Yes, you can draw in thirty days after following the exercises in this book。 How well you draw, depends on how much effort you put into those thirty days。LESSONS TEACHING DRAWING BASICSThe author of You Can Draw in 30 Days is Mark Kistler, a drawing teacher and host of public television’s Mark Kistler’s Imagination Station。 In this book, he takes you through a course of thirty lessons, teaching you some basic techniques of drawing。 The lessons focus on drawing building-block shapes (cubes, spher Yes, you can draw in thirty days after following the exercises in this book。 How well you draw, depends on how much effort you put into those thirty days。LESSONS TEACHING DRAWING BASICSThe author of You Can Draw in 30 Days is Mark Kistler, a drawing teacher and host of public television’s Mark Kistler’s Imagination Station。 In this book, he takes you through a course of thirty lessons, teaching you some basic techniques of drawing。 The lessons focus on drawing building-block shapes (cubes, spheres, cylinders) and using basic techniques (shading, foreshortening, overlapping, perspective) in their creation。 He applies these shapes and techniques to some common forms (house, flower, flag, scroll, wave, pyramid) with some follow-on advanced lessons (cityscape, room, castle, two-point perspective)。 Overall, these lessons go from drawing shaded spheres to drawing human faces, eyes, and hands。THE NINE FUNDAMENTAL LAWS OF DRAWINGI was a decent artist in my youth, but gave it up for many years。 Recently, I decided to try again but felt I needed some kind of instruction to get me back into drawing。 I found Mr。 Kistler’s book and followed it through all thirty lessons。 I have not seen any of Mr。 Kistler’s television programs or YouTube videos。 I did not want to be influenced by them。 I strictly followed this book and it did help, very much, to relight my artistic fires。 I was impressed。Be aware that this book does not teach you to draw complex pictures。 That is not its purpose。 It is an elementary level art book, and it focuses on exercises drawing the basic forms mentioned above using basic techniques。 In the process, Mr。 Kistler focuses on Nine Fundamental Laws of Drawing upon which he hangs his lessons to create a foundation for the budding artist。I was acquainted with these nine laws from my early years in art classes in high school and college (though they were not called “nine laws”)。 But I don’t recall them being taught in a manner as understandable as they are in this book (they are listed on page 188)。 AN ARC OF BUILDING COMPLEXITYThe lessons follow an arc of growing complexity from the book’s start to finish。 Not too complex for the beginner, however。 You should simply bear in mind that these are exercises and not tutorials for making finished drawings。What you learn in these lessons, however, will be foundation enough for you to delve into your own drawing complexities and really expand on the lessons。 Student examples after each lesson give you an idea of where you can go with the fundamentals you are learning。The bonus challenges are, for the most part, not guided deeper dives into a lesson, but are either student examples you can copy (nothing wrong with that—in art, you can learn from copying and even tracing) or something extra-curricular (searching for koalas to draw on the Internet)。 The best bonus is the one for Lesson 28。PROVIDING A CONFIDENT BASELINEThis book did bring me back into drawing with enough ability to create something decent。 I hope to create some illustrations for my next self-published novel。 Very likely, I will get at least one more art book and try to hone my skills to the level I need。 But You Can Draw in 30 Days has given me the reasonable confidence that I can draw again。 。。。more

My wife says I couldn’t draw a square, until I learned from this book。It took me through the basics, and even had me dip my toes into some more complex forms。 I’m grateful to this book for making it easy, and enjoyable to learn how to draw。I highly recommend it。

I like drawing。 I've never really been all that good at it but it is something I enjoy。 In the hopes of getting a little better at it I figured out that I needed to go back and learn the basics again。 Then I thought about Mark Kistler and his wonderful show on PBS when I was a kid。 Turns out he is still out there and still teaching people how to draw。 Mr。 Kistler is encouraging, energetic and enthusiastic and this is a fantastic introduction to drawing。 If you are convinced that you can't draw b I like drawing。 I've never really been all that good at it but it is something I enjoy。 In the hopes of getting a little better at it I figured out that I needed to go back and learn the basics again。 Then I thought about Mark Kistler and his wonderful show on PBS when I was a kid。 Turns out he is still out there and still teaching people how to draw。 Mr。 Kistler is encouraging, energetic and enthusiastic and this is a fantastic introduction to drawing。 If you are convinced that you can't draw but wish you could, you should really check this out。 You will be amazed at what you can do! 。。。more

Great book for people like me who has no skill in drawing。 Huge improvement from my pretest to the last drawings I had。 I can hardly believe that I am able to draw an eye, face and hand。 These are something I've never done before。 Still need a lot of practice but at least there's progress from stick man to now more defined drawing。 Great book for people like me who has no skill in drawing。 Huge improvement from my pretest to the last drawings I had。 I can hardly believe that I am able to draw an eye, face and hand。 These are something I've never done before。 Still need a lot of practice but at least there's progress from stick man to now more defined drawing。 。。。more

Other "beginner" drawing books start out with impossible things and no actual instructions, leaving a true beginner even more dejected than when he picked up the book。 Some of us learned at age 8 that we sucked at drawing, and this book encourages us to pick up a pencil again and try - with some form of success。 After 20-some lessons, I can draw from simple photographs。 Basic, amateur - sure。 But it's better than where I started, and it's fun! The steps made it easy to understand how to draw each lesson。 Well, I had difficulties with the last chapter, but practice makes progress。 I skipped a few passages when they strayed from the task。 I enjoyed it。 The chapters went from simple to creative challenges that were fun when completed。 And, it was exciting to see how much I improved each chapter。 It made me want to pursue drawing people next。 I recommend this book to any art lover who believes they can't draw。 The steps made it easy to understand how to draw each lesson。 Well, I had difficulties with the last chapter, but practice makes progress。 I skipped a few passages when they strayed from the task。 I enjoyed it。 The chapters went from simple to creative challenges that were fun when completed。 And, it was exciting to see how much I improved each chapter。 It made me want to pursue drawing people next。 I recommend this book to any art lover who believes they can't draw。 。。。more

This was a good start to picking up the pencil again, it helped start the habit, which is half the battle。 Each lesson was so easy to understand and quick to do。 I took away some good points that I’ll use。 The habit was formed。

I really, really enjoyed learning how to draw with Mark Kistler! I just drew three hands today!! I supplemented the lessons with YouTube videos, but I would never have thought I could even watch drawing videos had I not stumbled upon this book。

Julie

Checked out an ebook copy of it from my local library。 I liked it so much I bought a physical copy。

Before this book, I simply wasn’t able to draw anything。 I can say now, I am happy with my new drawing skill and discover that I just love it。

I like his section on 2D perspective and he diffidently had some good advise but I dare say I enjoyed his kids drawing books (Imagination Station) better。 But then I like whimsical drawing best。 Mark does break the steps of drawing down well which is perfect for the beginner (like me)。

I think drawing is a skill everyone should learn。 Through art we express ourselfes with the wildest imaginations possible。 And the joy of finishing a masterpiece is so rewarding, that creativity transforms into addiction。 At least, that's what I experienced during these few magical days。 Ahh yes, I said magical because I don't any know any other way to describe it。 Maybe it was actual Magic that lurked behind shadows。 Drawing itself doesn't have any flaws, it's the firm base of our own imaginati I think drawing is a skill everyone should learn。 Through art we express ourselfes with the wildest imaginations possible。 And the joy of finishing a masterpiece is so rewarding, that creativity transforms into addiction。 At least, that's what I experienced during these few magical days。 Ahh yes, I said magical because I don't any know any other way to describe it。 Maybe it was actual Magic that lurked behind shadows。 Drawing itself doesn't have any flaws, it's the firm base of our own imagination of course, it can't possibly be flawed, but process can be a journey of trails and errors。 This nature is the reason for most of children to loose the optimism of glittering artistic career。 But as I said earlier, such forgein programming was something of a past for me once I landed my eyes over this book。 I would highly encourage you to read this book。 Drawing is something is not just enjoyable but also useful in our daily lives。 This book makes it even clear and easier。Oh boy, I just ended it a secs ago and can feel the nostalgia。。。Masterpiece, Mark Kistler 😍💖 。。。more

I loved this book。 I was always bad at drawing but wanted to feel more confident by using this skill and decided to start learning with this book。 Over the lessons, I not only acquired practice but discovered how small details can take any drawing to a whole new level。 The method uses the nine fundamentals laws of drawing, and the book has lots of good examples。 If interested, a before and after image: https://www。flickr。com/photos/vylia/5。。。 I loved this book。 I was always bad at drawing but wanted to feel more confident by using this skill and decided to start learning with this book。 Over the lessons, I not only acquired practice but discovered how small details can take any drawing to a whole new level。 The method uses the nine fundamentals laws of drawing, and the book has lots of good examples。 If interested, a before and after image: https://www。flickr。com/photos/vylia/5。。。 。。。more

I had one of his drawing books as a kid, but I absolutely loved this drawing book focused on adults。 His strategies and hacks to help see component shapes were especially useful。

This book is brilliant。 Mark walks the reader through simple exercises then reveals all the concepts you've learned and put into practice! I am slowly moving through the book but you probably could do it in 30 days。 It's definitely improved my drawing。 This book is brilliant。 Mark walks the reader through simple exercises then reveals all the concepts you've learned and put into practice!
