Summary

My mum is up there somewhere。 She's waiting -- I can feel it。 I just have to find her in time, that's all 。。。 Because when I do, I'll know the truth about who stole her。 '

Told through the innocent voice of a child, this is a story that celebrates the power of hope and resilience, from the author of The Boy at the Back of the Class。

On her tenth birthday, Aniyah makes a wish -- a wish for her mum。 After school that same day, Aniyah and her brother are rushed out of school and driven far, far away。

So Aniyah sets out to find out the truth -- about the wish and about what happened to her mother。 And in doing so she ends up on an adventure she never could have foreseen。。。one that involves a very clever squirrel, a homeless man named Harry, the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, and the biggest star in Hollywood。。。

This is not a book I would personally pick up and read, but it is the book the class I assist in was reading for the term and I really enjoyed it。 A very good book I believe for younger readers, and touches upon some serious topics in a suitable way and does raise awareness。 I would recommend this book to those who are possibly interested。

The Star Outside my window was one of my favourite books。 It was a great book from start to finish。

It starts out really well but the odd, almost clueless but also trauma fueled, narration makes it hard to follow and build empathy for the characters。

A lovely light read which highlights domestic abuse, lovely ending too and a portion of proceeds goes to herstory a charity set up by the author。

O livro em si tem uma historia boa, mas o final e simples。Com aquela história toda pansava, que o final ia ser muito melhor

(This scene still brings tears to my eyes)。 She insists the star is her mother coming back to them, referencing a scene in “The Lion King” where Mufasa tells Simba that truly important people come back as Stars that watch over them。Aniyah sees that the “star-hunters” as she calls the astronomers, are holding a contest for naming the star, and she is moved to enter her mom’s name。 However, there are too many entries, and she starts getting worried about making the deadline。 With the help of her two foster siblings, they hatch a plan and head to London on Halloween to make it to the Greenwich observatory in time for the Star Naming Gala。 The book ends on a hopeful note, but the messages remain in the reader’s mind, and by the end, I was outright sobbing at the pain these innocent children had to go through。The theme in the book of domestic abuse shows the impact that the adult world has on children, and makes the reader reflect on such situations。It is so important to recognize that the author and her aunt are Muslims and that domestic abuse does unfortunately exist among our communities, even when Islam prohibits it。 Books like this facilitate conversations between children and adults about such situations and what to do in case you witness or experience abuse。 。。。more

I really love the author, her books are somewhat deep。 I do not want to spoil too much, but this is one of the best。 It has a surprisingly twist in the end, it’s heartfelt。 It teaches people to not give up。 The story is saying that you should risk to success

I have just finished reading this book as part of my guided reading sessions with a Year 6 class in the UK。 My school is situated in a low income area, and domestic abuse is something that multiple children in the community have been witness to。 The book has really connected with my class of 10 and 11 year olds, and some of them have seen themselves in Aniyah。 For other pupils, the exposure this book provides to the foster system is gentle yet remarkable。 They have mentioned a few times that the I have just finished reading this book as part of my guided reading sessions with a Year 6 class in the UK。 My school is situated in a low income area, and domestic abuse is something that multiple children in the community have been witness to。 The book has really connected with my class of 10 and 11 year olds, and some of them have seen themselves in Aniyah。 For other pupils, the exposure this book provides to the foster system is gentle yet remarkable。 They have mentioned a few times that they want to know more about it, which I think is a telltale sign of a good book。I would recommend this book for 10-13 year olds specifically, but I think that older readers would still be able to appreciate the story and the things that Aniyah and her friends go through。A star off for everyone, including the other children and the police, keeping the Dad's actions a secret。 This is not always helpful for children, especially children like Aniyah, who are smart and thoughtful。 。。。more

I thought this book had such a good story and was very emotional, although I began to become bored a bit when they were on the journey。

Amazing book to address domestic abuse with children。 Spoiler: Warning mother dies and kids process it through an amazing support of other foster kids。

Beautifully written, with difficult topic really well handled。 Full of hope though maybe a little too convenient a resolution to the story。

Jae

A difficult subject tackled with much grace and sensitivity。 Beautifully done。

3。5 stars。 The ending to this book was awesome and was my favorite part of the book to read。 I do wish that there were more consequences for Aniyah’s actions, but other than that the novel was great!

Beautiful and vital message。 Marked down for infeasible stupidity on the part of several adults in the story (no way could a bunch of kids this young and unstreetwise make it to London and get into a private event unnoticed), as well as the unfortunate transphobia behind the author's feminism。 The fight to believe and protect survivors of domestic abuse can really do without attempts to exclude trans women from desperately needed safe spaces。I'm not sure I'd recommend this book to my students (1 Beautiful and vital message。 Marked down for infeasible stupidity on the part of several adults in the story (no way could a bunch of kids this young and unstreetwise make it to London and get into a private event unnoticed), as well as the unfortunate transphobia behind the author's feminism。 The fight to believe and protect survivors of domestic abuse can really do without attempts to exclude trans women from desperately needed safe spaces。I'm not sure I'd recommend this book to my students (11-16), as I feel others tell similar stories without the problematic undertones。https://womansplaceuk。org/2019/10/01/。。。 。。。more

The Star Outside My Window by Onjali Q Rauf is about a girl named Aniyah who lost her mother。 She does not accept that her mother has died and she thinks her mother has turned into a star。 One day, there is a competition naming a star。 Aniyah strongly believes that the star is her mom, so she wants to name it after her mom。 I like how the book catches my attention and makes me want to keep reading。 It also creates a vivid picture of what is happening in each scene。 To be honest, I didn't dislike The Star Outside My Window by Onjali Q Rauf is about a girl named Aniyah who lost her mother。 She does not accept that her mother has died and she thinks her mother has turned into a star。 One day, there is a competition naming a star。 Aniyah strongly believes that the star is her mom, so she wants to name it after her mom。 I like how the book catches my attention and makes me want to keep reading。 It also creates a vivid picture of what is happening in each scene。 To be honest, I didn't dislike anything from this book so I rated it 5 stars。 。。。more

It's a phenomenal piece of work, but some things that happened in this book were too hard for me to digest, and that's totally on me 🙌🏽。 I was probably just not in the right mind space while reading it 🤷🏽‍♀️。But having said all that, I still got teary-eyed multiple times, especially at the very end and that should seriously convince you to pick it up and give it a go🥺 It's a phenomenal piece of work, but some things that happened in this book were too hard for me to digest, and that's totally on me 🙌🏽。 I was probably just not in the right mind space while reading it 🤷🏽‍♀️。But having said all that, I still got teary-eyed multiple times, especially at the very end and that should seriously convince you to pick it up and give it a go🥺 。。。more
