Monster on the Hill is a wonderful story。 It is paced perfectly with awesome characters。 I had read Wink by this author, but had no idea he was an illuatrator。 My 5th graders will be all over this。 And I had never heard of it。 What a great surprise!

I read the version translated from English into Norwegian with my boyfriend helping to translate some of the trickier idioms/phrases for me。 Really nice way to practice language skills! Every city needs a monster to protect it, and also to occasionally wreak havoc and destroy some buildings in good fun。 But Rayburn has lost his mojo, and with it his town is suffering from low morale。 Enter Wilkie and Tim, an unlikely duo (mad scientist meets street urchin paperboy) who are set on confronting their lame monster once and for all! What happens next is a heartwarming road trip, a lovely camaraderie between characters, and some strange shape-shifting shenanigans。。。 。。。more

This book was so damn cute! With tongue-in-cheek humour, sarcasm, and beautifully created artwork, this tale had everything that I was looking for。 Set in a fantastical England, during the late 1800's, every town has its own monster。 The monster is meant to be fearsome, bringing in tourists, but also providing a sense of pride for the townsfolk。 Sadly, for the people of Stoker-on-Avon, their monster is feeling a little out of sorts。 And so this brings an unlikely pair together, Dr Wilkie and a s This book was so damn cute! Content concerns: some bad language (hell, bloody, sucks) and some scary situations (it's about monsters after all!)This was a very charming story probably most appropriate for middle-grade elementary, though I found it pretty enjoyable even as an adult。 Good art, funny script, and well-paced。 Content concerns: some bad language (hell, bloody, sucks) and some scary situations (it's about monsters after all!)This was a very charming story probably most appropriate for middle-grade elementary, though I found it pretty enjoyable even as an adult。 Good art, funny script, and well-paced。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Rayburn visits his old monster friend Noodles with the Doctor and kid in tow。 Rayburn and the Doc search for a psycho tree。 The fruit from the psycho tree changes Timmy back to normal。 Rayburn beats Murk with the help of Timmy and the Doctor。

Dudes。 Dudes as far as the eye can see。 I think there was *one* minor named female character with lines? In the whole book??? That was basically the nail in the coffin of an already boring book, for me。

This was a delightful story of a monster with some self-confidence issues who teamed up with a group of misfits to work on its self-doubt and save its town。 Absolutely heartwarming!

RAYBURN! RAYBURN! I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH! I haven’t laughed so unabashedly at a book in I don’t remember when。 It’s such a wonderful story about self-confidence and friendship and bravery for young and old alike。 The characters were darling, the illustrations were outstanding, and the story was monstrously amazing。 Three cheers for Rayburn, Wilkie, Tim, and Noodles! (And to think, Wilkie had the idea for the Snuggie ages ago!!)

Reading graphic novels with intention to share with my kids。DNF at 50%。 The full colour art in this was fine, but the storyline flopped。 It tried to tread this line between funny and serious that just didn't work for me。 I didn't even feel good enough to let my kids read it。 Back to the library it goes。 Reading graphic novels with intention to share with my kids。DNF at 50%。 The full colour art in this was fine, but the storyline flopped。 It tried to tread this line between funny and serious that just didn't work for me。 I didn't even feel good enough to let my kids read it。 Back to the library it goes。 。。。more

Cute story, appropriate for all ages except for the "Bloody Hell", "that sucks" and "that's lame" near the start which didn't seem necessary。 My 9 yr old said this was her favorite of the most recent stack of library books I checked out。 Cute story, appropriate for all ages except for the "Bloody Hell", "that sucks" and "that's lame" near the start which didn't seem necessary。 My 9 yr old said this was her favorite of the most recent stack of library books I checked out。 。。。more

The plot was awesome going with the time this story took place。 My favorite character was Tim because of his attitude and because I loved his personality from when he threw out the doctors equipment just to hitch a ride with him and to when he was turned into a mushroom。 It was a very fun and exciting book to read! Definitely recommend for those who like funny graphic novels!

Heidi

It really is super cute!

Erin

Very cute and often felt a little like an old Calvin and Hobbes in the best way。

Sandy

Really enjoyable。 Certainly my sense of humor。 (Clean)

Fun story idea and illustrations, but there were a few loose ends and plot holes。

So, I'm definitely not the audience for this book, as I think being a kid is necessary to appreciate the simplistic, broad humour and obvious plot。 The artwork is fun, and has lots of energy, though。 So, I'm definitely not the audience for this book, as I think being a kid is necessary to appreciate the simplistic, broad humour and obvious plot。 The artwork is fun, and has lots of energy, though。 。。。more

I read the Monster on the Hill without knowing anything in advance about it。 I won't ruin it for you by summarizing the plot。 If you love classic Popeye comic strips or Roger Langridge's Snarked, you'll probably love this like I did。 I read the Monster on the Hill without knowing anything in advance about it。 I won't ruin it for you by summarizing the plot。 If you love classic Popeye comic strips or Roger Langridge's Snarked, you'll probably love this like I did。 。。。more

In fantastical 1860 England, every town have their own monster to protect and to terrorize。 However in a town by the name Stoker-on-Avon, their monster is a total damp squib。 Not only was it not ferocious or scary it often falls into a depressive funk skunking in its lair up on the hill。 Dr。 Charles Wilkie was tasked by the town council to rehabilitate the monster and spice him up。 Accompanied by a town crier Timothy they embarked upon a journey of self discovery。

A humorous little tale about a glum monster called Rayburn。 Rayburn is the monster of Stoker-on-Avon。 he's supposed to terrorize the town once in a while and watch over it so that the Murk don't destroy it and eat all the people。 But Rayburn kind of sucks。 He's glum。 He lacks self-esteem and confidence。 He bemoans his lack of skills。 Townspeople put a disgraced doctor in charge of getting Rayburn back on the terrorizing business so they can have am monster they're proud of。 With the help of a st A humorous little tale about a glum monster called Rayburn。 Rayburn is the monster of Stoker-on-Avon。 he's supposed to terrorize the town once in a while and watch over it so that the Murk don't destroy it and eat all the people。 But Rayburn kind of sucks。 He's glum。 He lacks self-esteem and confidence。 He bemoans his lack of skills。 Townspeople put a disgraced doctor in charge of getting Rayburn back on the terrorizing business so they can have am monster they're proud of。 With the help of a street urchin, the doctor and Rayburn go on a journey to find the courage and skill Rayburn needs。 The humor is great, making fun of many fantasy tropes while employing them。 The art is colorful and full of delightful creatures normal and fantastical。 Recommended for those who like mushrooms, carnivores plants and souvenirs。 。。。more
