Summary

Year after year, readers pulled me aside at events and said, “I’ve never had a problem starting。 I’ve started a million things, but I never finish them。 Why can’t I finish?

According to studies, 92 percent of New Year’s resolutions fail。 You’ve practically got a better shot at getting into Juilliard to become a ballerina than you do at finishing your goals。

For years, I thought my problem was that I didn’t try hard enough。 So I started getting up earlier。 I drank enough energy drinks to kill a horse。 I hired a life coach and ate more superfoods。 Nothing worked, although I did develop a pretty nice eyelid tremor from all the caffeine。 It was like my eye was waving at you, very, very quickly。

Then, while leading a thirty-day online course to help people work on their goals, I learned something surprising: The most effective exercises were not those that pushed people to work harder。 The ones that got people to the finish line did just the opposite— they took the pressure off。

Why? Because the sneakiest obstacle to meeting your goals is not laziness, but perfectionism。 We’re our own worst critics, and if it looks like we’re not going to do something right, we prefer not to do it at all。 That’s why we’re most likely to quit on day two, “the day after perfect”—when our results almost always underperform our aspirations。

The strategies in this book are counterintuitive and might feel like cheating。 But they’re based on studies conducted by a university researcher with hundreds of participants。 You might not guess that having more fun, eliminating your secret rules, and choosing something to bomb intentionally works。 But the data says otherwise。 People who have fun are 43 percent more successful! Imagine if your diet, guitar playing, or small business was 43 percent more successful just by following a few simple principles。

If you’re tired of being a chronic starter and want to become a consistent finisher, you have two options: You can continue to beat yourself up and try harder, since this time that will work。 Or you can give yourself the gift of done。

I did it!! I finished reading this book, finally 4 years later。。。 In the midst of an office move, I lost the book and couldn't find it to finish reading it so I checked out a copy from the library。 It was a great book, and I truly enjoyed reading it!I was inspired to read this book because I knew I'd learn something about myself, and it would challenge me to finish (and start) some projects I'd been putting off。 Jon Acuff, has a sense of humor in his writing style that sounds like a true friend I did it!! In this book, "Finish: Give Yourself the Gift of Done", Jon Acuff provides strategies to set, execute and meet goals, professionally and personally, yes- even cleaning out the garage! 。。。more

Really liked it。 Want to go back through it now, again with a specific goal in mind and work through the questions but it makes you think about things just a bit differently。

I。 Can。 So。 Relate。 More fun to read than “Focus” - I love the tips and applications。 John’s humor makes ripping off the band-aid a little easier。 If you find yourself with perfectionist tendencies you need to read this book。

I liked Sountracks so I checked this out。 There are some good tips in here, but I listened to the audiobook and was not about to write them all down。 I will be either purchasing in paperback or on kindle at some point so that I can make those tips applicable to my own life。 A good book if you're looking for help on actionable ways to finish your goals。 I liked Sountracks so I checked this out。 There are some good tips in here, but I listened to the audiobook and was not about to write them all down。 I will be either purchasing in paperback or on kindle at some point so that I can make those tips applicable to my own life。 A good book if you're looking for help on actionable ways to finish your goals。 。。。more

This was a good but hard look at how perfectionism is one of the biggest limiters to not finishing。 Definitely resonated with noble obstacles and the three reasons he identifies at the end for why people are often afraid to finish。 Could see how some people might get nothing out of it based on what motivates them but it was helpful (even if I didn’t want to hear some of it)。

Finish is an encouraging self improvement book。What made you interested in reading this book? It popped up in a feed and was short so I figured it'd be an easy win。 I was in the middle of finishing a long projected and needed some encouragement to get it over the finish line。 What were your favorite parts of the book?I loved the concept of "what do you do the day after perfect?" I think that focusing on how to handle that than how to make perfect days happen is great。 I also liked how the author Finish is an encouraging self improvement book。What made you interested in reading this book? It wouldn't be the same book or as widely applicable but I'd like a version of this book focused on writing since that's what I struggle the most with finishing。 What questions do you still have after reading it? I would appreciate more distinction between habits and projects。 These got equated to each other but there's a difference between making a habit of exercising and finishing a large project。 One had no end date the other is a longterm habit。 The book treated the two as the same but I believe there's a distinction to be made that wasn't addressed。 What books/genres does this story remind you of? War of Art is a good writing specific book that is in a similar vein as this。 It also reminded me of Made to Stick by Chip and Dan Heath。 。。。more

Jon Acuff’s style of writing is so refreshing and enjoyable。 He communicates the realities of the human psyche in a fun, laugh-at-yourself sort of way。 Finish was great to read after reading Start, but by no means are they needed to be read together。 Practical and powerful。 Definitely will read it again

Good advice on not getting tripped up on perfect。 It is always better to cut the goal in half or add double time than to not achieve the goal。 Achieving goals creates momentum which allows one to continue to the finish。 Also, important to become singularly focused at times to work toward the finish。

Jon Acuff wrote a book called Start。 I read it and realized I was pretty good at starting already。 Jon noticed most people were good at starting but terrible at finishing。 The overwhelming stat he uses in Finish is that 92% of people do not complete their New Years' resolutions。 Most of us aren't any good at Finishing。 Jon takes the time to walk through the myriad of reasons we don't Finish。 Then he gives tangible resources to overcome those roadblocks on the journey to Finish。 I am taking what Jon Acuff wrote a book called Start。 I read it and realized I was pretty good at starting already。 Jon noticed most people were good at starting but terrible at finishing。 The overwhelming stat he uses in Finish is that 92% of people do not complete their New Years' resolutions。 Most of us aren't any good at Finishing。 Jon takes the time to walk through the myriad of reasons we don't Finish。 Then he gives tangible resources to overcome those roadblocks on the journey to Finish。 I am taking what I read and applying it to my goals。 They aren't overwhelming or mind-blowing, but they are helping me persevere from a habitual starter to a finisher。 。。。more
