Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • This tenth-anniversary edition of the game-changing #1 New York Times bestseller features a new foreword and new tools to make the work your own。

For over a decade, Brené Brown has found a special place in our hearts as a gifted mapmaker and a fellow traveler。 She is both a social scientist and a kitchen-table friend whom you can always count on to tell the truth, make you laugh, and, on occasion, cry with you。 And what’s now become a movement all started with The Gifts of Imperfection, which has sold more than two million copies in thirty-five different languages across the globe。
What transforms this book from words on a page to effective daily practices are the ten guideposts to wholehearted living。 The guideposts not only help us understand the practices that will allow us to change our lives and families, they also walk us through the unattainable and sabotaging expectations that get in the way。
Brené writes, “This book is an invitation to join a wholehearted revolution。 A small, quiet, grassroots movement that starts with each of us saying, ‘My story matters because I matter。’ Revolution might sound a little dramatic, but in this world, choosing authenticity and worthiness is an absolute act of resistance。”

My third book by Brene - not as good as her later stuff when her ideas really came together, but definitely still interesting and inspiring。 She always makes me want to be the very best version of myself。

I've seen the TedTalk。 I thought I would like this book more。 I thought there would be more revelations。 Or at least, more laughs。 The honest revelations are the best part of the book; the researchy analysis are dry。 Truly, the best parts of this book are in the TedTalk。 Also, as with research books (like the Blue Zone), the authors seem compelled to give recommendations based on their research, which I find sortof pithy and annoying。 fin。 I've seen the TedTalk。 I thought I would like this book more。 I thought there would be more revelations。 Or at least, more laughs。 The honest revelations are the best part of the book; the researchy analysis are dry。 Truly, the best parts of this book are in the TedTalk。 Also, as with research books (like the Blue Zone), the authors seem compelled to give recommendations based on their research, which I find sortof pithy and annoying。 fin。 。。。more

I love Brene Brown and hearing about her research and experiences。 There was a large handful of “ah-ha” moments in this book for me。

In a world where we find a sense of self-importance and meaning in being busy and running around frantically to meet a standard that doesn't really exist, this text provides soulish truth on the importance of rest, play, and calling despite the societal shame that hovers to consume us。 Emphasizing vulnerability and being honest about our individual search for worthiness, Brene assists the reader in exploring what we find our worthiness in。 She unmasks the hustle that our society purports。 Cultiv In a world where we find a sense of self-importance and meaning in being busy and running around frantically to meet a standard that doesn't really exist, this text provides soulish truth on the importance of rest, play, and calling despite the societal shame that hovers to consume us。 Emphasizing vulnerability and being honest about our individual search for worthiness, Brene assists the reader in exploring what we find our worthiness in。 She unmasks the hustle that our society purports。 Cultivating an intentionality about practicing stillness, sleep, play, and letting go of exhaustion are mentioned as ways of embracing wholehearted living。 。。。more

I'm always wary of people who repeat over and over again how they "did SO MUCH research" and spent "years researching this" and yet include no data whatsoever。 Don't tell me, show me。 I'm always wary of people who repeat over and over again how they "did SO MUCH research" and spent "years researching this" and yet include no data whatsoever。 Don't tell me, show me。 。。。more

A perfect time to read this book for the second time。 During the pandemic, I've lost sight of some of the important principles it contains。 A perfect time to read this book for the second time。 During the pandemic, I've lost sight of some of the important principles it contains。 。。。more

So much to reflect upon! ❤️

The way the book was organized into guideposts made it easy to set down and pick back up。 Some of it felt more anecdotal (which might make others take exception)。 In my eyes, Brene Brown's strength has always been her real and direct delivery (she doesn't go on and on before dropping her point)。 Also, she doesn't try to put herself above the reader which likely makes her ideas more palatable。 The way the book was organized into guideposts made it easy to set down and pick back up。 Some of it felt more anecdotal (which might make others take exception)。 In my eyes, Brene Brown's strength has always been her real and direct delivery (she doesn't go on and on before dropping her point)。 Also, she doesn't try to put herself above the reader which likely makes her ideas more palatable。 。。。more

I'm not a huge fan of self help books, but I wanted to see what all the hype was about Brene Brown。 Starting out I was fully prepared to be the worst critic, assuming the author to be overrated。 Well, she didn't turn me into a super fan, but she did prove me wrong。 I enjoyed the book and understand why people enjoy her so much。 Her research and quotes are good, but what I really liked and connected to was listening to her real life stories。 I'm not a huge fan of self help books, but I wanted to see what all the hype was about Brene Brown。 Starting out I was fully prepared to be the worst critic, assuming the author to be overrated。 Well, she didn't turn me into a super fan, but she did prove me wrong。 I enjoyed the book and understand why people enjoy her so much。 Her research and quotes are good, but what I really liked and connected to was listening to her real life stories。 。。。more

So glad my friend recommended this。 I like to think I'm fairly put together, living well, etc, but sometimes it's good to be reminded of certain things。 So glad my friend recommended this。 I like to think I'm fairly put together, living well, etc, but sometimes it's good to be reminded of certain things。 。。。more

It's a great book regardless of one's age but especially good for younger people。 But it's never too late too live wholeheartedly and embrace the gifts of imperfection - courage, compassion, and connection。 I see a lot of discussions coming up with my teenager from this read。 It's a great book regardless of one's age but especially good for younger people。 But it's never too late too live wholeheartedly and embrace the gifts of imperfection - courage, compassion, and connection。 I see a lot of discussions coming up with my teenager from this read。 。。。more

Great short book to read and reread whenever you need self reflection

This is not a love song, or a self-help book。 Or it IS a love song because it really looks at self love。 There are things in here that will blow people's minds: "What do you mean you shouldn't judge yourself of your achievements? How else do you do it?" I understand people who want more traditional self help books, but I would argue this is what's really going to help you if you can even hear a little of iit。 I write this having been a "fan" of Brene Brown bu it took me forever to actually read This is not a love song, or a self-help book。 Or it IS a love song because it really looks at self love。 There are things in here that will blow people's minds: "What do you mean you shouldn't judge yourself of your achievements? My therapist made me watch Brené’s ted talks a few years ago。 I realize now, after reading this book, that a great deal of what we talked about had to do with this book and the research that it presents。 Definitely not a self-help book。 Just genuinely life-altering。

An easy read。 It uses lots of storytelling。 In some instances, it's hard to relate to the stories, because of background or cultural differences。 It may have a syndrome of "Storytelling Overload"。 The book precisely does its job, to share insights to living a wholehearted life, with gifts of the imperfection of us, now itself。 Not shifting things for any better time。 Heavily recommended for almost every human。 An easy read。 It uses lots of storytelling。 In some instances, it's hard to relate to the stories, because of background or cultural differences。 It may have a syndrome of "Storytelling Overload"。 The book precisely does its job, to share insights to living a wholehearted life, with gifts of the imperfection of us, now itself。 Not shifting things for any better time。 Heavily recommended for almost every human。 。。。more

One of the most “eye opening” books I’ve ever read。 Definitely recommend it。

Brene’s work is always a balm to my soul, in large part because I’m an enneagram 4w3, and shame is my big thing。 Her work helps me unravel the deepest parts of my struggles to live freely and wholeheartedly and vulnerably。 This one, like her others, is one I will reference over and over for reminders about how I am worthy just as much as anyone else of love and connection。

Ahmed

Good points。 But lack any scientific adhesion between the ten guideposts。 I stopped reading after she declares spirituality is what makes you resilient in the 3rd guidepost。 This reads likes bs to me 。

I do love Brene Brown and her findings on the innate human desires。 This book is a true journey of 10 guideposts with authentic examples of living and not living the Wholehearted Life。 The premise is information supported by the research and life experience of the lady who scientifically studies, interviews, lives and breathes these human condition questions。 This info allows us to discover through reflection what is best in our own lives to living wholeheartedly。

Sarah Rock

Good reminders that are worth repeating。

For my level of psychotherapy knowledge and for my level of emotional intelligence this book was just perfect。 I do feel like reading it once again to digest deeper some of the concepts。 The author does a great job of "unpacking" broad and vast terms。 Loved the bibliography and references that pointed me into the addictive direction of other self-analysis and self-reflection works。 As this book was a quick purchase, I only now learned that there is one more, preceding it, "I Thought It Was Just For my level of psychotherapy knowledge and for my level of emotional intelligence this book was just perfect。 I do feel like reading it once again to digest deeper some of the concepts。 The author does a great job of "unpacking" broad and vast terms。 Loved the bibliography and references that pointed me into the addictive direction of other self-analysis and self-reflection works。 As this book was a quick purchase, I only now learned that there is one more, preceding it, "I Thought It Was Just Me (But It Isn't)", now I would really like to read that one as well, It seems to me it would be a solid base for "Gifts。。" and for the following "Daring greatly" (which I have not yet read, but looking forward to starting ASAP)。 。。。more
