Audio is a must! Fangirled all the way through and loved learning all the Scottish history。

3。5? ish? As much as I enjoy these guys, the book was a bit all over the place for me 。。 and the recurring Black Jack Randall jokes were just cringe。 (PS: I did read along with the audio - it helped with some of the jokes but not all。)

It just had WAYYY to much history for me。 It was really good all the other parts but the history was too much。

Maria

Simply brilliant。 Laugh out loud funny and peppered with a fair amount of decent Scots history 。 Loved it

Well, that was a rolicking ride!Sam and Graham drive, ride (tandam bike), tramp, boat and motorcycle(w sidecar) and eat and drink their way across Scotland。What a hoot! (except for Sam's propensity to supposedly dis Graham as "Lady MacTavish)They visit some amazing places and dish on the history behind them。 Lots of fun and educational too! Wish my history teachers had been so engaging。 Well, that was a rolicking ride!Sam and Graham drive, ride (tandam bike), tramp, boat and motorcycle(w sidecar) and eat and drink their way across Scotland。What a hoot! History + travel, what more could you want? Oh yeah, plus Jamie and Dougal from Outlander。 There's also a TV series that compliments the text from this book called Men in Kilts。 The banter between these two writers is funny, but there's so many Outlander spoilers for those who have not seen all the seasons yet! I do love the fact that they visit all these places in Scotland AND provide a comprehensive history of them。 Not many travel books do that。 Great, great, book, and one of my favorites for History + travel, what more could you want? Much more Scottish history than I needed。

Highly recommend the audio version! Listening to the Scottish brogues (and the brotherly like bickering) of these two men is much better than reading。 Fans of the Outlander series will certainly enjoy。 This book was part travelogue, part Scottish clan/highland history, part behind-the-scenes of Outlander and Men in Kilts TV shows and part buddy comedy。If there’s ever a sequel, I’ll definitely listen to that as well。

The audiobook is wonderful。 I started just reading the hard copy and was like, no, this will be much better heard。 I was right。 Hilarious and surprisingly informative。 And if they both want to read me a bed time story every night, I’m here。

I really looked forward to reading this book。 Although I have not seen Outlander or the Men in Kilts tv show, this seemed like it would be a humorous trip through Scotland。 The book is based on their adventures while filming the tv show that revisits some of the sites from the Outlander series。 There is quite a lot of Scottish history, which was interesting, but a tad too much of 'lad humor' which I grew tired of。 I imagine fans of the show would receive the book more positively because they wou I really looked forward to reading this book。 Although I have not seen Outlander or the Men in Kilts tv show, this seemed like it would be a humorous trip through Scotland。 The book is based on their adventures while filming the tv show that revisits some of the sites from the Outlander series。 There is quite a lot of Scottish history, which was interesting, but a tad too much of 'lad humor' which I grew tired of。 I imagine fans of the show would receive the book more positively because they would be familiar with the actors and the characters they play。 。。。more

Laugh out loud funny at timesI did enjoy their ribbing each other。 Interesting history was covered but the book wasn’t something I longed to pick up。

This was a good audiobook, especially if you liked the show outlander。 Had some good behind the scenes stuff and lots of Scottish history。

Listened the audiobook。 I now have passion to visit Scotland。

It was a tough decision between 4 and 5 stars! Is this book a bit self-indulgent at times? Absolutely。 But it also made me laugh out loud lots and I haven't experienced that in a book in a long time。 Not to mention learning more about bonnie Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿💙 It was a tough decision between 4 and 5 stars! I had a lot of hope for this book。 A lot。 And I was left very disappointed。 Also, I listened to the audiobook and read the book simultaneously, which I recommend if you do actually want to read this book。 Cons: The book is so poorly written。 The mix of personal stories, Scottish history, and their current adventure was hard to follow。 The interviews and stops on their journey could have been made even more interesting with more information about what the people they met along the way had to say。 I had a lot of hope for this book。 A lot。 And I was left very disappointed。 Also, I listened to the audiobook and read the book simultaneously, which I recommend if you do actually want to read this book。 Cons: The book is so poorly written。 The mix of personal stories, Scottish history, and their current adventure was hard to follow。 The interviews and stops on their journey could have been made even more interesting with more information about what the people they met along the way had to say。 Early on they talk about Graham’s sex life and that’s just poor taste for me。 To be fair, I don’t honestly enjoy hearing about my friends sex lives, let alone a stranger’s。 I’m probably in the minority there but I get that。 Sam makes a lot of comments about the women Graham has in his hotel at night and it’s just in poor taste。 Graham is a self proclaimed anti bullying advocate。 However he has no problem bullying a man for his weight, bullying Sam about everything, etc。 I take huge issues with being a self proclaimed anitbullying advocate but then having absolutely no issues publishing a book with your bullying comments for all to see。 Graham is absolutely a bully。 And then there were the tape jokes。 Speaking about how rape was a major occurrence in the 1700s is one thing。 But the constant use of rape as a joke was not ok。 Pros: I enjoyed hearing more about Sam (as I am clearly just not a fan of Graham anymore) and generally hearing more about their lives up to this point。 I enjoyed hearing the behind the scenes stories from Outlander。 I enjoyed the little bit of history that I did learn from this book。 Overall would I recommend it to someone? Probably not。 Do I feel like they used their fame from Outlander to get my money? Absolutely。 Was it a waste of a read? Maybe。I enjoyed about half of it, that is when I was saying they didn’t just say that? Or Oh another rape joke。 。。。more

I love the outlander series; this was a bore to read。

Sam & Graham narrating is the best part of this book i。e。 just listening to them talk。 However, for the most part it is really boring and for sure would have been a better TV show as Men In Kilts definitely is! Not sure why this also needed to be a book? I did learn some interesting facts about Scotland so that was pretty cool。 But overall I wouldn’t recommend unless you’re a huge history nerd and also love listening to Scottish men speak。

Fun romp in the Scottish Highlands。 Great for fans of Outlander, even though the jokes between Sam and Graham get a little stale by the end。

I'm a SamFan, a Heughligan, reallyClever and educational。 I would recommend pairing it with the series, Men In Kilts, Starz on Sundays。 Admittedly, this is not an unbiased review。 I'd give it 5 stars, but that'd be too obvious。 I'm a SamFan, a Heughligan, reallyClever and educational。 I would recommend pairing it with the series, Men In Kilts, Starz on Sundays。 Admittedly, this is not an unbiased review。 I'd give it 5 stars, but that'd be too obvious。 。。。more

This book caught my interest after deciding to backpack through the Highlands of Scotland in May 2022。 I have already read the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon and watched the TV series starring both Sam and Graham, which was helpful at times given that they reference the show off and on throughout the book。This book delivers on the description on the cover "Whisky, Warfare and a Scottish Adventure" but they left out one of the most common themes throughout the book: the constant heckling and This book caught my interest after deciding to backpack through the Highlands of Scotland in May 2022。 I have already read the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon and watched the TV series starring both Sam and Graham, which was helpful at times given that they reference the show off and on throughout the book。This book delivers on the description on the cover "Whisky, Warfare and a Scottish Adventure" but they left out one of the most common themes throughout the book: the constant heckling and banter between the two。 You get to know not only about the history of Scotland, especially on the 1600's and 1700's, but you also get a glimpse into the actors own histories (careers and childhoods alike)。 The book was an easy read and very informative with lots of humorous moments。 It was easy to pick up and put down as it was more a collection of stories than a novel。 I enjoyed learning more about one of the country's of my own origins and it inspired me to learn more。 。。。more

I tried to read this mini-memoir by actors Heughan and McTavish (of Outlander fame) but honestly the format did not hold my attention。 Others mention the audio book as coming “alive”, which sounds like the way to go, and then there is to be an upcoming television show。 Traveling Scotland with these two, sounds like a perfectly binge-worthy romp!

I had zero expectations when I got this book, save for maybe seeing a few fun pictures of Sam Heughan, but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised。 I learned a lot about Scottish history。 The book describes a road trip the two actors/authors took to film a pilot for their Outlanders spinoff show, Men in Kilts。 They stopped at many key Scottish historical sites such as Culloden and Glencoe and gave the background as they did。 I'm still no Scottish history expert, but at least I'm not as ignorant I had zero expectations when I got this book, save for maybe seeing a few fun pictures of Sam Heughan, but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised。 I learned a lot about Scottish history。 The book describes a road trip the two actors/authors took to film a pilot for their Outlanders spinoff show, Men in Kilts。 They stopped at many key Scottish historical sites such as Culloden and Glencoe and gave the background as they did。 I'm still no Scottish history expert, but at least I'm not as ignorant now! I have to agree with the other reviewers who were put off by the misogynistic tone that popped up here and there。 I can't believe that anyone who works with Caitriona Balfe could remain a misogynist, but the guys regularly calling one another women as insults dated them, to say the least。 And they didn't seem to mind being either drunk or hung over most of the week。 (That was probably exaggerated for the purpose of the book, but still。) I guess I'll never get invited to go along on one of their adventures, and that's probably best for all concerned, but all things considered, it was fun to go along as a reader! 。。。more

Between all the publicity for this book and the MIK show it seemed like I'd heard a lot of what was in the book, but not everything。 I laughed out loud many times - mostly at Graham's sharp remarks and musings and it was a fast read。 What I liked: there were a few nuggets about the behind the scenes of Outlander (I'm a show fan) and folks that work on Outlander - Wendy sounds like a fun person to hang with; places to visit/see in Scotland if I ever go back, as well as places to avoid b/c too tou Between all the publicity for this book and the MIK show it seemed like I'd heard a lot of what was in the book, but not everything。 I laughed out loud many times - mostly at Graham's sharp remarks and musings and it was a fast read。 What I liked: there were a few nuggets about the behind the scenes of Outlander (I'm a show fan) and folks that work on Outlander - Wendy sounds like a fun person to hang with; places to visit/see in Scotland if I ever go back, as well as places to avoid b/c too touristy。 A question and answer about the book from Jan 2021 made me weary that there were a lot of sexist or misogynist quips。 There were three or four times when I thought SH could've said 'lass' instead of 'wench'。 So not egregiously offensive about women just a trope or two that need to be unlearned or left to die。 Each joked about the other's vanity (fitness routine, stature, hair and clothing) and there were a few fatphobic comments about men, as well as some about oozing versus withering masculinity in comparison to themselves, which they readily admit several times。 。。。more
