler)[Oh and Cullen。。。。。 In what universe was keeping that info from her a good idea?? I really enjoyed this story, and don't know how this author managed to pack so much into this book, yet keep it so easy to follow。 The story starts with Eira and her Solaris teammates traveling to Meru for the Tournament of Five Kingdoms。 Being in Meru is a dream come true for Eira, but she isn't able to enjoy it, due to her desire for vengeance on the man who so completely fooled her and used her knowledge to kill Solaris sorcerers。 To accomplish this, Eira's goal is to join the Court of Shadow I really enjoyed this story, and don't know how this author managed to pack so much into this book, yet keep it so easy to follow。 The story starts with Eira and her Solaris teammates traveling to Meru for the Tournament of Five Kingdoms。 Being in Meru is a dream come true for Eira, but she isn't able to enjoy it, due to her desire for vengeance on the man who so completely fooled her and used her knowledge to kill Solaris sorcerers。 To accomplish this, Eira's goal is to join the Court of Shadows, a secret group which was formed to uphold and defend the current monarchy and who are in direct opposition to the man Eira seeks to bring to justice。 Between the stress of the upcoming tournament, the secrets of the Court of Shadows and the rebel group, her growing feelings for one of her fellow competitors, and the undercurrent of grief at how she hurts people she loves; Eira's life is spiraling out of control。 Will her desire for vengeance endanger her friends? Will she be able to navigate and survive a dangerous path between the opposing groups? Can she come to grips with her growing feelings for the Prince of the Tower? If you like well written, action-packed fantasy, with wonderful characters, good world building, and a constant thread of tension throughout, you'll love this book。 But please note, if you stumble upon this one first, go back and read "A Trial of Sorcerers", which is the first book in the series to get the back story on the world and characters in this book。 It's very well done also and well worth the time。 。。。more

Her grief an open wound, Eira is obsessed with getting revenge。 The gleaming metropolis of Risen that she has dreamed of for years, full of magical people from all walks of life, is unfamiliar territory where her enemies lay in hiding。 Caught up in the undercurrents of the city as the Court of Shadows battles with the Pillars for the future of Meru, Eira will have to dive deeper into her power if she is to survive。 Eira is, as always, such a fun protagonist to follow。 She's not particularly heroic, but she's a survivor and she's willing to play dirty。 At the same time, this book has her open up to the people she loves, to bring her back from the darkness that's always lurking within her。 She goes through so much yet emerges all the stronger for it。 Seriously, though, girl needs a hug and a hot chocolate。 The plot kept me riveted, with Eira edging toward danger and the constant mystery of who we can trust。 The Pillars are absolutely awful and they make terrific antagonists for Eira to go up against。 And for all the Vortex Chronicles folk, getting to see a few familiar faces is so, so wonderful。 Elise Kova's ability to balance heart with action really shines in this one。 Super stoked for book 3, but man does 2023 feel like an eternity away。 -(Late night ravings after finishing the book in one go): I’ll come back and write a full review later but I just gotta say that I am in MISERY。*Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review* 。。。more
